We’ll grab one, but not necessarily in the first round.  As far as development, there are multiple positions that takes time, for example, QB, O Lineman, and even LB’s.  It should be an interesting spring or winter with free agency, and the draft.  I do agree I would rather bundle picks for whatever position to go from 9 to maybe 5 or 6. If we hit on the right guys, this team will be much better.

I don't see us sitting at 22 and I don't see us trading back, Beane won't trade a pick next year, but would trade this year

    Pick 22 (780) + Pick 54 (360) = 1140

    Indy Pick 13 = 1150

    Reasonable

Our 1st 3 picks could get us to 10 with CLE

    Not reasonable

Beane & Machine Gun .. respectfully but please no .. trading up assumes we're one player away in my opinion ... I'd rather go the opposite direction .. if the draft is as loaded as many believe with WR talent and get more #2's and #3's.  The Allen & Edmunds draft was crucial to get cornerstones on both sides of the ball.  Mission Accomplished .. now we need to stockpile multiple quality picks.  I trust the process, but would really like them protect those 1st 3 round picks this year or increase them.

  2. I see a lot of commentary on our pick at #22 .. and I agree we need WR help desperately  ... but wondering out loud ... maybe better to wait beyond round 1.  I also see where there are many posts about all these WR's going before pick #22.  I'm not so sure of that given recent history (see below), that such a run is reality and last time such a run happened (see 2017 below .. 3 WR picks before pick 10) .. what a nightmare.

That said, Watkins hangover aside, recent history and said pick performance is a great teacher here.  ArmChair QB'ing past drafts is like suiting up as Captain Obvious.  That said, put me in the camp to wait till rounds 2 and 3 for the WR and grab BPA at 22 (say OL or Lorax replacement).

Check out the quality of WR's drafted in round 1 in the past 5 years.

2019 - (2) in first round .. Hollywood Brown (not bad rookie year), NKeal Harry

2018 - (2) in the first round ... DJ Moore, Calvin Ridley (best of the 5 years in my opinion)

2017 - (3) in the first round .. Banner year for GM's .. all picked before pick #10 .. again these are year 3 WR's ... Corey Davis, Mike Williams, John Ross ... woof

2016 - (4) in the first round ... Another GM cluster ... Corey Coleman, Will Fuller (OK), Josh Doctson, LaQuan Treadwell ... woof

2015 - (6) in the first round ... Amari Cooper (best of above bunch), Kevin White, DeVante Parker, Nelson Aghlor, Breshad Perriman, Phillip Dorsett ... so I ask you which one of these net of Cooper do you bet the house on after their rookie contract??

That said .. round 2 / 3 WR's in same draft (there are more .. but pulling names that in my opinion .. stand up better to many from Round 1)

2019 - Deebo Samuel / AJ Brown --- Yes Please

2018 - DJ Chark, Christian Kirk ... now granted for this year .. the 1st round is likely better

2017 - the infamous Zay Jones pick .. JuJu (stated on many a post), Cooper Cupp, Chris Godwin, Kenny Golladay .. again the point being compare to the first round choices .. WOOF

2016 - Michael "Frickin" Thomas, Tyler Boyd ...

2015 - Tyler Lockett .... past that not a lot

  3. For all the millions his agent made off him .. shocked some form of intervention and extended stay in a clinic isn't being worked out.   Granted he'd fight like hell, but at a certain point an adult has to enter the room.

This is a sad downfall .. and its all visual on social media posts.

Props to the Hollywood PAL (Police Athletic League) in cutting ties and refunding donations and referencing being a role model is more important than funds to the kids in their league.  His latest video towards police in front of his kids, CRAY CRAY.

  4. Before we approach Shaq and Phillips ... my preference is pull forward Tre White and even Poyer and lock those down ... then see what's left in terms of FA money  .... those guys have showed from day 1 of their contracts unlike Shaq ... I love Phillips alot with his attitude (still can't believe he we cut by Dolphins)and play ... so if had to coin flip between the two .. I'll take Phillips.  I see comments about Horrible Harry coming back and again he's a fan favorite (illegitimate son of Kyle Williams), but he's not Phillips in the middle.

Isaiah McKenzie (25 yrs old) (RFA) (600K AVV)

Robert Foster (26 yrs old) (EFRA) (525K AVV)

    My Take:

First, I will address the expiring contracts. They really are not expiring contracts because McKenzie will get the Original Tender and be back, I don’t think Bills need to go anything higher than the original tender to keep him.  Foster will get his EFRA tender and be back. These are both players that need to be replaced but will be back just because of their contract status of both being very cheap to bring back.  I will never really understand what happened with Foster this year, compared to last year, it looked like he was poised to break out and be a NO1 WR, he never did, he has had motivation issues in the past did that catch back up with him?  But the reality is Duke Williams brings more to this offense and the numbers show that out as well.

Isaiah McKenzie– 39 TGTs, 254 yards 1 TD, Catch Rate 69% and a DVOA -20.8%,

Robert Foster– 18 TGTs, 64 yards, 0 TDs, Catch Rate 17% 2 DPI Drawn 58 yards and a DVOA -42.0%

    Duke Williams – 19 TGTs, 166 yards, 1 TD, Catch Rate 63% and a DVOA +2.8%

Now to the other WRs (not Roberts he is a Return Man not a WR).  Brown and Beasley.  Both have been great additions as well but looking at the dead money on these guys knowing they were JUST SIGNED I have to tip my hat to Beane.  And thing point I am going to bold here but you can look at all the UFAs Beane as signed in my other position groups they are all essentially on year deals with easy outs.  This is amazing cap management and solidifies to me that they can go get WHOEVER they want and not hurt their cap long term because he has shown a capability to craft cap friendly early outs.  So not back on task.

John Brown – 115 TGTs, 1060 yards, 6 TDs, Catch Rate 63%, 4 Drops (T19th in NFL) and a DVOA +11.1% (Ranks 22nd in NFL)

Cole Beasley – 105 TGTs, 778 yards, 6 TDs, Catch Rate 64%, 5 Drops (T10th in NFL), drew 1 DPI for 26 yards and a DVOA of +2.5 (Ranks 39th in NFL)

I probably am going to get fragged for this, but John Brown is an excellent WR2 not a WR1.  But that being said, I do like John Brown at a top end WR1B or WR2.  I think the worst play from him that I saw was the failed toe tap in the WC game, I know he logged 4 drops, but I don’t remember one really hurting a drive IE Big spot like I can with Knox’s and Beasley drops.  But either way another thing I do like that Brown gave is that 73.6% of his catches resulted in a first down. Which ranks him in 8th in the NFL with WRs and TEs with over 50 catches.  What I knew about him coming into Buffalo was he was blazing fast and that was confirmed, what I didn’t know and what he opened my eyes up to is how complete of a WR he is.  His route running is exceptional as well he always seemed to me that he was open, he easily would find holes in Zones, and in Man coverage he was always gaining separation out of his breaks as well.  This was a good signing from Buffalo and see why they also tried to sign him last year.

Beasley also had a respectable 1st down conversion of 55.2% of his catches resulting in First down.  What I noticed about him, is he is better against man than he is against a zone.  I think the reason that is the way he runs routes and the crispness off then he gets immediate separation out of breaks.  Against a zone it is more of a feel to find the soft-spot or the seam in the zone.  My Cowboy friends told me that if he gets bracketed it can take him out of games, and I think that was seen as well.  Get another legit threat at WR or TE and it becomes much harder to do that too him.

The organizational depth in this group is atrocious.  There are really only 2 NFL caliber WRs on this roster and needs infusion of talent. So, I can see another offseason like last with going into the position multiple times, maybe a couple lower tier WRs via UFA and using a 1st or 2nd in the draft, or even a couple of draft picks.  How this position group gets addressed this offseason will be interesting.

Possible Trade TGTs (hard to gauge until after SB):

Final thinking in this Position group for me would be:

This position group needs work with right now only two legit NFL receivers on the roster.  Before I start with what I would do let me address what this would turn into.  AJ Green if I can get him to accept a Prove it Deal a 1-year 12M with little GTD I would.  Or I would also offer about what his value will be (with INJ and age) 2-year 19M with 9M GTD, 9.5M AVV.  But I don’t think he would accept that.  Now what I would like Bills to look at.

Go after a Tier 2 WR in UFA.  My Choice will be Breshard Perriman I don’t think Tampa is in a position to sign him.  And I think a Cole Beasley Contract is acceptable and will get it done 4 years 29M, 12 GTD with a 7.25M AVV and an easy out after the first year.  That will give you the same Deep speed as Foster and allows for the Rookie not to have to come right in and excel.  He really came on late in the year with Tampa.  That give me at last 3 real NFL WRs on the roster before the draft.

In the draft I would take 2.  One early and one late.  My Early target right now is Laviska Shenault.  Reason why is he has the skill set right now we are filling with players.  Big and Powerful (Duke Williams). Plenty of Speed (will time in 4.4s or lower, Robert Foster) and can run jet sweeps, out of backfield, QB the WC similar to McKenzie).  He also has a good catch radius and can high point balls.

In Later round get be the Big TGT for competition with Duke Williams so like a Hodgins, Claypool, Mims.

This is the position group I would like addressed in the first round.  You Can see in round 3-5 the depth thins out in the outside WR group, so a lot of those Tier 3 guys are going to be over drafted.  Yes it is a deep draft like everyone is saying but that depth I fully anticipate will get gone fast, and if we wait until the second round (where we are picking we are going to miss out)

GREAT WORK Bobby ... this is awesome reading now that we're in the offseason .. thanks so much for the effort and detail.  AWESOME!!!

Jerry just revealed he played 2019 with torn ligaments in his wrist. When it came to the playoff game and a 1 and done scenario he was the most disruptive player on our defense Saturday logging 4 tackles & 3 sacks while causing a couple others.

I agree Jerry had an awesome playoff game ... guess my comment was driven by looking more long term .. he'll be 32 at start of next year and beyond the playoff game (ligament issue aside for 2019)  it's a $9MM cap hit ... its kind of like groundhog day ... hard to believe he's been with us since 2013 ... but are his best year's behind him and time to look a little longer term and retool with younger talent .. hence my commentary on using his salary towards signing Yannick.  Age wise he certainly has more runway at this stage of his career.

We will not pick at #22.

You know ... for a change .. I wouldn't mind a trade back and have multiple in round 2 .. .there appears to be a lot of quality and if the package is right and we see WRs a plenty that can be had in the 2nd ... let's pull a Jimmy Johnson move.

  8. is it just me .. but can you name the Bills DE player that for the 2019 season had 14 solo tackles (not including playoff game) and 4.5 sacks .. 6 tackles for loss .. and 9 QB hits (aka grazed the QB post pass)  ... granted missed 4 games (including Jets mass benching) .. so that's 12 games .. so roughly 1 tackle per game .. less than 1 QB hit and a one sack every 3 games ... now more clues .. we're paying that player $9MM a year and is 31 years old for a speed position.

I say cut Hughes (not sure of cap hit) and Murphy ... those two pay for Yannick .. draft another DE in 3rd round

The Bills lost 4 of their last 5 games.

I am concerned that next year will not be as kind in the schedule,  lack of injuries and some luck that got us to ten wins.

Good chance of regression,  and last night did nothing to assuage my concerns.

OK .. but look at the roster overhaul last year between 6 win team and 10 win team ...now Beane gets to go back into the roster laboratory and remake the 2020 edition ... all this talk about schedule ... throw out the Jets Loss at year end  ... we beat TN (a playoff winner in their crib) .. we were driving for a tie against the #1 AFC seed ... played NE tough twice .. and with limited talent on offense ... I haven’t read too many posts on this thread because of so many pages. But this is, by far, the sanest and most rational post that I have read. Really, going from six and 10 to 10 and six! How often does that happen in this league? And, in particular,I agree with your comments about the offense. Josh has had one real weapon or year in Singleterry. He made John Brown a good receiver this year but he disappears too often and games particularly at big moments. He needs a receiver like Hopkins. I do believe the offense will be better next year because he Josh will have more weapons and he will continue to develop. Along with his awesome physical skills the most impressive thing about Josh is his intelligence and his work ethic. So I choose to be optimistic.

to put this in some perspective, compare my take on this disappointing loss to what’s going on in another thread. I won’t name names or give details. But in the other thread the OP actually suggested the Buffalo Bills fans that they should not go and greet the team at the airport when they arrive because of the loss yesterday. Pathetic! And to me as a fan, insulting.

yes, we could have/should have won the game. But we lost in overtime to an evenly matched opponent at their field. Their quarterback made one terrific play that won the game for them. The loss was not embarrassing in the least to me.

Yeah some of the commentary on that airport greeting thread and many others is insane ... there are a few of our TBD Keyboard warriors that need to

Pretty obvious after yesterdays loss to Houston McD is the kind of coach that will only get you so far. It has trended that way for a while now based on his body of work.

He has been great at changing the culture and getting players to play hard, tons of credit there but he has been abysmal at hiring decent coaches and game planning and game management.

He generally has said the right things after games but throwing Allen under the bus yesterday will have some lasting affects, as a coach with good young players, stuff like that can't be said to the media before watching tape when you yourself had way way more questionable bad decisions than the young guy you just roasted. Bad precedent going forward, when push comes to shove the coach doesn't have your back when all he spews is to have each others back, very hypocritical.

McD was winning me over as the coach to get us to the promise land but after last nights many many gaffs and subsequent blaming Allen, i've soured on McD and see him nothing more than coach who will get a team to the playoffs on occasion but never advance very far.

Pop Gun .. as veteran on here ... aren't you happier with McD vs. the 10+ coaches we've had in non playoff years?  Not sure I understand the hiring of decent coaches or game planning.  Why is Daboll getting HC interviews if the rest of the NFL public thinks he's so bad ... Frazier has managed a top flight defense that held many an offense to <20 points all year.

  15. 53 minutes ago, Pay_Poyer said:

I’m not saying that Allen doesn’t deserve blame, but he’s not the one who gave up 19 points in the second half. And yes, he made some boneheaded decisions (throwing deep to a FB, that lateral) but let’s not forget some of the GREAT throws he made-the throw across the field to Duke, the laser to Singletary on third down across his body as he was forced to the sideline, the perfect throw to Duke in the end zone (tough catch but it could’ve been made).

This is the problem with social media today. Very rarely do people acknowledge the good and bad. If you didn’t like Allen from the beginning you are always looking at the flaws. If you’re in team Allen you are always looking for other reasons why the team played poorly. Was he a reason for the loss last night-yes. If he is in your top 2 or 3 reasons why they lost though you weren’t watching the same game I was

Totally agree with you comment here ... just curious can you expand you tag to Pay - Poyer & White :)

  16. Catching up on morning reading and not read all 28 pages of comments on this line .. but the last few is all about the offense, play calling, etc.  Yes we only scored 19 points and all the BLAH BLAH BLAH about the offense and/or Josh Allen .. I'll come back to that.

The reality is as it relates to the game ... our defense had the chance to shut the door and didn't unfortunately ... and I love our defense.  But the 3rd and 18 play in O/T from their 19 yard line ... I repeat their 19 yard line and we have 3/4's of our defense 20 yards deep and can't come up and stop Duke Johnson, why is Edmunds playing that deep versus shadowing the RB out of the backfield?  Then two defenders unable to wrap up Watson (and ton of respect for his play) on their 44 yard line later in the drive for the 34 yard completion that led to the game winning field goal.

Now back to our offense ... bottom line our talent on that side of the ball vs. the other playoff teams (net of Philly with their injuries) is not remotely close.  Though I love the moves by Beane this past off-season ... he's not done yet.  Josh and Daboll have done more with less all season long.  I trust Beane will continue to address.

I'll take 3000% of where Josh Allen is in year 2 and continue to be a fan ...  we were down 3 points with no timeouts and ball on our 30 yard line at the end of the game .. and our QB engineered a drive (including a 20 year scramble) to get us a game tying field goal.

If you read the pre-season threads ... well over 90% never rationally thought a 10 win season ... we got that and the 2nd playoff birth in 3 years under the McBeane regime ... can we be thankful for the team's resurrection to quality football and TRUST THE PROCESS!! ... Looking forward to the draft and free agency and please please please resign Tre White ASAP ... pay the man .. let's not have a Gilmore flashback.
