  1. I would not be opposed to moving Teller to RG. Dawkins flashes good play at LT but also has struggled mightily at times. Only concern is that he is learning valuable footwork and reps at LG and would hesitate to have him have to reorient I would not characterize Dawkins as a "Stud". He has been passable at LT.. but he has a ways to go to get to Cordy Glenn level
  2. WYATT TELLER PASS PROTECT ANALYSIS I watched the All 22 from the Jets game and analyzed every pass protect snap by Wyatt Teller in the first half. I did not have time to watch the 2nd half.. (I do have a real job) .. however.. I think it a good sample size to show examples where he played well, was fooled on stunts.. and perhaps most importantly examples that showed he didn't repeat the same mistake twice. My system for grading is "Win" , "Loss" and "Draw" as described below: WIN block is material to the play block/assignment is executed well DRAW block is not material to the play block is executed well enough LOSS block is material to the play block/assignment is executed poorly DISCLAIMER: I am not a coach, I do not know exactly the play call or blocking assignment called on each play. I am merely an interested observer who focuses on O Line play every week and the following analysis is based on my observations --- OVERALL PERFORMANCE By my count there were 26 pass plays in the first half (including penalty plays etc...). "Won" 13/26 , "Lost" 3/26, "Draw" 10/26 ----- -- GIF BREAKDOWNS WIN : Q1: 14:29 - Teller is initially pushed back by #99 but rallies.. resets.. and gets his hands into the pads to push his man back at the last minute.. buying time for Allen to complete 18 yd strike. Teller demonstrates strenght, resolve and good technique in fighting through losing the initial punch. WIN: Q1 2:01 - Teller initially helps Dawkins with a double team .. but in doing that he is late in recognizing DE #96 coming in on delayed stunt. He miraculously avoids disaster however by getting there just in time and knocking #96 on his ass.. allowing for Allen to complete pass to Clay LOSS Q2: 4:56 - Teller goes to help Dawkins double #96 .. does not see Twist stunt from #50 leading to #50 flushing Allen from the pocket.. and eventually an INT LOSS: Q2 2:31 - FALSE START WIN: Q2 1:34 - Jets run as similar stunt as shown earlier with #50 and #96... but this time Teller picks it up quickly.. engages #50 and manhandles him WIN Q2 1:26 - Teller picks up the same stunt again showing he can think on his feet and adapt LOSS Q2 1:12 - Teller misreads the stunt this time and gets to #96 too late causing a pressure on Allen ---- CONCLUSION By no means was Teller perfect in pass protect in 1st half. However.. he did show some positive traits.. namely His strength often helps make up for poor technique or poor recognition He showed the ability to adapt and not get beat by the same stunt There were no holding penalties in the first half On the negative side A False Start is almost always inexcusable.. gotta clean that up He did misread a few stunts At the end of the day the Jets threw quite a few stunts at Teller and Dawkins in the first half ( mainly #50 and #96 working together) and the pair was 2/4 in picking them up. Hopefully Dawkins and Teller develop some chemistry here and learn to trust each other more in picking up stunts. I think the future is bright for Teller.. he seems to have the movement skills and strength to hang in the NFL and certainly has an attitude in finishing blocks. Hopefully with more experience will come less examples of him getting fooled by stunts. From what I've seen I believe he can develop into a reliable starting NFL Guard. ( On a side note .. John Miller is completely shot... I was a fan of his and had high expectations for him this year but its time to pull the plug) ( Also.. Juan Castillo likely needs to be fired. It seems like most of the time he calls for the Guards to double team it ends in busted protection)
  3. as would I. Dawkins has not been performing that well lately. If I'm Bills I would seriously consider LT as # 1 pick
  4. agreed.. Taylor's limitations throwing over the middle wasn't due to his not being tough or not wanting to take a hit.. he just physically couldn't see or make those throws. It sure is nice to have 6'5 strong armed qb who can see/throw over defenders and still get zip on the ball even when taking a hit
  5. When evaluating how QBs do vs the blitz I judge each play either as a Win, Draw or Loss. For definition : - Win = positive result ( Ie. positive yards gained, or qb made good decision to avoid blitz) - Draw = Qb did not take sack or INT, no postive yards gained - Loss = Qb made poor decision, lost yards or turnover __ __ In watching All 22 it appeared that the Jags blitzed Allen 6 times. -For the most part the blitzes came on 3rd and long. The Jags generally just rushed 4 and stunted ( which was fairly effective on its own OVERALL RESULTS WIN: 3 - 6 DRAW: 2-6 LOSS 1 - 6 BREAKDOWN WINS Q1 - Jags send 5 - Allen makes athletic move to avoid blitzing A Gap LB in his face and runs up middle for 5 yd gain q4 : Jags send 5 2nd and 9. Jags send 5... Allen is decisive and runs up middle for 45 yard run q3 - Jags send 6 3rd and 7 Allen hits Croom on hot route for gain DRAW q2 - Jags send 5 on 3rd Down ( midfield) Allen senses pressure.. tries to throw to McKenzie (I believe) who is one on one with Ramsey down sidelines Throw is a bit low and behind.. Ramsey Intercepts it Called back as Ramsey called for Illegal Contact I called this a Draw ... but one could argue it was a win as he took a shot and drew the penalty. One could also argue this was a loss as his throw was poor and was picked off by Ramsey .. and may have even been picked off if Ramsey didn't commit Illegal Contact Q4 - Jags send 6 - 3rd and 14 Allen stays in pokcet.. hit as he trys to throw comeback throw to Thompson Good decision... throw was off (likely due to hit) LOSS Q3 - 3 + 7 - Jags send 6 Line holds up well enought.. Allen has time but short hops a throw to an open Foster on deep comeback Just a bad unforced error by Allen SUMMARY Jax didn't blitz very much... but when they did Allen generally handled it well. They key to handling a blitz is to be decisive. That could be manifested in a variety of ways...being decisive and taking off running ...hitting a quick pass .... throwing a jump ball trying to draw penalty. In short.. Allen only had one ( arguably 2) bad outcome and was effective or at least fought to a draw the majority of the time.
  6. indeed.. it's been so long since we've seen that . That 's what real qbs do.. stand in the pocket.. take a hit and deliver the velocity is noticeable... its' definitely a fastball. Consistency is key.. but if he can make 2 of those types of throws per game going forward like he did last week we'll be in good shape
  7. I think it is safe to assume that everyone has seen the TD bomb to Foster and justfiably so that play is getting much attention as an example of JA climbing pocket and throwing a strike. While that throw was incredible.. the 19 yd throw to Foster shown below from 3q :12 mark is even better IMO - Allen stands tall in the pocket .. - Hit as he releases the ball - Throws with velocity over the middle - Gets it over /around 3 defenders to Foster for a first down That's as good as it gets right there...
  8. here's a Gif of one of his pancakes... This makes me very happy.. I hope he can be the new Richie
  9. good stuff. here's a breakdown i did on one of his preseason performances a few months ago. https://buildingherd.com/2018/08/14/breaking-down-rookie-lg-wyatt-tellers-2nd-quarter-preseason-vs-carolina-gifs-included/ I think there's a lot of potential there. I had high hopes for John Miller's comeback but they've been dashed at this point. Put in the kid and let him get some experience
  10. good catch Gunner... I didn't notice that. Either way.. whoever is at RT Sunday looks like they're vulnerable to power rushers
  11. Sal Capaccio said Shaq is practicing.. so let's hope he's almost 100% because if he is he may have a field day Getting bull rushed into qb twice in one half would qualify as a bad game to me...
  12. i added another one where he is pushed back again into Rodger's face I found a few plays later...
  13. I've been watching coaches tape of GB/Skins game. Bulaga may be the weak link... Trent Murphy needs to eat his Wheaties and just bull rush Bulaga all day.
  14. agreed.. need to see that approach week in week out
  15. one thing I know for sure Tony Romo > Phil Simms. thank god Simms and his dumb Texas accent is gone from color commentary
  16. i agree.. i jumped out of my chair watching that live. .. it was a revelation. He’s tall and strong enough to flick that ball 30 yards over the rusher in his face to the perfect spot. Holmes and Benjamin are just too awkward to consistently make those plays. That’s the kind of throw Aaron Rodgers makes routinely. ( not that Im crowning JA the next Rodgers.. ).. just saying it takes a certain mentality and physicality to execute that throw he takes a good hit on that one too... I’ll be the first to admit I was not happy with Bills drafting Allen over Rosen.. thought he was way too raw. This Vikes game shows he has the capability to learn quickly and immediately put those learnings to work. I sure hope the trend continues.
  17. i think that one “what no to do@ was against a 4 man rush so as it wasn’t a blitz i didn’t include it in analysis
  18. updated so gifs work now hah.. smearing balls?? yeah he improved handling the blitz pretty good but definitely needs to work on ball security
  19. as always... comments welcome (photo credit: Getty Images/Hannah Foslien) Could Josh Allen show incremental improvement in dealing with the blitz in week 3 after looking rough in weeks 1 and 2? Would he be able to not only avoid the sack.. but make the Viking's D back off by burning them for taking risks? To determine his success rate we broke down 7 plays in the first half where Minnesota sent 1, 2 or 3 extra defenders to rattle the rookie QB. Each play is graded as one of the following: LOSS - Minnesota's pressure results in a sack or non threatening attempt by the QB WIN - Buffalo QB acts decisively and his actions result in positive yards or an attempt that would make the D think twice about sending same pressure next time DRAW - Buffalo QB acts decisively against the blitz but doesn't execute __ ____ ____ In last week's breakdown Bills/LA Wk 2: All-22 OLine/Qb Unforced Error Analysis we analyzed Josh Allen and the O Line's peformance against the Chargers. In that game Allen had several unforced errors atrributed to either not correctly identifying a blitz that was coming or not being decisive in trying to make LA pay for sending extra men. Decisiveness can manifest itself in several ways... getting the ball out quickly, running into the void when appropriate. In short.. he was generally passive against the extra pressue dialed up and never made the Chargers think twice about taking the risk of blitzing. So.. lets see if he learned anything from the previous week by watching 7 plays from the 1st half against the Vikes .and then tally up the scorecard. BREAKDOWN WITH CLIPS q1: 14:18 - Vikings send 6 on blitz. The Min defender in the 2 gap blocks down on Bodine to create lane for the stunting DE initially lined up over Ducasse. Murphy does nice job picking up the stunting DE but Bodine stays on his double team too long and Allen is sacked. Allen really had no chance on this play to get rid of it. RESULT = LOSS - OLine to blame for Sack ____ _____ Q1 7:31 - Min sends 7 on a jailbreak blitz. Allen takes quick drop.. plants and throws a decisive strike to KB on a slant getting the ball out quickly and not being affected by pressure. RESULT : WIN - Vikes should've been burned with a TD here ( unfortunately KB drops it) ___ ____ Q1 2:05 - Vikes send 5, Allen makes good decision to scramble for 10 yards to burn the blitz (and does his Air Jordan impression.. not such a good decision but pretty freaking cool to watch). The key here is that as soon as he hits his drop he is decisive. When done at the appropriate time running can be a good blitz breaker. RESULT: WIN - Turning a blitz into a first down ____ _____ Q2 3:05 - Min sends 5, notice the delayed A Gap blitz by # 55. Allen stands tall with free blitzer bearing down on him and throws tight window crossing route to Holmes. RESULT: WIN - As we can see the O line does a good job of picking up pass rushers.. its on Allen here to beat the free man #55 and he does that by making a decisive throw (rather than bailing out or taking a sack... he makes a ballsy throw.. good to see) ____ __ Q2 8:19 - MIN sends 6, Allen hits 3 step drop and gets rid of ball quickly blind back shoulder pass to KB. RESULT: WIN - Allen gets the ball out on schedule to beat the blitz before receiver turns around trusting KB to come back and get it (which he does) ___ _ Q2 7:44 - Min sends 5, Allen climbs the pocket to avoid the rush (good) .. however he overthrows KB who is one on one (not good). RESULT: DRAW - ___ Q2 7:34 Below is an example of Allen sensing the blitz, hanging tough, getting the ball out quickly and throwing it up for grabs so his WR can have a chance to make a play. The Vikes are sending 5 here. John Miller is beaten badly and #17 has a man coming right in his face. Allen is not waiting for his receiver to get open.. he knows he has one on one coverage and his receiver Holmes has a better shot of coming down with it than the CB does. This is OUTSTANDING. Very few Bills QBs have had the confidence, stature or smarts to attempt these type of throws. Not only did Allen avoid the sack.. but he got the ball out quickly gave his WR a chance to make a 20 yard gain. RESULT : WIN - Vikes were inches away from giving up 20 yd pass FINAL RESULTS LOSS - 1 WIN - 5 DRAW - 1 To summarize Josh Allen effectively attacked the blitz 5 out of 7 times in the first half. The one loss was more on the O Line than on #17. The one draw that was an overthrow was a mix of good behavior/bad technique. __ __ CONCLUSION Folks... if Josh Allen can effectively attack blitzes sent his way over 70% of the time going forward it's going to be a hell of a ride. Back shoulder throws.. tight window throws.. not bailing from the pocket in the face of a blitz... all good stuff. Bills fans have not seen this kind of aggressive confident play in years. Orton and Fitzy had their moments but neither had the athleticism that Josh Allen has. There's a lot of football left.. and maybe this was a fluke.. but if Josh Allen can develop and consistently demonstrate winning habits to beat NFL blitzes like he did against the Vikes last week the Bills may finally have a "real" qb.
  20. After rewatching gamepass Groy was main reason for Allen sack in 2nd half when he fumbled. He pretty much whiffed on the DT who was in Allen’s face immediately. ( sack was on Groy/ fumble on Allen being careless to be clear)
  21. good to see they were open to changing it up to more downhill blocking in 2nd half. im fine with 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
