The Bills won't play three LB's to stop a 12 yard run if it means some remote chance they give up a 30 yard pass play.  Not who they are.  With a 4 man defensive front and not being a blitzing team, no way they play an extra LB just to rush the passer.  The rare occasion is simply an opportunistic changeup, not their bread and butter.

Yes, I miss seeing an NFL that involved more running and LB play - even the 3-4 the Bills had that necessitated a rush backer.  However, anything short of facing Henry at RB and the Bills will be Nickle start to finish.

When i opened this thread was not to say that we have to change the way we are playing D, i’m not crazy.. i opened this thread to ask your opinion about using a 4-3 formation here and there using three LBs to rush the passer more and to be more consistent at stopping the run against teams with great backs like Henry, Kamara, Taylor, etc.
And those teams don’t have great QBs that can make you pay the price to play that formation few snaps during the game. I do also agree that the nickel is the right asset.

  2. Everything i had in my mind about this 4-3 stuff, start from the fact that i wish we could play more propositive football on D instead that conservative.
I mean… i want our approach to be very aggressive, give less time to other QBs to throw, get more sacks… but of course not every single play, but sometimes yes.
Mix the formation could only improve our D and worry other DCs how to answer changing their comfort zone.

We have top cornerbacks and safeties that can cover the field pretty damn well man to man, so i won’t be so concerned to try the 4-3 few times.
And like you guys said, against strong backs, with who we have hard times, one more LB could help a lot.

Gameplan specific.  Against colts or a henry lead titans I'd like to see more 4-3...against most teams more nickel.

Good news is that our LBS cover pretty well...so against running teams we don't lose too much in passing.

The gameplan is obviously very important to decide when to use this formation and when don’t do it. I agree with you that against strong run offense teams using three LBs could help our interior OL pretty well.

You want to change the no. 1 rated defense?

I didn’t say that. I was just thinking if sometime we could use that 4-3 formation to be more aggressive against the QB, we never used our three LBs together and having three very good ones, it could be something to use here and there, not constantly.

If the 3 rd LB is a safety…sure.

No no… i would like to see what would happen with all our three LBs together on the field at the same time. Of course we would have to think about dropping one and be very focused on the deep side of the field.

its certainly a question worth considering after seeing how Klein played on Sunday.  However, in my simple mind, I boil that question down to who do you want on the field, AJ Klein or defensive backs?

In todays pass heavy NFL, and with with how well TJ can read the play, tackle and cover etc. , I'd opt for the nickel with TJ on the field over Klein the majority of the time.

Interesting point of you… honestly i didn’t consider TJ in my theory. This because i wish to be very aggressive on the line attacking the QB more often.. maybe also using a safety blitz sometimes.

  6. I lately have this in my mind … using all our three LBs together to give more pressure on other QB and because our three LBs are quick enough to pass over opposite tackles.
Maybe dropping Milano in the middle letting Edmunds and Klein go for the QB.

Another reason because we could use a 4-3 formation is because we do have four strong defensive backs and anyway we could switch from the 4-3 to a nichel or dime formation if needed.

    What you think ?

Pressure on other QBs you say?

Note that the Bills are also highest in QB hurry rate by a significant margin, and the lowest in blitz % by a significant margin.

The chart is very clear but not always the numbers speak for what happen on the field and this about every pro sports.
Many times, for example, during the games i’m there loosing my self control because we can’t get to other QBs. 😅

And what is more likely to happen?

It was just an example on what can happen every year in this league. Of course i don’t know what is more likely to happen hut if i have to chose, i’m for improving the OL because we have a top 3 QB.

Sacks are great and strip sacks are better but if your hurrying the QB your secondary gets lots of opportunities to make plays on the ball.

    The Bills do that well.

Have you noticed almost all the glamour boy sack artists are all banged up right now.

I got your point… in fact one thing i was thinking is that we could play a 4-3 D with three LB all together, dropping one in Milano e free Edmunds and Klein to rush the passer, not on every play, but here and there during the game.

So the Steelers scored 16 (7 on a blocked punt cost us that one)

The Titans game we traded scores and they might be the second best D

And the once high powered Chiefs got embarrassed at home

Listen: i agree with you that we have a stout D but not sure about the best one.
The games we lost were against elite teams, with PIT at the first game of the season where almost everybody were here predicting an easy one… then TEN where was a great game over all and yes we lost on the last play, but we lost and TEN scored 34, while the win in KC was a statement by our side but be honest, it was’t the 2020 KC’s version.

Anyway i repeat myself: our D is very very good, top 5, but to me, to be the best one, would have to have more sacks, hits or pressure on other QBs, an area we lack of a little bit.

He looks like an average game manager and thats all Belly wanted or needed.

He couldn't execute his game plan with off script Cam.

Lets see how he manages against the best D in the NFL.

Great D in the NFL ? Sure. The best one ? I dunno. Remember the opponents we faced till now and that we lost against PIT, KC and TEN, the only very good teams (i don’t wanna think about the Jags game where we played overall awfully and Cord was in the game).

PIT has BB’s son as HC, KC was/is a mess and TEN with one only very great player by its side (Henry, because Tannehill sucks)

So be quite screaming we are the best D in the entire NFL. We are pretty damn good, but best don’t know, even if the math right now say this.

A.J. Klein signed a 3 year, $18,000,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $1,200,000 signing bonus, $11,300,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,000,000.

    i’ll keep him without hesitation.

what does this matter if the only stat that matters is the "W" see the jags again? Plus Jones is not the pats focal point in this years offense. And the other side of that coin to your post is. The pat's coach has made a career and won championships stopping high powered offenses, so...

No excuses for what? Bills still seem to be the better team and still should win the division, but having the pats nipping at your heels in only year 2 of their rebuild is not a good look for the divison. Next year could be a whole lot different.

Oh well, next year we could build a top 5 OL and add a very strong back becoming a nightmare for the entire League.

  13. Right now i see this:

    - Bills with some issues, like OL and backs strenght

    - Pats improving week in week out

Not saying that they are better than us, but that maybe they have less problems than us. And the problems we are having are not totally fixable.

With the OL we can try some adjustment: use two backs, Motor and Breida to get yards and Moss blocking; one back and with Knox blocking.

This to give Allen more time along with more play action and jet sweep to speed up Allen’s throws avoiding pressure and sacks.

With the defense i would think about using a 4-3 formation to pressure Mac more often, maybe dropping one of them ( Milano) to cover the middle while Edmunds and Klein rush him. Doing this we can avoid to use a safety to blitz saving the deep field protection.

Obviously i’m not a football coach, i’m just thinking about few solution that we could use against the Pats when we’ll face them. BB showed everybody to be a great coach and Judon is a top DC without question.

We probably are the more talented team, but in order to win both of that games, we have to play our A game taking care of the football (no picks or fumble at all) along with not having more than 50 penalty yards.

Haven't you heard from our "experts" here at TBD? Klein is sooooo much better. Edmunds won't see the field unless Klein goes down.

I couldn’t agree more about Klein. The guy is far more aggressive than Edmunds and more skilled IMO. Can’t understand why his playing time is so limited.

  15. 2 minutes ago, Virgil said:

Correct. I don’t think about them.  Max Jones hasn’t played us and we straight up owned them last year.  We have the better team and they are playing an equally easy schedule.  Mac Jones can’t run and our defense is better.

So yes, I don’t think about them

    Gotcha. Thanks for your thought.

You don’t what Virgil ? You don’t think about the them ? I always liked to read your points, so i’d like to see your here, if you don’t mind.
    Anyway i’m still sure that:

    - we have to make our OL stronger giving Josh more protection and then time

    - play more PA, stop run the middle but outside the tackles and more quick throws with slants and jet sweeps

    - more blitz on D and use more the 4-3 with Klein along Milano and Edmunds

    - use the no huddle offense sometimes…

I'm impressed, concerned even, but not worried.  They have Tennessee in week 12 and us in week 13.  I think playing us at home on a Monday night will be a level of enemy crowd noise that Mac hasn't dealt with this year.

Good point. Maybe it’s just smoke in the eyes moment. I hope so.

  18. After reading your opinions till here, i unfortunately see that my fears were legit.

What i fear more is another BB-Brady nightmare to start. That Mac Jones could really become another great QB playing under BB… like happened with TB. Not saying that Jones will become a TB level QB, how many have been at that level in the last 15 years.. but he’s showing a very good football avoiding to commit silly mistakes.

And like many of you said, they have a very good D and two strong TDs corps and backs.

  19. Ok… we are still in front but the Cheaters keep on winning week by week.. four in a row now. We have the first offense and the first defense, New England is third in both categories.
It seem that they are building their confidence game after game… i just want to know if you are worried about them, if you consider them a real threat to win the AFCE and maybe the AFC also.

Let’s get the skunk stink of the Jags off us today!

I watch this franchise since the late ‘80ies… want to see our guys with the same fire in their eyes and like you said, keep in mind what happened last sunday. No mercy for nobody anymore, if we have the chance to score 70, then score 70. Don’t stop the wave.

  21. Hi guys.

Here we go, it’s game time !!! To me the very first aspect to take on the game is the right mindset: in our case, to be very very very tough minded ! The rest will come by its self.
I know many things have to be execute the right way, but the approach of the game is where everything start today.

    GO BUFFALO BIIILLLLSSSSSS !!!

I waited a little longer to make this post. Sorry for the delay for anyone who was waiting for it (there may only be two of you, if that 🤣). The reason I waited is because I wanted to see If Dawson Knox was going to have a full practice (which he did).

If he plays, I believe he will have the biggest impact. I'm not saying it's the only reason (I know the o-line isn't good right now) but we've struggled ever since he was out. While we all loved his breakout season, the injury showed us how valuable he's truly been this year. Also, if the Jets try to play us like other teams have, this may leave some space in the middle of the field for Knox.

I've got Knox. Who ya got?

What about Daboll ? Creating the right offensive plan, with the offensive talent we have, we could scorse 30+ every week. Fixing the OL problem of course.
