  1. I'm assuming this is just McDermott fanboying over a high profile wrestler, a sport he is enthusiastic about? I guess the equivalent would be bringing in some big time former soccer player to kick if he loved that sport instead. I give this a 0.005% chance of working out.

He is going to have a huge season.  I really don't see anyway barring injury they are not a top 3 offense from a production standpoint.  He might throw for like 5000 plus yards and lead the league.

The system he plays in basically guarantees he will be extremely productive and limit turnovers.  Only the really terrible qb's turn the ball over in that system.

We’ll see. I remember defenses adjusting to Allen (e.g. preventing him from rolling out right). Texans also play a division winner schedule this year instead of a cupcake last place in the NFL schedule.

In the playoffs he looked good against the Browns, but the blowout victory was because Flacco threw TWO pick-6 interceptions. And the Ravens completely shut Stroud down. He only passed for a single first down the second half of that game while the Ravens pulled away.

I expect teams to take away the deep stuff from Stroud this year, and force him to dink and dunk them (similar to how defenses play Allen and Mahomes).

  3. Top 5 in the AFC? It's an interesting thought experiment. If I could swap WR, TE, and RB with the following teams then I would (considering only talent, not cap hits).

    1. Miami

    2. Cincinnati

    3. Browns (especially if Chubb is still good after injury)
    4. Texans

Teams where I think it's basically equal:
    1. Baltimore

    2. Colts
    3. Chiefs
    4. Jets (they could be in the next group up, it's close)

So I guess if someone put us at the very top of that second group we would be top 5. Not sure I agree though.

If it were a "re-tool" year then Douglas, Jones and Von Miller wouldn't still be here.    And Milano probably gets cut too.

Those guys are all one-and-done most likely so keeping them around would be pointless if they weren't trying to win a SB.

The "re-tool" year concept is just a coping mechanism created by a few homer's to help them deal with losing their beloved Tre White, Poyer, Hyde and Mitch Morse.

The reality is those guys were just washed or equally viable, younger and cheaper alternatives to what they had left were readily available or within reach.

The Bills aren't sacrificing this year anymore than the Chiefs were sacrificing 2022.

It may inadvertently turn into a failure of a season but it's not by design.

It makes zero sense to cut Von Miller, retool year or not with the dead cap it would incur. He also took a voluntary pay cut. As for Jones and Douglas, they are on pretty reasonable short term contracts (1 year for Douglas, 2 years for Jones) so I don't really think that is relevant to your argument. They do need to have some actual players on the roster to field a team.

The point is, this year isn't the year to pretend the cap isn't real like the Saints and Rams and just blow through it like a credit card by pulling every cap lever at Beane's disposal (restructures, void year, etc). I'm pretty sure Beane literally said something like that (we need to build for now and the future).

FWIW, I'm glad those older guys are gone as I agree they were washed (except maybe Morse). But as a result, this season we will have young players in starter roles. It will be a growth/development year. The Chiefs won the SB during their retool/cap reset year, and there is no reason we can't also as long as we have Allen.

Except for the Giants @ Cowboys those look pretty good. Bears are expected to be good. Dolphins have a good Offense and so do the Packers.... that game could be a shootout

How are the Bears expected to be good? They were the worst team in their division last year, and this year they have a rookie QB. For every Texans with Stroud outcome, there are 9 Panthers with Bryce Young outcomes.

  6. I don’t really understand the people hoping to light future cap on fire to make the team marginally better this season.

The defense opening day is going to look 50% different than opening day last season, and a lot of the holes are being filled with youth. It’s a retool year, and not a year to push all of our chips in.

Do you really want to be the Saints? Letting good vets go every offseason because they have to do cap gymnastics?

  7. It wasn’t just one game, he struggled a big chunk of the year to the point where he lost the trust of the coaching staff.

That is why I’m puzzled with the third down call there at the end of the KC playoff game. It was third and long. Should have been a quick underneath throw, a run, or an Allen keeper to pick up a chunk of it and go for it on 4th down. Poor tactics from the OC in the clutch there.

There's something to be said about an offense that runs the ball well enough to force a safety into the box, opening up much more of the passing game. I think Brady understood that last year, and it worked reasonably well. We'll see if that's the plan this year.

Another aspect is play action. Allen is an elite play action QB, and it’s even more effective when handing off is a legit option.

He's the same height as Dwight Freeney, who said his height was an advantage.

I think it’s largely accepted that he dropped due to height/weight and quality of competition. Otherwise he is athletic and had the best production of any DE last year. His weight is the same as Von Miller, but he is pretty short.

why would you take out Groot on 3rd and long? He's one of our few good pass rushers

There’s only 2 spots on the line for a DE pass rusher. I guess it depends on if you prefer Groot, Epenesa, or the corpse of Von Miller (assuming we were subbing this guy in on obvious passing downs).

I think Epenesa is better at purely rushing the passer. Groot is a better all-around DE.

  11. I want to think we have a strong enough locker room, where we can absorb a headcase or two as long as they aren’t in leadership positions.

You have to think Claypool knows this is his last serious chance to stick in the league. Maybe he takes it more seriously with that knowledge.

  12. I think this pick is a great fit. He can replace Groot on 3rd and long and just pin his ears back.

I’m not even sure why being short is a disadvantage for a pass rusher. I would think it would actually help the speed rush move and getting around the edge.
