He had a HORRIBLE combine. Coleman had a slow 40, but he excelled in the rest of the drills. Franklin was just bad all around.

Anyone can have a bad day.  The numbers really weren't that bad,  anyway.  It was good enough for a 9.33 RAS score.

There may be something else going on,  but I also think this may be a Khalil Shakir situation where teams filled their needs early and he got caught up in the numbers in a deep draft.  I don't think it's just the combine.

WR3’s are getting PAID in the NFL.

We still don’t have a down the field threat.

We were down to Diggs, Shakir and Sherfield in the biggest games of the year last season.

They need to have some quality competition for the slot/flanker spots anyway.  And this isn't really a great spot for anything else in this draft.  May as well get a burner who can take the top off the defense.  I think he can be more than that,  too.

  3. I think they'll try to trade back one more time,  probably to 35 or 36 and try to upgrade another 4th into a 3rd in the process.  I wouldn't move back any further.

I think they take Franklin or McConkey with their first pick.  Pick 60 lines up on safety value in this draft,  so that would be my guess there,  though I could also see another WR or a DT.  Might even trade up or down.

If they don't select two WRs with the first two picks,  I think they will with the 3rd and day three will be defensive depth and maybe an early C prospect.

Some believe that DeJean is a future 4-5x all-pro.  If Beane views him as that I don't see how he could pass on him. Very likely is the BPA at this point as well.

However there are players that fit the bill at 4 positions there right now.

Newton at DT, DeJean at S/CB, McKinstrey at CB and Mitchell at WR.

They could maybe be OK with taking any of those 4 and maybe be willing to move down 3 picks and take whatever one is left or pick from those 4...

Beane has a ton of options right now in this spot.

If they thought DeJean was that kind of player,  they should have ran to the podium at 28 and never thought twice about it,  especially with Baltimore setting there a couple of picks later,  always willing to draft a high quality defender that drops.

I think there is a great chance that they trade out of #33.  The Bills have almost 9 more hours to field calls from teams that see a prospect there that they covet and there will be enough interest to create a sellers market.  That's enough interest and time for someone to make the Bills an offer that they can't refuse and the Bills get the 4th "Top 100" pick that we've been discussing.  Maybe with Carolina again, give them #33 and #204 for #39 and and #101.  A trade that's both "close enough" to the Top 100 goal and ironic.

39 may be too far.  I'm thinking one more trade down to 35 or maybe 36.  Arizona has pick 90 and 104,  Washington has 78 and 100 as potential compensation.

I could see something like pick 33 and 128 to Arizona for 35 and 104 (maybe 90 if the Bills toss in another 4th-6th this year or next).

This makes a lot of sense. Hard to see them going WR at 33 but hope I'm wrong.

Trade down also seems very likely.

Could be,  but DeJean is kind of a rare traits type.   I'm not sure they would have risked losing him in a trade down if he was definitely their guy.

i’ve heard about some nebulous character concerns with AD Mitchell, and that he has diabetes type one and does not manage it well.

I hope that if we select one of the other two guys, you mentioned, they can help stretch that spacing for us. Hell, maybe Franklin will end up being able to do it better than worthy. That would be fantastic and I’d be happy to eat my words.

My gut feeling as of this morning is Franklin/McConkey with the 1st 2nd round pick to be the versatile, all-around guy,  then Devontez Walker with one of the remaining picks.

  8. We'll see over the next few years,  but if I'm just looking for a guy to run off the deep coverage, I like Franklin better than Worthy.  BTJ was the best pure deep threat of the top prospects,  but Franklin was damn close from what I saw.  I have significant concerns about AD Mitchell,  but he's still available.   And I like McConkey in that role as well,  though I do think he's a step down from those.

  9. I'm reordering my top three a bit. I had it as DeJean,  McConkey and Franklin,  but I'm swapping spots,  moving Franklin to 1 and DeJean to 3.  I'm starting to think that,  because DeJean is sort of an unusual/rare traits type of prospect,  they would have likely selected him if they really wanted him rather than risk losing him,  especially to Baltimore,  who took a CB.

So I'm thinking this draft now goes:

    33) Franklin or McConkey (possibly trading down again and still picking one of these two)

    60) Safety...Seems to be where the pure safety value is.

    95) WR...the more traditional X position guy...might trade up for someone like Walker.

Day three...heavy emphasis on defensive depth and developmental guys. Maybe a good center prospect early.

Are people hating on Cooper DeJean because they don’t want a defensive player? Even if he is clearly the best available in a pretty thin safety class?

I'd be fine with it,  but I think he's a zone CB and more of a projection to safety.  I'd give him his first shot at the former and only switch him to the latter if he fails at CB.

The bills only traded back because they thought their guy would be available at 2.01.

That tells me they want to take a guy that most people didn't mock in the first round. So who could that be ?

Is it possible the bills loved a guy like Ricky Pearsall, and thought no way someone would take him in the first?

What if the bills shot themselves in the foot?

Unless the bills trade down again, why risk losing out on your guy just to gain a better draft position in round 3?

You don't trade back if you're only targeting one guy.  If they go WR with the first pick,  it's a safe assumption that they have a handful of them with roughly equal grades that they would be satisfied with.

I find myself largely agreeing with Joe Marino here, Legette at 32 would have been nice but if you told me before the draft we could move down 5 spots and get back in the 3rd round (and upgrade a day 3 pick) I would have taken it. If we wake up tomorrow with DeJean, Franklin and somebody else I'll be thrilled. I can get excited for Mitchell but I don't understand the McConkey love - maybe someone who watches more college football than I do can explain the appeal behind a guy with his mediocre production and good but not elite tools

There's probably nothing wrong with his production.  He had over 50 receptions in 2022 and probably would have done so again this year if not for missing time with injuries.  Further,  going back to 2018,  he's the only Georgia WR with 50 receptions in a single season (Bowers did it twice at TE). So that's likely a byproduct of their offensive system.

Combine and pro day testing numbers for speed, agility and short area burst were all well into the higher end of the range and I think it shows up on the field.  He's below Thomas and Franklin,  but he can run past people on deep routes.  He's got the quickness to snap off his routes as well as anyone.  And I thought he was the best RAC guy by a fair margin of the higher tier prospects I watched,  especially in traffic (I did not bother with MHJ or Nabers).  I think there's a lot to like there and he's likely to become a very good flanker or slot in the NFL,  assuming he's healthy.

  13.  I don't like the idea of trading down with KC, but KC was probably going to end up with Worthy anyway.   Otherwise,  yeah,  I'm happy with it, on the assumption that Beane still gets the player he wants and that they come out of R2 with a quality WR prospect.  I'm also very happy that they didn't throw a pile of premium draft picks at a trade up into the top 10.
