  1. ok, call me 'boomer'.

I have no idea what that's about. I've seen the Slime Time thing during games, but still don't have any idea what it is. I know it's associated with Nickelodeon somehow. Guessing it has something to do with the NFL introducing the league to kids. (?)

  2. That guy has too much time on his hands.

I'm not seeing anything that looks like an attempt to slide in most of those clips. Even in the 52 yard run last game, I didn't see it. What I saw appeared to be Josh considering his options in those split seconds. I believe there was very slight hesitation before he decided he could keep going. Nothing unusual there. When a running back makes the move they call it a juke.

He's only not "safe" amongst a portion of posters on here who don't live in reality. The same kind of posters who thought Matt Araiza was going to come back in the Playoffs.

Truth is he always has had a secure position. Even if we missed the playoffs, by all accounts, he was going to be given another year.

The only real chance of a switch would have been if he lost the team and Josh said he didn't want to play under him anymore. Instead, the team rallied around him after the Ty Dunne hit piece and support him more than ever.

After 6 straight wins, another division title, and another Playoff win - he's 1000% not going anywhere after this season. You can hope otherwise, but it doesn't matter. It's not happening.

The mentality of the 'fire McDermott' crowd is beyond stupid.

I guess if a team doesn't win the Superbowl within 5 years or so, the head coach should be dismissed. Brilliant. Of course, there's never any real solution offered by those voices. Just "fire the coach".

The NFL landscape is littered with fired coaches who were sure-fire candidates from the coordinator ranks.

Who's your answer? What can't miss coach is coming to Buffalo? Are you such a gambler that you'll put all your chips on a coordinator with no track record over the guy who's led his team into the playoff in 6 out of 7 seasons? Maybe you'd prefer a retread like Belichick or Carroll. No thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't make that bet. The better odds are that we'd be right back to the good old days of wishing we made the playoffs.

Compare the past 7 years of Bills football to the previous 17.  At least we've had a chance! We've had a very entertaining team we can be proud of.

The Bills under McDermott have fielded a competitive squad every year under his guidance. They've developed mid-round players into valuable contributors. Free agents want to come to Buffalo. He has the respect of those who play under him. We have a team that should be competitive every year.

I'm grateful that the revolving door of Jauron, Mularkey, Williams, Ryan, etc. is a distant memory.

Be thankful that we have someone a classy as McDermott leading our Bills today and for the foreseeable future.

You may not realize it yet, but these are the good old days

  4. The 'leave of absence' line was nothing more than an extremely gracious way to part ways with a longtime and much respected coach and former player.

Clearly, McDermott wanted to take charge of the defense. There was zero chance Frazier was coming back after a year.

We have a classy coach who let the veteran leave with dignity.

It would be hard to have a drastically worse hire for a team with Super Bowl aspirations than Leslie Frazier. You know with absolute certainty that the guy won't get you there.

For a disaster organization just looking to get respectable? Maybe.

The trend is recent years has been younger innovative coaches like Sean McVay, McDaniel, etc. It's not out of the ordinary any more to have coach that hasn't yet celebrated their 40th birthday. The days of hiring a coach from the era of goalposts in the back of the endzone that were shaped like an 'H' are over.

There are too many available candidates that would be better choices than Frazier.

The weird thing is he played exactly one game, Week 1 vs the Rams last season, as a timing route pocket passer and then it just never happened again.

Yes. There were a couple of other games in which it looked more like quick throw, dink & dunk stuff. And it worked. But then it was abandoned.
My belief is that Josh is always in 4th gear. A hurry-up, 2 minute style suits him. I’d like to see them use it more often. Obviously, it couldn’t be used throughout as it would wear down the rest of the offense, but it could be used more often to get opposing defenses on their heals

Beating Pitt at home and the winner of the the KC/Miami game also at home are musts for this playoffs to be a success for us, at minimum.  Then if Baltimore gets upset, so would be a home game AFC CG win.

I believe the only possible teams to come to Buffalo with a win are Houston, Cleveland, or KC.  If the Bills and Dolphins win, fish go to Baltimore.

It's a moot point. Miami won't win in those less than ideal conditions and with a banged up squad.

  9. I'm not worried about Mason Rudolph - I'm more concerned about them going jumbo with 3 TEs and running it down our throats with Harris, controlling the clock, wearing out our defense, and keeping it out of Josh's hands while the offense freezes up on the sidelines.

Hoping our occasionally porous run defense doesn't raise it's ugly head and the return of DQ helps plug the middle.

On offense the Bills need to set the tone and move the ball methodically down the field. Put the cape away and take enough chunks of yardage to get first downs and points on the board.

The Steelers are a well-coached team. I'm not worried, but not over confident either.

  10. Yes, the NFL are masters of generating revenue from rabid fans and gamblers like us.
Before we vilify the greedy NFL, let’s stop to remember the benefits of all this greed and technology.

There was a time when we could only read a recap or check the box score in the next day’s newspaper.  Yes kids, in my adult lifetime there was once no internet.  We were limited to whatever games were being shown on local television.  There was no replay on the NFL Network. If we missed it, we might see highlights on a sports show.

If you relocated away from your hometown team (as I did in the mid ‘80’s), you had few opportunities to watch your favorite team. I used to check the TV listings as soon as they were published with hope that the Bills were being shown in the Atlanta market. Sadly, they often weren’t, especially during the lean years when Kelly first arrived.
So, for all the whining about Peacock, steaming, greed, etc., be thankful that there are reasonably easy and accessible ways to watch every game of your favorite team.  The dark ages of minimal access are in the rear view mirror. Yes, you might have to lay out a few bucks. Whaaaa!!!  Quit expecting something for nothing!
You still have the choice to go back to watching whatever is being broadcast on your local stations over the air.  At least you can come here and those of us who gave into the NFL’s greed can tell you all about the game.

I could get if it was amazon exclusive like the TNF games because that's at least a mainstream service but this peacock stuff makes no sense other than a blatant money grab by the NFL and NBC networks.

This is how they become mainstream services.

All the historically big networks now have streaming partners.
I believe it’s their answer to fight DVR commercial ad skipping. I love being able to record shows with DVR and FF through ads. Streaming forces us back to pre VCR days when we had no choice but to be brainwashed by Madison Ave. every 10 minutes.

  12. Same as always. He is a very respectable man who has done a remarkable job keeping the Bills in contention. I expect he’ll make some mistakes (as we all do), but I’m also confident that he’s the type of person who will try to learn from his mistakes, correct them, and move forward.
For you knuckleheads who keep calling for his dismissal, I’ve yet to hear anyone name a replacement who they can say with 100% certainty would do a better job.

Eric Washington coaches the DLine and is the Assistant Head Coach, right? That seems like the most likely scenario for DC to me.

Agree. I believe I posted that earlier today somewhere. Promote from within (assuming there’s a viable candidate) and make Buffalo an attractive landing spot for future coaching prospects who want to advance their careers. Washington seems like a likely fit.

It's the absolute appropriate strategy to have these days.  Now, let me preface this by saying this isn't a judgement on the 2nd amendment, but it is very easy to obtain and carry a firearm.  As a result, you have no idea that the person you are arguing with or fighting with is packing and, as you mentioned, has no real understanding of the consequences of trying to settle an argument with a gun.

I'd bet even money that the shooters in most criminal acts haven't followed protocol by legally obtaining their firearm and carry permit.  The vast majority of people with legally issued carry permits are law-abiding Americans who've been properly trained, and only want to be able to protect their family, themselves, and their property.

Fans have different opinions about the color commentators on NFL broadcasts.  Some like one and dislike another.  Others feel the opposite.

I like Chris Collinsworth.  I like him because he genuinely enjoys watching the games.  He gets excited about plays and about situations.  Does he embellish his excitement sometimes?  I’m sure he does, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t enjoying what he’s seeing.  And he sees the game well.  As soon as a play is done, he often talks about one player who did one particular thing; then the replay comes up and there it is, just as he said.

Sunday night Collinsworth got to call the final game of the 2023 regular season, the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins to decide which team would win the AFC Eastern Division.  He got a great game to watch, full of interesting plays, important plays, big plays, and big mistakes.  He loved it.

Late in the game, Collinsworth said something that was absolutely correct – the game felt every bit like a playoff game.  It was dramatic from the very first play until the final interception.  Every play mattered, and every fan watching knew it mattered.  Everything about the game was at an emotional level higher than Bills-Cowboys, Bills-Eagles, Bills-Chiefs in previous weeks.  It was great football entertainment, and it was the perfect game on which to end the regular season and move into the playoffs.

And, of course, it was a perfect game for the Bills, because they came from nowhere six weeks ago to the number 2 seed in AFC championship bracket.  I loved it.

One play was one of the great plays in Bills’ history:  Deonte Harty’s 96-yard punt return tied the game and gave the Bills the emotional energy to take the lead on their next possession.  And because the game felt just like a playoff game, I will remember that play together with Taron Johnson’s 101-yard interception return against the Ravens in the 2021 Divisional playoffs.

Emotionally, the plays were so similar.  The Bills were leading the Ravens and were trailing the Dolphins, it’s true, but the Ravens were about to score to tie the game, and the Bills had seemed to be going nowhere.  They certainly seemed to be going nowhere against the Dolphins.  As Johnson started out of the end zone, I thought he should have taken the knee and the touchback.  As Harty caught the punt on the four, I thought he should have taken the fair catch.   Then, in both cases, an absolute explosion!  By the time Johnson hit the 20-yardline, and Harty, too, it was a simple footrace.

Both games turned around after those 80-yard dashes.  I knew the Ravens were dead birds after Johnson’s magic, and when the Dolphins went three and out on their next possession, they were dead fish.  Two role players (Johnson hadn't yet emerged as the stud he's become), two game-changing plays, two phenomenal Bills’ wins.

Mike McDaniel is one of those offensive-geniuses we keep hearing about.  He installed some wrinkles in the Dolphin running attack that absolutely tore up the Bills’ in the first half.  Achane, particularly, was running wild, and Collinsworth appreciated every minute of it.  He understood and explained how McDaniel had taken misdirection to a new level, and how it was confusing the Bills.  Still, the Bills’ defense held the Dolphins to two touchdowns in the first half, and the Bills trailed by only 7.

Then Sean McDermott, the other coaching star in the game, took over.  Having watched only from the sideline, and with the help of his assistants, he developed and installed the antidote during half time.  McDaniel’s magic was neutralized, and the Dolphins didn’t sniff the end zone again.  The defense completely smothered the Dolphins in the second half – the run game fizzled, and the offensive line harassed Tua enough to limit the effectiveness of the Dolphin quick passing game.

Josh Allen had just enough to overcome a series of costly mistakes, including a first-half interception and a second-half sack-fumble-turnover.  Still, he was larger than life.  When he got going, running like a man possessed and making multiple pinpoint throws to receivers finding their way into seams, he was Josh Allen at his best.  He’s just so good, running and passing, that he demoralizes the other team.  His play said, “We are not going to lose,” and the Dolphins heard it.

    The playoffs began Sunday night.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were every-day people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full day’s hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

I think Collinsworth does a great job. I don’t understand the hate from some. It was like that for Dierdirf too-another guy in the booth I thought did a fair job.

  16. This is so sad. A wonderful road trip to see his Bills beat the Dolphins ends like this. Hope the investigation finds the shooter.

Part of the reason I've learned restraint is because of the number of crazies out there who think they're in an action movie and will just start discharging a firearm with no regard to consequences.

I used to be the guy who would not back down from confrontation, even if there was a fair chance of getting my azz  beat.  Fortunately, I've had a more sensible wife to calm me down, and I sure don't want her in the middle of anything.  I walk away.

  17. Although I know little about him, the name that keeps coming up on the defensive side of the ball is D line coach Eric Washington. Could he be a 'hire from within' candidate?

Maintaining continuity is a plus. At the same time they'd be putting the word out to other prospective hires that McD rewards his coaching staff when they've earned a promotion.
