    Patience is a virtue.

Super Bowls are not easy to come by; neither are Conference Championship Games. They often are a matter of luck. How many SB's did Dan Fouts go to? How many Conference Championships has Lamar Jackson been to? Both had great coaches.

The Indianapolis Colts under Peyton Manning did not even make a SB until his ninth year, in 2006. They only made it to one Conference Championship before that:

    1998 - missed playoffs

    1999 - lost Div.

    2000 - lost WC

    2001 - missed playoffs

    2002 - lost WC

    2003 - lost Conf.

    2004 - lost Div.

    2005 - lost Div.

    2006 - won SB

2024 will be Josh's seventh year only. We still have time. I don't think you will do much better than McDermott with what's out there.

Did Manning win before or after head coaching change? Asking for a friend.

Sure, but I think Puka Nacua is a bit of an outlier. Otherwise the non-early picks among that list are slot receivers. Jayden Reed, Josh Downs, Tank Dell - I like those guys but that isn't what the Bills need. I like where Shakir is. A shifty underneath / slot receiver isn't what will take this offense on. Dell is probably a bit more than that because he is a genuine home run threat every time he touches the ball, but still my point stands. The explosive outside guys will go early.

I did not mean to suggest you can find a 1500 yard reciever in the fifth round. That certainly is an outlier.  My point, was probably not clear, but it was more related to the guys in the middle of the list. It was more about the fact that the Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Quentin Johnson type of first round draft picks did not pan out (For year 1) any better than the Michael Wilson or Jonathan Mingo type picks, in terms of actual production.  I think for the most part Rookie Wr's come with a cap.

This thread is misleading, with the expiring contracts this offseason HAS to be defensive focused because we, game-day quality wise, have under contract:

    1 DT

    3 DE

    3 LBers

    1 Safety

That’s before potentially needing to replace Poyer and White.

I don't think it is misleading.  The point is that a mediocre defense can probably hold the Chiefs to one punt in the playoffs.  And a good defense will also only hold them to one punt in the playoffs. In three playoff games against the chiefs, the McDermott defenses forced exactly four punts total. This includes fully healthy defenses).

We need more explosion on the outside. Sure I think we need a couple of pieces on defense - DL and Safety will have holes - but the primary focus should be explosive outside playmakers.

I will give them some credit... they focussed on OL last offseason (a year too late by my estimation) and it worked. They added Kincaid, that worked too. But the explosion outside needs to come this year.

Oline became a strength this year.  However, Morse is ancient, and Brown can be improved upon. I would not be opposed to the Bills further solidifying or upgrading these posisitons with early draft picks.  Its possible to get immediate impact from a rookie WR, but in real life without a top draft pick, its more of a crapshoot, and you can find these players in middle rounds. Its not clear that pick 28 would guarantee success vs pick 56 or 84.

    A new Head Coach!

I understand this sentiment.  I don't think it is likely though.  I also think it is a separate question from roster building though.

But we have another season of experience with Sean McDermott. While it is popular to credit all of Belichek's success to Brady, the only thing we know for sure is that he was 1 for 1 in being successful with an elite QB.  It seemed to me that over his career arc witht the Patriots, his vision on what it would take to win the super bowl changed from year to year and adapted to the personnel on hand.   My personal impression is that Coach McDermott has "A vision" on how to win a championship, and that he is on a constant quest to get the personnel to implement that vision.  It feels a bit like a Don Quixote quest to prove that his "complimentary football vision" can in fact win a championship and that the organization must pull together to prove this.  Stylewise I would prefer a coach who adapts to his teams personnel and optimizes that situation.  McDermott knows football. He is a good football coach.  I would be happy to see him abandon his quest and pivot in this direction equally as much I would like to see a new coach.

  6. My observation of the Bills - Chiefs game was that neither defense was effective in the game.  Bills forced one punt.  Chiefs only forced punts after Bills self-inflicted wound's of dropping passes.  Chiefs came to the game with a highly respected offense.  Bills came to the game with a broken and aged defense.  Against two of the top offenses in the NFL both were equally ineffective.

Its not clear to me that a defense can be built to stop these top offenses. Personally I feel like filling in the defensive hole with premium draft picks won't move the dial in the playoffs. I don't think we need a major rebuild on defense to hold the Chiefs to only 1 punt in a playoff game. I think we can patch together a defense capable of doing that.

On the other hand, it seems like the much improved 2023 oline and the addition of Dalton Kindcaid put us one step closer to being an unstoppable force.  If we could use draft capital to add another sure handed WR, the we might have scored 35 against the Chiefs.   Another way of saying it is , fix the defense with the defensive equivalents of Sherfield and Harty level players, and shift to building the NFL's best offense. Having the best NFL offense is in reach.

I am open minded to learning about how we can retool the defense to stop the Chiefs in the playoffs, but we have never yet done that, healthy or injured.

Let's not forget Andy Reid's playoff history before Mahomes.

How many NFC playoff games did he lose with those Eagles teams? Then a few more with the Chiefs. It took him a long, long time to get where he is now.

McDermott doesn't have the wins now, but Reid made the playoffs a dozen times before getting over the hump (yes, he did make a SB appearance with the Eagles once too).

How many championship games did Reid lose after he got his first generational talent at QB? Since Mahomes is in his 6th straight championship game, this should not be hard to figure out.

  8. As far as the roster goes, step 1 is bringing in a defensive coordinator with a history of winning divisional playoff games.  Tell him he needs to figure out what he wants on defense, but he is not getting premium draft picks or big free agency dollars this year.  Piece together what we can, and it will have to do.

Then build to the teams strength.  Try to trade spencer brown and use that plus the first round pick to get the best LT you can.  Then use the second round pick to draft the best center you can.  We could have a great oline if those selections are done correctly.   Diggs, Shakir, Kincaid give the team three solid pass catchers.  Bring in the best WR you can get with the rest of the draft.  Based on history, the defense is going to suck in the playoffs regardless of personnel.

I'm just as mad/dissapointed that we lost last night as any other bills fan today. Last week I heard alot on local sports talk radio about how this was our year and how if we just beat kc, it's gotta be our year finally. OK, based on what?!

The last 8 games have been fun. Nobody thought this team would win the division, let alone be the 2 seed and host 2 home playoff games. Having said that, our offense needs serious help. Allen is an absolute animal, but he can't do absolutely everything. I've seen Diggs take alot of flack today on social media and it's well deserved. He's been non existentent the last 8 or so games. Harty and sherfield were complete non factors the entire season. Gabe played nowhere near what we (and the team) expected. Knox was hurt and even when he wasn't, he wasn't exactly a game changer. Kinkaid and Shakir were the lone bright spots, and Shakir really didn't show up until after Dorsey was gone. Cook was great, but we need more. The defense came through, even as beat up as they've been, but in today's nfl you cannot rely solely on the defense. WGR brought up a great point this morning, saying how kc has won superbowls when their defense was ranked in the mid 20's. We need more offense.

I could go on and on, but Imo this wasn't the team that was gonna win it all. I was worried about last night's game, and even had they pulled it out, I'd never believe they could get through Baltimore. Houston has a similar offense to Buffalo and they couldn't muster more than 3 points on offense against Baltimore. Ya I know they have a rookie qb, but stroud is a beast. It'll be super interesting to see what kc does against Baltimore next week. I think Baltimore beats kc by 10 🤷 thanks for letting me vent

This was the week that mattered.  Prior to the season more or less 100% of Bills fans expected the team to make the divisional round of the playoffs.  And they did.  And they lost again.  This team was built to win last year.  But with an aged defense and salary cap issues, it is not clear next years team is poised to be better.

So I will flip the question back to you, if not this year, when?

This is what I’ve been yelling about for weeks. Game ending drives when he wants to kill clock BUT we still need to score.

This is the core problem "complimentary football" has become Billsspeak for "all hands on deck to make the defense look better than it is"

McDermott’s playoff record against teams seeded 5-7 is 5-0. His playoff record against teams seeded 1-4 is 0-6

Govenor's observation is the main reason for the statistic posted by BarleyNY.

  11. Bills fought hard tonight. It wasn't enough.   The Bills under Sean McDermott remind me of of Rory MacAvoy (Kevin Costner) in Tin Cup.  "I qualified for the US Open playing the back nine with only a seven iron"  And every other team is Davis Simms (Don Johnson) who responds with "why".   The Bills seem to make things so much harder than they need to be. "We won six in a row just to stumble into the playoffs".  Why does the team with so much talent put itself in that postion.

    The Good:

    • Bills made it to the divisional round of the playoffs
    • Josh Allen played a great game.  It was not quite perfect, but it was  a game winning performance.

    The Bad:

    • Bills did not make it out of the divional round of the playoffs
    • Defensive performance. Chiefs offense is excellent. The Bills had injuries on defense.  But it did not acquit itself well.  Chiefs scored on every drive until late in the game.
    • Team has been investing in defensive linemen with draft picks and free agent cap for years. Tonight we had 10 healthy linemen.  They provided no pressure, and were gashed by the run.  The ROI on this investment is almost -100%

    The Ugly:

    • Special teams. Failed fake punts. Bad punts, missed FGs.  Just awful.
    • Each recent Bills seasons seems to end with an emphasis on the adversity and drama the team faced.  Not really sure other teams end up quite this way (Eagles seem to be similar this year)

    The Future:

    • Once again the Bills focus on how much adversity they faced is the real problem indicates that the only choice will be to "run it back' and hope next time ends better.

Baltimore's offense averages roughly 15 fewer points per game with Huntley at the helm vs. Lamar and Baltimore's record with Huntley as the main guy is 4-8 (including the playoff loss) vs. their record with Lamar being 59-24. They are a ton worse with Huntley as the QB. Stumbling into the playoffs with him playing the last couple games does not mean it's not a huge downgrade.

Imagine the Bills chances without Josh.

  13. Lamar is proven to be a far better QB than I ever expected. Kudos to him.  However, in terms of importance to his team, Tyler Huntley demonstrated last year, that the Ravens can win even without Lamar.  The even were competetive in the playoff game against the Bengals last year.

The Bills hopefully will never be tested in this regard, but I think we all know the offense stalls completely without Josh.   I think Josh is more valuable. If you just go by stats, than you have to think Brock Purdy is more valuable to his team, than 30 other QBS in the NFL.  Brock is an excellent QB with a great future.  But he is not more important to the 49ers, than quite a few other QBs are to their teams.

  14. The "double dip" is a myth.  Its an alternating possession game.  If each team has the same number of possessions in the first half, neither team got an advantage, but that means the team who kicked off first ended with the ball.   In the second half if each team has the same number of possessions, the team that kicked off has the last possession of the game, which proves critical time and time again.

If the team who recievest the ball first in the half also has the final possession, that is the actual "double dip" because it means the recieve first team actually had one more possession.

Defer or receive probably does not matter statistically.  If you defer and get a 3 and out, that feels like momentum gained.  If you receive and score, that fills like momentum gained.  But in reality these guys are professionals, and momementum is not particularly important.  To the pros each possession is the same, either a win for the offense, or a win for the defense.  (maybe field goals are a tie) .
