  1. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/how-davis-webb-has-become-the-most-intriguing-qb-prospect-in-the-nfl-draft/

Admittedly... I have been a Davis Webb fan since a few weeks before the Senior Bowl when I started watching youtube of the QB prospects. He excited me most out of all the guys as having the highest ceiling ( Kizer being a close second).

(I did my own chart based on watching 3 games a piece for the various qbs.. see below)

    HDeE5JA.png

This article touches on several of the things that were very obvious positive traits that I saw.. namely

    + ARM STRENGTH
AGGRESSIVE APPROACH.. CONSISTENTLY LOOKS TO GO DEEP FIRST
    THROWS INTO TIGHT WINDOWS

One of the biggest knocks you hear is " Great Arm but Air Raid QBs don't translate to the NFL". This article challenges that notion ...

    • coach's son,
    • has his own playbook he's developed over the years for future coaching gig, r
    • ran Friday team offensive meetings instead of the coach

After reading this article I think the Air Raid knock on him is short-sided and is likely not a well informed criticism.

The biggest thing he is behind on is taking drops and developing good footwork from under center as he was exclusively shotgun. If he can overcome this I think he will be the best QB of this class when the smoke clears.

    Thoughts?

  2. See my overall qb rankings below... based on watching 3 games for each qb (click to maximize)

I really like Webb. He's not perfect.. but he has several "best in class" traits to my eye

    BEST IN CLASS

    - ARM STRENGTH - his throwing motion literally looks like he is throwing darts. He has the strength to drive the ball to any part of the field

    - AGGRESSIVENESS - he is not afraid to put the ball into tight windows. He also consistently attacks the intermediate areas without fear. According to PFF when measuring Deep Passing.. Webb had the highest number of attempts, yards and TDs when throwing deep. His completion percentage on deep balls was low.. however.. he had 18 TDS and 5 TDs when attempting to throw deep.. which tells me that he is taking smart chances. It also tells me he looks to go deep first rather than to check down.

    - ACCURACY - when he is on the same page and trusts his receivers he does a fantastic job of leading his guy or putting it in a spot where only WR can get it.

    - HEIGHT/VISION - his height allows him to see over the line to any part of the field

    - DEEP BALL -- He's not afraid to take shots deep and I saw several nice examples of well thrown deep sideline balls.

    - TOUGHNESS - I saw several examples of him hanging in the pocket an extra half second, delivering the throw and taking the big hit.

    WEAKNESSES

    - UNDER CENTER EXPERIENCE - He was out of shotgun almost 100% of the time .. so adjusting to a pro style under center offense and 3,5,7 step drops will likely take a while. His footwork wasn't too bad for a shotgun guy.. but he did get sloppy sometimes. It is also unknown if he can make NFL reads as he played in air raid offense. However.. I have read that he comes across as very smart and is dedicated to football.. so it seems he has the capacity and desire to learn.

    - DECISION MAKING - He had an up an down season. The 2 games I watched at the beginning of the year he was decisive and fantastic. The game towards the end of the year I watched he was more hesitant and threw some bad picks and errant throws.

    - MOBILITY - for a guy of his height he has functional mobility. He's not a statue .. but he will never be a real running threat that the D will have to account for

    CONCLUSION

    • The 2 guys that I think have the highest ceilings are Kizer and Webb. Out of the two... Webb is probably farthest behind as far as being prepared to start year 1.
    • That being said.. I think he is worth taking in Round 2 for a team that has an established starter where he can sit and learn for a year

    FIT FOR BUFFALO?

    • If Matt Schaub (who was not a running qb) could run Kubiak's (Dennison"s) offense effectively.. certainly Davis Webb could learn to do it.
    • As the Bills have TT in place as a Vet Starter.. they would be a perfect place for Webb to come in and sit and learn.
    • He would be great competition for Cardale (who I also like). If he ends up beating out Cardale for the #2 job then so be it.
    • What I don't want is a vet backup QB this year... we roll with TT and if he gets hurt and we don't make playoffs .. oh well.. I'd rather see the QB of the future get reps than a vet backup QB come in to try to get us to squeeze into playoffs
  3. With the Bills strapped for cap space (i.e. they're having a tough time signing a vet FA RT) and with only six draft picks (R1,R2,R3,R5,R5,R6) it may be wise for this new coaching staff to seriously consider placing Kouandjio at LT and Glenn at RT rather than going with the more conventional Glenn at LT and Mills at RT.

Mills was a turnstile at RT last year, arguably the worst RT in the league. That needs to be improved upon.

I know that Glenn is being paid like a LT, and therein lies the rub for the Bills' front office. But the bottom line is that the Bills should be putting the best players on the field if they hope to win more games.

Because of Kouandjio's prior knee injury, he doesn't play RT very well. However, he does seem to play LT very well.

    Possible scenarios:

    Glenn - LT/Mills - RT

    Kouandjio - LT/Glenn - RT

    Glenn - LT/Ducasse - RT

    Glenn - LT/Groy - RT

There are a lot of possibilities but I think that the Kouandjio - LT/Glenn - RT experiment is at least worth exploring because it may prove to be the most successful.

    Your thoughts.

At the very least they should try it out for a week or so in Training Camp.. makes too much to not at least give it an honest look.

Glenn already got his big long term payday deal as a LT so I don't think he'd be too worried about how moving to RT would impact his next contract.

Also Ricky Wagner just got $9 mil to play RT for the Lions so I think teams are starting to value RT and their price will keep going up over time.

  4. How confident are you that Kujo could hold up as the every day LT....16 games? He filled in nicely in spot starts but it's a whole other game to be the full time guy.

Of course it's not the same position but I remember John Digorgio (so?) filling in nicely for Poz when he went down but couldn't be counted on for the full season.

I think, not sure, but think Keith Ellison filled in for Angelo Crowell pretty well but couldn't cut it as an every day starter.

I'd be confident that Kujo would perform at an average level over 16 games at LT. Not as good as Glenn.. but I think he'd be adequate.

While the concepts are likely the same on either side of the line... the muscle memory for LT and RT technique is completely opposite. It's been pretty obvious to me that Kujo has looked much more comfortable on the left side than the right.

  5. Here's a new name I hadn't come across before

Austin Pasztor, OT, Browns. Age: 26.

PFF GRADE: 84 pass block / 68 Run block

    __ _

    Here's what Walterfootball says

Austin Pasztor replaced the Kansas City-bound Mitchell Schwartz and did an OK job. Pasztor is a serviceable starter who pass protects well. He was a clear downgrade from Schwartz, however.

  6. It could be argued by his agent that playing RT diminishes his future value since LT is paid higher.

He already got his big $ LT contract .. it's unlikely he'll get another one so what does he care if he plays RT

Listening to the John Murphy show, Donald Jones thinks maybe Ryan Groy could be an option at RT. Never thought of that. Has RT size at 6'5" 320. Played damn well at Center in a pinch. Probably better than Jordan Mills right now, lol.

I want Groy at Center and cut Eric Wood to save $4 mil or so this year.

  7.

Um, because it would get their best 5 on the field?

Cyrus acquitted himself nicely at LT last year...if Glenn needs to move for a year because (a) he's capable of it and (b) it gets their two best tackles on the field, what's the big deal?

CK looked very solid at LT last year. I think he would be an average to slightly above average LT.

Conversely.. he has looked bad whenever the team has switched him to the Right Side.

Totally fine with flipping Glenn to RT.. and I don't think he would care too much as he already got his big money LT contract.

All that said.. looks like Vlad the Impaler is front runner for RT job right now. The RT crop in the draft looks weak. I suppose you could argue that Cam Robinson or Ramcyk would be better than Ducasse at RT.. but I'm not sure about that and I don't think I'd be drafting a RT in the first few rounds if I'm the Bills

  8. It's a start. He graded out 67.0 pass protect by PFF (granted that was at guard). .. for context Riley Reiff graded out at 68.7 pass protect .

Haven't seen the contract details yet.. but if we are getting him for $4 mil or less per year I'm fine with this move

  9. http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2017OT.php

Walter football seems to be the most spot on analysis site to my eyes.

Looking at their list .. and considering Wagner is gone.. I would say Beachum would be my next best RT target based on his age and profile. I think I'd be ok paying him $6 mil.

I think Reiff is overrated.. I wouldn't pay him more than $4 mil/year.

    Okung hasn't really played RT.

  10. If they can get him for under $8 mil or under I'd be very pleased. Hell .. I don't mind even overpaying a little.

Mills was a disaster last year... Kouandjio is much better on the left side..and Henderson was underwhelming when healthy.

This is really the last piece of the puzzle to create a Dominant O Line. Good pass protect gives an average QB ( Tyrod, Siemian.. Cutler.. whoever it ends up being) a chance to be above average.

  11. He's one guy I know very little about, anyone with info?

I live in Baltimore and occasionally watch the Ravens. He wasn't so good on at LT when he first started in the league but has been very solid at RT protecting Joe Flacco. I would grade his pass protect a B+ and his run blocking a C. Not really a mauler.. but a good technician. Good fit for new scheme under Dennison likely

I would sign up for this.

Apparently Foster dropped some weight and would be good fit as MLB in McDermott D.. which is key position

Obi seems like a versatile safety with size enough to play in the box and fast enough to cover the back end ok

Jones looked really good in Senior Bowl.. not sure if he'll last til the 3rd (maybe small school hurts him?) but if he's available here definitely take him

For whatever reason Webb has been underrated by most of the pundits. He has prototypical size, strong arm, is aggressive.. does a decent job getting the ball out in time and in rhythm. Decent footwork for big guy who is in shotgun most of time.

Not that familiar with Fields as I haven't really looked into any of the DEs or D Linemen much

Gonzalez - seems to be the best kicker available in draft. Why not.. Carpenter will be gone. Give him a shot in training camp and if he wins he will be super cheap.

  14. If those numbers are correct. I would keep Wood.

That is an intriguing option and a good one. How old is Groy? If in his 20's....Maybe a 3 year deal at $2 million a year for your back up swing G/C or a potential starter.

$1.6 mil in savings could help you re sign valuable depth.

For example.. you could likely sign either Brandon Tate (who was very solid in the return game last year) or Justin Hunter (a decent 3rd or 4th receiver) with those savings.

  15. Robyn Mundy from BillsWire wrote this piece..

    http://billswire.usatoday.com/2017/02/21/if-ryan-groy-re-signs-with-bills-could-eric-wood-become-expendable/

Should Whaley cut Wood? Should he replace him with Ryan Groy?

In my opinion this is a no brainer.

    • Wood is currently the 8th highest paid center at 6.35 mil/ year average.
    • According to Spotrac low- end centers get paid ~ $2mil/year. I think a 3 year deal averaging ~$2 mil/year with no guaranteed money would win us Groy's services saving the Bills ~$4 mil in cap space along the way
    • Wood is a great character guy/leader but there was literally no drop off in play when he broke his leg and Groy stepped in.
    • Wood is on the wrong side of 30
    • There are some decent Centers/Guards available in the later rounds (John Toth) and even in the earlier rounds if we want (Pat Elefin) that would be much cheaper long term options if Groy doesn't pan out
    • In general .. an NFL team shouldn't be paying a premium for Centers
  16.

When all is said and done, the Bills could very well determine their best move is to swallow hard and stroke the check for Taylor. Otherwise, they might be inclined to follow through with a plan that is thought to be appealing to at least one member of their hierarchy, General Manager Doug Whaley, and that is going with Cardale Jones as the starter.

    http://buffalonews.com/2017/02/10/bills-quarterback-options-beyond-taylor-look-slim/

    "thought to be appealing"

"thought to be appealing" doesn't sound very definitive to me

  17. Living in Baltimore and watching the occasional Ravens game.. Ricky Wagner has looked very solid the times I've watched him.

If he's available he's probably the best RT on the market.

I'd pay him $8 mil/ year regardless of what happens with TT and whether extra cap space is freed up.

Looking at the dearth of OT talent in the draft .. I think the Bills would be wise to make RT #1 priority and I have no problem spending some money there.

  19. I like your mention of Peterman. I wouldn't call his footwork "excellent." He gets sloppy with that front foot and it leads to some wild throws. Same issue EJ has, actually. However, he's definitely further along than most other prospects. I also don't like how he tends to force it to his first read. Otherwise, great all-around QB prospect that I wouldn't mind if the Bills took after the 2nd round. I'm interested to see what happens to his stock during the pre-draft process.

Good observation.. He's like a white unicorn because he actually has film operating under center.. so perhaps in relation to the other guys footwork is excellent but relative to NFL standards probably not
