The venue I'm seeing them at is 30 minutes outside of Portland.

Based on the location and the lineup, I'm picturing a sea of hipsters for sure.

(side note: Once, while working at a hotel front desk, I waited on Fred Armisen in drag. Like the picture below. They were a filming a Portlandia sketch in our lobby. He walked up to me, and the first thing he said, totally deadpan was "Hi. I don't really look like this. I'm in a costume". It took all the effort I could muster not to laugh at the whole situation.)

How was the show?  Just heard Courtney Barnett on the radio and it reminded me you were going.  I'm such a big fan of hers

Billy Strings was ***** awesome. So, so good live. That was my first time seeing them, but it won't be my last. Acoustic, upbeat, shake-yer-ass bluegrass in the first set. Then, after the sun went down, they came out and played more electric, spaced out, improvisatory stuff in the second set. So one could say they followed the tried and true Grateful Dead method. It worked!

Going to see a bunch of music I'm not familiar with tomorrow. Courtney Barnett, WaXahatchee, Sleater Kinney, and Fred Armisen. I know Armisen, of course, though I have no idea what kind of set he'll do (comedy? music?). A friend had an extra ticket and offered to take me. I'm not one to turn down a free outdoor summer concert. I like discovering new music. On first listen, WaXahatchee is pretty awesome. Barnett not bad either. Sleater Kinney is kind of not for me, but I'll put up with one unfavorable act if it means a bunch of other good music.

Trey Anastasio Band, Ben Harper, and two nights of Bob Weir and Wolf Bros still to come.

You're going to LOVE Courtney Barnett.  She's put out some incredible music in a short time. Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchie is also awesome.  Sleater Kinney and Fred armisen lends itself to a potential portlandia vibe😂.  I'm about to buy Trey/Goose tickets myself

That article I just linked claims that no, that was not the case.

It states that Kim Wexler was originally only supposed to be a bit part with a limited role in the show. It also stats that Jimmy was supposed to have transformed into Saul by the end of season one.

It says the same thing about Breaking Bad: That Jesse was only supposed to have a small part, etc.

I'm not sure where the author of this article gets this information, but assuming it's correct, it seems everything was NOT meticulously planned out in advance.

Yeah I wrote that as I was reading.  It's amazing how polished it was in almost every way

Thought y'all would enjoy the above overview/review of what a great show Better Call Saul was.

I won't bother quoting it. If you want to read a great summary of what made the show excellent, check it out. Not too long a read.

I'm curious to know if the entire series was written out in advance. Everything was just perfectly detailed and little to no fluff or throw away moments.  Almost as if the finale was written first and they backfilled to the beginning

Irony was a main running thread throughout the series. Jimmy starts by manipulating the elderly, and in the end,, an elderly Carol Burnett exposes him. One of a million examples of playing the long game as a writing team.

That was my only "complaint".  How did her character make that leap to Saul simply from her son being arrested.  I might have missed the connection.  But it's a very minor 'complaint'

  6. couple weeks ago, i took several edibles on a friday night.  I woke up still pretty damned high.  I laid there in bed and could not for the life of me figure out, in my head,  how my body was positioned on the bed😁

I once got so high in college that I thought my legs were floating away.  I was sitting on my bed watching a movie and kept putting blankets and pillows on top of my legs.

  7. I saw the "delerium" tour, not with Geddy, but it was really good.  Wasn't expecting much from Lennon, but i was pleasantly surprised

I want to say this was 2 or 3 years ago? Right before the Covid shutdowns. Claypool toured with Julian Lennon. For an encore they did Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles. In Toronto, Geddy walks on stage playing Les' pachyderm bass. Geddy starts going off to the point where Les just walks off the stage and Geddy is jamming with the rest of the band.

I agree.  It would be awesome to see that record broken outside of the steroid era.  If it could be done by a Yankee, even better.

To this day, "61" still stands as the record in my eyes.

I have my thoughts on the steroid era and while I love the baseball purist POV, the main people to blame for the hype of the juice era are the fans.  We loved the long ball and clamored for it and knew exactly what was going on.  It was only afterwards that we started villifying the players. Sure bonds may have been a crusty prick, but Sosa and McGwire were pretty much fan favorites before it all.  Oh well, I suppose that's pretty much what being a fan is.

I get why people wouldn't enjoy listening to Weir. As to the comment that he sounds like an 80 year old, well...he IS turning 75 in a couple months.

Personally, I'm amazed that Bobby and Phil -- one in his 70s and one in his 80s -- continue to get up and play multi-hour sets of Dead music at their age. We tend to view rock starts as invincible and eternal, but imagine going down to the local nursing home and picking out a 75 and an 82 year old and handing them instruments and asking them to entertain 20,000 music fans for three hours.

Me, personally? I will go and see Weir and Lesh (and Kreutzman and Hart) any time I possibly can. They're not going to be doing this forever, and the chance to experience live music -- however diminished -- being played by guys who have meant so much to my life -- 57 years after they started playing it! -- is an awesome treat for which I am very grateful. That said, in terms of quality of music, I'd argue that Dark Star Orchestra and JRAD are superior to Dead and Company. But I don't really go to Dead and Company shows because I expect to be blown away musically. I go because it's still some of my favorite musicians "searching for the sound" and sometimes finding peak moments, it's still a tribal celebration, it's still church. YMMV.

I saw that Bobby just announced a tour of Wolf Brothers shows, and I plan to attend a couple of those. I really like the "Wolf Pack" horn section and what it adds to the music. I think I've grown to enjoy the Wolf Bros more than Dead and Company, and I suspect Bobby has, too.

Got tix to jrad in Philly in November.  Can't wait.  Oh and.....what he said!!!

They are tremendous because of Kadlecik.

Personally, I find Dead and Co. to be unlistenable. Listening to Weir sing is a sad experience. I heard him do New Minglewood Blues and had to shut it off. He sounds like an 80 year old, constipated white rapper. Just pitiful.

I'm a big fan of Dead and Company, but I completely get it.  I personally thought this tour was fire, I went to 4 shows.  I also agree with your point about John K.  He should be in the Mayer spot, but if Mayer wants to do it, he's going to get the nod every time, and I'm loving him up there.  I got to see John K do a Sunday afternoon acoustic set a few weeks ago and there probably weren't 30 people, he was so damned good
