  1. I'm not sure I agree that Roman is the right guy, but everyone deserves at least two seasons to get their system in place and rolling.

We had some nice surprises this year with Karlos, Darby etc., but the worst surprise was that Mario Williams is really off his game and we were counting on him to have another pro bowl season.

Rex or no Rex, it's the NFL and you win with getting pressure from only 4 guys, and Mario beat virtually nobody this year out there. You can't pin that on a scheme or a coach, because in the VAST majority of plays, Mario's job is to simply play DE, rush the passer/stop the run. The same as Pettine and Schwartz had him doing, only this year he's been neutralized consistently, sometimes by backups with no help.

We lost Wynn before the season began, and basically had only Jerry Hughes to get after the QB. He's done well, but he can't do it alone.

I guess my biggest frustration right now is with people calling for Rex to be fired. Our defense is struggling because our players aren't executing, it's not the system. Whaley is gonna need to deliver the perfect offseason with releasing certain players and signing/drafting new ones.

I disagree. Watching the series when Washington scored their 5th touchdown, I spotted three plays where Hughes lined up in three different positions.

On his sack, Hughes was lined up with his hand down in a wide-9 DE position, which means he was lined up outside the LT. This gave him space to show his explosive quickness and he use his speed to overpower the tackle to get the sack. This was his alignment in Schwartz's defense, when he registered 10 sacks and caused havoc the entire season.

Later in the drive on 3rd and 6, he was lined up at Left OLB. Why? Who knows. Duke Williams blitzed, Hughes dropped into coverage, and Cousins completed the pass to Hughes' side for the first down. Why would you drop your best pass rusher into coverage on a passing down while blitzing a mediocre safety? It's a decision of scheme over player strength.

On a first down later in the drive, Hughes was lined up with his hand on the ground, OVER THE GUARD. He's only giving up around 80 lbs in that matchup, so it makes sense, right?. It was a running play, Hughes got crushed, and the RB gained the edge and ran through a Preston Brown tackle for the first down. Brown also got a PF penalty. Again, line Hughes up wide and let him crash the LT to hold the edge, and that run gets turned inside.

So three plays, two of which it could be argued that Hughes was not put in position to succeed. The same thing can be said for Mario. These guys have the speed and strength to rush the passer and hold the edge when they are aligned outside the tackles. That gives them one or two free steps to explode into the backfield. They offer diminishing returns when you align them directly over the tackle (or the freakin' guard). They are basically useless when you drop them into coverage.

This is what Mario is complaining about, and it's what we should be complaining about too. At the very least, on passing downs, both Mario and Hughes should be lined up outside the tackles. Instead, Rex has them dropping into coverage and is blitzing Duke Williams? It's idiotic. It's a total lack of situational awareness, and it's the main reason for the poor play of the defense this season.

  2. Make tweaks, not wholesale changes.

Whaley AND Rex both stay, and they work on improving their process and relationship. I think bringing in a Czar to make sure Rex and Whaley stay in their lanes would be wise, as Pegula is not a football mind.

Bring in the players needed to fully implement the 3-4 they want to do. Mario and Kyle should be gone. Need to find playmaking LB and S, need a true NT.

Need a #2 WR so that our offense is not reliant on HRs to Sammy or McCoy busting one.

Need a RT, and drafting best OL available would be wise in the early rounds b/c we need depth across the board here. Wood is average.

Next training camp the focus is not focused on installing the scheme, but on details and fundamentals and not taking penalties.

They're going to need to do more than that. In addition to the 4 players you mention they need to add on defense (LE, ILB, S, NT), they need to re-sign Gilmore and decide if they need to add another OLB.

On the offensive line, in addition to RT, they have to make a decision on Glenn and Incognito. If they decide not to re-sign these two to premium contracts, they have to replace 3 offensive line positions, to add to sketchy starters Wood and Miller.

When you add the #2 WR, we're now talking about 10 positions that need to be upgraded or resigned. And we're not even talking about the QB yet.

6 of those positions are on the defense, mostly necessary because of Rex's defense (it can be argued that if they move back to a 4-3, wide 9, they need to restructure Mario's contract and add a run-stopping MLB).

In other words, if Rex stays, there will be no way to add the quality personnel needed to fully implement his scheme in time to make the playoffs next season. It's even unlikely that they would be able to add the right players two years from now to make the playoffs.

  3. Have to give him 3-4 years. Starting new each year is nuts.

Conversely, holding onto the wrong guy for 3-4 years is also nuts (see Jauron).

Sure Kyle Williams is probably near the end of his career, but are we seriously discussing rebuilding a defensive front 7 that had 60 sacks last season? This most likely will require 2 to 3 years, which will probably push the playoff drought to 18 or 19 years. And do you trust Rex, with his recent track record to even pull this off?

The real question is what does Rex bring to the team. Is he able to take this team to the playoffs (which probably means beating the Patriots at least once), and ultimately, can he take a team to the Super Bowl.

I don't think he has it in him. Bowles is doing better with Rex's personnel from last year. Schwartz did better with Rex's current personnel last season. Put Rex in a room with those two guys, and he's the worst coach in the room.

3 or 4 years of Rex most likely means 19 to 20 years of no playoffs.

It's a hard decision, but the last thing Pegula should be concerned about is this unwritten rule that changing the front office frequently is insane. The pragmatic rule is that you change the front office until you find the right people. There has been more than enough evidence this season that Rex and his group are not the right people to lead the Bills anywhere close to the playoffs.

  4.

Not even remotely accurate. Buffalo only team to go to 4 in a row. No one has made it to 5, much less 10. Lions currently match the Bills for ineptitude, not having made the playoffs since 1999. They are pretty much eliminated already for this year to boot, so they should match the Bills. I wouldn't recommend citing statistical quotes that are nothing more than exaggerations than actual statistics.

Lions made the playoffs last season. Lost to Dallas. The Bills own this mind-boggling streak.

  5. I hold Rex responsible for the lack of discipline. But the scheme change was what it was. You hire Rex Ryan and he is going to run his defense.

So we added all these weapons but lost

Mario, Dareus, and Kyle Williams. None of these players look good in the Rex scheme but you can't ask Rex to coach something he doesn't want to coach.

Only good news is that Mario and Kyle were on their way out anyway so no point in demanding a 4-3 scheme next year. Move Dareus to DE, get a NT. Get another inside linebacker with size and speed. Draft a safety early.

And watch the playoff drought extend to 20 years...

  6. I don't think Suh could have body slammed Taylor in that play even if he wanted to. He had no leverage due to his grip being too high and Taylor's momentum drove drove him through Suh's attempted tackle. Taylor's progress was altered, but it wasn't stopped.

Usually in the grasp occur while the QB is going down and tries to throw the ball away. Taylor is not going down in this circumstance, so the refs gave him the opportunity to make a play.

  7. Can we quit criticizing " the system" or whatever ? Rex Ryan's defense demands being smart and doing your job. He may just have to realize he has too many undisciplined free lancers that do not play smart. They play dumb consistently , and must be purged. He's stuck with them for this year, so he may just need to be more aggressive up front because the back seven often cannot be trusted . His system should work, and its not about square pegs. It's about a whole bunch of guys that consistently have played dumb out of control football for years, but were compensated for by the lines talent. All his system has done is expose the frauds on this D for what they are. I don't think that's on Rex. He expected some smarts to go with the talent on this D and too many guys don't play with any of the former. So keep giving these charlatans a pass and blame coaches and systems. Today made it obvious too anyone watching what was going on. I know they won, but that was some horrendous D being played save for a monster play or two ,

Ok, just what was the count for DLs dropping in coverage today? I honestly don't know. I do know I saw a lack of discipline by the LBs and some DB's that was a much bigger problem as their over pursuit and poor angles as a result led to huge gains. Let's just give those guys a pass though and yell about some coaches.

Dumping the players who set a team record in sacks, produced a high number of turnovers and finished in the top 5 last season will be a time-consuming and costly exercise.

The easy solution is to match up the current skills of the players to the scheme that best utilizes those skills. This is on Rex. He can fix this tomorrow, but his ego won't let him do the right thing.

  8. Anyone who blames the defense for the loss today needs to have their head examined. I mean, really? Did you not watch the game. The defense was very good today, IMO. Hell, I even thought Rambo/Williams held their own. Finally got pressure on the QB.

Up 4 with 3 minutes left, Jags (the freakin' Jags?!?!?!) needing to go 80+ yards to win the game? You wouldn't have taken that scenario all day long before the game started?

The defense blew it. We all know who EJ is: 3 horrible plays: 1 good play. But this defense was supposed to be elite, and it's nowhere close.

  9. The Bills roster is good enough that they can be down 7-8 starters, and still beat the Jags? And they are good enough to overcome blown calls by the officials? It is hard to win in the NFL- especially when you are decimated and going against the refs

My guess is that if you asked Ryan if he would take a scenario where his team is up by 4 with 3 minutes left and his defense was on the field, he'd take it every time. That penalty was horrible, but the Bills still led, with Rex's defense on the field to hold it. He and his defense failed. It was a chance to pull the Bills out of a bad situation with two weeks to heal.

Because of this failure, the Bills have to go 7-2 the rest of the season to get to 10-6 (probably the record needed for the playoffs).

  10. This is NOT on the defense

It is on a QB who spotted them 2 touchdowns (literally) in the 1st half

Right, that 9 minute drive to start the second half was on the QB. Good thing the Jags are too stupid to put Yeldon in their short yardage package, or they would have ended the game right there. Nice half-time adjustments Rex, even though they stopped the Toby Gerhardt show, it still cost them at least two drives with the time the Jags ate.

And then when EJ stumbled into a lead (because, again, it's the Jags), all the D had to do was hold the Jags on downs. No dice. Game in the hands of Rex and his vaunted D, they failed.

How many QBs do you have to watch destroy Ryan's defenses before you realize what a fraud his schemes are. Brady, okay. Eli Manning, eh maybe. Dalton, c'mon now. Bortles? Give me a f'n break.

EJ is what he is. But Ryan is supposed to be a defensive mastermind. The Bills talent on defense is supposed to be top notch. When are they going to prove it on the field?

  11. The problem is the head coach, pure and simple. Look what he has done with a top 5 defense. Look at what the Jets are doing without him.

I'm with you. He ran his big mouth talking about having the greatest defense of all time, but when the chips were down facing Blake Bortles to close out the game, his defense turned into a folding chair. EJ sucks. EJ should not be an NFL QB. But the Bills had the lead at the end of the game. Rex's defense blew it. The PI call was a joke, but the Bills still had the lead after it was made.

This is on Rex and the defense.

  12. Have to come to grips that the team I love plays horrible, undisciplined, stupid football. At least last season, we could look forward to watching the defensive line play. We don't even have that anymore, thanks to our blowhard, fraud of a coach and his outdated schemes. I'm sure that Rex will be given the mandatory, excuse-filled two years to try to prove he's an NFL caliber coach, even though there's ample evidence that he's not. At least we have the draft to look forward to. So let's fire up the threads to talk about the great players that the Bills won't draft, as they reach for a safety that fits Rex's idiotic schemes.
