Sit his ass for a series to make the point if needed, Josh can’t be so “ignorant” as to purposefully put the entire team’s future in jeopardy, and that’s how you put It to him,  he will learn. It’s good that his Boss is driving this point home.

That's not happening. He's the most powerful person in the Bills organization outside of the owners.

Yep. McD is a good defensive coach, and this takes away any delegating blame.  If it goes well, he buys a little more respect from the fans and he'll have a full offseason to make a quality DC happen, before meats picked off the bones.

But so help me God, if that happens and Leslie comes back, this place will melt dooooooown

If it goes well we may see a DC named, but I would think McDermott would continue to call the plays.

Then this makes the Frazier hiring and the entire last 5 years absolutely confusing and a seemingly huge management misalignment.

Crazy he couldnt influence Frazier to do that even a little bit then.

I truly hope we see that.

Although I do wonder how much of that came due to pressure from Reid being used to Jim Johnson, and the aggressive D background of Ron Rivera. Even stranger that he wouldnt carry that over to Frazier.

I guess we'll see! I'm here for it either way.

McDermott stated over and over and over again that it was Frazier's defense and playcalling. The only thing I see here is you were convinced it was McDermott's defense all along and can't come to grips that it wasn't. They call a totally different defense from each other. Like I said we will see next year, especially come playoff time, if we are better on that side of the ball or not. By far my biggest worry, now that Frazier is gone, is the OC not the DC.

The Tampa 2 is intrinsically one of the softest D schemes out there.

It did ok in 2015 when Cam was lighting it up on the way to an MVP season and they could pin their ears back after taking early leads.

Hoping for the same from Josh/Dorsey this year to help out.

What do you think he ran in Carolina when he had Keuchly in the same role as Edmunds?

    We run a Cover 2/Tampa 2.

This was "MCD's Defense" he brought from Carolina and enlisted Frazier to call as his proxy. What else could he have ran in Carolina?

His base defense was actually cover 3. He did run some cover 2, cover 4 & covet 6 with a little cover 1 mixed in. 4-3 base defense with under front and mixes in over. Also might see some wide 9 from him.

The thing he did was switch up the defense week to week, both in Philly and Carolina. I can't remember the article I read, but I believe it was a game against Peyton Manning he used 9 different defenses during the game to confuse him.

    Offense, offense, offense.

Yes, it's good to have an Offensive genius on your team, and Teams will promote the top innovative OCs to HC in order to have that talent in house.

But we're talking soft-ass Tampa 2 Defense for our HC.

Forgive me for being less than thrilled with the idea.

He didn't run a soft Tampa 2 defense in Carolina, why would he start now? It’s literally the biggest reason why I'm excited that he's taking over. We will see a far more aggressive approach. Your outrage should be saved for our OC.

I've said all over this thread that I can kinda appreciate it from that accountability stand point.

I HATE that it has had to come to that point tho.

I also think that being the plan all along is a BAD PLAN. Even if you disagree with that opinion. Your red X's have no power here!

You HATE it, I LOVE it. We'll see who's right come playoff time.

It works on with Offense sometimes, sure. Not historically with Defense.

To the bold, THAT is exactly one of the things he is being paid millions of dollars as a HC to figure out.

Not having a replacement/improvement ready is mismanagement.

Unless it was his plan all along to take over the playing once Frazier left. Who says Frazier wasn't forced out so McDermott could take over. If it's reached this point and my butt is on the line and I'm more than qualified to do so, I'm calling the plays.

Thank you for digging that up. Yeah, not a great list when it comes to D coaches. Belichick is an entire different breed, and McD is no BB.

I do think it could change too. Hence, why I pointed out McDs coach-speak of "the current plan". That could literally change tomorrow.

    Thanks again, good stuff.

    That's the problem.

As leader of my team at work, I need to be the ultimate decision maker and see the bigger picture, but I absolutely hire people smarter than me in their specific field and often tell them "If it ends up with ME pressing the keys, then we've gone horribly wrong".

    Well, McD is pressing keys.

Former coordinators calling plays as a HC has been going on forever. That's 100% a non factor. Who is he hiring that's proven to be a better DC than he was in Carolina?

    1. Bill Belichick
    2. Todd Bowles
    3. Dennis Allen
    4. DeMeco Ryans is probably going to call the plays in Houston

Outside of BB, not the best list. It must be noted that this might not work, and it would not be unheard of for this to change before week 1. He has someone on the defensive staff that has called plays in the NFL before so a change could happen after he sees how it goes in the preseason. Brian Daboll intended to call the plays in NY, but ended up handing that to Kafka.

It shouldn't change before the season imo. McDermott is the best defensive mind on the coaching staff.

I'm as skeptical as anyone that McDermott has the bandwidth to take this on, but give the guy credit from an accountability perspective.

If the D crumbles again in the post-season, it's 100% on him.  No excuses.

I'm not skeptical at all. It's how he made a living before becoming a HC and he was very good at it. I think we see a more aggressive defense this year, which from what we've seen on this board over the last few months, is exactly what fans have been begging for.

IF a blue jersey touched the ball as it went out of bounds it is a Moot point. But I thought there was a smalll amount of time left on the clock. I wasn't sure HOW they decided the game was indeed over. I will say the foul preceding when the Aztec went to the line was a clear foul by the Creighton player.

The Creighton player also may have stepped over the line before he released the ball on the throw in. Either way I agree there appeared to be either .2 or .3 seconds left when the ball hit out of bounds. Strange call to end it, but it wouldn't have changed the result of the game.

    Would you be?

So the NFL average for rushing yards last season was 2059.  The Bills were #9 with 2232, and many of us regard that as a number in need of improvement or at least, as holding constant with fewer yards coming from Allen.

So if Harris rushes for 700 yds and Cook for 800, where are the other 732 gonna come from?

Allen rushed for 762 yds last season and 763 in 2021.

I'd personally like to see him go back towards 2020 and 2019, when he rushed for 421 and 520, respectively, and ~1 attempt less per game.

The 1,500 yards would still be about 100 yards higher than Singletary, Cook, Moss & Hines combined for last year. Add even a 10 yards per game average from Hines and 50 yards or so from the WR position(McKenzie had 55 this past year) and you're just about where you would like Allen's rushing totals to be while matching last year's rushing total.

They won’t.  That does them no good. Same way the Texans  eventually traded Watson.

Sure it does. They appear to be worried about how Lamar's body is going to hold up long term. That's why they only offered a 3 year contract that was fully guaranteed. They can tag him this year and next, get 2 of those 3 years they offered and then be done with him. If Lamar doesn't come off his $270 million guarantee stance, that's what I would do. Unless of course a team is willing to pay the 2 1st round picks for him.

  15.

Not surprising. Buffalo has brought in a bunch of players that became mainstays here. Hyde, Poyer, Beasley, Brown, Diggs, Morse. Hughes was already here & played for 4 of those 5 years.

Looking over tne list one thing is for certain..being in the top 10 or bottom 10 doesn't dictate success or failure. There's a mixed bag in both groups.
