  1. I think it would be nice aspiration to try to be the first team since the Browns in the Mid-80's to have to 1000 yard backs in freddie and cj. This being the focus would help:

    1. an aenmic defense

    2. mediocre at best receivers

    3. help fitz not to throw intp so many double and triple teams.

A first round pick on a DE, corner or WR is what I would like in my xmas stocking this year along with some healthy starters.

  2. All true Doc, but the lack of depth can only be addressed in FA, and we have avowed a strategy of "rebuilding through the draft" (see my post above about keeping the team minimally competetive at the lowest cost). Without depth, we're going to see the cycle occur every year, fast start by young talent and then hit a wall when the first string starts getting hurt.

Nothing will change until ownership does.

  3. Two reasons. First, Donahoe/G. Williams were dumb enough to let the best strength and conditioning coach in the NFL go, that is Rusty Jones. We had better conditioned athletes under him and several players swore by his methods (rather than swearing at him). Do you think Dareus would have a flabby gut with Jones around? If Dareus can do the conditioning and weight loss that Jones had Bruce Smith do, Dareus might become an impact player (rather than impacted).

THAT RUSTY MOVE IN PARTICULAR I NEVER UNDERSTOOD. DURING THE SUPERBOWL YEARS THEY WERE ALWAYS RELATIVELY HEALTHY. WTF?

  4. I actually detest the Jets more than the Pats. Thay being said, Bills played scared and it started with conservative play calling by Gailey. The offense stunk. The defense is way too inconsistent. One week they play lights out (e.g. eagles, washington) the next week they let an avg quarterback embarass them. Almost every play should be an all out blitz. At least hurt Sanchez so that he swallows his own tongue after continuous hits.

Yep, the ultra conservative fun up the middle for 1.6 yards per carry was ridiculous.

  5. All of the sensationalism and Bill’s fever after the first three weeks was fun, but when you look at it, I believe more of it was fueled by how we got to a 3-0 start, (exciting come from behind wins against two teams), and not the fact we were 3-0. If you go back to the midpoint of last year, the Bills could have won how many games against good playoff teams – (see loses to KC, Baltimore, New England and Pittsburgh). So we start out this year winning 2 similar type games we had lost last year and all of the sudden the national spotlight is on Buffalo that we somehow figured it out. Well guess what, we just got a couple of bounces that we did not get in those loses and ended up with the “W’s”. In yesterday’s game – we did not get the bounces and lost.

I am not a “doomsayer” but really believe, come Devils Night (aka Oct 30th), this team will be sub .500 and exactly what we thought in August – headed in the right direction, but simply missing a few key ingredients to be something special over the long haul. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see the football God’s have more bounce in the Bills favor than not, but when you go into battle with talent that arguably would not start for many other NFL teams, you some up short time and again. Average or sub – McKelvin, Spiller, all receivers not named Stevie, Kelsey, Chambers, Merriman, they’ve gotten national recognition, but on the coattails of good fortune and not being special). The nice development on the offseason, the realization that Fitzpatrick belongs, Darius will be a great Pro, and the O-Line is much improved. Now don’t go crying out that I left Freddie off – if you were a Bills fan, you knew going in that he belongs n the NFL.

Understand, this is not a response to the Bills lose yesterday, in fact, it would read the same had they won – Yin and Yang are just evening out from last year…

    Sub 500?

  6. The St. Petersburg Times ran an article today called "Top Ten Most Underappreciated Buccaneers". Pretty interesting stuff. Since it's a bye week, thought I'd run through my list of all-time underappreciated Bills (in no particular order). And no, you can't include Phil Hansen. If you're name is on the friggin' wall, you can't be friggin' underappreciated.

    1. Jim Braxton. Did the dirty work for O.J. Powerful runner in his own right.

    2. Bobby Chandler. One of the best possession receivers in Bills' history. Great blocker for O.J., especially for someone his size. Had a bunch of productive seasons after being traded to Oakland.

    3. Mark Pike. Bad luck being a great special teams player on a team with the best special teams player of all time.

    4. Frank Lewis. Jerry Butler had more flash but Lewis put together several strong seasons with the Bills.

    5. Jim Ritcher. What was it? Something like sixteen years of solid left guard play?

    6. Charles Rhomes. I remember him being a pretty good cornerback for us for a long time.

    7. Pete Metzelaars. Strange career. Started for us for a bunch of years. Got benched for a few years in favor of Keith McKellar and then started again for a bunch of years after McKellar was gone. Strong blocker and dependable receiver.

    8. Derrick Burroughs. He was really, really good. Better CB than Nate Odomes. Always thought we would have won Super Bowl XXV if he hadn't suffered career ended injury in 1989.

    9. Daryl Talley. Underappreciated for first half of career. Pretty well appreciated after 1990.

    10. Fred Jackson. He'll be off this list soon enough. Pay the man!

    No Phil Hanson?

  7. I think they lose, at most, two more games.

  8. Only if he completes it for a touchdown.

    Otherwise, no.

The point is that by running it is a virtual certainty you are up by 3 with little time left and a significant chance you are up by seven with way less time on the clock than if that pass goes for a score.

  9. My preseason prediction was 10-6, and 4-2 at the bye, which is now the worst they can do.

I had us losing to the Jets twice, so those are both now in play. With some luck, 11 or 12 wins is possible now. However, I expect to see some fairly significant changes going forward:

I don't see the Bills keeping up the scoring pace on O, but I also see the D getting better, so the ppg against will also fall.

I see the biggest change happening on defense. I think the defense will tighten up, especially once McGee and Williams are back. I really liked what I saw from some of the young'uns Sunday--Carrington, Moats, and Shep. I think Merriman is actually playing really well. And Barnett...what can you say? Once the CBs get some reinforcements, the D will start to shut things down more consistently.

One of the reasons I Billieved the Bills could be a turn-around team was that they would have a swing of 7-8 points per game this year; that is, the O would score more (18 avg last year), and the D would give up less (27 last year). The O is scoring 15 more/ppg (33) and the D is giving up 3ppg less (24). I think we'll see both of those #s come down, which still translates into wins.

If we are 4-2 at the bye, then I think they end up 11-5; otherwise, 12-4 with a victory Sunday.

I think you hit animportant nailon teh head. I am hoping McGee rests for this game as well and we can have him back 100% the rest of the way. I think that and Merriman showing more signs of life, Williams being back will make the D much better (yards wise--takeaways they are world beaters). I also assume Leodis will be benched in favor of Florence once McGee is back.

  10. We are not on the team so we are allowed to look ahead. And be overly optimistic. Based upon how they are playing and how the opponents are looking I think the following is very possible. Maybe an additional loss to Washington, Dallas or one of the Jets games, but otherwise 13-3!

  11. I'm on record as touting our defensive secondary as our team's strongest unit. I stand by that claim, and would go so far as to say we should give them more responsibility in the scheme.

IMO, the most effective way to accomplish this by doing something we rarely do: BLITZ.

Posters here are right to rail against our pass-rush. But the truth of the matter is, the only time we ever see anything which even remotely resembles a pass rush is when we send an extra linebacker, or a corner, or a safety on a blitz. What a novel idea! Watching other teams who consistently pressure the quarterback, they're always sending a guy from the backfield.

I think our secondary is strong enough to lock up on the receivers (see: Jets defensive strategy). It's high risk, high reward, no doubt, but at this point, our defense couldn't POSSIBLY be worse, so we might as well do something to put ourselves in a position to make a big play.

Trent Edwards wasn't cutting it, he gone.

Marshawn Lynch wasn't cutting it, he gone.

IMO, George Edwards, by playing too conservatively (something we're not strong enough up front to do) isn't cutting it. Bye week coming up, he gone?

Yep. What do we possibly have to lose by getting more creative /aggressive? (except more games, which we will lose anyway as each opposing QB sits back there all day)

  12. I think if you really break it down, it's Ralph. All the guys who had a plan, he got rid of because they wouldn't conceid to his meddling. The guys who let him get in the way, can't succeed.

It's almost become painfully obvious to me now...

Ralph is the only thing that hasn't changed. His genius idea to fire Bill Polian. Look at Colts v Bills fortunes after that brilliant move.

  13. Ok Bills fans. Tyler Thigpen? Really? As much as I hate to say it, the only QB that can help this franchise NOW is Michael Vick. So if you want your franchise QB then trade a 1st rounder for him now. The Bills need a QB that can run, because from what we have seen so far that is exactly what he is going to be doing.

No matter who you put in the game they are not going to succeed. This line is terrible. I know you all can see it. So stop putting the blame on Trent. Those interceptions weren't his fault. Those sacks weren't his either. He is not perfect, but he is not entirely to blame.

So root and cheer for Fitz, or Brohm, or whoever the hell goes in, but in the end the result will be the same. Until this line is either upgraded or they suddenly start to "gel" together this team will struggle. Just get over it, live with it, deal with it, and hope for a better 2011.

Yep. Most successful QB we have had since Kelly was Flutie. Why? Because he was hard to hit.

  14. Okay, so this is a little early but you know the Bills' scouts are watching games and front office is (should be) thinking ahead. Do us a favor next year (especially Mr. Wilson). STOP TRYING TO OUTSMART EVERYONE!

The Bills biggest problem the past five years or so is that they keep trying to outsmart other front offices. For example, drafting the ego healthy (but otherwise unhealthy) McGahee when he's got to sit for a year. Drafting Whitner at #10 where you don't draft safties. Drafting Maybin as a one year starter trying to catch an amazing athlete on the upside. Drafting dumb as a doorknob Lynch and trying to pass him off as a character guy. Drafting waterbug Parrish in the 2nd round. Drafting Spillar #9 this year when you have two RB and no OL.

In short, stop trying to draft "the best available talent". You have proven you have no clue who that is! Please draft the closest thing to a solid player at a position we need. Maybe you'll get lucky and actually build a team.

Every time I see Ngata play and I think of whitner it makes me sad.
