When you consider we've recently landed Taron Johnson and Matt Milano in rounds 4 and 5, it wouldn't be the end of the world to have missed on Phillips. I don't think he's gonna cut it. As you stated, he doesn't appear to be strong enough as a 1t nor quick enough as a 3t.

I don't really care if it's an interior or edge player, but we need to land a pass rusher this offseason.

I really like the kid Ferrell from Clemson and with so many top tier defensive lineman in this draft, could easily see him falling to 9 and being the pick.

Definitely agree, we need a top tier pass rusher to pair with Jerry.  Just like last year was the time to get our QB, this year is our time to land a franchise defensive end.

Hopefully we won't be picking top 10 again for a long time.  Foundation of this team would have the potential to have young blue chip players at each level of the defense (New def end, Edmunds/Milano, and Tre).

On the other hand, I won't be upset if we spend the premium pick on an offensive lineman.  One could certainly make the case that Oline is the bigger need...hopefully we can find 1-2 solid players in FA

His contract? The Bills have over $90 million in cap space. His contract isn't an issue. Again, he had a significant foot injury that required surgery.  He played in 13 games this year following the surgery last year.

Glenn and Dawkins as your tackles> unknown 2nd round pick.

I was a big Glenn fan myself, but he has had some misfortuane with injuries.

Speaking of Dawkins at right tackle, that will be a curious possibility. I seem to recall that he initially struggled there, when Buffalo opened OTAs and camp in his rookie year.  But with a new offensive approach and new line coach, it's something thatbim sure they will consider.

This team desperately needs offense, and Lawson is an average-to-above-average NFL player at this point. If you want to compare, I'd say he's probably comparable to Robert Woods with regard to how fans viewed him going into his year 4 season. They shouldn't be drafting for a replacement when they already have a decent player there and when the extension isn't that expensive given their cap situation. I'm not opposed to drafting DE if the guy is elite, mind you, but they simply have to fix the desperate offensive talent situation. They'll never go better than 9-7 without truly committing to a serious upgrade on that side of the ball.

I completely agree that the offense needs a lot of focus this off season.

Just because we have the money available in 2020 to give Shaq, doesn't mean we should automatically pick up the 5th year option.  You have to balance if his value meets the contract and how it impacts other positional targets, just like you said.

I think we need a better pass rush.  Jerry is not getting any younger, either is Zo and he's not even under contract yet, Kyle just retired, and Murphy hasn't shown that he can stay healthy or provide a consistent pass rush either.

Top 10 pick in a class with supposed top end talent, it might be the right time to retool the position.  And save the 5th year option on Shaq, unless the front office thinks he's proven enough or on the correct projectory.  You don't typically hand out the 5th year option for run setting defensive ends, but who knows, we shall see.

I might be the only one who was confused by Sal's tweet, but to clarify:

    1. Shaq is under contract for the 2019 season (unless we trade or release him - unlikely)

    2. 5th year option would be for the 2020 season.  Even if Buffalo does not pick up the option, we'd still have the ability to sign as a free agent prior to the 2020 season

At this point, I don't think Shaq has done enough to lock him up for 2020.  Shaq seems like a great teammate and showed signs of improving this year, but his lack of consistent pass rush and slow burst off the ball is still a concern for me.

This is a very good defensive end draft...if Beane stays true to his word (bpa), if expect that we find a DE in round 1 or 2

Yeah, Tomlin's very hands off which lends itself well to having lockerroom leaders on a talented team steer the ship. Troy was a fantastic lead by example type.

Seems this team is devoid of any of that. And Big Ben's influence has gotten out of control where Tomlin should have curtailed it long ago.

By this point seems like Tomlin's in a tough position now with his Quarterback not helping out in the role Troy and Hines did. The writing on the wall for me was the Raiders game. Ben seems perfectly healthy and fine to play.. Tomlin's told Ben can't go and his mind has to be on coaching the rest of the team to get the win. All the while he and Ben don't say a word to each other until Ben comes back in mid 4th quarter when they are about to lose to the friggin raiders.

Sets a terrible example to the team. In Brown's mind I can see where what Brown did is no more egregious to Ben skipping out IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME. Crazy sequence of events. That Raiders game put a stink bomb in the lockerroom for sure nobody could put out. At some point I don't even know how Tomlin 's even supposed to handle that.

Brady and Belicheck have their issues but Brady's at least just as manaically devoted to winning as Beli.

    Can't agree more, excellent points.

And yes, it's very difficult to change your mindset and handling of players 10+ years into the job.  Tomlin is definitely in a pickle, as he will be going outside his normal coaching traits to correct this situation.

Now this will get everyone fired up, lol...but this is exactly why I appreciate and think coach McDermott will succeed with his style of coaching/personnel decisions.

I humbly submit Ryan Silverfield  Asst. HC/Run Game Coordinator/O-Line Coach of Memphis.  Previous NFL experience with Detroit and Minnesota before that.  Memphis' offense has been excellent the last couple years and they can run the crap out of the ball.

I like it...just my opinion, but I'm all for providing new opportunities as opposed to retreads who were fired elsewhere.

Your option sounds like a good one

  7. Hopefully this doesn't get buried here, but relevant to the topic...

    Any scoop on possible replacements?

    1. I typically scour the NFL assistant oline coaches, Steelers have a young dude, likely no.  I'd suggest maybe Dallas, Chicago, Kansas City, or Seattle

    2. college ranks...maybe Daboll has a few connections from his time at Bama / networking at the collegiate level

Imagine your OL throwing shade at you when you consider coming back for the end of the year. Makes your decision pretty easy if you're Bell.

And Big Ben's the kind of guy to make a media story over not being texted back.. after the dude is no longer a teammate. I don't know what's in the water in Pittsburgh but with better leadership from Ben they could have AB, Bell, and a healthier Connor in the playoffs right now. Instead they minimized AB and Bell's impact on the team cause it's all about Ben. He made AB have HOF #s apparently. He's probably ruined his small remaining career window to win another one if he loses AB. Make your talented high maintenance players happy, that's part of your job Ben. He's the common denominator IMO.

I agree that Ben has been known for being a controversial teammate.

From living in the Burgh all my life, here is my opinion:

    1. Steelers no longer have locker room leaders to "self control" the team, more on this below.  It used to be Hines, Troy, Farrior, etc etc that were the superstars, but also led that team...sorta like a Kyle Williams type attitude, which can't be appreciated enough

    2. Without the locker room controlling itself, it becomes more important for the Head coach to manage these situations.  For Tomlin, early in his coaching tenure he could rely on aforementioned leaders above.

I place the blame on Tomlin, but i know that topic has varying opinions.  He needs to prove that he can manage superstar players without the help of others doing his job.  It will be interesting to see how he approaches the situation and if he can get this team playing as a unit.  Much of the post season player interviews focused on "team chemistry" , and AB and Ben are both part of that problem, it is up to Tomlin to fix that situation.

Not the same, but a possible comparison is the Bulls/Lakers teams of the past, where Phil Jackson was the perfect guy for those situations.

I think Tomlin has 1 more season to right the ship and return the Steelers to a superbowl

"You have issues" ? really scathing retort from an internet stranger on a Bills forum.

I don't see much problem with Brown. We blow these alleged "me-first" personalities way out proportion. If you have performed so well for so long as Brown has, something tells me winning football games and giving his best effort for his team is pretty high on his list. The personality issues of one player shouldn't ruin a lockerroom for any coach worth his salt of leading grown men to play football.

I think if he's demanding a trade it's a 50/50. To your point Steelers would be much worse off if they firesale Brown and lose Bell in the same season. They'd likely lose the last of their small window with Big Ben still playing.

    Lol.

    good points, I agree

Geezus dude, you have some issues man.

    1. Who really cares in the first place
    2. I did NOT say he will get traded, just scoffed at the suggestion its impossible.
    3. I already provided justification
    4. Being absolute on anything that hasn't happened is both a waste of time and stupid and the road of absolute declarations is riddled with the tears of failed predictions

Good luck with all that "I will bet you" bravado over things no one cares about.  Hope that finds you some sense of happiness in the new year.

You can portray me however you like, bottom line is that you called my post out for being foolish...its not uncivil or even outrageous to say to a fellow dude, "well lets wager and see who is right?" Confidence, absolute, etc...pick whatever word you want, but maybe you havent interacted with guy friends like this...

Sorry that you have taken my responses so seriously and felt the need to judge my character or happiness with message board posts.

Happy New Year to you also!

Dude, what’s with this whole mick you are where you want to bet everyone on this nonsense.  He may not get traded, where did I day he for sure will?  You’re the only one talking in absolutes.

And people said Raiders absolutely won’t trade Mack.  People said absolutely Steelers wouldn’t lose Bell.  People said Allen will absolutely be a bust.  People said we absolutely took the wrong Josh.  People told me I was nuts when I said Mayfield was best QB in draft all college football season and then they told me Mayfield absolutely wouldnt be drafted in the first round.

Being absolute about things that haven’t happened yet is foolish.  And Steelers history suggests Iran possible they might trade him.  Doesn’t mean they will, but this “bet me” bravado over something this insignificant is a waste of energy.  Good for you that you can see the future, hopefully you put that skill to better use like the lottery than wasting it on ABs and the Steelers future.

    Maybe because I'm extremely confident....

and think your justication is completely worthless.

Let's recap, you think AB is possibly traded and I don't.  I'm suggesting a friendly wager, because I'm extremely confident, if you don't want to wager so be it...but I'm allowed to be confident and provided plenty of justification....

Not crap, that is completely unrelated like yourself.  Bell, Mack (not even the Steelers), or past situations with Steeler WRs are NOT reasons to justify your case....or any other situation where people didn't think it would happen then it did.

How about you provide some direct justification of your opinion...dont let my confidence get in your way

I can't speak to the sources and information of your grapevine, but let's just say I'd stop regarding it as a source of straight gouge.

The bottom line is that the Steelers have amortized $21.1M of AB's signing bonus into 2019, 2020, and 2021.  Designating him an after-June-1 cut would shift when they have to pay it, but they'd still have to pay it, plus, they would have to pay him an extra $2.5M roster bonus this year.

    https://overthecap.com/player/antonio-brown/1579/

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/antonio-brown-6702/

Note: Overthecap does not show the impact of post-June1 trades and cuts correctly at this point; it doesn't give the team the option to split it as originally designated.

Thanks! These are the exact details that I found...based on his March 2018 contract restructure, meant to provide enough cap space to fit Bell under the franchise tag...funny how that backfired

  13. 1 minute ago, Alphadawg7 said:

Why do you say this?  Steelers have repeatedly let their #1 WR go in their prime because they always have guys coming up.

I mean everyone said they would cave and not lose Bell.  They didn’t budge.  It’s absolutely possible they will trade AB.  Doesn’t mean it happens, but to say there is no chance is foolish based on their history of handling the WR situation and player issues.

It's not a foolish comment.  Please go back and review the points that I laid out.  Most importantly, the cap situation...

Pittsburgh does move on from players at the right time, you are correct about that.  But you're completely off base thinking this is the right time.  When they moved on from santanio, Wallace, and sanders...none of these guys were:

    1. arguably the best WR in the NFL OR

    2. had a contract structured in a detrimental fashion to the Steelers to trade them

    LB situation was completely different...

PM me if you want to back up your opinion

I heard it through the grapevine he'd only count for 7 million against the cap if they trade him after June 1st.  The Bills have no shot in hell, but he still could realistically be traded.  I'm sure the Steelers and him will make amends though.

    That's not true...

the information that Andrew Brandt tweeted.is accurate.

Steelers previously restructured ABs contract, and 2019 will be difficult to move him off the roster

  15. Just now, 3rdand12 said:

    AB asked for a trade.
and he was called out by Ryan Clark.

     "time to go "

will anyone pick up that Contract? thats the question

Again, I'll be willing to wager anyone and everyone that Pittsburgh doesn't trade him.

AB said the same thing early in the season...few additional reasons to support my comment:

    1. ABs contract is not structured in a team friendly trade or release scenario in 2019

    2. Steelers understand that they have a short window to compete for super bowl, until Ben retires...and trading arguably the best WR in the NFL...hmmm

    3. as talented as Juju is, he's not ready to be the #1 yet.  Steelers know when to move on from players, and JuJus time will come

    4. Trading Brown will be another knock to an organization, that will make them look like they can't manage talented/diva players.  This situation is way different than Lbs, but in 2 years time, they aren't going to strip that much talent from a Super bowl contender

    I can go on...

The coaches who’ve been fired so far, or certainly will be tomorrow—Bowles, Koetter, and Joseph—all should have been fired last year, but were kept around in the interest of continuity.  As a result, those franchises wasted a year finding out what was already obvious to any sentient observer—that those guys were not good coaches.  Put the Browns in this category, too.  If they had fired Hue Jackson at the end of last season, as he so richly deserved, they probably would be preparing for a playoff game right now.

It seems clear that McDermott is going to survive Black Monday, but should he?  By giving him another season, are we wasting a year of Josh Allen’s cheap rookie contract?  Are we stunting his development by making him play for a coach who turtles any time he finds himself with a 14-point lead?

Posts like this make me seriously wonder what you're watching....education must be at an all time low.

Is he the offensive genius that some teams have? Of course not...but he is a defensive genius.  look at what he's been able to accomplish with a unit, that only 2 years ago failed miserably for rex, where rex arguably had more talent to work with.

Not sure what else you could honestly ask for i  his first 2 seasons with this roster...unless you just don't like him or simply want to complain about everything

Actually all these reports saying Bills picking 9th or 10th are correct because the ones saying 10th are based on all game results before IND/TEN game is concluded while the ones saying 9th is based on the assumption that IND/TEN doesn't end in a tie. At this moment (before IND/TEN game is ended), Bills' pick is 10th based on Bills having higher strength of schedule than Broncos. Currently Broncos' SOS is 133W/121L=0.5236 while Bills' SOS is 132W/120L=0.5238.

However, as long as IND/TEN game doesn't end in a tie, Bills' SOS then becomes 133W/121L, which is the same as Broncos. In this case, we go to the next tiebreakers and Bills in the end would get 9th pick due to worse strength of victory.

In other words, as long as IND/TEN game isn't a tie, Bills should get 9th pick.

bumping...this is the best post describing the outcome, for anyone still confused
