  1. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How the QB did on every pass play (I may have missed a snap or two here or there. There also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) Sufficient protection means that TT had time to hit his drop and had at least a second to scan the field. DISCLAIMER (I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS: 40 - (last week was 31 total pass plays for reference) LINE BREAKDOWNS: 12/40 snaps - or 30% of snaps. (last week was 16%. Essentially the line was twice as bad this week as they were last week). In other words TT didn't really have a chance on 30% of his drop backs. Looking back through the history of my doing this analysis.. 30% is the worst breakdown percentage since the 2015 Texans game which was a 28% breakdown rate.. and is the worst percentage I have seen.. which is saying a lot based on some of the O Line train wreck performances from last year. Based on historical data the threshold for average O Line performance has been around a 20% breakdown rate. SUFFICIENT PROTECTION: 28/40 snaps or 70% - (last week was 84%). In other words TT had a relatively clean pocket 70% of the time UNFORCED QB ERRORS: 5/28 snaps or 18% (last week was 12%). Based on my 2015 studies if you have 5 unforced QB errors or less during a game your odds of winning are solid. TT had 5 unforced errors by my count.. so he was right on the borderline. Bottom Line: 1ST HALF PASS PROTECT WAS OK - The O Line held up reasonably well in the 1st half other than Jordan Mills getting beaten a couple of times by Wake 2ND HALF PASS PROTECT WAS SCARY BAD - 10 of the 12 pass protect breakdowns occurred in the 2nd half. There were multiple offenders. Mills continued to struggle, with Miller being the next worst offender. Wood, Incognito and even the usually solid Cordy Glenn all had moments when they struggled with pass protection. . MILLS AND SPEED RUSH - Last week against the 49ers I mentioned how Mills was never really cleanly beaten by his man but he was making me nervous giving up a lot of ground on outside speed rushes. This week it caught up to him. Cameron Wake consistently beat him around the outside with speed rushes and Mills was pretty much a tire fire for most of the day. I'm hoping it's just a one off matchup issue as Wake is a premier talent who can get low and bend around the edge with the best of them. Either way.. I do think the book is out on Mills now unfortunately.. he can be beat with speed. MILLER STRUGGLES IN 2ND HALF - John Miller has been playing exceptionally well this year but last Sunday he was overmatched by Suh on several plays.. and looked somewhat lost or confused on some others. The play below shows him getting beaten by Suh ..forcing a TT scramble. TYROD HAS A COMPLETE GAME.. BUT COMMITS ONE CRITICAL UNFORCED ERROR - Last week I talked about how we were all waiting for a single game where TT puts it all together and displays all the types of throws he is capable of making in one game. This week it all came together. When I say "complete" game I don't mean a perfect game. What I mean by "complete" is a game where TT executes a variety of different throws that illustrate his work towards addressing his issues. Many have criticized him for not attacking the deep middle. There were several examples of him showing great footwork, pocket presence and executing tough intermediate throws over the middle last Sunday in Miami. There are many things to like about this play directly below. TT calmly side stepping right to avoid the pressure coming up the middle from Incognito's man. TT .stepping into the throw.. throwing over top of the safety 47.. throwing deep down the middle of the field in the red zone. This is the type of aggressive throw we need to see more of from TT. Poor footwork, lack of anticipation, not throwing into tight windows, and not utilizing Clay have been legitimate criticisms of TT up to this point. Below is an example where he demonstrates progress on all 4 of these issues in one throw TT has rarely demonstrated a willingness to attempt... or the ability to hit deep seam routes. See the example below of him hitting a deep seam route to Clay. Again.. an example of TT stepping up in a messy pocket.. getting hit.. and making an aggressive completion. The one glaring missing throw type has been the deep sideline "Go" route that he has historically been so good at throwing. Last week he missed Goodwin due to the line not holding up. Not this week. Note Taylor takes a 3 step drop, steps up..hangs tough in the pocket and takes a hit right after delivering the perfect strike to Goodwin. With all the good shown previously TT unfortunately committed an Unforced Error at the worst time. 3rd and short at the Dolphins 40 yd line with 1:04 left in 1st half. If TT executes here the Bills at least get a FG attempt.. at best they get a chance to score a TD and pad the lead at the half. Unfortunately TT just flat out misses this relatively routine slant throw to Goodwin.. no excuses here. Huge missed opportunity on TT's part. SUMMARY - Most of the offensive passing game struggles can be attributed to Jordan Mills having a really... really bad day against Cameron Wake. Couple that with an overall disastrous Q4 for the OLine and you have a situation where 25 points is not enough to win this one. Tyrod had a very solid game with relatively few unforced errors considering they had 40 pass attempts. Unfortunately one of TT's unforced errors came on a crucial 3rd down in Miami territory at the end of the 1st half costing them a likely 3 or more points that they could have used. I come away from this game happy with TT's progress and very nervous about Jordan Mills as he has been slipping the last few weeks. Hopefully Anthony Lynn will know to give Mills some tight end or RB help against future speed rushers. Have faith Bills fans...In my opinion our QB showed much progress against Miami. He's certainly not there yet.. but I think he is very close to performing like the mid level NFL starter we are paying him to be. 2. Yes PFF system has it's flaws.. however.. it is at least a systematic way of grading a player's performance. There is a wide gap between the PFF high grade and label of "Another Flawless Performance" and some of the comments made by posters on this board who say that TT had an awful game and that he was the main reason the Bills lost. The answer is somewhere in between there certainly.. but I will trust that is much closer to the PFF grade than then anecdotal emotional grade given by some posters here.
  3. Here are 2 headlines from PFF breakdown .. solid analysis https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-nfl-buf-mia-grades-outstanding-ajayi-leads-dolphins-to-win/ Quarterback grade: Tyrod Taylor, 84.5 Taylor is his usual self in nearly flawless performance --- Surrounding cast unable to help Taylor Buffalos offensive line had its worst game this season as they struggled both in pass protection and in opening lanes for the running backs. Right tackle Jordan Mills struggled the most in pass protection as he surrendered two sacks and four quarterback hurries.
  4. Were you able to see whether any of his receivers were ooen on any of those double clutch plays? Watching the tv broadcast I know I couldn't really tell. Maybe they were maybe they weren't. I will reserve judgement until I can watch Coaches Film All 22

  6. That's not factually accurate. O line was horrendous today in pass protect. I am assuming my All 22 review post later in week will confirm
  7. He hit Clay on an aggressive middle intermediate route Play after he threw a tight aggressive completion between 2 defenders on a post route He hit Goodwin on n a perfectly placed deep go route down the sideline He escaped 3 or 4 sacks to avoid severe negative yardage He had zero turnovers
  8. Tyrod missed one crucial 3rd down slant. Other than that he hit many throws with no turnovers and escaped many bad situations What specifically are you criticizing TT for?
  9. Jay Ajai - This guy was epically fantastic today. We were generally in good position but this guy broke tackles and was tough as nails Jordan Mills- Got toasted all day Adam Gase- stuck with the run when down by 2 scores and did not panic
  10. I can really only think of 3 poorly thrown deep balls by TT this year. Certainly the missed one to Woods in LA was on TT, there was a deep throw down the middle he underthrew in Jets game I believe .. and one other than I can't specifically remember. He tried to hit Goodwin on a go route in the 49ers game but unfortunately the line broke down and the throw was offline due to him getting hit. I think eventually he'll start hitting those.. hopefully they keep taking shots.
  11. That is my perception as well Coach Tuesday. Last year his YPA was fantastic.. but it was mostly due to the 1 or 2 long bombs per game he would hit in most of those games that skewed the average. I'm over generalizing here... but last year it was likely a dump off pass or a 50 yard bomb.. very little intermediate route completions/attempts in between. This year.. particularly in the last few games.. he has been attempting/completing more intermediate routes and just missing on the deep balls. So in that sense.. YPA doesn't always directly correlate with a QB executing an offense correctly. I don't have the stats in front of me.. but I assume his YPA in week 2 Jets game was higher than in any other game this year... but I think most would agree that he performed very poorly in the Jets game other than the two deep balls he hit. This is also a major reason why the defense is performing so much better since week 3. And a major reason why Roman is gone as it was pretty apparent that Roman was trying to go deep way to often rather than focusing on moving the chains.
  12. He certainly doesn't target the intermediate/ deep middle of the field often. He did attempt one intermediate seam route to Clay .. a tight window between 2 defenders..and he hit Clay in the hands but Clay dropped it (given it was a tough catch to make and he got hammered)
  13. Thank you .. I always wonder if what I'm writing is coherent We killed them with play action last year in Miami.. hopefully we can repeat. Hopefully Lynn has planted some bad chum in the last few games for the Dolphins to choke on
  14. You may be right... I watched it over and over and couldn't figure out what was really going on there. It certainly looked like a busted play. Some blocker made a mistake there
  15. Richie is definitely still playing at a pro bowl level as a run blocker. And his pass protection is by no means bad.. it's just not at the ultra dominant level it was in 2015. He's looked really overmatched on a couple of pass plays this year and has committed some penalties that he didn't take last year With that said I love having him on my team and I'm crossing my fingers we can get two more solid years out of him
  16. I think he hit Clay in the hands on one seam route but Clay got hammered and dropped it
  17. Yeah.. unless he grows 2 or 3 inches soon this will always be an issue. If you can't see you can't see.. just a natural limitation
  18. Unforced errors.. bad throws/ How did the O Line do?/ What mistakes are on the O-Line.. what ones are not? I watched the NFL rewind all 22 and here is my unofficial count of how the O-Line did / How the QB did on every pass play ( I may have missed a snap or two here.. there also may be a few extra pass attempts that were cancelled due to penalites..but this should be 95% accurate) Sufficient protection means that TT had time to hit his drop and had at least a second to scan the field. DISCLAIMER ( I am not a coach, I don't know the hot reads or route combinations called.. this is just my educated perception of what happened on each pass play) _______ ______________________ TOTAL PASS PLAYS: 31 - (FYI I did not count EJ garbage time snaps). LINE BREAKDOWNS: 5/31 snaps - or 16%. In other words.. TT didn't really have a chance on 16% of his dropbacks. Based on my studies from 2015 ... a number under 20% is generally solid pass protect day SUFFICIENT PROTECTION: 26/31 snaps - or 84%. TT had a relatively clean pocket 84% of the time UNFORCED QB ERRORS: - 3/26 snaps - or 12%. Based on my 2015 studies if you have 5 unforced qb errors or less during a game your odds of winning are solid Bottom Line: PASS PROTECT SOLID - The O line was generally solid in pass protect save for a few breakdowns. Of the 3 sacks allowed 2 were really coverage sacks. The obvious screw up was Miller letting 91 get through untouched in q1 to crush Taylor on what looked like a blown play. TT also turned a whiffed Gillislee LB pickup into a 21 yard gain. INCOGNITO SLIPPING - Richie had a few bad plays in pass protect. In Q1 he recognized a twist stunt too late causing pressure in TT's face and forcing him to scramble. In Q2 64 whiffed on a cut block on Buckner.. forcing TT into an incompletion. MILLS AND SPEED RUSH - Mills was never really cleanly beaten by his man. However.. there were several instances where he struggled with the outside speed rush. RB'S GOOD / BAD BLITZ PICKUP - Gillislee did a great job in blitz pickup a few times. However.. he very much whiffed on a LB blitz in Q4. McCoy and O'Leary both did poorly on a blitz pickup on a q1 pass play TYROD HAS "ALMOST" COMPLETE GAME - Tyrod completed many different types of throws today. His quick timing game was solid.. he scrambled and made throws on the run.. and he had a few plays where he side stepped pressure, stepped up into the pocket and delivered. The one throw missing (which has been missing for a few weeks now) is the deep sideline "Go" route that he is usually so good at throwing. He attempted one today in the first half to Goodwin .. but unfortunately the O Line broke down on that play forcing an underthrow. PLAYS OF NOTE q1: 12 :24 - UNFORCED ERROR - TT is late and low on a Clay comeback route the first throw of the game q1 11:48 - Incognito recognizes a stunt too late causing pressure in TT's face q1 11:05 - O'Leary and McCoy double team on a blitz pickup but both get overpowered causing pressure q1 9:41 - John Miller lets 91 into backfield untouched to crush Taylor on what looked like a blown play q1 5:43 - TT shows great pocket presence by taking a side step to avoid pressure, keeps his eyes downfield and steps up into the pocket to hit Clay q2 - Incognito whiffs on a cut block allowing Buckner to get pressure in TT's face q2 2:47 - UNFORCED ERROR - TT bails from pocket early and doesn't see an open WR on right hash q2 :38 - UNFORCED ERROR - Bad decision on dump down to McCoy (almost gets McCoy killed). Had a wide open easy throw to Goodwin on a hitch to the left that he doesn't see q3 10:42 - COVERAGE SACK Q3 3:13 - Really nice job hanging in pocket and hitting throw to O'Leary q3 2:10 - Excellent footwork, pump fake and perfect throw to Justin Hunter who beats 2 safeties for TD q4 11:37 - Gillislee whiffs on blitz pickup..but TT turns lemons into lemonade for 21 yard gain SUMMARY The Bills have a really solid O Line (ahhhhh... feels good to say that. No more Urbik, Richardson, Henderson nonsense). When Incognito is the weak point in pass protect because he has 2 bad plays.. you know you are on the right track. I have a feeling that Tyrod is very close to having a complete game where he will marry the move the chains short passes with a few nice deep balls. The only thing that I see as something he can't overcome is his penchant for bailing out of the middle of a pocket too early trying to find passing lanes because he can't see over his linemen.
