361 yards and 7.7 yards per play, what exactly would you call that?

Yes you mentioned that already.  You have a case for the defense getting dominated.  Our offense did virtually the same thing to their defense.  Bass makes that kick and somehow the defense hangs on and everyone is saying we dominated them.  Our offense was straight up bullying them most of the game.

They could start with not letting him get wide open in the end zone for the easiest TD he's ever caught.

Bernard hurt and Klein starting did us no favors in that department.  It's a damn shame really.

They have the superstars. We don't. That's the biggest difference. They have Mahomes, Kelce, and Jones who consistently make the plays in the big moments. We only have Josh Allen. Diggs isn't that guy anymore, for some reason.

No doubt our outside WR's didn't do much against the Chiefs.  I see what you are saying but I don't totally agree.  Cook, Shakir, and Kincaid all made plays.  We needed Benford and Bernard on defense.  That's where we needed just a few more plays.

  4. ..... because if you have a fast 40 time you will be a great WR?  So many great receivers that have nothing to do with being picked in the first round or running a 4.2 40.  Everyone trying to Moneyball their way to a SB.  Ironically the GM in Moneyball is named Beane.

They are $40M over the cap.

Everybody knows that means nothing. If it was Beane's goal to go out and get a #1 receiver he'd make it happen.  I don't think it's happening but if it was he'd find a way.

  6. If Beane really wants a WR he'd sign a top tier free agent or trade for one.  None of our starting WR's (Diggs, Davis, or Shakir) were even drafted in the first 100 picks of a draft.  One out of the top 5 pass catchers in this years regular season was drafted in the top 50.  Three out of 4 were not even drafted in the top 100 picks.  We're probably just as likely to get production from a guy we draft in the 2nd or 3rd round as someone we might draft at 28.  I think with Shakir and Kincaid coming on last season Diggs might find his groove again.  We can draft a guy in the 2nd or 3rd and bring them along.  They can't be any worse then Sherfield and Harty.

Hollywood brown would give us a burner we lack and is coming off a down two years in AZ
Calvin Ridley - might be too expensive

Rasheed Shaheed broke out this year in a poor saints offense - could be a risk
DJ Chark - Perfect candidate for a placeholder if we draft a player and want them to earn the role over the course of the year in typical McD fashion.

What would you venture to guess on Brown's price tag?  Sportstrac thinks 15mil which seems pretty high.

Mooney would be my "poor man's Gabe" to have a rookie have to fight to take the snaps from him.

It's an interesting comparison in that they are very different.  The knock on Gabe is his top end speed route tree and Mooney is much faster both in and out of cuts and top end.  So hypothetically Mooney would be much better at taking the top off a defense.  Where I'm not sure about Mooney is the dirty work stuff like run blocking and overall physicallity.  Gabe also knew how to get open in the end zone.  Mooney and Shakir might be great together playing off of Diggs.  Still like everyone is saying I hope we are able to draft someone who's physically talented and skilled enough to fight for an outside WR spot.

  9. Cover 1 had a nice episode on this.  Josh and Diggs (for whatever reason) missed a lot going down the stretch and again in the playoffs.  If even half of their downfield misses were catches Diggs probably has 2 or 300 more yards in the regular season and a pretty good game against the Chiefs.  Diggs was also dropping short passes more than usual.  Every team after the Jags game played to take away the deep throws and keep everything short.  We developed the running game and Shakir and Kincaid emerged but then when you get the shots you have to connect and Allen and Diggs just were't connecting.

I share the opinion that I have seen in many places on this board: that WR #2 is a major weakness going into the offseason. I am also part of the group that believes that the Bills should spend draft resources to address the problem for one reason: WR #2 gets stupid money in free agency. Stupid money.

But there is always a case to be made for best pick available. Having something in the pipeline in case we roll box cars in the draft, or we take a guy with high upside but we want to ease in. So, here is a quick list at notable receivers that Spotrac has considered notable for the free agent class. I have exluded known slot receivers (We have Shakir and he's doing just fine)

For comparisons sake, let's start with a known quality. Gabe Davis. I believe that Gabe Davis was a very solid #3/4 option, but was badly inconsistent as a #2. According to Spotrac, he is expected to make an average of $13.6 M per year. That would be pricey for the Bills in 2024 and we would want an upgrade.

    So...here is the class

Most likely out of our price range

    Mike Evans

    OBJ

    Tyler Boyd

    Tee Higgins

    Michael Pittman Jr.

    Calvin Ridley

I put these out here not because I think they are fits, but because this is what the top end of the market will be getting. Now, if any one of those is not snapped up on Day 1 you absolutely make a call, but he is a more likely list of what will be waiting around on Day 2

    Curtis Samuel

    Nelson Aghalor

    Josh Reynolds

    Randall Cobb

    Darnell Mooney

So, any interest or are we all in on the draft?

Let Sherfield walk and sign Reynolds then draft a WR to play with Diggs.  Reynolds can do all the dirty work that Sherfield did and is 10x the pass catcher.  He's probably capable of Gabe Davis numbers in a pinch.  I'd still try to draft someone to be #2 but Reynolds would be a huge upgrade over Sherfield.

10m dead cap, or pay him $16m. So the question is he worth $6m? I think there is a 50% chance that will retain him and target a mid-2024 return.

If he's cut after 6/1 it spreads the cap hit out over 24 and 25 so we save 10 mil in 24.  I imagine it will depend largely on who we intend to bring back or sign.  I'd love to keep White around but given he's likely not the starter week one next season and possibly not even after he's fully recovered it's hard to justify 16 million for someone who has played 34 of the last 67 games.  Maybe there's a restructure that makes everyone happy.

From Sportstrac it says post 6/1

    2024 Dead Cap: $6,234,918

    2025 Dead Cap: $4,134,918

    2024 Cap Savings: $10,208,819

They can’t and shouldn’t keep White. Wouldn’t make any sense cap wise. Before Douglas White was a question mark to stay.

The dead cap isn’t an issue because you’re starters are already on the roster and accounted for. Any cap savings from White is a plus. Post June 1 cut saves $10 million.

Just saw the 4 year out.  Everything makes more sense now.

Teller also wasn’t a high draft pick. It was a numbers game with Teller. It’s also been a numbers game with Elam.

The Bills have difficult decisions to make at outside CB this offseason. I assume Benford and Douglas are the starters. I think the right move is to release or trade Tre White for cap reasons. Dane Jackson is the perfect 3rd CB. But he’s a UFA. Do you just let him walk and make Elam the 3rd CB? I think that’s what they do. Elam will be CB3 next year.

Another option is keep White and move Benford to safety. But I don’t think they will do that with how good Benford is developing at CB.

In today's passing league you need all the CB's you can afford.  If I remember right Douglas's contract is friendly next year as well.  Keep White next year while Douglas is still affordable.  Elam is still on a rookie contract also.  They'll all end up playing by the end of the season.  The next year when you have to start resigning people is when White becomes too expensive and aged out.  White has a dead cap hit of 10 mil in 24 and only 4 mil in 25.  I wouldn't be surprised if Benford and Douglas start in 24 and by 25 Elam and Benford are starting and Douglas is signing one year deals somewhere.  Maybe Douglas plays some safety.  He has the insticts for it and the money is there as Hyde and Poyer get older and possibly move on.
