Actually I'm all about re-signing Leonard Johnson as the slot guy.

I'm just not sure they'll be able to get EJ to take the deal they feel he's worth, so that makes boundary corner a need.

Now if it were me, I'm looking at a team like Oakland, who has Conley and Carrie starting, and I'm trying to flip them a mid round pick for Amerson--who I think would be a great fit here.

I mention corner in the draft because it's one of the premium positions--the ones where difference-makers can change a team's fortunes.

I'm not much of a draft-for-need guy; I think you take BPA at the premium positions on days 1 and 2.

As for FA, I would be working to re-sign the role players like Cadet, Ryan Davis, the aforementioned Johnson, Humber (as a backup), and perhaps Wright as well.

From there, I'm looking to make a move for a corner and bring in the underrated guys a la Hyde and Poyer. I've mentioned Justin Ellis and Paul Richardson as two that fit the bill, as would Brice Butler from Dallas.

I'd also be watching to see if Baltimore lets Yanda go--he may follow Castillo to Buffalo and shore up the RG spot. Swing Glenn over to RT and you have the makings of quite a formidable front.

Solid plan, ideally who do like at QB and DE through FA and draft? Ideal draft?

    R. Smith won’t be there at 21 unless he gets hurt. I expect a big game from him tomorrow.

I agree he won’t be there, would love it but not probable, watch Rahsaan Evans tomorrow and all the things he does if you didn’t notice in the Clemson game, making defensive calls, blitzing, playing coverage, attacking the run game, field awareness, he’s every bit as good as Smith and does more all around on the field, I’m hoping the league over looks him and the Bills can get him with one of their 1sts.

I appreciate his efforts but I just hated the results. Goodbye Ty....at least I won't have to yell at my TV " throw the damn ball".....anymore

Almost lost my voice today telling him where to throw the ball, just about all game long. End of the game watching him look at the quick out wide open and not throwing it almost cost my TV and Bills Gnomb their lives. Given he actually saw the wide open receiver...

You're putting way too much emphasis on this stuff. You act like he is the whole team. You have to have more than just a QB to be successful. A better QB than Tyrod which he is will make your team better. How many playoff games has Drew Brees won in the last 3 years? How many Super Bowls did Dan Marino win? Those are Hall of Fame QBs that didn't have the extra pieces they needed to make a run but you better believe the Dolphins wouldn't have even had a chance without Marino. He made that team better than it was.

What other assets does Kirk have around him in washington? The defense isn't that great. He lost his two main receivers and his tight end is always hurt and he is still much better than anything we have had the last 15 years. The first step toward a successful franchise is a 4000 yard passer. Once you do that and put the necessary pieces around him then you have a contender

Just to add to the Washington situation, the front office has been a hot mess for years now, the only guy with a clue was canned for "being a alcoholic", and they have been and were a dysfunctional mess. Snyder is clueless and has a habit of putting "yes men" in power, should sound familiar.

  4. Personally, if we could land Cousins, I'd sign him and keep the picks especially if both Buffalo and Kansas City end up with picks in the lower half of the 1st round.  The cost of moving up would be steep and personally I would rather have a QB (I consider Cousins a franchise QB watching him here in VA all the time) and 4 (4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds) more players.

Given Buffalo's current picks, they could package their 2 -1sts and 2 2nds to move up (using the trade value chart) to the 3rd pick w/SF, and their would likely be 2 QB's off the board already, so they would be getting their 3rd choice likely...

IMO: Cousins + 4 picks in the top 64 > 3rd Choice of QB in draft.

    or

Cousins + 4 picks in the top 64 > 4/5/6th QB choice at 18 and 3 more picks in the top 64 or any other combination or moving up and losing picks.

However, I dont see us landing Cousins so....

Knowing what you know now... looking back at the 2017 draft, what do you think the Bills should have done in the 1st round?

As of today its taking Watson and its not close IMO, I get its kind of an incomplete hypothetical situation not knowing what the 1st round pick this year will be or affect in the upcoming draft, but I would gladly trade it and Tre back to KC for the 10th pick and take Watson today, utilizing the omnipotent power of hindsight.  Short sample size, but potential franchise QB who has shown all the tools to be a franchise QB, including accuracy (my biggest knock on him coming out) that IMO he did not display in college.

Should they parlay the extra 2018 1st round pick from the trade into a franchise QB in this draft, or draft one any other way this year, then Tre' and a Franchise QB (whomever it could be) would be the winning combination, but as of today, take the franchise QB and go from there.

I would have loved to see what dealer Doug would have done with all those picks. It would have been epic dealing.

It would have been fun to watch!! Given the current situation.

Just my opinion: Whaley would have stayed at 10 and taken Watson or given his history traded up for Watson (for what and how much? I don't know), whom he supposedly liked a lot. Say he stays at 10 and takes Watson as his "off the bus starter" at QB and the Bills have their "franchise QB", the rest of the 2017 draft plays out as it would (who knows), the 2018 draft rolls around and the Bills have only their natural selections, Watkins, Dareus and Darby are not traded presumably, "dealer Doug" goes into the 2018 draft with a lot of flexibility but less picks, still epic? Hypothetical I know...

That makes 2 of “us”, watched the last UCF game and UCLA, I think he could end up pushing into the top of the draft. He hits his back foot on deep drops and uncorks some beautiful passes, looking forward to watching more myself.

    Here is my list:

    - Star Lotulelei

    - Paul Richardson

    - Andrew Norwell

    - Nigel Bradham

    - Jeremy Hill

    - Kony Ealy

It is a combination of guys that I think fit, we can afford and in many cases guys that McDemott and Beane are familiar with.

    thoughts??

It almost seems like Star makes too much sense to not happen, the Panthers cap situation looks dicey heading into the off-season, Richardson adds the speed element to the receiving core it needs. I like both.

Norwell I would love, he is truely under appreciated league wide and IMO will get a lot more in FA than most would believe, hired D.Rose as his agent in the summer, he's going to be very pricey and is not a perfect fit IMO for the current scheme he can pull but its not his strength, however if a new OC comes in and runs a more power based run scheme (sprinkling in zone runs) he would be a great fit given his age and ability, could start at RG day 1 and be the long term solution at LG or new LG depending on how things play out with Richie over the next year/year+.

Hill and Ealy make sense if they are looking for low cost roster depth. Not personally a big fan of either and Hills ball security issues could rub McD the wrong way, but I could see it. Bradham doesnt seem to fit the staff, but makes sense, I like Tahir Whitehead OLB - Lions more in the SLB role in the McD, I think he's had a good year and would be a solid addition to the Bills D.

I am sure it wont happen but if they could get DeMarcus Lawrence to play LDE via FA, that would be a huge signing, young and instant impact, not sure the Cowboys will be able to keep him and if not IMO he should be there FA priority.

    My FA List  FWIW:

     - Star Lotulelei (NDT)

    - Paul Richardson (SWR)

    - Jonathan Cooper (RG)

    - DeMarcus Lawrence (LDE - Wishes and Dreams...)

    - Orleans Darka (RB)

    - Tahir Whitehead (SLB)

    - Alex Smith (Bridge QB)

    Draft:

QB (Future), ILB, 3DT, RT, TE, S/SS, CB, BPA, BPA

Yep, that scares me too. Those guys were evaluated before they hit FA or were traded.

I have real concerns about the defensive front 7. How many guys there will be starting next year? Hughes, Milano, maybe Shaq? Maybe Kyle?

Re: The Front 7 - I have huge concerns about them myself, Hughes IMO along with Glenn are highly likely to be traded in the off season, Shaq??? He seems more like a rotational guy for McDefense (I do think he's better suited for RE myself), Kyle I think retires but  they might be able to convince to stay 1 more year and is at best a rotational guy, with Washington going into next year, Yarbrough and Davis are rotational depth guys, Alexander should be depth at best, Brown is a gone IMO, and Humber again is really a back up/spot starter.

Crystal Ball Starters - DE - Shaq and Hughes/rookie/FA, DT - Rookie and FA, WLB - Milano/Humber/Rookie, ILB - Rookie, SLB - Rookie/FA/Lacey

    Backups - DE - Yarbrough and Davis/Rookie, DT - Washington/coleman/thorton, Killiams/coleman/thorton/rookie, WLB - Milano/Humber/Rookie, ILB - Vallejo/FA/Rookie, SLB - Alexander/Lacey

This draft is deep at ILB and I think they will find one at this point to start going into next year, but along with QB and OL, the front 7 in general needs to be addressed in the offseason if not as badly, almost as badly QB and OL.

  10. 1 hour ago, GunnerBill said:

My ideal for our first 6 picks is to use no more than two of those on getting a QB and then go 2 OL and 2 DL.

I think LB is just as important a need as OL and DL myself, was wondering your thoughts on the LB need for the Bills and potential options in the off season?

I can understand building from the lines back, makes sense, as does your ideal situation. I think a LB that can start and cover should be in that mix as well, if not two some how.

While the Bills work to remake this roster we rarely see people talk about it. Before anyone says, you can’t do anything with TT, Marquise Goodwin has more yards this year than Matthews, Jones and Benjamin combined for the Bills. He played primarily with Hoyer and Beathard. Romo talked about it during the game on Sunday; the guys don’t get open. As we bring in a rookie QB it would be wise to give him weapons.

Personally I think Matthews stinks, he’s never open and is a limited athlete. Benjamin is a good, not great WR. Zay has been a big disappointment to me because I had high expectations. He just always seems to be off balance. I like Thompson and think that he fills a role. The Bills still need a #1/2 depending on how you define Benjamin.

Would you rather sign someone like Davante Adams, Jarvis Landry, Allen Robinson, Terrelle Pryor, Paul Richardson or Donte Moncrief or draft a guy in the first couple of rounds?

Goodwin also has 70 targets this year (https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GoodMa00.htm), Matthews (36), Jones (68) and Benjamin (7) have a combined 111 targets which is criminal in comparison to Goodwin (stats per pro-football-reference.com), Goodwin has more targets individually than any of them and therefor more opportunity, Hoyer and Beathard are not elite QB's, but like Kyle Orton was here, they are capable pocket passers who can read the field somewhat and make anticipatory throws or understand where the ball needs to go, which is going to help with the "production" many members of this board are over infatuated with IMO.

TT is not a pocket passer by any stretch of the imagination much less in reality, and I think he has improved this year vs. last year in utilizing the whole field more, he is still limited, therefor the WR production will always be limited with him at QB as well.

Matthews has always been a big slot who is a capable zone buster and height mis-match on smaller slot CB's, he's never been a #1 or #2 WR who can beat man coverage or threaten the deep field, nor has he ever gotten separation via athletic ability. Basically he's a possession receiver who needs  or to use his football IQ to find holes in zones and is reliant upon a QB who can read the field and get him the ball based upon coverage, which is not TT. When there is no legitimate threat at QB or at WR around him, coverage is easier for the D and he is essentially useless in Buffalo, vs. what he was and who was the QB in Philly or who he would be playing for say NO. If they get a QB who has pocket passing skills, he could still be "productive" and useful here this year if Peterman shows anything. I suspect like R. Woods he'll get more money to play else where with a passing QB and his "production" will return.

Benjamin can be the #1 here and I agree a Good WR, he creates problems for defenses but for all the flak Watkins received for being injury prone, Benjamin has missed 7 more games in his 4 years in the league and has less "production" and like Matthews is too slow and does not have the athletic ability to make lateral cuts and create separation, IMO he's a complimentary WR2 ideally, who is obviously a size mismatch for any DB and his catching radius and physicality make him a low end #1.

I think Zay needed some time to adjust, and have hopes that he can be a #1 in time, which was what I projected him to be. He's learning and I think next year he'll make a big jump as he continues to adjust, keeps running better routes, I think the ability to make cuts and create separation is there. I like Thompson a lot my self and think there is a role for hi, m here.

Currently there is little separation, but I have seen WR's "NFL" open at times on the TV broadcasts, and have not seen much of the 22 this year to confirm or deny confidently, but it would not surprise. I do think however that they have set up the WR core for the future with Benjamin and Jones being there #1 and #2 interchangeably and both have the ability to work out of the slot. Thompson I like as a fill it starter if needed, deep threat and role playing #3, Matthews I think is gone so I think B. Reilly, M. Dupre, and or Rookie to fill in the gaps. Of the guys you mentioned (most are lateral or less appealing #2's IMO), Landry could fill in the slot role (gap 1) for the new QB, but I dont see them spending much to fill that role, I think they need a speed guy (gap 2) and the only one I see is Richardson, so its him or a rookie like your boy P. Campbell.

    WR1 - Benjamin or Jones

    WR2 - Jones or Benjamin

    WRslot - Reilly/rookie/Thompson

    WRspeed - Thompson/ Rookie (Campbell)/Richardson (FA)

WR - Swiss Army Knife/Gaps - Thompson, Dupre, Rookie

IMO this would give the new QB a real chance to develop and have weapons to utilize and grow with.

It's not changing the subject.  It's simply putting this into perspective.

I'm interested in the reactions of fans to certain things.

We have people calling for Gronk to be suspended into the playoffs.  That's 5 games at a minimum.

This is the same league that gave Zeke Elliott 6-games for beating up a defenseless woman.  The most, I believe, for a domestic abuser.

And, somehow, people think Gronk's hit on White is almost as bad?  I'm sorry, but I disagree.

I'm also sorry that you're so angry about this.

I hope you can find some happiness in your day.

What separates or differentiates the act of a man hitting a defenseless woman and a man "assaulting" a defenseless man?

Head injuries are extremely serious, helmet or not. In a way it is worse than a stabbing because the damage is not immediately apparent. That being said unless the injury is truly serious I don’t expect Gronk to be charged, in the same way that a drunk driver who slams into an empty street corner won’t be charged with manslaughter because of pure luck that no pedestrians were in his way. But if it turned out to be a serious injury there is a very real criminal case here.

Time will tell the seriousness of the injury/impairment and may/may not have an effect on potential outcomes, but the brain clearly is defined as an organ, weapon/dangerous instrument was certainly used even using his 270 pound body could be classified as a dangerous weapon, even if its a metal brace and he used his body to add to the impact there certainly is a criminal case here regardless. It was after the play, it has nothing to do with sports or playing through the whistle, or "he held me." which even for Gronk unreasonable and stupid. Legally, there is a case here, I doubt anything will come of it in that regard.

As for the NFL, while I dont recall the specifics this is not the first time this year I have watched a game and been amazed that someone wasnt ejected for something  flagrantly similar to this, the officials should have ejected Gronk on the spot (SECTION 3 - UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT - If the infraction is flagrant, the player is also disqualified. NFL RULEBOOK), if not "NY" should have called since they watch everything at the league office and let the officials know he needs to be ejected. If this does not result in a lengthy suspension, the NFL has lost me and all their "we care" about head injuries, and player safety talk. This was as deliberate an attempt to injure another player as I have seen.

  14. Seems similar to me of the Bertuzzi/Moore situation in some regards, but Gronk needs to be suspended, if they wanted to the Erie County DA could easily prosecute this case IMO.

FWIW, NYS Law on intentional assault with a dangerous instrument (viewed as I see it the same as a "weapon".)

    NY Penal Law Article 120:

S 120.05 Assault in the second degree.
A person is guilty of assault in the second degree when:
        1. With intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, he
causes such injury to such person or to a third person; or
        2. With intent to cause physical injury to another person, he causes
such injury to such person or to a third person by means of a deadly
weapon or a dangerous instrument; or
    4. He recklessly causes serious physical injury to another person by
means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument; or
Assault in the second degree is a class D felony.

This is from a legal website: https://newyorklegaldefense.com/practice-areas/violent-crimes/new-york-assault-defense-lawyers/

Assault in the second degree can be charged where “serious physical injuries” resulted from the assault, and the assault was carried out with the intent of causing such injuries.  The law defines “serious physical injuries” as “a physical injury which creates a substantial risk of death, or which causes death or serious protracted disfigurement, protracted impairment of health or protracted loss or impairment of any bodily organ.” (NY Penal Law 10.00(10)).  A cut or bruise would not qualify as a serious physical injury, but a broken bone would.

Assault in the second degree can also be charged where a “deadly weapon” or “dangerous instrument” is used.  A dangerous instrument is defined broadly at NY Penal Law 10.00(13) to include any object that could be used to cause serious physical injury.  The use of the object does not need to actually cause a “serious physical injury.”  If a person intends to cause a physical injury and causes even a minor physical injury with a weapon, they are guilty of second degree assault.

    http://www.nycourts.gov/judges/cji/2-PenalLaw/cji3.shtml

    1. That on or about 11/4/2017(date) , in the county of Erie(county) , the defendant, "Gronk"(defendant's name) , caused physical injury to Tre'Davious White(specify) by means of a deadly weapon [or dangerous instrument]; and 2. "Mature beyond his years" was the phrase used when introducing him to the Bills fans. Who would have thought Marquise Goodwin might outproduce him this year.

Pre draft process I was very impressed with his interviews, IMO it was after the draft he stepped back a little in the maturity department, expectations, money, fame, $h!tt¥ QB play will hAve their effects I’m guessing...

As for Goodwin, yes he has more yards and 20 more targets, which contrary to many folks on this boards personal beliefs has an effect on “production”, Watkins is +4 in the TD department and has 1 more reception at this point so it will be interesting to see how they finish up the season.
