Has been an ongoing thing since the AB trade,

today they mentioned the NFL draft being a month away and how exciting it is for fans and how it starts the new league year,

”a time for everyone to have hope before the start of a new season, unless you’re the buffalo bills..”

Ever since that AB trade they continue to bash the city / team.

Colin Dunlap and Ron Cook. Pittsburgh likes to ***** all over buffalo ALL the time

Very few good sports media guys in Pittsbufgh, great city though!  Fans are a mix of obnoxious (Steelers), jaded (Pirates), and spoiled (Pens).

And agree, there are a TON of Bills fans in the Burgh.  Every time I wear my gear in the Strip or around town, someone is giving a shout out to Buffalo.  Not sure if it's Buffalo residents moving to Pittsburgh, or just a natural following...

I grew up in the outskirts of Pitt, close to where Jimbo played in high school, black and gold country, but alot of ppl jumped on the wagon following Jim to the pros.

Good interview. I'm kind of surprised that Beane doesn't just come out and say that the only reason AB is going off on Buffalo is because we wouldn't pay him. He goes right to the edge and lets the listener connect the dots, except no one in mainstream media appears to have connected the dots. Maybe Beane just doesn't want a circus.

Also, yes the decision making was a problem but the accuracy was a problem too. It's funny the team continues to push back on that. You'd think they'd want to address the issue head on rather than pretend it doesn't exist. Maybe they are privately.

Columnist in local Pittsburgh paper didn't miss it...

  3. To me, there are 3 'area's that could use an immediate upgrade:

    1. pass rush

    2. receiving presence to occupy lbs and safeties

    3. offensive line/blocking

    1. Either a DT or defensive end, but I'm guessing defensive end as our 1st pick.  Our defense legitamatly becomes a force with 1 superb pass rusher

    2. A high quality receiving tight end can open up so many possibilities. Extremely challenging to stop an offense with an athletic tight end in the middle of the field, and explosive Wrs to cover deep

    3.  I like our offensive line additions, but we could really use another dominating player to go with Morse.  Our FA additions have provided flexibility to wait until day 2, but I'm not quite sold on this group as it stands now.  Ty has never been tasked with a starter role, Waddle is a solid backup, and Long/Feliciano are borderline starters too, albeit upgrades over last year.

Its on both. He should never have been on the roster. We should not have gone into the season with AJM, Peterman, Allen. Or Taylor, Yates, Peterman the year before.

And Beane was a man about it....owned the mistake and apologized.  I'll take that attitude 100/100 times, nobody is perfect.

Not going to indulge beyond that.  if that is still stuck in your craw, I'd suggest washing it down with a cold one and keeping your eyes ahead, this season is going to be exciting!

Yeah it's not a good fit for us one bit. But I'll be very interested in his career going forward. I think he'll be just fine and have playoff success on good teams.

He also might always hold a team back from going all the way for many reasons but I think he makes many of the better landing spots for him a contender.

Don't know if it's a possibility, but the Rams are the type to take this gamble.. maybe they shed a Suh and Cooks contract or something and got him. They've been more than willing on mortgaging the future in picks and contracts for troubled talent, plus he'd be getting a quarterback getting better in his 4th year and providing his best offense yet. His best landing spot IMO.

Good call, I could totally see the Rams making that sort of move...and talk about the rich getting richer.

At his production, the only other undersized WR in his league is Steve Smith Sr. I think at a certain level of production, your work ethic and whatever drive you've had that's given you success so far has already given you the prerequisite to last as long as you're willing to maintain that intangible. SSS had injuries but rehabbed like he was playing for his first contract trying to break into the league coming from an ACL tear at like 36 with absolutely nothing to prove.

Antonio Brown is a lot of things, but maniacally hard worker and competitor is the best thing he has going for him. I absolutely see him having longevity.

Side note I love how everybody's writing AB off as untouchable to franchises yet are terrified he finds his way to NE. I shudder at that myself. As much as I hate that organization I think the thing I more respect is they have a culture that supercedes any one players' perceived threat to winning. They've consistently shown the balls be willing to shape up poisonous talent rather than being too scared of the player. Something i'd like to see the culture here become: our team doesn't get ruined by seeking players that fit our mold. Our culture molds competitors for the common goal of winning.

At some point players with a certain level of success have a psyochopathic competitive nature. That's a fine culture to put at the foremost to supercede any other issues that come up. I draw the line at dirt bags.  Hernandez, Ray Rice.. Kareem Hunt (before he's given a grace period), but outside criminal harm to others.. couldn't care less about having a few nutbags. As long as they know they're on the team to contribute to wins.

Primadonna WRs ain't no thang. TO,  Randy Moss: they can be motivated to be the biggest factor to carry a team to.. lose SB's ( go Giants!)

Agree that AB will probably still be playing 5 years from now, and likely at a high level still.

But biggest difference compared to a TO or Moss situation, is that Brown would be eating up MAJOR cap space and will require high draft capital to obtain.  TO or Moss didn't when they were shipped around.

If someone trades for him, they better have the cap and coaching/locker room to handle him.  That's a big combo and a big risk, given a team will have to part ways with major draft capital

His 2014 season was defensive MVPish. The guy was a force that year.

He was solid in 2012. Very good in 2013. And among the best defensive players in the game in 2014. Enter Rex and he fell off a cliff.  Still worth the contract even with that marginal to bad 2015 season.

I think most would be lying if they say they didn't want Mario to sign with us several years ago.

And yes, he had several really good to great seasons.  Rex coming in didn't help his career, that s for sure.  But he might have been on the decline anyhow, and battling through injuries.

The unfortunate part, is that we shelled out a MASSIVE signing bonus and guaranteed money to get him...which then was amortized several seasons out and backloaded his contract.  So by the time he was on the decline, we were stuck with so much dead cap.

Smart, rationale contracts and proper cap management are things that I think Beane will do, and has already implemented.  So yeah, we might make a big signing, but i don't think we'll backload contracts as heavy as prior regimes

  8. Improving our record, making the playoffs, or closing the gap on contending teams, all hinges on Allen and his progress.  I think that's a simple fact that most of us can agree on.

Putting talent around him is step 1.  Beane and McDermott already have a nice core on defense.  We have the money and draft capital to pull off a similar transition to what the Bears just did....minus the Mack trade perhaps.

From there, we can all just hope that Allen takes a big step forward in 2019 and continue his late year progression.

I don't think anyone is resting on mediocrity.  I for one am just being realistic that Allen might take a little more time to progress, given he had quite a few tendencies to correct and was very raw coming into the league.  Kid works hard, he'll eventually get there, and we shouldn't be ready to jump ship after his 2nd year...thats what some of us are saying

What in the actual f*ck are you talking about?

Donahoe tore it down.........Jauron and Levy tore it down hard AGAIN..........Buddy and Chan specifically tried to do a 180 from what Jauron did a miserable job of doing.........so yet another re-build.............you are oblivious if you think we haven't seen numerous tear downs and their result in the past 17 years.

You must have missed teef and Scott discussing this, or it would make sense

Mahomes wouldn't have to had become the best player in the NFL to justify having selected him over trading that pick.

It was time to select a QB..........but for some reason McD and the Pegulas were dickin' around with this little game of holding up Whaley and his scouts at the expense of not officially hiring Beane outright to be GM when they inked McDermott.

In honor of Doug Whaley we can call that period "GM purgatory"............a bizarre and highly unusual period without the future GM in place that left McD non-committal  about such a big decision as the QB of the future.

And as it turns out.........that opportunity to select Mahomes might have been the best opportunity to improve their fortunes that the franchise has had in decades....................so it was a real bad time to be inexcusably unprepared.

I really like Josh Allen...........hopefully he becomes great and the Bills organization builds a great roster around him and coach that roster up.

    Good post!

I agree about Allen, I think he has the upside to be very successful.

Nobody will ever know what Mahomes would be doing if on another team, Bills or anyone else.  We can debate it, but it's all about what this team does with current players and future opportunities

What happens with Watkins or Ragnuts is insignificant in a universe where your team traded away the chance to select the NFL MVP.

No doubt Mahomes is a great Qb, perhaps the best in the NFL already.  But it's easy look in the rearview mirror and say woulda coulda shoulda.

Kudos to you if you thought Mahomes was going to turn out like this! If so, id like to know who you think are the premier guys in this upcoming draft

Really?  Someday you will figure it out.  Shaq was dominant at the College level.  You just made the counter point against the whole College team could beat NFL team and you dont even realise it.

Shaq at the level he played at this season would dominate a college Olineman.  Now after they have had an NFL offseason or two then you have something.

Bruce Smith got a whole 6.5  sacks his Rookie season.

That stat is to show the transition to the NFL for College players not any kind of Buce Shaq comparison.

I was only kidding about a college team beating an Nfl team...

regarding Shaq, id still take the current Clemson defensive ends over him.  An NFL off-season or two has never fixed Shaqs lack of quickness or pass rush skills.  Edge setting, Shaq perhaps would be the run down man....3rd downs tho (money down), i would prefer those Clemson guys

  13. Adding a top tier defensive end (draft) and Malik at the 3 technique would be a very nice start to rebuilding the d line.

Malik's biggest issue is effort and staying in good shape.  Jacksonville's entire team disappointed this year, so a new start might do the trick.

We definitely need a penetrating/pass rushing 3 technique.  Harrison is more of a 'tweener', Star is Star, and hopefully Phillips is back.  But we need to fill some talent gaps in free agency and Malik is certainly plenty talented

Yeah he still very much could definitely remain a Steeler.  Steelers can reduce the dead cap hit by $14m if they trade him after June 1st.  But he will likely fetch even less if he does because teams will have already gone FA and Draft so the market will be even smaller.

But if he does get traded before the draft, I dont think he is gonna fetch what people think.  I think the Steelers would take a 2nd and another pick or player.  AB has a big contract, is 30, and obviously has a rep problem which creates a discount right now too.

Not a lot of teams will have the ability or luxury to trade for him, so I think there will be less suitors for him than people think.  That gives the negotiation edge to the other team or teams interested.

He could also still fetch at least a first, I mean his talent is worth it, will just come down to how bad someone wants him and if they feel he helps them contend. But this is also a very deep WR draft, so I don’t know teams are gonna pay top value for him.

I have a feeling he can be had for a 2nd and a player/pick.  Gonna be interesting to watch it all playout.  If I’m the Steelers I would prefer to keep AB and replace Tomlin instead personally who I think is over rated.

Can't agree more with your last sentence.  Hard to think the Steelers were at home watching week 1 of the playoffs with all their talent

Step 1:  Bills trade down in the first and pick up an extra 2nd.

Step 2:  Draft TE Fant in the First after the trade down.

Step 3:  Trade Bills 2nd round pick, and our 3rd for Antonio Brown (or even Julio).

Step 4:  Use our 2nd round pick on BPA, likely OL, RB, WR, CB.

Essentially, our overall cost for Antonio is essentially just our 3rd and a small trade down in the 2nd (given we would still have a 2nd rounder from our first round trade down).  And honestly, if in this scenario the Steelers insisted on both 2nd's (ours plus the one we picked up) then I would do it as well as again, net cost of AB would really just be our current 2nd round pick.

We likely would have also signed at least one FA WR to go along with recent signing of Williams (which I liked).

    Enter Camp with:

    QB - Allen

    TE - Fant

    WR1 - Brown (or Julio)

    WR2 - Foster

WR3 - FA (like Humphries) we sign or Zay/Williams

    WR4 - Zay/Williams

WR5 and WR6 - McKenzie and some other young guy.

And quite honestly, Williams feels like a strong wild card who could potentially contend for WR2 and Foster could be a WR3 slot weapon.  Now you got speed on the outside in Brown with a guy with a big catch radius in Williams and Foster torching people from the slot.  But before anything, we need to see Williams show some of that potential on an NFL field where he is starting from a stand still position each snap.

I am still taking the stance that AB remains in Pittsburgh, but would like to think it would probably take more than a 2nd and a 3rd or even 2 2nds to land him.  You think that's all it would take?

Wait!? What!?  Now Steelers are open to trading him?  How could this be? @dabills21 told me it’s impossible and he will bet anyone who suggests it could happen.

I suggest dabills21 hit up the Steelers and make a big wager with them because apparently the Steelers aren’t internally aware that it’s impossible!  I mean you could make a bunch of money off the absolute impossibility that he could ever be traded!

Silly Steelers, so naive and ignorant to not even know it’s impososble for them to trade Brown.  Lucky us, we got prophets here at TSW who know the future better than we know our realities to keep us ahead of the curve on all things.

Obsess much?! Thought this forum wasn't supposed to call out people...maybe I'm mistaken.

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong (if he's dealt) but last I checked he's still a Pittsburgh Steeler...stay tuned and enjoy the long offseason
