Weird pick for Seattle. They just drafted Kenneth Walker high in the 2nd last year.

They have been derailed by starting RB injuries a lot in recent history.   I think this is a two headed monster approach.

  2. What I can see just from the highlights.  He plays a LOT of slot lineups and he goes deep.

    -  Go from the slot

    -  Deep Post from the slot

    -  Mid Curl from the slot

    -  Red Zone:  Out (tight)

    -  Deep Flag from the slot

.......I stopped analyzing...... but I think we get the point.  Dude's a BIG slot WR that can also play tight if needed.  I don't see a lot of motion in Utah, but that would be an interesting wrinkle.lllll.  Watch out

While I am joining those giving Dorsey some side-eye about being able to maximize explosive players part of me wondered "Well, what would I do with him?"

So I figured, why not make a place where people would put in some X's and O's about how they would try use Kincaid

Quick idea for me would using him as a slotback, effectively lining up in the slot but behind to the line.

Curious what other people come up with.

    Good thread.

Start by looking at the route tree that worked for him in college.  I'd also interview him about certain plays that really feel natural for him.  Look at our current offensive personnel, and see if our roster could handle an NFL version of those college plays.

    Then?

    DO IT!

What's the list? If you don't mind sharing of course.

Most of not all will be gone when we pick unfortunately so we either get lucky, move up, or reach from outside of this list.

I did not include any pass rushers, QBs, RBs, WRs (we have Kincaid....).  Focussing on OL, LB, DT, Safety depth, PLUS any round 1 slips.

    No particular order:

    1. S Brian Branch

    2. CB Joey Porter

    3. OG O'Cyrus Torrence

    4. RT Dawand Jones

    5. OC John Michael Schmitz

    6. CB Cam Smith

    7. OG Steve Avila

    8. LB Drew Sanders (not an every down linebacker IMO, but great pass rusher)

    9.  OC Luke Wypler

    10. DT Keeanu Benton

    11. LB Daiyan Henley (better as a SAM linebacker)

    12. MLB Trenton Simpson

    13. S Sydney Brown

    14. DT Kobie Turner

Some of these are a bit of a reach for round 2 I realize

  5. I've removed the players already drafted...

The toughest part of projecting the Bills first round is knowing which 25 players will be picked before the Bills are on the clock.  Barring a trade, the Bills will select from among these players, in this order, depending on who remains on the  board:

    1. Dalton Kindcaid TE (despite no top 30 visit.  No visit was needed. If Kincaid is on the board, very likely he is easily the BPA.  Bill top 30 visits or private workouts with three other TE's.  This is a position of interest to the Bills.
    2. Michael Mayer  TE.  If Kincaid is off the board and Mayers is left he will be the pick for the same reasons.
    3. Darnell Wright OT.  If Kincaid and Mayer are off the board, and Wright is on the board, he is likely the top rated player left whom the Bills have targeted with a top 30 visit.
    4. Zay Flowers WR.  If the top 3 players are gone, and Flowers is left, he is almost certainly the best offensive weapon left on board. Separation is 95% of what matters for NFL WRs and Flowers is arguably the best separator in the pass (Bills had top 30 visit with Flowers)
    5. Darnell Washtington TE.  Bills had a top 30 interview with Washington. Likely in hopes of landing him in the second.  But the Bills will be emotionally committed to drafting offense with pick 1.  TE is a position of interest to the Bills, and Washington would be taken ahead of remaining lineman (assuming nothing weird like Broderick Jones being on the board still).  Washington is one of one in this draft in terms of physical potential at the TE position. (Note Wright and Flowers will be targeted ahead of Washington, because they are far more likely to have 2023 impact. Long term Washington may improve more important.

My guess is DT. A lasting memory of the Cinci home playoff beatdown is Ed Oliver being pushed 5 yards backwards in the snow by the Cinci Oline. I the weather and injuries were factors but I think they add a big strong defensive tackle that can be rotated in in the event that situation comes up again. Gervon Dexter is the guy if he is still on the board.

I don' think Bergeron makes it to 59. They have the hole at LB so if Sanders or Henley are there maybe they go that route.

I like Henley but think he's more suited for a SAM linebacker role, not so much MLB.

    I'd much prefer Trenton Simpson.

I expect to update this later before the second round of the draft starts. But with where we stand right now, I feel very in the dark about where the Bills go next. I will commit before the second round starts though.   A side note - this is the first draft in a while that Joe Shoen did not at least help Beane prepare for.  Some of the past "drafting traits" may have moved to NY.   Offense and being an older player were both outside the Beane era mold.

I am not sure how to interpret the first round selection.  I felt strongly the Bills would go offense in the first round.  To me, Kincaid was not just the player that will help the Bills the most on offense in 2023, but was also the BPA at the selection.  But a string of very good defensive players went in the rest of the round after the Bills took Kincaid which  indicates a committment to offense.

Scenario 1 - Bills are committed to this draft being about optimizing the offense.  The next logical step in this scenario is improving the oline. One thing I took away from the first round selection is that while Dawson Knox is a very good and highly compensated player, the Bills did not worry about hurting his feelings with the pick.  I don't think they care anymore about Spencer Brown's, Mitch Morse's or Ryan Bates feelings.

Based on this line of thinking there seems to be a 1A and a 1B plan.  IA is standing pat, and hoping Matthew Beregon, Joe Tipmann, or John Michael Schmitz falls to that position. I think there is a real possibility one of them could be there.  It seems unlikely the top IOL players 0'Cyrus Torrence and Steve Avila will be there at that pick.  This brings us to the 1B plan.  Maybe the Bills are happy to get 2 quality picks in the draft, and are willing to use further draft capital, or future draft capital to move up for Torrence or Avila.  The Bills are a pretty complete team now, and I am not sure we need to be stocking the practice roster.  So I think this is a viable option. Our second and third rounder, probably allows you to get one of Torrence and Avila.

Scenario 2 - The Bills took Kincaid because he was BPA, and that is the modus operandi for the draft.  I don't think they expected Kincaid to fall (although a number of internet simulation programs in the last week leading up to the draft did have Kincaid falling).  I think other players fans are high on will also fall unexpectedly to 59.  In that case I would expect the Bills to be neutral on offense vs defense and pick the BPA.  I think this group will include some of the players in this big group: WRs - Jalin Hyatt, Jonathan Mingo.  CB's Julius Brent, DJ Turner and Tryique Stevenson Other Defense, Trenton Simpson, Antonio Johnson, Tuli Tuipulotu, Derrick Hall, and Olinemen Joe Tippman, Matthew Bergeron, and Cody Mauch.      At this point it is tough to separate what I would want, from what I think the Bills would do.  But if all of those players are available, and the Bills are neutral on BPA, I think it would be one of the cornerbacks.  The 2B plan is to trade up to take Joey Porter who seems to be the true BPA going into the second round.  If he gets past Pittsburg, a 2&3 would might allow us to get Porter.  This would be a home run.

Scenario 3 - A shift to defensive need - I think there is a fan consensus the Bills current hole on defense at LB and future hole on the Dline with the expected departure of Ed Oliver next year.  In this case, I would expect the Bills to stand pat and take Drew Sanders or Trent Simpson, in that order, if they fall to 59. Otherwise it would likely be whoever they think is the best defensive interior lineman fit for the Bills. Keeanu Benton sticks out as the best of the the interior limeman who has a good chance of being available at that pick.

Overall, I think the Bills will be best served for 2023 and beyond by scenario 1.

    Thanks for the excellent post!

Great reference heading into this evening.

Personally I think it could go with any scenario outlined, and it will all depend on how the first 10 picks play out.  We don't have a 4th rounder now.

My thoughts are that we still need a MLB and RT as players who would compete to start, and the rest will be just roster fillers (with upside).

I'd be okay with losing Oliver in a trade that gets us to the top of round 2, and maybe gives us a day 3 pick to sweeten the deal.

I hear a lot about drafting BPA.  We debate endlessly on this board about BPA, BPA at a position of need, straight need, and so forth.

Some have said Beane took the BPA in Kincaid.

In my mind, taking BPA means you sit and wait for your turn in the draft and take your highest rated player.

I really don't think you can call a pick that you trade up for a BPA pick.

I'm curious what others think.  Partially because I'm a bit of a narcissist and want to keep proving my point that Beane almost always drafts for need. And moving up in the draft to select a pass catcher again is a need pick and not a BPA pick.

I think BPA relates to the draft board, even if you trade up.  I think the Bills wanted Kincaid, and thought there was a significant enough dropoff in value between him and their "next BPA" (hence the move).

  10. My top hopefuls.... in no particular order.

    DB Branch

    OT:  Harrison, Jones, Bergeron

    OG: Torrence, Avila

    WR:  Hyatt

    LB:  Simpson

    OC:  Schmitz, Wyper, Tippman

*If CB Porter or Smith slip all the way down.....  I'm "considering"...  Questions remain if White will ever be back to himself, and Elam is still developing as a ?  Can't have too many CB (but those two are the only I'd consider)

  11. Kincaid is going to be a beast to cover.  I don't think this is a knock on Knox either.  VERY different roles I think.

Kincaid will move around a lot more, kick out to the slot etc.  You have to account for him.

Knox is the prototypical TE, and let's not forget, had 6 TDs this past season.  I like the taller/physical options in the red zone.
