why would you take out Groot on 3rd and long? He's one of our few good pass rushers
There’s only 2 spots on the line for a DE pass rusher. I guess it depends on if you prefer Groot, Epenesa, or the corpse of Von Miller (assuming we were subbing this guy in on obvious passing downs).
I think Epenesa is better at purely rushing the passer. Groot is a better all-around DE.

I want to think we have a strong enough locker room, where we can absorb a headcase or two as long as they aren’t in leadership positions.
You have to think Claypool knows this is his last serious chance to stick in the league. Maybe he takes it more seriously with that knowledge.
-
I think this pick is a great fit. He can replace Groot on 3rd and long and just pin his ears back.
I’m not even sure why being short is a disadvantage for a pass rusher. I would think it would actually help the speed rush move and getting around the edge.

The Sabres don't lack talent. In fact Lindy Ruff is inheriting a mostly playoff caliber roster that needs a few tweaks. As for why the Sabres have underachieved for so long, it's mostly bad luck. Sure there were a couple of questionable hires. But mostly you look at the names going in and think they were strong. Dan Bylsma was a cup-winner. But he rubbed Golden Boy Jack the wrong way. Phil Housley had a great rep as a player and amateur coach, plus he was a former Sabre. People love that. Jason Botterill as GM, same thing. Former Sabre. Came from the Pens organization where he won a cup. Ralph Krueger was the talk of the league when he coached the Oilers. They all seemed like good ideas at the time.
At least Granato left the team in a better place. They were in shambles after Krueger. Donny got them to within a point of a playoff berth.
There's also this notion that Terry is/was cheap. That unfortunate "maintain lifestyle" memo left a bad impression. Most of that came down during COVID. The Sabres were losing money even before the lockdowns. But people forget the massive contacts the Sabres handed out to players like Ville Leino, Jeff Skinner and Christian Ehrhoff. Those deals somehow made the Sabres worse. Leino never even scored a goal for Buffalo in his final year.
I've watched the majority of Sabres games since ~2004. While it's true the Sabres don't lack talent, you don't get the longest playoff drought of all time (not longest active drought, the longest for any franchise ALL TIME) by having bad luck. I think it's fair to say he's an incompetent NHL owner. By the way, the next closest playoff drought all time is 10 years, while ours is sitting at 13 years. So we're padding an already significant lead. -
My expectations in a reset year, considering we still have a top-3 QB in the league.
Floor: Wild Card
Good outcome: Win the Division
Probably unrealistic: 1st round bye
Once we get in the playoffs, anything can happen.

How can the same owner run one of the best franchises in football while at the same time run one of the worst in hockey?
Got lucky hiring the right front office, and got lucky drafting Allen. I think a 3rd party firm actually did the hiring search for McDermott after Rex Ryan flopped. His hires outside of that between both franchises have mostly been duds.Imagine if the Sabres hired a top-10 rookie head coach/GM combo, and got a McDavid/McKinnon level talent at the same position they just drafted Benson. Things would be different…

Just signed up for Athletic account. Read the article and the sneaky last paragraph of that story.
“Terry, who also serves as CEO and president of the Bills and Sabres, has neither granted an interview nor taken questions at a news conference since naming Kevyn Adams the Sabres’ general manager in June 2020. Terry hasn’t answered Bills-related questions since the March 2019 owners’ meetings.”
Complete supposition and alarmist reporting.
I guess that’s why he doesn’t want to share ideas with us. No first-hand info.
I am the victim of clickbait.
Didn’t Terry literally just speak at the press conference introducing Lindy Ruff? Idk if he took questions from the press (and honestly, why would he?).- 3

I kind of agree, but the NFL defenses adapted to bombs away. Mahomes’ last huge season was the last year NFL defenses let that happen.
Now they take away everything deep, and dare you to dink and dunk them. It’s a pretty sound strategy vs a great QB.
-
Hope he can be extended for a reasonable contract. Not a game breaker (and I wouldn’t give him a game breaker contract), but is stout and when there is another DE causing pressure on the other side, cleans up sacks pretty well.

I disagree strongly. They are obviously doing a bit of a rebuild year, with the plan to have a push next year when the cap clears up a bit.
McDermott might have been in a little bit of trouble towards mid-season last year, but he rallied the troops and performed pretty darn well to end the season.

Shakir leads in yards, Kincaid leads in targets

At this point none of the guys available are going to be difference makers. This guy, Robinson, OBJ, Chark, who cares. None of them would have a big impact.
Beane decided when he chose not to take a second WR that we are rolling with Coleman, Shakir, Samuel and Hollins.
Hamler is a small wildcard, there is some potential there if he can stay healthy.
Of course they could make a trade, but if you believe Beane, there is zero chance of that happening.
A post-June 1 trade for a vet WR is still on the table. -

So this has to tell us that the Bills viewed Cephus as a better low cost investment than a Day 3 WR?
Beane clearly had this in the works yesterday and mentioned it in his press conference.
I just don’t get it.
After Coleman, Samuel & Shakir, we have JAG’s battling it out for 4-6.
Literally every team has JAGs battling it out for 4-6.- 2

I think they still end up getting him if they stayed put. Unless a team was trying to trade ahead of them.

It’s a 4th round pick people, get a grip. Most 4th round picks don’t even play.

Physically he looks a lot like Michael Thomas. Who needs straight line speed, when you can get 1700 yards doing slants all day!
-
I think people were hoping for a Diggs replacement, but the front office got a Gabe Davis replacement. I’m fairly confident Coleman can be that (and probably even better than Davis).
Diggs will be replaced by Shakir and Samuel as a tandem if we don’t make a trade for a vet WR. I think that is fine.

I keep hearing that Coleman has much better hands that Gabe Davis but his catch rate was 57.5% last year which was definitely on the lower end of draft prospects. Part of the lower catch rate has to do with such a high portion of his catches ending up being contested since there is no separation. When he makes the jump ball or contested catch it ends up on his highlights and many are sensational plays. However, when you watch all of his targets you see a lot of drops and battles he did not win and come down with the ball.
Catch rate has a lot to do with what kinds of throws the offense chooses to make, and QB as well. If the QB is inaccurate, catch rate is going to be low because there will be a lot of impossible to make catches on targets your way. That number doesn’t mean a whole lot without context. His drop rate was very low.

If he ends up being Gabe Davis, but with a 4% drop rate and less bone headed option route decisions, that guy is definitely worth a 2nd rounder.

Has to be more than that. It’s quite manageable.
If he has diabetes and doesn’t take it seriously, that would be disqualifying IMO.

I think people are vastly overrating how productive a rookie WR will be (especially one in the 2nd round). For every Puka Nacua, there are 30 rookies that perform just okay (even good ones).
If we traded for Deebo, I would expect he would out produce every rookie WR in this class (even the MHJ) for this upcoming season. Now, whether we can fit him capwise...I'm not so sure.- 1

Wanna bet he doesn’t play corner in the NFL?
If he gets drafted by the Bills he might not because we need a safety. But if he gets drafted by a team that needs a corner I can’t see why not. (I don’t bet) -

I know it's easy to sit out here and criticize and second guess, and I love me some Brandon Beane, but...
The board calling for:
Linderbaum or Dax Hill over Elam
Humphrey over Basham
DK Metcalf over Cody Ford
We've been more correct in this range than the Bills FO.
Beane better have a few more magic tricks up his sleeve tonight.
I think the board was calling for Rosen over Allen. Gotta include the hits and misses to be fair.- 5

I think it’s largely accepted that he dropped due to height/weight and quality of competition. Otherwise he is athletic and had the best production of any DE last year. His weight is the same as Von Miller, but he is pretty short.
