  1. It’s interesting to me he used the word “leaders” and not “talent”. I think we are putting words in his mouth talking about the talented players only. It’s proven this guy loves old less talented leaders and puts a premium on these players. Sometimes to the detriment of talent.

The more I think about talent the more I think the greatest talent (best NFL players) were frequently not leaders. Many (most?) were self-centered guys with a tremendous amount of individualistic drive to be the best at their position.

Sean McDermott wants Bills to remain as intact as possible

Head coach Sean McDermott and General Manager Brandon Beane have spent a lot of time overhauling the Bills roster since joining the organization in 2017, but McDermott’s hope for this offseason isn’t centered around bringing new faces to Buffalo.

McDermott said at a Tuesday press conference that a team picks up a different identity every year, but that he hopes to “keep as much of this team intact as possible” heading into next season. He said that his experience with the Panthers after Super Bowl 50 has colored his thinking on the subject.

“One of the things that happened when we came off the Super Bowl in Carolina is we probably let too many of the leaders out of the building,” McDermott said, via the Buffalo News. “Some of that comes with retirements and other factors. That’s part of what I meant with keeping as much of this team intact as possible. Each team is different but you give yourself a better chance if you keep the team intact.”

When we get to the SB (and win) we can revisit this idea. Until then, let’s get a team on players capable of getting us there first.

Between this screw up by Brown, the two Duke drops, Beasley’s vanishing act, Gore’s corpse and whatever the hell is going on that DiMarco is running go routes while McKenzie’s 5’8 body is trying to shield defenders on comebacks, the need for playmakers was EVIDENT Saturday.

How about just using these guys based on their strengths/talents as an easy first step? This OC designs plays as if the team is full of Pro Bowlers. In doing so he puts our avg talent in hard to succeed situations. And then guess what, they don’t or can’t execute the play!?!?

Just to reiterate: Daboll actually called a play, in an actual NFL playoff game, consisting of an empty backfield and Pat Dimarco, Devin Singletary, and Lee Smith lined up wide. Brown was lined up in the slot and McKenzie lined up as TE. Deep routes were run by Dimarco (go) and Smith (deep post). None of this a typo.

With the game on the line ....

They were in prevent from what I could tell, and it worked perfectly until he was able to run for a first...he caught the ball in the middle of the field 10 yards or so from a first down with the entire defense ready to swarm and tackle him short by 5 yards...they were too far away though...why is the question, I'm thinking that was on players and not coaches...again, the ball went to the exact spot you would want in that situation to force a 4th down.

I agree. That play and the Watson double sack was lack of execution not some poor D philosophy; players not tackling or knowing where the first down was. The blitz by Neal was dialed perfectly but executed terribly.

Frank Gore lost us the game. Singletary had 4.5 YPC. Gore had 2.8 YPC. Yet he had 8 rushes to Singlerary's 13 rushes. One of his rushes went for 14 yards, the other 7 averaged 1 yard per carry. That's 7 plays in a close football game that we essentially threw away. I don't think any other player in this game had that many wasted plays, not even Allen. Worst of all, 2 of those rushes were on the 2 most critical drives of the game.

Oh did I say Frank Gore? I meant Brian Daboll.

A Gore rush is essentially a kneel down.

Right. Watson won his first playoff game yesterday. You don't always start with a win.

I look around the NFL at a lot of dreck QBs. Allen may not be a world-beater at the moment but if someone out there thinks there's a free agent or 22nd draft pick QB better than Allen and the future he has, you're high.

I hear this a lot. They won this year because they had a team built to win with defense. They have yet to have a team built to win on offense. Next year should see an improved offense...many returning players and 1-2 new faces at important positions like RT and WR1.

Right! We know their win/loss scoring above or below 20 pts. The D has shown consistently to be able to hold anybody to around that number. The offense needs to average another 6 pts/game (at least) and then you’ll see us winning close games against good teams and blowing out bad teams. A WR, RT, reliable TE, and good backup RB could easily get us those 6 pts. Let’s hope the staff hits on those.

I remain completely confident in the coaching staff and front office.   That doesn't mean I always agree with their decisions, but I do agree with their philosophy, foresight, and dedication to the process.

They have shown on numerous occasions to be able to identify and acknowledge when they’re wrong and correct it. I think that shows they know they’re still learning. The hard part, being a leader of men, is why most coaches fail. I think this staff has that.

I’m not certain how McD gets better in-game though, that’s his biggest weakness and it doesn’t seem to be improving. His personnel decisions could use some upgrade as well.

Overall we are in a good position comparatively, but unless the coaches and young talent make some leaps quickly our window may start to close.

Who said they were playing not to win against the Pats? This was a team with a bad offence that was able to get into the playoffs because of an easy schedule and there being alot of bad/mediocre teams in the league this year. They couldn't beat the good teams and needed alot of help and luck to squeak out wins in games against bad teams.

Perhaps “playing not to win” should be replaced with “playing conservatively and hoping to win”.

Next season’s schedule is brutal. This was the year to take advantage. This game was ours. Completely blown and very concerning. McDermott is great at getting these guys ready through the week. On game day he is terrible. The weekly inactives are inexcusable. Clock management is the worst I have ever seen. When to challenge or not is embarrassing. No adjustments and it’s just play for a fg as soon as you cross the 50. I love the way this gets ready to play week to week. But within the game itself, I hate the coaching.

Very frustrating once we cross midfield. We get there with ease and then immediately start going backwards with Gore runs, holds, Offside, or dumb Allen sacks. The FG that was the goal is never a guarantee. If the goal was TD, maybe things would be different?

  11. Looking at the last month of games, the Bills limped into the playoffs, never scored more than 17 pts and only beat the Steelers. Houston beat the Pats and Titans and scored around 24 pts/game in that stretch. At the risk of injury, I think (in hindsight) it was a poor decision playing to not win in NE and sitting starters week 17. This team was rolling end of November but we took our foot off the gas, especially once we clinched. Hard to make a playoff run not coming in hot.

We are a better team than Houston. Our coaches are decent schemers but terrible at in-game management and adjustments. The team reflects that in their “chicken with head cut off” approach during crunch time. Spontaneity is lost on this team. I hope this experience hardens them, and creates the poise and discipline necessary to make the next steps in the coming season(s).

Would it really hurt this team to deactivate Lee Smith, DiMarco and Foster in order to add Duke & TJ. The answer is NO!

This is all part of Daboll's year of stupidity.

I blame McD for the lineups. I actually think adding these two will help Daboll with plays designed for their skill sets.

I don't know if anyone addressed this already, but does anyone think they tried to beat them with a more vanilla gameplan knowing the odds to take the division were next to nothing? Not wanting to put anything new on tape in case we see them a third time?

I do feel good about how these guys will play in January. I like that Allen threw no picks even if he was slow to get started. We were knocking on the door again. Third time's a charm?

If that is Daboll’s plan I don’t trust him in the bigger games to: 1) design new plays that will work, and 2) have the young players execute those new plays. Putting more plays that have worked (or close) on tape will make it equally hard for a D to know what’s coming, IMO. And give the players practice in real situations. Holding some gadget play that might blow up in their back pocket wreaks of desperation and lack of imagination to me.

You can criticize our playcalling. You can criticize the refs. You can say there are no moral victories.

What you cannot deny is that we belong on the field with the best teams in our conference. You cannot  deny that Josh Allen gets better with each successive week.

You cannot deny that Coach Clappy has expunged the ghosts of the Decade of Fail. You cannot deny that the front office of Pegula/Beane/McDermott is one for the ages .

We are nascent and Patriots are in decline. I don't deny that Belicheat called a great game but no one can deny that we are on the way up and they are getting older .

We are going to get a second chance at either the Pats or Ravens. Who wants to play us now?

I mostly agree but you can’t exorcise the ghosts of the past until you drop an L on the Pats. You can’t be a true contender being the 2nd best team in your division. We’re close, but things need to progress quickly.

The Rams/Eagles were nascent but already declining. In this league (apart from NE) dynasties last 2-3 years. The window to take a title is short-lived.

I think we’re all frustrated that we saw a pretty poor effort by our squad but still had a chance to beat one of the best. NE played nearly flawless and better than late, and we were one play away. There’s hope there. Let’s hope on our second chance that both the coaches scheme and players execute better.
