The overwhelming consensus I’m seeing, from other fan bases and from respected former players, is that it was the wrong call. Yes, the Bills put themselves in that position, but everything that happened before that moment is irrelevant. They were in position to win. The game was ultimately decided off the field. What makes it sting even more is the Adams call just 28 hours later. The league’s aggressive effort to justify this one only reinforces the idea that they know they got it wrong. The video clearly shows possession, a football move upfield, and a knee down. By any reasonable standard, it was more of a catch than the Adams play, and surely the Worthy catch we all know so well from last year. I genuinely don’t understand how anyone can watch that replay and not see that the ball only moves after it’s ripped out, after Cooks should have already been ruled down by contact. How was this not even reviewed? I’m not claiming the NFL is about to collapse or that fans will suddenly walk away, but history should serve as a warning. There was a time when baseball and basketball dominated in ways they no longer do. If the league wants to protect its credibility, moments like this matter more than they seem. The fact that these networks have paid shills in the booth to justify these awful calls should tell us all something.
