  1. For those who study these QBs deeply - are Watson's accuracy issues due to footwork or is he just plain inaccurate? Reason I ask is that Dak also had accuracy issues in college when his feet weren't right and he was able to improve this once he got different coaches in NFL.

I think Watson has phenominal accuracy. By far the best in the class for short and intermediate throws. I completely disagree with anyone that says other wise. He does have very inconsistent deep ball accuracy, I think he will get that under control in the NFL. His floor is Alex Smith imo.

    @JosinaAnderson

I'm told the #Bills are scheduled to visit with QB Deshaun Watson at Clemson on Friday, per sources.

I still think we are going QB at 10 based on the visits.

  2. I think Foster is a much better fit at MLB and he might end up being one of the best in the game. I think Ragland has a shot to be one of the best MLB's in the league, so Foster does not fit a need. IMO Cunningham and Reddick would be much better fits for WLB and both of those guys are special as well.

  3.

    @caplannfl

Projected 1st-round pick OT Garett Bolles (6-5, 297) is scheduled to make a pre-draft visit today with the #Bills, source said.

I never really thought about it but we do need a RT and you can't find one later in this draft. That is 3 OTs we have brought in now.

Robinson, Bolles, and Humphrey don't look like top ten picks though. Maybe we will trade down this year!

  4. And what if Watson turns out to be really good and we had a ton of evidence that showed he was? Man, that would be a killer.

Then that would be the worst move in Buffalo Bills history.

Well, I disagree on Howard. He is a monster who played with crappy qbs for a team that didn't need to throw the ball a lot. He's also a great blocker. He could be the next great TE.

I would classify Howard as elite, he is the best TE prospect in the last decade imo. We will be lucky if he is there at 10.

  5. I believe that there are four QBs that will be highly sought after in R1 of this year's draft. Namely, Trubisky, Kizer, Watson, and Mahomes..........not necessarily in that order.

Teams like SF, Chicago, NYJ, Cleveland, and Arizona are all in the market for a potential franchise QB.

BTW, I think the Bills would like to draft a QB, but will likely pass on any QB in R1 since they have T. Taylor.

That means that like any other position that is not very deep, once the run begins teams tend to panic and make a move to fill their need. Well the QB position is no different.

If say NYJ decides to take Trubisky at #6 we may see teams like Cleveland and Arizona looking to move up to grab one of the three remaining QBs mentioned above. That would play right into the Bills' hands.

Those teams may be willing to part with much more than they normally would to move up to #10 overall because:

    1. A potential franchise QB is hard to come by.

    2. The competition amongst teams willing to move up could and likely would drive up the price.

IMHO, this would be the best case scenario for a Bills team that has a whole lot of needs to fill.

I don't see it playing out this way. We have shown interest in a QB. If anything, those teams are going to trade with Carolina or the Bengals to jump us for their guy.

I don't see a smokescreen helping us in a trade down scenario but it may help a guy drop to us if we don't like any of the QBs.

Houston made try to trade up with us, but if we like the Qb on the board at that pick we are going to draft him.

  6.

It was said that spread QB's can't play in the NFL a few years ago. That still exists but is going away now as NFL teams are slowly realizing that they will have to adjust. Mahomes had a 4.0 GPA, he will learn the terminology.

Goff's struggles were based on an NFL team using him incorrectly. Cowboys created a simplified offense for Dak last year. When they tried to expand playbook to full Tony Romo offense he struggled against the Eagles. Then they went back to the simple offense and Dak moved down the field with ease.

All of the college QB's will need to adjust to the NFL. It will take a smart plan and offensive coordinator to bring these prospects along correctly.

If we draft a Qb we better bring them along slow and build an offence around them. We have not shown the ability to do that in the past.

  7. I agree with you in that a QB's ball velocity isn't the be-all-end-all stat. But i disagree on how you're applying that to Watson. His game velocity raises questions IMO. It didn't look like a 49, but it did look marginal for the NFL. Brees is an odd comp to make to say Watson should be a first rounder because he was a second round pick. Also I don't see it as a slight to a QB to say you think he's a top of the second round player. Brees fell to 33 because he was short, lacked velocity and had an injury plagued senior season. I had a young coworker who had just finished at Purdue and came to work with us. His gf was still there for her senior year. She was one of the team's trainers. His back was messed up that season. That certainly affected his throwing his senior season.

So how does that compare with Watson? Well, first I'd look at differences. Watson is taller and far more athletic than Brees. But Brees is much, much more accurate. Accuracy would be a concern of mine with Watson even if his velocity was sitting at 55, but combined those two are a killer. The weaker a QB's arm, the more accurate he must be and Watson hasn't shown that he has that accuracy. I'll throw in a caveat to some of this, however. What if Watson isn't quite right physically or there is a correctable mechanical flaw that could be fixed that would improve his velocity and/or accuracy? That's what I don't know. It would probably change my opinion that he's a prospect that deserves to go at the top of the second round though. But from what I've seen so far and what I know, that's where he belongs.

I agree with what your saying, ideally Watson is a second round prospect. I do think he will go in round 1 though. I would only draft him if my coaches were comfortable they could improve his velocity with mechanics as well. I don't think the Bills will draft him, he would probably do better in a dome environment like Houston. The ball velocity could be an issue in our stadium but a non-issue in a dome stadium. I just think when you take in the whole picture Watson is still a good prospect even with the low velocity.

  8. Watson. I'm tired of settling for the 3rd and 4th level QBs in a draft. I'm tired of drafting guys that didn't play at big time schools or didn't do a lot of winning. I want the guy that everybody knows as being a winner. A guy that beat the best teams and the best defenses. A guy that instantly becomes the guy, that a common fan associates with your franchise. A guy that is the first name on a strangers mouth when you tell them you are a bills fan. This guy reminds me a ton of Mariota and fits the offense that we currently play. Enough settling for the other guys, and enough forcing guys that don't belong. Go get the guy that will be our QB for 10 years and finally be a real contender. When was the last time the Bills drafted the most successful and famous college QB and had that guy on their roster going into an NFL season? I would say never.

He gets my vote as well.

  9. No we don't. What did Teddy throw at the combine? Matt Ryan? Matt Stafford? Andrew Luck? Sam Bradford? Ryan Tannehill? Derek Carr? Not to mention the 100 other backups, there are 7 NFL starters where we have no data. That's a significant chunk of the league, and closer to half of all semi-successful or higher QB's in the NFL. So that's quite enough of "we have the numbers." Half of the decent starters of the NFL ain't sufficient.

    You sounded quite concerned.

There is no doubt that Watson does not have a huge arm. There is no way his arm is worse than Brees or Bridgewater though. Watson has shown the ability to make all the throws on tape, he has outstanding ball placement on short and intermediate throws. He gets the ball out quick with anticipation which may make up for his lack of arm strength. You see the same thing with Drew Brees.

His arm strength passes the eye test.

Here is a good article on ball velocity. I think it is a pretty useless metric. There are not many good Qbs on this list, it shows no good QBs with a ball velocity of above 57mph and below 53mph. They did mention Drew Brees was around 52mph (in the NFL) which mean he was probably around 50mph or less when entering the NFL. I see Watson as a comparable touch thrower to Brees when he was coming out. Although, Watson had a better college career which is why he will go in the first round and not the second round.

  10. I'm a Bills optimist so I would certainly see enough highlights from Clemson if we drafted him to get behind it. But the guy on the radio did sound fairly concerned, which made me think about it more so than I would have thought about hand size or bench press reps. Which I think should concern everyone a little bit unless I'm missing something.
