    draft?

Granted this is limited game footage, but don't know how anyone can criticize Edmunds on any of these plays.

I recall numerous times that Zo was blown out of the play....im sure Edmunds was at times too...just hopeful we rebound we'll next week and focus on finding quality depth this offseason. Entire front seven was disappointing yesterday

For the record, I'm a big Zo fan...but only as a sub package and special teams player.

Again......I've followed the Cover1 footage of Edmunds...........I enjoy their work but don't always agree entirely with their conclusions.

And as I said........Shazier is at least an interesting comparison.

But anyone who followed Shazier at Ohio State knew he was over-aggressive and basically out-of-control violent and he needed to reign that in to take advantage of his great speed and quickness.

Edmunds is just flat out lost in traffic most of the time.

But I've been on here for 20 years now and I have had lots of people like yourself tell me how wrong I was because they played that position in college or coached some HS football or whatever and the reality is that I'm almost always right if I am talking about it.

I'd love it if Edmunds turned into what looked like an instinctive all-pro beast of a MLB............it's duly noted that you are certain he will, coach.:flirt:

I appreciate that you at least consider and can respect my opinion.

I haven't been on here 20 years but respect that.  Hoping for a strong finish next week and progression by all of our young players this offseason...good times ahead

Manny Lawson is a horrible comp...

Try Ryan Shazier, as I mentioned last night.  Both came into the NFL needing to improve on strength/block shedding and play recognition.  Like Edmunds, Shazier had a rookie season of ups and downs, but constantly improved (though Shazier struggled with injuries his 1st season).

I wish I could watch a game with some of you guys, Badolbilz and scottlaw.  I'd put my football background and credentials up against yours anyway of the week.  It really frustrated me with people who seem to know what responsibilities players have, it's a team game and th way our defense is constructed we need our dline to do a better job of keeping our Lbs clean.  That didnt happen yesterday.  With all the Jet sweeps, wham blocks, and stretch plays, our dline played horrible.

Check out what Logic posted from Cover1, and go learn something.  Otherwise, PM me and I'll meet you sometime to watch a game. Like I said, would be fun to chat live and point out what you should be looking at

I'll also point out, that everyone should go back and watch some replays, if you're available to.

You'll notice double digit run attempts that the Pats motioning WR or TE "crack" down on the outside defender and leave Wallace to make a 1-1 tackle outside...which I admit that Wallace has shown promise in coverage, but he really needs to improve his tackling.   And the jet sweeps...ive never seen a defense so incapable of stopping this.  The Bills defensive ends and OlBs did not adjust to this at all.

Like many have said, not having Milano really hurt.  I think we can appreciate him a little more after this poor effort.  The Bills lack of depth at LB really hurts.  When you have to start a rookie UDFA and an aging (who is best suited as a sub package player, not fulltime, in Zo) this is the outcome.

Again, go ahead and say the unit played horribly...dont single out a player, 1 of 11.  These are the moments that we wish that we could fast forward 1-2 years and say "I told you so"...but don't worry I'll be here waiting and ready to bring this back up

The game against the Chargers was arguably the most abused a MLB has ever been in a game for the Bills.

So yeah.......if you keep the bar low you can easily claim improvement since then.

    But where are the plays?

The question isn't whether he can get better at the "learnable",  experience aspects it's whether a lack of instincts for the position can be overcome.

We talked about Manny Lawson upthread.............that's the thing that always kept him yo-yo'ing in and out of lineups..........just consistently being unable to make plays he seemingly should due to reactions compromised by a lack of instincts.

Shazier is an interesting comparison but you ruined your take with the "...if he did(outplay Edmunds) then Stanford would be the starter" nonsense.

Matt Barkley outplayed Josh Allen........that Jets game was the best QB'd and best game for the Bills this season..........but he didn't remain the starter when Allen was healthy because the team was developing their first round pick.      Same with Edmunds.

Clearly Buffalo is developing their rookies.  But if the coaches thought Edmunds was "outplayed by Stanford" throughout the year, don't you think they would have eased him in...ie: various sub packages?

You are obviously biased against Edmunds.  All I'm suggesting is wait for these "don't be surprised if he's at OLB next year" hot takes.

And worst player on the field.....jeesh.  Do you know what gap responsibilities each player had, on every single play? How about our offensive line play? what about our stellar team tackling? Punter, he played better than Edmunds too, right?

C'mon, you either have an agenda against the kid, were in love with another MLB in the draft, or just dillusional to single him out like that.

Check back with me next offseason, we'll see which position he's at and how he's progressed.

He got a pretty bad concussion trying to tackle a fullback head up and missed a game and since then he's appeared to be much more contact shy.

Julian Stanford outplayed him in his absence.

Julian Stanford didn't outlay him...if he did, then Stanford would be the starter.  Not that it matters anyhow...

Regarding Edmunds this season, he reminds me alot of Ryan Shaziers rookie season.  Ryan was not physical and always seemed 1 steo behind....fast forward a couple years and he was one of the best in the league.

Give the guy some time to develop with another NFL offseason

Need to hear more on Orton.  Fear he might need to eat crow.  Career ending possibly.

Seriously, over react much?  It's one thing to say you fear he suffered a serious injury, but to then add the career ending?  Why/what's the point of saying that?  I'm just glad McKenzie is healthy, but calling this out as a future lesson...pls dont be so over dramatic. Not everyone has a chance to watch the game, and they come to this board for updates, not hot takes.

Yeah bro he is one of a few solid free agent options

What are your (you and Ryan) expectations of James, if we sign him?

I live in the thick of Steeler country, have friends that know him from his days at South Allegheny high school, and watch them play every Sunday.  Not to disappoint. but if you're looking for a true #1 TE it's not James.  He's a complimentary player in a great offense, who has been phased out since the end of last season for the likes of Vance McDonald.

Again, depends what the team is looking for from their TEs, but knowing Dabolls background, I think they look for a better option

Matt Smiley is in his 2nd season in Buffalo working as the team’s assistant special teams coach. In his first season in Buffalo, the Bills ranked 7th in the NFL in special teams according to the annual rankings compiled by esteemed NFL writer Rick Gosselin. Smiley had served in the United States Air Force as a maintenance officer in Grand Forks, ND.

    Coaching highlights:

    2017: (Bills)

    • The Bills special teams ranked 7th in the NFL according to the annual rankings compiled by esteemed NFL writer Rick Gosselin in 2017. Along the way, kicker Stephen Hauschka extended his streak of 50+ yard field goals to 13, which set an NFL record.

    2013-16: (Jaguars)

    • Assisted a Jaguars special teams unit that finished the 2016 season tied for seventh in kick returns (23.8 avg. yards) and 10th in net punt yards (46.6 avg.).

    • In 2013, kicker Josh Scobee produced one of the best statistical seasons of his 10-year NFL career, leading the team with 91 points and connecting on 23 of 25 field goals (92.0).

    2009-11: (Eastern Illinois)

    • Kicker Austin Signor earned first-team All-OVC honors in 2009 after leading the nation in touchbacks on kickoffs and ranked 30th nationally field goals.

    • Punter Kevin Cook ranked ninth in the nation in punting average in the 2010 season.

    2008-09: (Eureka)

    • Smiley served one season as the offensive coordinator and one season as the defensive coordinator at Eureka College. He was named interim head coach in October 2008.

    College:

    • Smiley graduated from Illinois in 2001.

    Personal:

    • Served in the United States Air Force as a maintenance officer in Grand Forks, ND upon graduation. While on active duty, Smiley was deployed four times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and received the USAF Commendation Medal for his efforts.

    • While stationed in Grand Forks he also worked with the specialists at the University of North Dakota where he coached two All-American kickers in 2001 and 2003.

    • Smiley also holds a master’s degree from North Dakota. He and his wife Marissa have three daughters: Madelyn, Ella and Ava; and one son, Caleb

Thanks, why not give him a shot for 3 games?  Not sure how much will be learned, but if you have a lame duck coach and out of the playoff race, then it can't hurt

Beyond the physical altercation, the manner in which the hotel staff on hand and police on scene handled the situation is truly sad.

On top of that, the NFL seemed to do very little to pursue additional details about that evening, UNTIL TMZ released the video...again disturbing.

I'm a diehard nfl fan, but situations like these are what the 'skeptical' public eye hold onto to paint a bleak image about the league and its athletes.

At this point, Hunt would have been better off if the NFL did their due diligence from day 1.  Usually, more harsh consequences result from an organization in 'damage control' mode.  Suspension might be less than a season, but strongly believe that all teams will be encouraged to stay clear unless they are "100% certain" that he will stay out of trouble...cant see a team willing to take that risk and public beatdown.

I agree with the poster above, I don't see Hunt coming back from this.

Actually two of our rookies are starters - Josh and Tremaine - the closest to a 3rd starter is Taron Johnson. Johnson has played more snaps that Harrison Phillips. We have been in nickel a lot. The only players on defense with more snaps than Johnson are Edmunds, Milano, Hyde, Poyer, White and Kyle.

My view that Taron has been our best rookie isn't intended as a criticism of anyone else. It is simply what the tape shows. Taron Johnson has had an outstanding rookie season. Up until the last two games when the shoulder has clearly bothered him I'd argue he was one of the top 4 performers on the whole roster (Tre White, Lorax, Hughes and Johnson). I don't know why people are so angry with me for saying this. Our GM found someone who is already among the top players at his position in the league in the 4th round. That is good, surely?

I think Josh has been good, I think Harrison has been good and while I think Edmunds has struggled there are enough wow plays that show his athleticism to be pretty excited about his potential longer term. Apparently people here would be happier if our 4th round rookie had played less well so that we could say Josh Allen has been our best rookie. It is a bizarre attitude to me. I know one is a nickel and one is a Quarterback.... but come on guys.

    Does Teller not count?

This team is a disaster. Cut your starting CB (who is garbage) and replace him with an undrafted rookie who was a walk on at college.

Considering he was brought in as the #4 corner, on a cheap deal, not sure why this qualifies as disaster talk.

You can't put the Davis retirement on the front office, they saw a 1yr stopgap that could provide veteran leadership....obviously Davis screwed that up

Writing in caps is just childish.  They want to compete short and long term.  The moves they made are not contradictory.  To compete long term they knew they needed a young franchise-like QB and a leader for their D.  They made moves to get them in this draft.  They knew they wanted to take their cap hit completely and get it over with.  They did that.

You keep harping on Kerley and Holmes as if those are definitive proof of something.  Kerley I suspect will bounce on and off the roster for the year.  Holmes is not as good or bad as any other #4 receiver and is a guy they count on for special teams.

Quit acting like a child, read what other people offer, and answer them instead of just writing the same rants (and in capitals no less as if that means anything).

Trust me, this guy is not worth your time.  He's blind with rage, and for some reason thinks the Kerley release is a signal that Beane has no clue.

FWIW, I agree with you completely.   Logic and patience is lost on the angry and out of touch

From what I’ve gathered, my opinion is -

Watkins was entitled, selfish and a loner in buffalo (some of that by his own admission) and has caused some issues in the locker room. I believe they also knew he would price himself out of buffalo. So they took a 2nd round pick for him.

Darby was struggling with zone coverage concepts and didn’t really fit the scheme. He’s a man cover CB. He was also said to not be buying in and supposedly disliked McDermott.

Dareus was lazy, late to meetings and was one more failed test away from a 1yr suspension. He caused issues for the Bills for years and this new regime was having none of it. He was also said not to be buying in.

You cant put Gilmore on this new regime. Whaley had 2 years to get him signed and didn’t. He drew a hard line in the sand as to what he would pay (reported to be around $11.5M) and Gilmore was unwilling to accept it.

Gilmore also wanted to go to a team where he would get to play on prime time TV. Why would the Bills shell out $14M + (likely would have had to beat NE’s $13.5M per) for a guy who didn’t truly want to be here?

Glenn was traded in order for Buffalo to be able to land their QB -something you and everyone else said was a huge priority for years.

He was also traded in order to let his younger replacement develop.

You can not assume that Glenn or Dawkins can play the right side. Marrone tried Glenn on the right and he struggled badly. McD tried Dawkins at RT (he may have tried Glenn there too iirc) and he struggled big time. He was outplayed at RT by Jordan Mills...

Asking a linemen to play the opposite side is tough. I once heard an o linemen say “it’s like wiping with the opposite hand” (lol). You need to be able to do everything backwards.

You also have to factor in Glenn’s injury and time missed. Dawkins did very well in his place.

Maybe they should have given Glenn or Dawkins more time at RT. But I’m not sure how they go up and get Josh Allen without trading Glenn. We definitely wouldn’t have Edmunds, and maybe we wouldn’t have our 1st this year (which would be a disaster...).

Robert Woods didn’t seem to want to re-sign in Buffalo. It was reported long before McDermott was hired thathe Bills were not even negotiating with him. He wanted to go home to California, and did just that. I would have loved for Woods to stay.

Brown didnt really fit the scheme. McD needs his MLB to be able to play sideline to sideline with speed and cover the pass. They drafted his replacement and are letting him develop on the field.

That’s my opinion on how I see those moves, anyway...

And Just to be clear, I am not trying to say that I agree with every move they’ve made. Far from it. I worry that they put too much emphasis on character and not enough on talent. But I can see the plan. Only time will tell if it works out.

    Excellent post!

I can also see the plan that Beane/McDermott are deploying, and it should also be clear to every fan as they've been transparent with their thought of building a long term winner. But it takes time.

Like it or not, Patience is key.  Jury is still out if this overhaul will work, but i have faith.  Past mismanagement of the team and what Beane/McDermott inherited all need to be taken into consideration
