  1. Of all of The Beatles offspring, I would consider Sean Ono Lennon as the most talented. I love what he does with Les Claypool in the Claypoool Lennon Delirium. Less well known is the GOASTT ("the goast of a saber-tooth tiger"), the band he fronts with his girlfriend, Charlotte Kemp Muhl. I do not know if they are still active, but their older stuff is certainly worth listening to.
  2. Although The Monkees were generated as TV act, Mike Nesmith had success as musician after the TV career was over. He died 4 years ago at age 78. RIP.
  3. On my list of favorites there are a few bands which I would classify as "pop". However, I always liked The Sparks. They produced some memorable songs, and their live performances were based on the contrast between the hyperactive vocalist Russell Mael and the very stoic keyboarder with the Hitler moustache, Russell's brother Ron (alhough he can be seen smiling on rare occasions). Here they are introduced by Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. They also could rock harder, as in "I bought the Mississippi River". The song even has two guitar solos. Unfortunately, it is a bit too short for my taste.
  4. Great!!! Aside from the music, my personal favorite is the old (1950s) Mercedes-Benz (probably a 180 or 180D) in the Snakedriver video.
  5. When "jazz-rock" became a style of its own toward the end of the 1960s, the US had Chicago (Transit Authority); Blood, Sweat and Tears; and a whole bunch of less well known acts (some of my personal favorites: The Flock, Paul Butterfield). In the UK, Colosseum probably was the best known. Personally, my favorite is the Keef Hartley Little Big Band. In this clip, Barbara Thompson's sax solo (~5:30) is the stuff dreams are made of.
  6. Lucid tentacles test and sleeved And joined, and jointed, jade pointed diamond back patterns Neon meate dream of a octafish Artifact on rose petals And flesh petals in pots Fact and feast, in tubes, tubs, bulbs In jest, *****, in jest, in just, in feast, ***** And specks, and speckled, speckled Speckled speculation
  7. If you see something that looks like a star And it's shooting up out of the ground And your head is spinning from a loud guitar And you just can't escape from the sound Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you We were children once, playing with toys And that thing that you're hearing is only the sound of The low spark of high-heeled boys
  8. I'm a-gonna dance with my princess By the light of the magical moon I'm a-gonna dance with my princess By the light of the ma-magical moon As I go along my way I say hey-hey As I go along my way I say hey-hey-ay-ay-ay-ay
  9. The song is great, but the video looks awful. Here is another "official" video of the song.
  10. There's no way you'll get by me With the slightest sleight of hand I'm joining the professionals I want to be a man look! I wave my wand watch the rabbit disappear Join the professionals and learn to fight Animal magic
  11. Another great Beatles song, "I am the walrus", here as a "heavy" cover by the Spooky Tooth. I actually prefer the cover over the original.
  12. One of my favorite Beatles songs, covered here very competently by one of the first all-female bands, Fanny. I have presented this video before in this thread. However, I just learned that Fanny is still performing the song, 50+ years later. Especially June Millington on guitar (75 years at the time of the concert) still has it. They would make an awesome opening act for the next Rolling Stones tour.
  13. Animals came from miles around So tired of walking, so close to the ground They needed a change, that's what they said Life is better walking on two legs! But they were in for a big surprise They didn't know the law! What is the law? No spill blood What is the law!? No spill blood! Who makes the rules? Someone else Who makes the rules!? Someone else!
  14. I am a sucker for songs in triple time. Here is the Claypool Lennon Delirium...
  15. The island of doubt Is like the taste of medicine Working by hindsight Got the message from the oxygen Making a list Find the cost of opportunity Doing it right Facts are useless in emergencies The feeling returns Whenever we close our eyes Lifting my head Looking around inside
  16. When my love Stands next to your love I can't compare love When it's not love It's not love It's not love Which is my face Which is a building Which is on fire On fire
  17. Lucid tentacles test and sleeved And joined, and jointed, jade pointed diamond back patterns Neon meate dream of a octafish Artifact on rose petals And flesh petals in pots
  18. Perhaps, for a change, something from outside the mainstream. Here are "Uni and the Urchins". The only band member with some possible name recognition is on bass, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Sean Lennon's girlfriend and memberb of GOASTT.
  19. As he fired up the drum machine He stole a glance at the empty seats He took a minute to retune his guitar As the hour grew late I wanna send this out to Richie Vey In his thrift-store corner of the world His soul is my cheap laugh As the hour grows late
