  1. This was my post from Wednesday before today's game.  I received many negative comments because of the stats I posted regarding the game outcome!

Even though we lost I feel redeemed!  And - we beat the point spread experts!!!

ORIGINAL POST:  The smart men that know the NFL inside & out are making the Patriots 7 point favorites Sunday at New Era Field.  It’s actually a smart bet!

They are basing this on a game as follows:

-Bills control time of possession 32-28 mins **   (BILLS 33 - PATS 27)

-Brady throws for 238 yards  ** (160 yards)

-Allen throws for 170 yards on 16 completions  ** (153 yards)

-Bills rush for 142 yards ** (135 yards)

-PATS rush for 105 yards ** (74 yards)

-Each team punts 4 times **  (Pats 9 and Bills 6)  I was way off here!

    SCORE:  24-16

This brings up a topic that I have some additional thoughts on.  I do not think that the wind has as big of an effect at the field level as it used to.  Something about the redesign work, bigger scoreboard, added scoreboards, etc. has mitigated the wind at the field level.  I hate to sound like the old man that talks about how it was tougher in the old days but there were often games where the offense simply could not pass the ball moving toward the scoreboard endzone.  Of course that's when there was only 1 scoreboard in the stadium.

Marv's first game as their HC was against the Steelers in November 1986.  The Bills won largely because Robb Riddick could grind out rushing yards and keep the clock moving in the quarters when they were driving toward the scoreboard end and thus eat up the time the Steelers had available to them when they were to move toward the tunnel end.

Here is a link to the box score of the game with some really ugly passing stats:

    Bills/Steelers 1986

It says the wind was 27 mph that day.  I can't recall any game that has played like that since the remodel.  Often now the flags at the top of the stadium are ripping but the flags on the goalposts are barely moving.

I was at that game - so long ago.  The winds were a huge factor.

  3. -SUNNY

-Game time Temperature:  66 degrees  (-17 from  last Sunday!)

    -Zero chance of Rain

-WINDS  9 MPH from the ENE with gusts to 14 MPH

** Winds in the Buffalo area are normally from the West !  At 9-14 mph they won't have  that much effect on the game as they did last week  - - BUT - -

Buffalo, by virtue of its position downwind of Lake Erie, is one of the nation's windiest cities, and as a result, New Era Field often is a difficult stadium for QB’s & Kickers with swirling winds that change direction & strength rapidly.  This is exacerbated by the stadium's design. The field is 50 feet (15 m) below ground level, while the top of the upper deck stands only 60 feet above ground. When the winds come in, they immediately drop down into the bowl, causing the stadium's signature wind patterns.

  4. A big-time concert fan WHO went to that show on 9/26/82 to see the WHO wrote -

I have been to over 450 shows in my life and one of my favorite questions to ask people is "What was the best concert you ever went to?" My own personal answer was The Who at Rich Stadium on their so-called farewell tour. I don't think that The Who were generally near the top of their game during this tour but on this day (a Sunday) they were greeted by the best audience I have ever been a part of and they knew what they had. The energy in that stadium was incredible. David Johansen warmed things up with a 30 minute set highlighted by "Stranded In The Jungle" and his Animals medley. The Clash drew some ire from reactionary fans but delivered a reliable set.

The Who kicked ass and took names during their set. The sound was very good and the audience was just electric. As seasoned performers, The Who knew what they had and delivered in spades. No one who attended that show will forget the rain only during "Love Reign O'er Me" In fact I heard a random stranger talk about it eight years after the show at a Bob Dylan show in Toronto in June of 1990. It was one of those priceless moments and it only rained during "Love Reign O'er Me".

  5. Last Sunday 69,448 fans jammed New Era Field for the 2019 home opener.  That’s 97% of listed capacity.  In 2018 attendance was 69,187 at the opener vs. the Chargers.

Remember when that same stadium held 82,290?  Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the largest official attendance for a concert at Rich Stadium.   80,107 came to hear the WHO on September 26, 1982.

I realize the NFL wants Buffalo to build a new stadium.  It’s the cool thing to do with plush suites, bigger video boards and supposedly it will provide more revenue to visiting teams.

WHY in Buffalo?  We consistently draw to 90% capacity.  I realize the economics and population in the Buffalo area doesn’t fit the NFL model.  So what?  We ARE Buffalo and that’s the way it is.  We’re a special city with a special NFL football team.

Any other old memories from our old stadium???

I wish the optimist in me could see the Bills getting a win this weekend, but I don't think that happens. As for all the media pundits expressing their confidence in the Pats' win, there's just no way to justify that they shouldn't. Until the Bills can win consistently AND prove they can beat the Patriots, I don't blame a single person for doubting it. That said, if the Defense shows out, then the Bills are in this game no matter what. I think I'm MORE concerned with the Pats Defense holding the Bills Offense than I am the Bills Defense holding the Pats Offense.

Brady will Brady....but I could see the Bills' D keeping the score low while giving up yards.

I agree the biggest problem will be gaining yards or sustaining drives vs. the PATS D.

Vegas doesn't base the points spread on a single detailed hypothetical scenario...

This comes from Vegas!  Do you think they throw out a point spread Monday AM just based on home/away records or historical trends?  They build a program for all the games, get a spread and then stick to it.  If the weather at New Era gets ugly or Edelman can't play that may throw a point or two!

HOW DO WE BEAT THAT SCENARIO ?

  9. During his weekly appearance on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show," Brady shared some kind words for Bills Mafia ahead of Sunday's game in western New York.

"I love playing up there. It's one of the great environments in NFL football," Brady said. "It's an old stadium, but they get incredible support. We've played up there early [kickoff time], we've played up there late, we've played up there when they've not had great records, when they've had great records, and their fans are into it. They cheer, they love football."

That isn't the only reason Brady loves playing in Buffalo. The six-time Super Bowl champion owns an eye-popping 30-3 record against the Bills in his career. His 15 victories in Buffalo are the most by a starting quarterback since 2001, and his 38 touchdowns there trail only Ryan Fitzpatrick (39) for most by a QB in that span.

Sorry but that is exactly what Pancho is, a publicity, feel good story, nothing wrong with it but that is what it is.

Pancho & Family should have been (be) thrilled with all the access he got, announcing draft picks, getting calls from the war room, visits on the field at TC, players visiting him at the hospital.

Most organizations wouldnt have done anything "for him" but each team has fans like Pancho and there are others "Panchos" out there at other cities they never get the recognition he did.  There are  thousands of Bills fans equally deserving that dont get recognition.

IMO Bills organization deserves credit for the way the recognized him including yesterday.

    100% agree.

Huh. I watched the game in Cape Town, thousands of miles away, and I just couldn't get into it the way I normally do. When they went down in the second half I couldn't get myself that worked up about whether they would lose or win. And I NEVER feel like that. Happy they won, and there were some fun plays, but I can't remember ever feeling so foggy about what was actually a pretty good game, let alone the home opener for an undefeated Bills team. Strange energy.

I'm an old fan and I had the same feelings?  It seems the NFL has become a different experience.  For me, too much nonsense off the field and way too much money being made off loyal fans who just want to see a competitive game.

We had one but they cut Shady.

I agree a big body WR would be a nice add.

But, I would favor a two TE, single back, two WR formation when Kroft gets healthy.  A combination of Knox, Kroft, Brown, and Beasley will be very difficult to defend. Both of the TEs could split out into a 3 wide formation or both could be on the LOS to run.

All that said, the real need is a pass rusher. Murphy is still terrible. Lawson will never be a pass rusher. Oliver has not generated much push.  He will take a long time to develop. They should trade for Vonn Miller.

Murphy is a veteran disappointment and Oliver doesn't impress me at all.  He gets tied up with the opponents OL way too much and accomplishes zero.

Exactly. I think it’s a bit of a joke when fans get butt hurt over their team being shafted in rankings. Go win the games. That’s all that matters. We haven’t done anything yet and there is good reason for “experts” to be skeptical. Nothing to see here...

I agree!  I'm not butt hurt at all.  I think way too many people have jumped on the Allen train with out seeing anything to justify it.
