  1. I think Rex most likely runs the overall operation fine, and he has an excellent staff. I think the discipline or lack of comes from trying to be a players' coach, wanting to be their buddy, and his bloviating. He also is not a good game-day HC.

:huh::huh::huh: Danny Crossman and Dennis Thurman are not good at their jobs and holdovers from his Jets staff like Sanjay Lal and David Lee should not been brought over imo, Rex is way too loyal to guys who haven't contributed to a winning team in recent years for him.

  2. You do realize that Rex's defenses have all but 1 been in the top 10 before this year? The one year he was before this year his defense was 11th.

Before last year Schwartz never had a top 10 defense.

That said I feel strongly that whoever the DC is that is calling plays in and making adjustments has to make a significant improvement over this year.

2011: Jets had solid rushing and passing yards per game despite how poorly the team played, but they were 20th in points per game.

2012: Jets were 20th in points per game and 26th rush yards per game, their great pass yards per game ranking made them a top 10 team overall when really it was a above average defense

2013: 22nd in pass yards per game and 19th in points per game, this time it is the opposite their great rush yards per game rankings gave them a top 11 ranking when it really was a above average defense

2014: Surprisingly, Jets had solid rushing and passing yards per game despite how poorly the team played, but they were 24th in points per game, probably not on Rex's defense so I'll will give him a pass on this season.

Schwartz D 2014 rankings: 4th in points per game, 11th in rush yards per game, and 3rd in pass yards per game, so across the board Buffalo had a top end defense, something Rex's teams in New York and now Buffalo did not in recent years. There was no way regardless how Rex boasted that he would improve on these numbers, in fact I'm not sure Schwartz could either. But, at least if Schwartz had stayed the Defensive numbers would have stayed in the top ten in most category unlike Rex's defense.

Rex Buffalo D 2015 rankings: 23rd in pass yards per game, 15th in rush yards per game, and 16th in points per game, overall big drop in pass yards per game, not much of a drop in rush yards per game, and decent drop in points per game. Rex's D obviously had a difficult transition for the Buffalo D, but overall recently it has proven to be a very above average defense where either the run or pass yards are great, but it tends to allow points and it's not a completely strong D. So, I expect next year's numbers to improve, but I don't expect a top ten especially the numbers Schwartz's D posted

  3. This is the entire problem in a nutshell. Rex is seemingly incapable of doing just that. What a HC needs to do first and foremost: focus more on being a head coach and overseeing game day operations. There is enough history on him to cast doubt that he could ever develop this skill set. But now I hope he does.

Biggest reason why I hated that him and Schwartz could not have co-existed, if he allowed Schwartz to run his D with minimal input at times, I think they would've at least been position for Sunday's game to be win and you are in. It also would allow Rex to focus on in-game coaching strategy and decision-making, which seems to be Rex's big problems which I don't see improving anytime soon.

  4. Pettine coming back as his DC makes sense to me. They can improve on the bit of success the defense had in 2013. I think he's a good motivator and teacher.

He's safe in Cleveland, if Dennis Thurman is allowed to Rex's puppet DC then I see next season going nowhere as this season. It's clear Rex needs to not call the plays and needs to focus more on being head coach overseeing the game day operation.

  5. All I'm going to say is that if Whaley is indeed fired or decides to leave, the Bills might as well fire Rex as well, no new GM will want any part of Rex after that fiasco with the Jets with Idzik. So most likely both are staying in 2016 when the team tanks into the oblivion, then who knows at that point.

  6. The reason this team never gets anywhere is because they blow it up every 2-3 years. Now, after 1 season with a new HC and D-system they're going to blow EVERYTHING up again?

It takes time, let them build the defense the way Rex wants it, I'm OK with giving them another couple of years to fill in the pieces. Blowing it up is the wrong move IMO, they're not that far away.

BIll Belichick was 5-11 with NE his first year as their HC, what if they blew it up? They won the Super Bowl the second year.

:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: Rex is not a good head coach period and it's clear that the game has passed him by. No amount of shuffling players and trying to get players that fit his scheme will change that. Might as well cut your losses now becuase they is no way the Bills win more that 6 games next season with Rex Ryan next season

  7. I was optimistic when Marrone left because of the good defense and then the spending on offense. But the Rex Ryan hire really disappointed me and dampened my expectations, for the reasons that have played out. I was surprised that other Bills fans bought into him so enthusiastically (I wanted Lovie Smith or Jim Schwartz). Hope triumphing over experience?

The lack of a top QB and OL have been constants since Kelly retired, but I would argue that a more important element in the Bills persistent mediocrity has been coaching. We've had just one head coach in this era worthy of the title, and that was Chan Gailey, who was given a weak hand, did a lot with it and fired too soon by a skittish front office. The rest have been shite. We might have the worst of all in Ryan, for the reasons posters have been repeating here. He brings nothing valuable to the table and has cost the team dearly. Since "he can't be fired!" we will have lost yet ANOTHER five years waiting for him to get done failing and giving yet another coach enough time to prove himself.

And so it goes around and around and around. We'll be having a similar conversation in 2020.

Yep, at that point the Bills will have the longest playoff drought in NFL history and will have missed the playoffs altogether in the 2000s and 2010s  . Hopefully, the next coach after Rex will be the guy to bring the franchise back to prominence or that you are wrong about that assessment.

  8. Honestly last year team hurt more than this year's team, if Whaley had been more aggressive in finding a competent backup QB last season in free agency, no doubt the Bills would've made the playoffs. Despite Marrone's mediocre coaching especially on the offense front, the defense especially down the stretch really played well when everybody as healthy. This year honestly in my view is just validation that Rex Ryan was a terrible hire to begin with, there was a reason the Ravens passed up on him for Harbaugh and there is a reason Jets got worse under his tenure. The undisciplined and unfocused play along with Rex not utilizing his talent properly is stuff all Jets fans and writers complained about with him.

  9. I wonder how many other Head Coaches report to the owner.....not to many I am guessing. (maybe Bellicheck) Reason we have it....a light weight GM....Rex (and many other coaching candidates) would not agree to report to Whaley. I think the whole thing either needs to be blown up at the top....and bring in a football guy to run it....or, take a chance and see if Whaley can grow up fast and hire his own coach. I think the Pegs bought Rex line of BS....great interview, meh coach.

This sounds ridiculous, It's pretty sure Pegulas really bought into Rex and his reputation as a defensive guru hence they have him direct reporting to them, as nothing to do with Whaley in that regard. If they hired Hue Jackson, do you think he would get the same type of leeway.

  10. You, young man.. or young girl.. need to get a grip.

    1. The only reason the Bills are in Bflo to make you upset is because of TP.

    2. If you expect instant NFL winnings because of one season of changes... you are wrong.

It's premature at this point to be raging at TP or RR. For context: Belicheck was 5-11 his first season with the Patsys.

I said in my post that I'm glad the Pegulas are keeping the Bills in Buffalo. In fact, what is happening right now is what I'm expecting because I was against the Ryan hire from the start. Jets fans criticized him for not utilizing his challenges and terrible in-game adjustments and situation awareness and he has not improved on either aspect. He also took a good defense last year and made in worse particularly not using the D-Line when they were healthy to this potential. Rex is a not a good coach, let's not pretending at this point, we have nearly 5 seasons of evidence of that and Pegulas should've done their research on Rex Ryan before they hired him.

  11. Anytime your owners are involved with hiring anyone except for the executive VP in charge of football operations, it is a huge mistake. They shouldn't be involved with the interviewing or have any say in the hiring/firing of a GM/personnel guys/coaches. NONE.

Thank you that was my whole point. I blame that on inexperience, hopefully they understand that you must empower your football personnel to make decisions, now do some of the decision for them. Hopefully they get a President of Football Operations along with Whaley in the offseason moving forward and allow them to make the personnel moves.

  12. As much as I like the fact the Pegulas bought the team and are committed to keep the team in Buffalo. As owners I have not been impressed with them as owner. I know I know, they have only been owners for a year, but the biggest decision they have made so far was hiring Rex Ryan. The sheer fact that they were ones that hired him personally instead of allowing Whaley and the other football personnel do it is just the type of hand-on approach that a constant criticism of the Ralph Wilson era. Pegula made a similar mistake early in his Sabres tenure instead of letting go the Reiger/Ruff regime, he lets the stick around and the Sabres collapse and are now re-building. I'm not saying the Pegulas are bad owners, I'm just questioning their ability to trust their football personnel and empower them instead of stepping on their shoes and making executive decision without their input.
