Still too raw for me. This one hurt bad. Don't know if I can watch the kc game this week. A little torn though Being a Wyoming guy, I want to see Logan Wilson, but it's going to be hard watching the chiefs.
I hear u mate But don't allow the chiefs to steal your enjoyment for watching a game. Unless it turns into a blowout ....I draw the line there. Because in my heart I think the Bills would have been as successful as the I suspect the chiefs will be. And if by some miracle Cincinnati makes a game of it and wins OH HAPPY DAY...haha

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway nine,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line
H-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young '
Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

I noticed that (think it was in the WSJ article). Off the top of my head I would have set the win probability much higher - probably 99.5% or something. And remember, that's "win probability," which includes the chance of KC tying and then the Bills ultimately winning in OT.
So you're right - with a little perspective now, we can say:
- it was an extremely unlikely outcome that KC would tie (5 in 100 such scenarios; probably somewhat higher if we say "win or tie")
- it wasn't, however, a Music City Miracle level of improbability, which was probably more like 99.9%
- and this wasn't kicking it off to an average offense over the period of time the win probability is calculated (say, kicking off to 2021 Steelers - a roughly average scoring offense this year, adjusting for the higher scoring environment of 2020-21). Then again the Bills are ostensibly the best defense of 2021 ...
At any rate, this was no Music City Miracle. It was astounding when it happened, but in retrospect ... crap like this happens more than we think it does.
the officiating debacle I feared may occur did not.........The coaching ended up being one now clearly. And Then the timeout rule giving so much advantage to the flip of a coin with NO recourse for the other team. That rule may be changed due to our game. If there is any good I can find beyond the obvious stellar Josh Allen and Gabe Davis stats THAT is one thing...doesnt help us now but at least in the future it may make overtime rules more fair to both teams.

aceman totally concur. And we have the horse to take us across the finish line in Josh Allen. I believe it to my core.

If it were $17 it might be a nice gesture, but $13 feels like shot at us doesn't it?
I think it identifies the fanbase contributing as did $17 for #17 Im fine with it but it is/could be seen as snarky I get it.

I think it can all be summed up in just three words: Deer in Headlights
it is concerning that with ALL the work and detail that goes into an NFL football game the options and actions weren't scripted better...absolutely yes in retrospect. McDermott takes responsibility and the buck stops there. Live and Learn keep it moving.
Im not trying to be a 1bd apologist/rationalist....... I think about how rare was the situation the Bills faced at that juncture of that game..learn from it YES............what else can we do now besides B word and moan ya know? LEARN.
*sigh*

I don’t post much here but seeing some of these posts since Sunday make me laugh.
For years the Bills were the laughing stock of the NFL. Now they are considered one of the best ran organizations in the league. People are hiring are assistant GMs and coordinators. And idiots are in here McDermott gone after 4 playoff appearances in 5 years.
That is exactly how you go back to being a laughing stock, just like the posts from people wanting McDermott gone are.
Post more Justin 🙂 great take.

I wouldn't call it choke more than I'd say it was simply the incorrect strategy and decisions given the situation. What I believe McDermott and Frazier failed to account for most in their decision was the fact the Chiefs had their 3 time outs. If they would have had zero or one time out left then it might have made more sense. That to me is the failure. Failure to factor in the time outs into the decision, failure to account for the fact the sidelines meant nothing to the Chiefs in how they'd play the final 13 seconds of the game. Just bad judgment and thinking based on the situation they faced. And they had plenty of time to run through the thought process between the Bills score and the kick off over a long commercial break in the game. So not enough time to think it through can't be an excuse.
Excellent post. I chose to bolded because for me it is the crux of the matter as clearly stated as I've read. And I agree with it.
The word choke referring to air constriction or something causing someone to choke is a completely different concept than when it is used in a football context. It is Meant to show disgust, ineptitude, FAILURE...........it's a visceral word that if sullivan REALLY wanted to acquiesce and not rub the Bills nose in it..he didnt have to use it..but he did.......and a lot of people identify with it and agree he's right. But That word choice in a literary sense speaks volumes and the Bills heard it loud and clear. It sucks to be called a choker.

Sullivan: Bills' McDermott choked away Super Bowl-caliber season
good morning.
I wish his picture hadn't been front and center I dont want to see that mess. lol Anyway this to me reads as a very predictable factual typical Sullivan piece. Im out of market so I don't read this guy very often unless posted here. Does he have an ax to grind with the Bills or is he just telling things as He sees it. Just his name sends off my skeptical spidey senses just from the general impression I get from 2bd regarding this guy.
I skimmed it and thought yeah yeah yeah yeah....and then it was over for me. I'm still not right with Sundays events yet......exhale

Yes, numb is right. Been a fan since the AFL Championships too.
I ask myself how do they come back from this?
There is always X's and O's, player personnel and coaching changes and all the other stuff to be discussed but this will
come down to their character.
I will support them as a fan and hope they can do it again. This time hopefully in Orchard Park.
how can they do it again? Support #17 with weapons and retain necessary OL to protect him, make wise draft and free agent decisions, retain the strength and conditioning they already have to help ensure a healthy roster.... make strategic wise hires in the front office to replace who we did lose and use the team roster as effectively utilizing all their strengths in an attempt to reduce weaknesses..maximize excellence and stay the course.
easy right? 🙂

for what this is worth hubby told me his Fighting Irish boards are saying the OT rule needs changed He is a HUGE soccer geek and THEY have penalty kicks at the end of Ties as well.........a creative and out of the box solution would be to try 2 point conversions until someone fails and WINNER is clear. I love that idea actually

I respect your take. But at the end of the day, the General Manager makes the draft pick and the coach coaches. I give Beane credit for drafting Allen. If McDermott contributed to the decision, that's fine, credit to him for that. But that certainly doesn't cancel out the in-game coaching errors, imo. You cannot kick the ball into the end zone on the last kickoff. You cannot call two timeouts on defense and then watch as the Chiefs get huge chunks of yards after each timeout, setting up a game-tying FG. It was the most poorly managed 13 seconds in NFL playoff history. To win football games at the highest level requires coaching decisions at the highest level. McDermott has proven again and again and again that he is a poor manager of the clock and a poor in-game strategist. I hope he improves but I'm skeptical. With Josh Allen, I would love to be able to feel complete confidence that the head coach won't ***** defeat from the jaws of victory.
good talk TYVM I respect your take also. m

On the notion that one must categorically be "an idiot" to question Sean McDermott's ability to win playoff football in the NFL:
First, obviously the Bills are a playoff franchise under McDermott whereas prior to McDermott they were 20-year losers. Is that actually a function of McDermott? Or does the fact that the Bills happened to draft possibly the best QB in the NFL play the major determining role? McDermott was 9-7 in his only year without Josh Allen. Nice, many low-scoring close victories in the regular season that year. Would McDermott be winning at the level he has over the past two years if he didn't have one of the league's top QBs? Very simply, no.
Second, is in-game decision-making part of the job description for an NFL coach? I would argue that it is. I would argue that in-game decisions are immensely important, particularly in the playoffs. What glaring in-game mistakes did McDermott make last night? After the beautifully executed and coached opening drive, McDermott reverted to an ultra-conservative coaching style which wasted possessions in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Can any team afford to waste offensive possessions against Kansas City? No. Did McDermott waste possessions? Yes. Did Josh Allen catch fire when given the proper play-calls after McDermott's 3rd quarter punt? Yes. Does McDermott deserve any credit for Allen's otherworldly performance? No. I would suggest that any NFL coach with Josh Allen on his team would benefit from Allen's genius.
So, specifically, what in-game decisions did McDermott make last night which cost his team? He allowed Daboll to improperly call the game offensively after the injury to Honey Badger. You have Josh Allen and you took the ball out of his hands on multiple possessions, when KC had lost a top defensive back, when you know the game is going to require 40ish points, when Kansas City did not waste possessions. That is a game-deciding coaching error. What else? With 13 seconds left in the game, after your QB leads an heroic should-be game-winning drive, you don't kick the ball short of the end zone requiring a Kansas City return to burn off some number of those precious seconds. You make every decision possible, on special teams and on defense, to allow Kansas City to tie the game and send it to overtime. In short, you wasted Josh Allen's performance and wasted a golden opportunity to host an AFC Championship game and win a Super Bowl.
Am I categorically saying "fire McDermott"? No. I wouldn't want to be accused of idiocy after all. Am I saying that Bills fans have a right to seriously question whether Sean McDermott can lead this team to a championship, given his repeated instances of making poor in-game coaching decisions? Yes.one comment I would like to make is in regards to the bolded. This to me is not giving credit to the current regime for Drafting Allen in the first place fcol. He was NO consensus favorite most rated him 3-4th QB......remember??What IF they had taken Rosen lol u catch my drift. I dont think its fair to disparage McD for having a Winning QB when He was directly involved with That Very Decision.
