I thought the first one was pretty good. Both teams created some chances. I thought it was exciting at the end when both teams really seemed to want 3 points instead of 1. I was into it the entire time. And it very nearly had a classic ending in the last couple minutes (that shot off the post). The France / Uruguay game was a bit of a dud. France looks to live up to their current rep: Great on paper, a stinking turd on grass. And Uruguay played the very unattractive style of stacking defenders and basically holding on for one ugly point. What Meazza said is true. The quality of games typically will build after the first round. And very often, the powerhouse teams will look sluggish in their first games. The popular strategy is to not come out of the gate too fast. I won't try to convince anybody that they ought to like anything they don't like. It so happens that I am a junky for this stuff. I can't get enough, even including the 0-0 draws. For me, it's all part of the big story. Even the game Uruguay played today... it's not anything flashy, but I can really appreciate the hard work they did keeping France from scoring, especially in the late minutes. That defender in the wall who jumped up to get his head on Henry's free kick... that was something special to me. However, I can see how some people do not enjoy a game like that.

Yeah, not too many thrills from Group A. I honestly couldn't say which two teams will make it out. The team with the least amount of talent showed, by far, the most spirit: South Africa. Oh man, I wish that late chance slipped in instead of off the post. Oh, please please please, team USA, give us a good showing tomorrow! I really think we have a chance. Our back line is going to have to really step it up. They did it a year ago against Spain in the Confederations Cup, also in S. Africa.

Ah yes. I think they will do very well. They are always fun to watch. They do not believe in playing cautious. They like scoring goals. Oh, well... time for me to bow out for a while. I don't want to see any spoiler type info...

I’m sure there are hundreds. My first impression of an album is often wrong. These are the ones I can think of right now... Led Zeppelin – Presence. Back in high school, I thought it was weak. Now it’s the only Zeppelin record that seems to have aged well. Talking Heads – Remain in Light. I don’t know why, but I used to not like it. Now I think it’s a masterpiece. Silver Jews – Bright Flight. I love the Silver Jews. When this album came out, I thought it was a huge disappointment. Now after a few years I think it’s great. Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin. I was pissed that their guitarist, Ronald Jones, left the band. When this album came out, it was a completely different sound for them. Instead of the guitar sound I was used to, it was all synth-ey and it sounded wimpy and stupid to me. I came to love it.
