  1. We were doing good getting into 3rd and short till they got that free blitzer and Josh had to get rid of it.

Not sure we are going to pick up 6 on WR/bubble screens with how good their LBs are, we will see 3rd and 6 down there is not the easiest and we got to see how TB was going to play those situations and alignments and came away with 3.

Let's hope they are focused and prepared. I'm afraid they might press too much.

Hard to find that balance this year between execution - getting it done and playing too tight which causes hesitation and timing issues.

If Allen sees a lane, he should scramble and get into this game early and try to get into a good cadence. Just can't predict how horrible and how much interference the zebras are going to create. Hard to get into a rhythm when you are walking backwards after making a good play.

This has been my concern about Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator.

I'm actually NOT too worried about his gameplanning or playcalls. I don't always love his personnel usage and I don't always feel he maximizes the talent on his roster, but even THAT isn't my biggest concern.

No, my biggest concern has always been -- and remains -- that he doesn't actually know how to coach Josh Allen. He doesn't know what buttons to push, and when. He doesn't know the things to be in his ear about, to emphasize and de-emphasize. He doesn't know how to hype him up when he's too low or calm him down when he's too high.

Brian Daboll had a great relationship with Josh. He seemed to know how to do all of these things. I don't actually think Daboll was worlds better as a PLAYCALLER than Dorsey is. I just think he was way better at coaching Josh Allen.

The way that Josh's decision-making and his seeing of open targets in the middle of the field seem to have regressed, his funky rollercoaster of mindsets from game to game...all of this seems like coachable stuff, and I fear no one is doing it, or at least doing it effectively. Not Dorsey, not Brady, no one.

Nothing I've seen this season has changed my mind on this, and in fact, this season has only reinforced this notion.

This may have some merit, as just liking and hand-picking your OC does not mean that Dorsey is the right guy to hold him accountable and as you said "push the right buttons".

It takes more than just the X's and O's or even friendship to get the most out of a QB.

We have no idea what goes on behind those walls and that is likely a good thing.

Idiotic take (not you, the article). Clearly Josh is working on the mental side of his game and always has been. But the idea that reflection, experimentation, trying to grow and evolve (which of course will come with ups and downs) is somehow weak or confused or unhelpful is absurd. Sure overthinking things can be a problem in any area of life, but if that's happening, continued reflection will help him see that too. The article could have been interesting; the topic is interesting. But it's such a knee-jerk and/or clickbait angle.

Journalism is just about dead for news in general and certainly trending that way in sports reporting. Not sure who to blame as many folks have the attention span of a gnat and want "drive-by" reporting or what passes for reporting. Sober, well thought out and researched reporting is not as market driven.

Ad-click revenue has driven the demand for less news and more sensational and/or divisive headlines that can get people to click on them.

And yes, I agree that Allen reflecting about his mental space and approach is not earth-shattering or worthy of that much conjecture.

I honestly would be more concerned if he wasn't processing those things.

  5. Hunter Henry also bowled over our defenders in coverage down at the goal line freeing up their receiver for a TD with no OPI called on their very obvious pick play.

Murray picks a guy to free Knox and the offensive PI flag was thrown.

Neutral zone infraction on Torrence a guard. Diggs getting obviously mugged on his routes. A phantom DPI call on 3rd and long to extend a NE scoring drive...

We played bad, but the officiating was horrible all game long.

They are not mutually exclusive things, both can be true. In that game, I left feeling we got the short end of the officiating stick.

All I ask is that if they are going to call ticky-tacky or phantom penalties on one team they need to call them on the other too.

I hate a flag fest, but if the laundry is going to fly call it the same for both sides.

  6. Finally caught up with Joe's Locked On podcast and mirrored much of what I thought I saw.

Didn't realize how much Williams, Bernard, and Taron struggled in the middle and as we suspected our interior DT play was poor.

So an easy day for Mac to step up clean and deliver to open guys on in-breaking routes.

Also Torrence and Morse got manhandled.

I have been preaching prioritizing prospects for both a younger 1-tech and C for years to groom as anchors to both lines and that has largely been ignored by OBD.

Mitch is a good C, but struggles with bigger, stronger DTs, and every team in the AFC East has made having one a priority.

    Miami - Wilkins

    Jets - Williams

    NE (technically a NT) Barmore

Barmore took Torrence and Morse to school quite a bit in that game making it hard for Allen to step up and into throws or escape the pocket.

So we will see how or if our Bills can adapt and make adjustments for Thurs.

I was at the game and it seemed like Josh missed a number of throws.  Watching the game now at home on DVR.  Some harder than others but Josh missed a few throws we've seen him make before.  The Pats came out running the ball down our throats.  Not really surprising given our injuries but I have to wonder if they didn't try to coach around our inability to stop the run and in turn got Mac Jones going.  Totally reminded me of Cinci last year.  Can't stop the run and as a consequence makes the pass that much harder to defend.  Not sure averaging 9 penalties a game (the last 3 games) is helping either.

Dodson is a bit more of a downhill thumper as a run defender than Bernard or Williams, but as soon as McD brought him in Mac just used play action and lobbed passes behind him because he is not as good recognizing where he needs to be in coverage and getting there on time.

Eerily similar to how broken this defense got when DaQuan was out last year.

We missed the double teams he draws and his push up the middle collapsing the pocket. We also missed having Oliver's disruptive ability to split the double teams, beat protection schemes, and  knife into the backfield.

The team looked sloppy yesterday executing in all phases, but I thought the officiating was pretty abysmal in general.

No it's not. Murray ran square into the guy without turning his head. New England didn't even touch any of our guys - we picked ourselves because we weren't playing any version of in/out man coverage you'd like.

I watched that replay and he made contact with both 25 and 7. He knocked 25 to the ground.

I believe they could have called offensive PI if that contact happens more than a yard beyond the LOS.

My point earlier in this thread on our pick plays was that our receivers don't get their heads around, don't look like they continue their "route", and throw their arms up in mock innocence which is begging for a flag.

This is 100% on scheme. You have to have ways to switch off routes in man coverage vs bunch sets.

That same kind of "pick" we were flagged on for the Knox nullified TD.

Folks don't like to look or mention officiating, but it did impact this game and the Bills' ability to move the ball, score, and kept NE drives alive.

Hate to watch games like that.

Eppy almost had a sack on the last Patriots drive but only time I saw him. I still haven't seen or heard Poona's name once all season.

He was in on one stop he chased down early when Settle got blown out of his gap.

Much of the yards we gave up were outside the tackles.

Looked like the Pats had two helmets on him when he was in and he was not giving up too much ground.

There was so much crap going on elsewhere that I did not like that I stopped looking for Poona plays.

Like Dane playing 15 yards off a receiver the Pats called up from their practice squad to give up an easy 1st down conversion or completely whiffing on an end around tackle.

At some point you should read what was written and realize I am blaming both the playcaller and the player. Running the ball and the threat of running is a major weapon for Josh, that has been schemed out of the playbook and he has been admonished over and over to stop freelancing and he chose to listen to that stupid bit of advice. He has poor judgment as it is but now we've removed half of his ability to create wow plays to make up for the boneheaded ints he throws.

If the only way for Josh to be effective is for the team to scheme runs for him then that is a QB ability ceiling that rarely leads to good outcomes.

The reason Josh can't roll out at will (to the right like he did for a few seasons) is that defenses know the tendencies and have counter measures for him and our scramble drills for receivers.

Those off schedule things were never in the playbook to begin with to be schemed out. The league defenses adjusted and they became less effective. As they usually do when countering the tendencies of mobile QBs overly reliant on their legs.

Now if you are mobile, can roll out either side, extend plays, and are accurate, then that is a different story.

That kind of QB play takes a lot of off season work, practice, and the right baseline talent.

Some QBs just don't have the pocket presence or athletic ability to evade the rush and extend plays. Allen does, but his accuracy has been all over the place.

This narrative of Allen being locked into the pocket and handcuffed by the coaching staff is delusional.

Is he being asked to go through progressions and hit the open receiver on schedule? Probably, but so is every other NFL level QB.

Thought he threw that 4th down Knox drop a couple of beats too late at least. Knox should have still caught it but we were screaming at the TV before Allen saw him. He certainly could have made it easier.

Thought the same thing, but was more angry at stone hands.

The thing is, every single time he has gotten banged up, it has been in the pocket or behind the LOS.  He has never gotten hurt while running.  He may be banged up now, but should be back to normal in a couple weeks.  This offense will not get better until you either let him start being himself again or you completely overhaul it and make it an under center offense that uses play action a lot.  You have to get the defense to respect the run, especially Allen's ability to take off at any time.  Right now, they have no reason to do so and that is why the same offense that used to be one of the most dynamic in the league is now easy to defend.

When folks talk about Allen running they are usually referring to him scrambling and not designed runs which is one key difference that often gets lost

Secondly, defenses are doing a  better job sealing the edges and keeping Allen from escaping the pocket...especially to his right where he prefers to roll out to throw or run.

More defenses are keeping a fast spy on Allen and they are on him as soon as he does roll out.

If you watch, many of Allen's scrambles now happen between the Tackles when and if that opens up if LBs and S's vacate the middle.

Defenses have adapted and there is less open field for Allen to exploit. It is not like it is always an available option for him and coaches are saying "no".

Sometimes he is able to do this more later in games, but defenses are often sitting back in those situations trying to prevent the big play so giving up more space for him to run.

blaming allen is ridiculous. the first play on offense was his fault, but he was scrambling for his life out there today and still did enough to win the game

Then just blame him for the INT or the Diggs overthrow or the passes to no one.

Many of those happened when he had a clean pocket or what passes for one in the NFL.

It is never black and white, but the times he had time and space to operate he really struggled today. And I have no problem blaming him for those.

I also think the OL often struggled in the first half figuring out protections or just holding their blocks.

    It was both.

Defense is just not good with all the injuries and Ken Dorsey has effectively neutered Josh with his garbage playcalling.

At some point some fans will need to actually come to terms with Allen simply playing poorly.

Making bad choices where to go with the ball, staring down receivers and throwing INTs, dirting easy passes, and air mailing passes out of bounds or overthrowing receivers that are wide open down field.

It's not all Allen and Dorsey can do a better job with some situational calls and personnel packages and some players have to execute better.

However when players are schemed open and Allen just can't hit those passes that is not on your OC or the plays called

Bench or trade Knox and get rid of this ridiculous 12 personnel bull####. It’s not working and Knox sucks. Make Kinkaid the TE and go back to playing an offense from this century.

    Every team runs 12 personnel.

The reason the Bills are running more of it is because they believe that Knox and Kincaid need to both be on the field.

That is debatable I guess. The other reason is to give additional pass pro help to Brown and our OL to better protect Allen.

How effective that has been can be debated too as pass pro was not very good this game.
