  1. He's going to have to make the switch to H-Back or Running Back, if he gets drafted.   I think he ends up going a lot later than most people predict.  He was productive in college but really doesnt have a natural position in the the NFL.  Think about a player like Dorin Dickinson who ran a 4.4 flat but really didnt fit into an NFL offense because he wasn't a polished receiver or especially good at blocking.

  2. Starting to think there is a chance Baker Mayfield ends up the 1st overall pick.   Hit me over the weekend when the Browns announced they were hiring Scot McCloughan as a consultant for the draft.  Immediately began to think back to comments he made about Mayfield being the quarterback he likes the most out of this draft class.   ProFootballTalk had a this on their site this AM.

    Scot McCloughan on Baker Mayfield

Could be 100% a smokescreen.  Any chance you think the Browns take Mayfield #1 or #4?

As a person, I have great respect for Tyrod. He has given a lot to the Bills team and has been all class. No drama and all effort plus willing to take a pay cut. Whenever he leaves the Bills, I will wish him well.

With that being said, we should be looking to upgrade if possible. My problem with Tyrod is if McD is looking for a pocket QB, he is not the type of QB you would want teaching the young guy how to read the field. I also don't think he should take a pay cut. He is a proven player at a position of need in the league. If he's not on the Bills, he'll be playing somewhere.

I will be amazed if he is starting somewhere next year.  Stranger things have happened but I think a lot of us forget the Bills granted this guy permission to find another starting gig last year and not one team bit.   Hence the reason he took the pay cut in the first place.

  4. My favorite prospects I've watched and wanted the Bills to draft:

Leonard Floyd: Georgia played him all over the field and at the time I thought Rex would love to have him

Robert Nkemdiche:  His film was amazingly fun to watch.  A complete man amongst boys in College.  Appears the whole "doesnt love football and is a weirdo" thing turned out to be accurate.

Hau'oli Kikaha: Just ran all over the field with reckless abandon.  Felt like another guy Rex could have used.

Jake Matthews: Bills needed o-line help that year and his initial kick was a thing of beauty

Deshaun Watson: Jury is still out and I honestly wanted to dislike him as a prospect but much like Mason Rudolph this year he had the intangibles all the very good quarterbacks had before him.  Also was blown away by how good his back shoulder throw was for a prospect.

Bryce Petty: Should have known better given the Baylor offense but he just seemed to have it all coming out.

Austin Sefarian-Jenkins: Watching his film I was sure he was the next Gronk.

Cordarrelle Patterson: What can I say.  I got sucked in.

Players I Hated and Didn't Watch the Bills to Touch:

Odell Beckham:  I will never forget Joe B. saying before that draft that if the Bills couldn't get Sammy they would draft OBJ.  I said out loud in my kitchen "No God, not him"  I thought he was a one route player who couldnt block.

Christian Hackenberg: Much like Josh Allen this year, I didnt get the hype.  Kid looked like a tire fire on film.

Deshone Kizer: I am a Notre Dame guy and Deshone reminded me of EJ Manuel with turnover issues.

Teddy Bridgewater: I still dont think Teddy is a good quarterback.  I think Minnesota hid him most of the time.

Mike Glennon: That neck.  Looked like a statue on tape and that neck.

According to sources I trust it's not going to happen, the only guy they would make a move for if it's the right deal is Darnold so no need to be too concerned. No way this team reaches for another Losman or Manuel.

Also with the pressure of making the playoffs off their backs, this regime can sit back and keep the picks they've stockpiled and stay true to their draft board which is why I expect a stud DT taken with one of the 1st rounders. WR, DE, LB obviously in play too with the other 1st.

If this regime has any sense at all they will find a quarterback.   Cleveland is an amazing example of drafting a lot of stud players at other positions and getting absolutely nowhere with them.   Unless the stud Defensive Tackle can also throw the ball, then I would say your assumption is completely off point.  If it is on point, and this staff doesnt find a quarterback they will be looking for a job in three years and we will be talking about which team that stud defensive tackle will go to next.

It isn't a myth, or a lazy assumption.  Baker Mayfield can play from the pocket, there is absolutely no doubt about that.  He is accurate and he finds passing lanes, but what makes him special is his ability outside the pocket.  It is the same as Russell Wilson.  Wilson can beat you throwing from the pocket, has a terrific arm and is accurate from there.  But he is special outside the pocket.  If you are going to draft Mayfield and stick him inside the pocket 95% of the time you are going to get an effective Quarterback who can move an offense.  if you can find ways to mix in getting him outside the pocket you are getting a Quarterback who can be special.

I don't disagree he plays very well outside the pocket.  My argument is against those who say a majority of his throws come from outside the pocket, which isnt true.  I misunderstood what you were saying, my apologies.

  7. Reading some of these posts I feel like I need to clarify a few things about Mayfield.

    A)  He does not do "his best work" outside of the pocket.  Thats a complete and total myth, and it's a lazy assumption.  He threw from the pocket more than he threw from outside of the pocket.  He was just as accurate throwing from the pocket as he was throwing outside of it.

    B) The Manziel comparison is also lazy.  They are similar in stature, and even then Mayfield is a bigger player.    Manziel is a much better athlete, and nowhere near the passer that Mayfield is.

Unless you're trading into the top 3, you get no guarantee that one of your guys is there... You have to have packages ready in case a player you want falls though.  There's always shocks in the top 10, and there will be trades.

Where do keenum, bridgewater, bradford fall?  What if the Giants really are planning on playing for 3-5 years with Eli?  Ton of variables beyond cousins.

Completely expect either Keenum or Bradford to end up here.   Still feel like the Bills draft a long term answer in the first round, but I don't see them starting a rookie.  Expect them to sign one of the two, most likely Bradford.

  9. You would have to see how free agency and the top portion of the draft plays out.  But if a scenario plays out like this

    Jets- Sign Cousins

    Browns- Take Rosen #1

Giants- Pass on a QB and take Barkley #2

    Broncos- Take Darnold

and Mayfield starts to slide, I serious hope the Bills start working on getting ahead of Arizona.   No reason they can't get up to #13 or #14 by trading the 21st and 53rd pick.  The chart may be dependent on the situation, but it seems like a great deal of the trades that happen follow the formula closely.

  10. I agree.  The best thing that can happen now the Skins have a QB is for one of those teams to get Cousins.  The Jets will be the most likely landing place as they have the most money.

Dream scenario is the Jets signing Cousins, Giants drafting Barkley, Darnold to the Broncos and Mayfield falling to the Bills at 21.

I think in the film clip Billspro linked I see what he means about "be more careful with the football".  He's aggressive, and he's willing to throw with a defender charging at him or while being hit.  Up to a point, that's good, but that didn't always end well in the clip, and it often ends badly in the NFL - balls sail or get tipped and get picked.  Sometimes the QB needs to throw the ball away and live to make another play.

I'm afraid if we want a QB this year, we will be rolling the dice in one or another regard.  Who do you think is a better odds?

Probably goes without saying but all of the consensus first round guys.  I prefer Mayfield and Rudolph to Rosen or Darnold.  If we are talking strictly project guys who really shouldnt see any playing time their first year I think Allen, White, Lauletta, and Ferguson are all guys that could have a career.  With that being said we have one of those type of players on our roster already.  For me its top four guys or bust.

I have watched a bunch of his games and I don't see those problems with him.  Cover1 seems to think he excels at the quick game . Be more careful with the football?  The kid hardly throws interceptions and has never fumbled.  I am not saying he does not have issues, I just don't see those that you pointed out.

At the point PFF is calling him a Day 2 pick before the senior bowl and some of those stats they list...  I don't know man, looks pretty solid to me.

I am not saying he isnt a good prospect, I just dont think he is a late first round pick.  However, the statement he hardly throws interceptions isnt accurate.  He averages close to an interception a game, which is fine but he wasnt scoring enough to counteract that fact.  On top of that the kid is a 5th year senior who started 42 games and just this year made it to 21 wins.

In two games against quality opponents these were his stats

    2014 vs Wisconsin 8/19 173 0 TD/1 INT

    2016 vs Alabama 10/24 135 0 TD/1 INT

Again I have no problem talking about him as a third round pick.  But if youre talking about a 1st round pick I want a guy who is less of a roll of the dice.  And outside of stats, Ive watched the games too.  He does a great job of looking off.  But he has some trouble with accuracy at the middle range and he does hold the ball too long from time to time.

    Lol. Seriously?!?

White reads defenses and throws with anticipation. He is the way better passer.

Could give two craps about who is the better athlete.

White has the size advantage too

Laurletta will go in Peterman range. White is going in Jimmy G range

Kind of funny you put Lauletta in the Peterman range because thats exactly who I saw watching him play today

I am on board with this. I could not have been more impressed with what I saw today. He is easily on the level of Carr and Dalton when they came out.

I went and watched two games of his tape after the senior bowl today.

He did look good today, the touchdown where he looked off the safety was beautiful.  With that being said when you look at his larger body of work I wouldn't touch him before the third round.  He needs to get better making quicker decisions, and also needs to learn how to be more careful with the football.  IMO he cant start day one in the NFL and if I am drafting a quarterback in the 1st I want someone who is closer to a finished product.

I didn't realize Mayfield had left. He's not playing in the game. He's going back to Texas to be with his mom who is or was in the hospital. Falk left too to go to his teammate's funeral. So I guess it's Allen vs White

Jeez, hadnt read that today.   Thats too bad.  Hope is Mom is going to be ok.   Id say he probably didnt have much to show though.  He came in measured over six feet, which I think was the biggest question for him this week.  On top of it by all accounts he had a pretty solid week of practice.  Really nothing more for him to gain.  I think he should be a top ten pick, but will be incredibly happy if he drops.

looking forward to watching the game.  Allen is the superior talent but i don't think he will be able to put it all together.  if Mayfield balls out then he could jump up the draft boards i think.  Broncos have the best look at these guys and will probably take one of them so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out

Been looking forward to the game for a bit now.  Allen's arm is out of this world good, but I just dont see it with him.  Watching his tape reminds me a lot of watching all the throws type film on players like Christian Hackenberg and Deshone Kizer.   Again, you really never know.   I think it would be best for the Bills if the Broncos and Jets get into the Kirk Cousins game.

after watching that practice and how he's all over the field being the general i don't think there's any way he doesn't win a starting job in the NFL.  will he be successful?  not sure yet but his arm looked strong enough and he has the "it factor."  he wants it bad though and he will put in the work i think.  so yes, I now think he is worth a 1st round pick!

Good deal!   Thats the thing about these guys, you really are just making your best educated guess.    Whatever happens he was still my favorite college player ever.  Really enjoyed watching him play this year, and for those exact reasons you mentioned.   If you want someone who loves football he is your guy.

I watched the QB's in practice today on ESPN.  What stood out to me:

    - Josh Allen has a superior arm.  Everyone else looks like they are throwing change-ups vs his fast balls.  It's a shame that he is so inaccurate and doesn't have good touch.  He is so big and has such a strong arm that he really stands out and you are like wow.

    - Mayfield absolutely takes charge and controls the offense.  He is the type of guy that you draft him and then all you hear about in training camp is how he is taking over and before you know it he is getting the starting reps and your veteran is now the backup.  I predict that whatever team picks him, he will win the QB battle and if he doesn't start it will be because the coaches are holding him back on purpose.  There's no way he goes through a training camp and doesn't come out as the starting QB of the team.

    - Both guys started out pretty slow with some really inaccurate passes but then turned it up a notch and delivered some good balls.  You can tell the coaches really like Mayfield.  He's either taking a rep or he's cheering on the guys that are or he's talking to the coaches.  He's not standing around and waiting his turn like the other 30 or so guys that were on the field.

    - Luke Falk had some nice touch on some fades into the endzone but overall his arm looked pretty weak.

    - Josh Allen has so much potential that if he gets picked before Mayfield it's only because a coach thinks he can get it out of him.  Mayfield is the better pro right now.  And that's coming from someone who didn't think Mayfield would pan out.  I wish we could get all of the top QB's on the field so we could watch them compete. Watching them at the combine throwing vs air isn't the same as watching them with the pads on in practice vs defenders.

Are you coming over to the dark side?   I know you would still take Rosen over both of them, but it was kinda cool to see you talk up Mayfield a bit.
