  1. Happens to the best of them.. especially guys like Mahomes and Allen who are super athletes and thrive when improvising. Comes back to bite em in the ass sometimes tho It seems to be delayed blitzes I've seen have typically been LBs or DBs.... and they either come from the outside edge... or they hide behind the Dline and then sneak in through the A or B gap My pleasure.. hopefully they provide some context
  2. this is a good point.. hate to admit it .. but sometimes Allen "sees ghosts" a al Zach Wilson. the cumulative effect of bad pass pro from earlier in a game..or .. previous games does creep in
  3. There were some plays where Morse and Torrance failed.. and there was no pocket to climb. However.. I listed several specific plays where Allen had a chance to climb the pocket in my significant plays listing. From the All 22 and end zone view it is relatively easy to see q1 -UE2 - Delayed blitz.. Allen has Shakir for quick hitter blitz beater but unnecessarily bails out of the pocket resulting in incompletion q2 -UE3 - Allen has time.. has open Knox but decides to bail from clean pocket ( instead of climbing the pocket) and incomplete pass to Davis in end zone. Knox clearly pissed after the play
  4. there's few things more difficult in sports. silver lining is that we know Josh had the balance figured out in the past.. its in there somewhere. he is on the small side... that being said.. he was excellent the first few games in pass pro picking up blitzes.. not sure why he's regressing.
  5. Hah.. thanks for the warning. .and the compliment. The tape don't lie..
  6. good point. the whole delayed blitz tactic in the last few weeks has really thrown him off. in the past he would have just taken off running to make the d pay for that kind of blitzing.. but they are clearly asking him to dial that back. The delayed blitzes seem to come more when he has an empty backfield. Perhaps keeping a rb in .. or going more pistol would help? Its on Dorsey to help scheme against that tactic. But its also on Josh not to miss the opportunities that he is presented with.
  7. it is tough to see if he has opportunities to climb the pocket on the live broadcasts sideline view.. but coaches endzone view uncovers those missed opportunities
  8. In the past i used to do lengthy in depth posts with gifs.. don't have time for that nowadays I watched every passing snap to evaluate pass blocking performance as well as Josh Allen unforced errors committed (PASS BLOCKING ONLY EVALUATED.. did not evaluate running plays). UNFORCED ERROR = Allen has time to throw, wr is open and he misses throw.. or.. Allen makes poor unforced decision OLINEMAN BEATEN = O lineman clearly loses his one on one matchup... or.. clearly misreads stunt/combo block ____ OLINEMAN BEATEN STATS DAWKINS - 2 MCGOVERN - 0 MORSE - 2 TORRENCE - 3 BROWN - 1 -DAWKINS - Not a great game by Dawkins. Gave up 2 pressures and had a false start - MCGOVERN - #66 rallied from a poor game last week to have a clean sheet against NE. - MORSE - 2nd week in a row where Morse has struggled a bit. He was cleanly beaten twice giving up pressures. - TORRENCE - Rough day for the rook.. he looked flat footed all day. #90 way too quick for him. - BROWN - Hats of to #79. He was one of the best linemen today in pass pro. Only beaten once by my eye - DORSEY - Dorsey had TEs and RBs in on a regular basis to chip in against the rush with mixed results. Cook had another rough day in picking up biltzers.. but Murray was solid. He even had Shakir stay in for a few pass block reps. OL SUMMARY : Belichick employed much the same methods as the Giants in attacking the Bills pass pro. Lots of delayed blitzes from corners , lbs and safeties. Not a whole lot the O line can do in these situations where they don't have numbers. For the most part Josh escaped these free man blitzes but he had mixed results improvising on these escapes. Where the oline really suffered was up the middle. Morse and Torrence did not do well with their matchups and Allen suffered for it. In particular.. if Torrence holds his block for a half beat I have no doubt Josh hits Diggs on the go route in q3. Instead Torrence barely gets a hand on #92 and his rush up the middle disrupts Allens throw just enough for incompletion. QB UNFORCED ERRORS: Josh had 6 unforced errors by my count. Based on my history of doing this kind of analysis when a qb has 5 or more unforced errors the chances of his team winning decrease materially. SIGNIFICANT PLAYS - q1 - UE1 - INT - good protection.. bad choice by Allen q1 - Brown beaten to the outside by speed rush.. Allen flushed .. nice throw to Cook on scramble drill q1 -Shakir stays in to pass pro.. does nice job q1 -Good blitz beater quick throw to Cook in flat q1 -UE2 - Delayed blitz.. Knox clearly pissed after the play q2 -Torrence beaten outside by #90 flushes Josh.. inc to Diggs q2 - Cook poor blitz pickup .. Morse beaten by #92. Josh throws away q2 - SACK - Torrence whiffs on #90 ..blitz gets home as well. q2: UE4 - Josh has time.. stays on 1st read too long .. never works through progressions .. and then throws it away q3 - Morse does nice job picking up twist stunt q3 - Dawkins whiffs on LB delayed blitz... flushes Allen .. incomplete q3 - Miss on Diggs deep - Torrence loses his block on #92 and #92 alters Allen deep throw at last minute causing off target throw. q3 -False start Dawkins q4 - UE5 - Josh has time.. takes unnecessary extra hitch in clean pocket and throws behind Diggs incomplete q4- Cook falls down trying to get to delayed blitz pickup.. Allen flushed incomplete to Diggs q4 - UE6- Allen throws behind open Diggs in the seam SUMMARY - The O line was not great.. however..this one falls mostly on the QB unforced errors by #17. Allen has been showing several disturbing tendencies the last few games. #1- Bailing out of the pocket instead of climbing the pocket. There were several instances where Allen had room to climb the pocket to avoid pressure. .instead he bailed out wide. Mac Jones actually hung tougher and made a few throws climbing the pocket. Allen needs to get back to climbing the pocket and delivering.. even if he needs to take a hit to get the job done #2 - Staying on 1st read too long. Allen has not been consistently going through his progressions quick enough. There were several instances where he had open targets that were secondary reads.. which he either didn't see.. or decided not to check down to. Cook is struggling in picking up blocks.. which is a shame.. because he did so well earlier in the year. There were also a couple of plays where Dorsey didn't really give Josh a good outlet.. all deep developing routes where Josh hits his drop and noone coming out of their breaks yet. All in all it wasn't as bad as it looked live on TV. I'm really hoping Spencer Brown can build off this performance. I'm also hoping Torrence can rally after a few poor games. I don't like Ocyrus having to give the hand signal for snaps on the road. I think it distracts him from his technique. Hopefully being at home with a quiet crowd on offense will help him get back to form. If #17 can start climbing the pocket and do a better job of going through his progressions things should get better against the Bucs. I sure hope so because I'm driving up to Maryland to watch the game Thursday.
  9. The O Line is markedly improved this year ( the exception being RT) . Unfortunately a unit can really be brought down by the weakest link. Dawkins has his ups and downs.. but he is still capable and generally reliable McGovern has been rock solid ( except for Giants game) Morse is playing at All Pro level Torrence looks like a 5 year Vet Brown is a glaring liability who consistently sabotages the good work of the other 4
  10. sure thing.. your suspicion was well founded. Hopefully just a one game aberation as he was excellent in all previous games sloppy would be good term
  11. UNFORCED ERROR = Allen has time to throw, wr is open and he misses throw.. or.. He misread a stunt and was beaten cleanly by #93 several times. - MORSE - Not a clean sheet.. he misread a late developing stunt in q4.. but other than that another fine day for Mitch. - TORRENCE - Yet another solid performance. Only surrendered 1 pressure to my eye. - BROWN - Brown showed a glimmer of hope last week.. but that glimmer was snuffed out against the Giants. He regressed back to the mean .. surrendering 4 pressures against the G Men and commiting a bad false start penalty - DORSEY - To my eye Dorseyused TEs to chip twice and actually used Gabe Davis on a wham block once. It appeared the strategy this week was to get the TEs out in patterns for quick blitz beater throws rather than keep them in to chip. OL SUMMARY : The Giants were able to beat the Bills O line in multiple ways. Both #93 and #5 were able to win one on one against their Bills O LIne counterparts. DC Martindale blitzed frequently.. and was particularly successful sending delayed stunt blitzes. Dawkins, McGovern and Morse were all caught off guard by delayed twist stunts where the DE or OLB hid out and then snuck in to pressure qb up the gap in the middle. #58 for Giants was a spy on Allen and was very effective .. had a pass tip and also a hit on Allen. Not the best day for the OLine but Martindale really did throw the kitchen sink at them. QB UNFORCED ERRORS: Josh had 4 unforced errors by my count. Based on my history of doing this kind of analysis when a qb has 5 or more unforced errors the chances of his team winning decrease materially. SIGNIFICANT PLAYS - q1 - UE1 - Josh throws out route too early before Diggs starts his break..Diggs turns around but ball is already on him and its incomplete q1 - UE2 - Josh overthrows Davis on a deep crosser. q1 -UE 3 - Josh has time .. has Shakir open to his right but locks on Diggs too long (who isn't open). Pocket collapses and 17 throws dirt ball to Diggs general direction. q1 - Brown beaten by speed rush of #99 q1 - McGovern and Dawkins do not recognize twist stunt .. pocket collapses resulting in incompletion q1 - UE4- Allen bails clean pocket early and drifts to the right.. incomplete q2 -Brown beaten by speed rush of #5.. forcing incompletion q2 - McGovern beaten by 97.. flushes Allen and Allen takes a hit q2 - Brown false start q2: Dawkins beat to the inside by #5 flushing Allen to his right.. end result Allen is hit hard and hurts his shoulder q2: Gabe Davis stays in to wham block q2 - INT - 97 beats Torrence cleanly altering Allen's throw .. which is intercepted. q3 - Brown beaten again speed rush #5... flushes Allen but Allen gets small gain scrambling. q3 - Morse misses delayed twist stunt giving up pressure on Allen q3 - Cook whiffs on pass block against LB 41.. Allen miracuously escapes and makes completion to Diggs q4- McGovern beaten by #93 SUMMARY - Allen had a poor first half.. in particular .. a poor first few series. In my opinion he was a little to anxious to show he could get the ball out on time knowing Daboll was on the other sideline ..causing a few poor uncharacteristic unforced errors on his part. The first UE to Diggs was Allen being impatient and getting ball out to early before Diggs was in his break. He also overthrew an open Davis onthe next throw ( even though Davis tripped.. ball was still too high). Allen settled down in the second half and succeeded in spite of his O Line. In general.. Allen had a few reps where he bailed out of clean pockets early.. but for the most part he got the ball out quickly to counter the blitzing. . Brown regressed back to his old self.. being consistently beat on speed outside rushes and throwing in a false start for good measure. McGovern had a tough game as well. Cook had a very strong start to the year with good blitz pickups.. but he has now had several weeks in a row where he's whiffed on pass protect blocks. I expect to see more of Murray on pass downs if the trend continues. At the end of the day #17 successfully improvised on a few big plays ( TD to Morris.. first down to Diggs after miracle escape) to pull it out.
  12. The London games are such an outlier..such a strange setting. Im chalking most of this to the "London Effect".. flush and forget.
  13. thank you for catching that.. it was the INT. i edited the post to include it q4: UE 4 - INT Josh has Diggs open on deep ball but waits a beat too long and tries to throw bomb ..but he would have needed it to go 75 yds to outthrow the CB. He had Murray wide open for dump down
  14. UNFORCED ERROR = Allen has time to throw, WR is open and he misses throw.. or.. Allen makes poor unforced decision OLINEMAN BEATEN = O lineman clearly loses his one on one matchup... or.. clearly misreads stunt/combo block ____ OLINEMAN BEATEN STATS DAWKINS - 3 MCGOVERN - 0 MORSE - 1 TORRENCE - 3 BROWN - 1 -DAWKINS - Dion drew a tough matchup against Josh Allen #41. He was beaten several times and generally had a rough day overall. - MCGOVERN - Yet again... another clean sheet for McGovern. Guy is a stud. - MORSE - Morse finally gave up a pressure after 3 weeks of giving up nothing - TORRENCE - First rough day for the rook. Several holding calls and a missed stunt among the errors - BROWN - First solid game of the season for #79. He did a good job with stunt pickup and only surrendered one pressure. - DORSEY - Not much chipping or help from TEs in this one.. for the most part the O Line held its own without extra assistance. I counted 2 chips from Knox on DEs. No chips from RBs that I saw. OL SUMMARY : The line had a few rough patches but generally played well enough to give #17 a chance on most reps. The Jags blitzed heavily.. and Josh Allen #41 was a force to be reckoned with all day. The Jags also threw in several stunts and the Bills O Line had mixed results picking them up. For the most part the O Linemen were on their own without chips or RB help. QB UNFORCED ERRORS: Josh had 4 unforced errors by my count. Based on my history of doing this kind of analysis when a qb has 5 or more unforced errors the chances of his team winning decrease materially. SIGNIFICANT PLAYS - q1: UE 1 - First series of game Josh throw in flat to Cook on 3rd down too hard too far outside.. incompletion and punt q2: Dawkins beaten to the inside by #41 flushing Allen from the pocket forcing a throwaway q3: UE 2 - Allen rushes blitz beater throw on hook route to Davis.. high throw .. incompletion q3: Torrence misreads twist stunt and gives up pressure q3: Cook whiffs on pass pro rep q3: UE 3- Josh steps up to avoid the blitz..has Murray wide open in the flat but chooses to go downfield to Knox who is covered and overthrows him q4- Brown beaten to the inside by 44 flushes Allen to incomplete pass q4: Brown and Torrence do good job of picking up twist stunt q4: UE 4 - INT Josh has Diggs open on deep ball but waits a beat too long and tries to throw bomb ..but he would have needed it to go 75 yds to outthrow the CB. He had Murray wide open for dump down q4: Torrence holding q4: #41 does twist stunt.. Morse recognizes it but is still beaten .. #41 absolutely destroys the other #17 Josh Allen on a sack ( called back questionable helmet to helmet) OVERALL SUMMARY: What a strange game. From what I could see in the ALL 22 the O Line generally gave Allen time.. and Allen did a good job navigating muddy pockets. The problem I kept seeing was the receivers had very little separation and Allen was forced to throw into tight windows all day. Allen had a few unforced errors where he went for it all instead of taking the dump down to move the chains.. however.. for the most part #17 was getting the ball out quickly and taking what the D gave him. Dawkins had his first rough day as did Torrence. Hats off to Spencer Brown who had a solid day. He did a good job picking up stunts and did not surrender a single speed rush to the outside.. which has been his Achillies Heel.
  15. Good catch.. they were indeed several real quick chip and releases from the TEs to help Spencer out. In previous weeks the TEs sustained their blocks a little longer but these were quick little chips. I didn't catch them because on most of those plays Josh got the ball out so quick I didn't notice Only focused on the pass plays.. not able to comment too much on the run blocking. Watching O Line play is dull at first.. but now when I watch the game live .. I focus on one lineman pre snap ( usually Spencer Brown.. but sometimes Torrence or others) and don't even really look at Josh once ball is snapped. 9 times out of 10 .. if the lineman I'm watching holds his block.. the result of the play is a completion or positive.
  16. Brown has given up at least 3 pressures in each game.. where the most his fellow linemen have given up is 2.. i would respectfully say that makes him a liability Ascending may also be a bit of a stretch. His improvement against fins more due to lesser competition ( Van Ginkel is no Maxx Crosby) Cybo has much sand in the pants
  17. Good question.. Usually when a team targets a weak link .. they try to exploit the weakness by throwing stunts and delayed blitzes at the O Lineman who they are targeting to throw them off. Interestingly enough.. Brown and Torrence have been targeted by other teams with stunts and they have done an excellent job of identifying and coping with those stunts for the most part. Where Brown seems to have been targeted is teams lining up their stud DEs on his side ( Bryce Huff, Crosby.. Sweat..). These stud DEs had much success attacking Spencer Brown on his outside shoulder with the speed rush.. the dip and dive move. Nothing fancy.. nothing exotic.. just putting their best rushers one on one with Brown has generally worked for other teams.
  18. UNFORCED ERROR = Allen has time to throw, WR is open and he misses throw.. or.. Allen makes poor unforced decision OLINEMAN BEATEN = O lineman clearly loses his one on one matchup... or.. clearly misreads stunt/combo block ____ OLINEMAN BEATEN STATS DAWKINS - 0 MCGOVERN - 0 MORSE - 0 TORRENCE - 1 BROWN - 3 -DAWKINS - Dion dominated all day. He was almost beaten once but rallied and pancaked the guy before he got to Josh - MCGOVERN - Yet again... another clean sheet for McGovern. Rock solid HUGE upgrade over Saffold. - MORSE - 3 weeks in a row with a clean sheet in pass pro for the reliable vet - TORRENCE - Surrendered one pressure to Wilkins .... but held up very well. - BROWN - There were several reps where Brown dominated 43 Van Ginkel .Every time Van Ginkel tried the bull rush Brown got his hands inside, anchored and neutralized him. It was not a clean day for Brown however. He misread a stunt in q1 causing a pressure on Josh. Van Ginkel beat him on a nice reverse spin move causing 17 to scramble Van Ginkel also beat Brown via speed rush in q3 - DORSEY - Not much chipping or help from TEs in this one.. for the most part the O Line held its own without extra assistance. OL SUMMARY : The left side of the line absolutely dominated the Fins all day. McGovern and Morse are playing at a Pro Bowl level right now. Torrence continues to be steady with only the occasional misstep. This was Brown's best game .. he flashed dominance on some reps for the first time this year. The stat sheet shows Van Ginkel getting 2 sacks.. however ( as you will see below in SIGNIFICANT PLAYS) neither of those sacks were on Brown. QB UNFORCED ERRORS: Josh had 0 unforced errors by my count. Based on my history of doing this kind of analysis when a qb has 5 or more unforced errors the chances of his team winning decrease materially. SIGNIFICANT PLAYS - q1 - Cook whiffs on a blitz pickup.. Allen avoids and makes completion to Diggs q1 -Brown misreads stunt but JA gets ball out quick to avoid pressure q2 - 85 for Bills has nice wham block on DE .. Allen throws slant to Diggs. q2- Brown beaten on spin move by 43.. Allen scrambles throws TD to Diggs. q2 - Torrence beaten by 94 on outside shoulder.. Allen Sacked q3 - Van Ginkel SACK ( coverage sack.. not on Brown) q3 - Van Ginkel beats Brown on speed rush .. flushes Allen from pocket SUMMARY - The O Line consistently gave 17 time to throw today and Allen made the most of those opportunities. In the few times where the line gave up pressures or misread stunts.. Josh more often than not was nimble in the pocket .. hung in.. and still made excellent decisions and throws despite those pressures. Zero unforced errors by Josh to my eye.. a real gem of a game from him. If Allen can maintain his pocket poise like he's done the last few weeks then the sky is the limit for this offense. I think Dorsey realized that Miami's DEs were subpar and he made the right call by not using TEs and RBs to chip like he did the previous few weeks. Spencer Brown will likely never have a clean game .. however.. if he can play this type of game vs the average DEs of the league he may have a shot at sticking at RT for a while.
  19. It will not be. Hopefully Josh can stay disciplined and pick his spots
  20. Brown’s performance this year is near identical to last year. If he was injured last year .. and thus healthy this year.. his 2023 performance so far clearly indicates health was not the problem good catch. i miss a few occasionally. always happy to learn from others observations
  21. I give Dawkins the benefit of the doubt because he has a fairly consistent track record of good performances against elite DEs At this stage Brown no longer gets the benefit of the doubt from me. If you go back and read my posts from last year.. you will see I gave Dawkins plenty of criticism for his play the first half of the year. Fortunately he rallied and got himself back on track.
