Do you really have to assign beliefs to people you don't even know and then point out inconsistencies between these viewpoints (that, again, you have assigned), in the middle of a discussion about an issue that has nothing to do with those other issues? What are you talking about and what is the point? You seem to be in a big hurry to label me as a liberal so that you can dismiss what I have to say out of hand, on any topic.

I agree. I just wanted to stress that you have to separate the zealots who kill innocent people from the general category "the Arab world." If you fail to do that, you only succeed in becoming a zealot yourself.

Who are "they" exactly? If you are talking in big general categories, then I think you are making a big mistake.

Counterpoint: the solution to the problem does not lie in isolationism, intolerance and xenophobia. If you generalize, you just perpetuate the problem. You have to focus your rage on the parties who are guilty of committing these crimes.

Obviously, it's a huge problem. I just think that the terms "war" and "them" have to be understood in new, more complicated ways. Up to now, for decades, we've sort of been dealing with the problem by throwing water on a grease fire. We have to concentrate our efforts against specific individuals and agencies and do what we can to not keep perpetuating this at-large cultural contention and hostility.

Just totally awful and senseless! I cannot imagine witnessing something like this or having to deal with losing a loved one in this way. So many innocent lives ruined. My heart goes out.

Well, Italy was not at their best in that game. But they definitely did that thing which a major tournament requires: they improved as they went along and they peaked at the right time. And the U.S., even though I think they finished dead last in the whole tournament, got the bragging rights to say they were the only team to take a point from the World Champs.

I remember it right. I remember De Rossi elbowing Brian McBride and making a bloody mess. USA got two red cards in the game. One in the first half and another in the first couple minutes of the second half. So, it was 10 vs 9 for pretty much all of the second half. USA was crap for all the rest of the tournament, but they were equal to or better than Italy on that particular day.

I remember that Italy / USA game in 2006. It was a 1-1 tie and the U.S. played almost the entire second half a man down (10 vs. 9!). It was a crazy, tense game. Actually, the U.S. was the better team that day in my opinion. Landon Donovan really impressed me--he busted his ass all over the field, especially once they were down to 9 players.

I thought Portugal played an excellent game. The feel of the game definitely changed when Ronaldo went out--it became a little bit of a grind-it-out effort, but they did it extremely well. For most of regulation, France was creating better chances. The goalie was clearly the man of the match. In extra time though, I could feel Portugal pulling away, like France was running out of steam. All in all, the better team won. And I thought it was great to watch. Lots of drama and lots of skill on display all over the field.

I watched it and liked it too. It managed to take a familiar premise and make it feel original and interesting. Plus, I could watch John Turturro eat cereal for 60 minutes. Such a good actor.

I agree with the call. Schweinsteiger stuck his hand up right where the opponent’s head was about to make contact with the ball. It was in the box and it was a potential chance for a good shot on goal if Schweinsteiger didn’t interrupt the play. I’m not 100% sure that he meant for his hand to contact the ball, but he had no business sticking his hand in there. The fact is that he did handle the ball and it affected the play and it was inside the box. Result: penalty. German’s own Michael Ballack, now a commentator, had the correct take. He wondered what the hell Schweinsteiger was thinking in that moment. He’s an experienced player. He should have known better than to stick his hand out. The ref had to make that call.
