A simple eye test demonstrates Nagy was the bigger problem that Trubisky.  So this is a legit topic.  Please feel free to sit it out.

Why would the Bills trade him? The whole idea is to have an NFL QB ready to step in if Allen gets hurt. A team with Super Bowl aspirations doesn't want to run Webb or Fromm out there, especially for extended period.

I love the breakdown and think you have it exactly right.  The only few things I will add is if the reports of the expanded practice squad are correct along with the added veteran spaces - I wonder if that has some impact to decisions.  We saw last year - the Bills were not afraid to have some veteran “name” players on the PS as protection and they were not afraid to use the call-ups to get some guys into the lineup as needed.

The Bills have CAP space and I wonder if a couple of veterans like Addison and Butler might accept a cut and resign to the PS as a way to stay with the team, but allow the young guys a place on the roster.  That allows a few call ups to make sure you have the experience, but protects the youth.

Same thing may go for Hollister if his back takes a bit to get on the field - maybe stick around as a safety net and we will work with you.

The final spot I could see getting some PS love from a veteran would be OL - maybe a Bobby Hart works with the Bills on a cut and resign to the PS as a safety net to allow the team to keep a younger guy, but provide veteran  protections.

It depends upon how much better/how close some of these battles are, but I could definitely see a few veterans decide that sticking with a potential SB team as a PS player this year could be a helpful move instead of being outright cut.

Addison and Butler will not go to the practice squad.  If they are cut, other teams will be interested. Even if they were eligible I doubt it would happen .

Why not? Because you generally only keep 5-6 WR's at a time. I've seen us carry 7 once or twice, but it's not very common. Plus, this season everyone wants us to keep a 6th Defensive End and a 6th Cornerback as well. And you can't keep an extra guy at all these positions without severely hindering the 53 at depth in a number of places to make it happen.

So long story short, which two players do you cut at WR when your roster looks like this?

    Stefon Diggs

    Cole Beasley

    Emmanuel Sanders

    Gabe Davis

    Isaiah McKenzie

    Marquez Stevenson (2021 Draft Pick)

    Isaiah Hodgins (2020 Draft Pick)

    Jake Kumerow

I'm a Kumerow fan. But we're so deep, it's really uphill sledding for him.

Special teams is a consideration.  McKenzie  Stevenson and the rarely-mentioned Brandon Powell are competing for KO/ PR duties.

I think the early buzz was about Hodgins, so Kumerow was overlooked or forgotten to some extent, despite the fact that Hodgins hasn't played an NFL game. One of the two will make the 53, and Kumerow is the odds on favorite because of his experience and ST ability.  I don't think it will be all that difficult to get Hodgins on the PS since he's a 7th round draft pick that hasn't played an NFL game, and he needs that experience.

I think the WRs will be Diggs, Sanders, Beasley, Davis, McKenzie, and Kumerow, with Hodgins and Stevenson on the PS.

Who do you think returns punts and kickoffs? McKenzie might be the PR but isn't handling both. Could Breida or Taiwan Jones be the kickoff returner?

I really think it is time Bills fans and McBeane start to consider carrying seven WRs. Don't ask me how. Especially with our weird and over-stacked DL it would be very hard. But I love that Kumerow is big and plays special teams. I bet he knows the O well as well. I have McKenzie as a lock and either the kick or punt returner (But not probably both....I think he would get injured doing that too much. Better to split the job between two WRs. Which brings me to Stevenson. He could be a good returner while he learns WR. I also love Hodgins as a WR. Because he is not only big, but long and athletic. A leaper. We need to start developing our own weapons and Kumerow, Stevenson And Hodgins are a good place to look. We also need to be deeper with weapons so we don't run out like we did last year. I think seven gives us the weapons we need. We are weak at TE, maybe carry just two? Have some on the PS to call up if needed. IDK?

I want 7 WRs and 11 DL. DL is such a mess. Do we keep Johnson who excels on STs? Obada seems too good to wave. Addison will cost us millions to wave. It's nuts.

Bottom line: The Bills need to be WAY better to beat the chefs in week five (and then again in Buffalo in January).

To do that we need more very good weapons on offense.

And much better defense all the way around.

(our STs faired rather well last winter, knock on wood.)

They won't keep 11 DL. And  your calculations  sound like 7,8 WR? And if the TE group is so WEAK why is that a reason to only keep 2? All the more reason to keep 3. I think your projections are off and would weaken other position groups . McKenzie might become the PR but the KR is likely a competition between Powell and Stevenson, unless perhaps Breida can do it.

  5. If Trubisky doesn't get many reps ....teams will have trouble evaluating him. If Fromm or Davis don't progress....how can we assume Trubisky won't stay in Buffalo?

Trubisky could end up being a starting qb this season if another team's starter goes down in training camp. A team like Washington or Houston could deal for him if their other options don't look impressive over the summmer. As much as I appreciate having a good backup, I would rather get a 2nd round pick from a desperate team.

LOL..you won't get a 2nd for Trubisky. And you assume Webb or Fromm can be trusted as the #2 QB? If Allen gets hurt, do you really want to rely on one of them? Get real...

Nice job. Swap out Johnson for Obada. Johnson has done very little to keep a spot. Agree with only keeping two QBs. Doyle is not making the 53. He will go to IR or get cut. Waste of a draft pick. That opens up another spot for a fourth safety.

Johnson has been an important Special Teams player ; wouldn't say he has "done very little".

I was doing an early projection of the 53 man roster for myself, and I was shocked how easy it was to find myself keeping 10 DLinemen. McBeane typically have a history of keeping 8 DL, but I would not at all be surprised to see 9 or 10 this year.

    QB: Allen, Trubisky
    RB: Singletary, Moss, Breida, Jones
WR: Diggs, Beasley, Davis, Sanders, Mckenzie, Hodgins
    TE: Knox, Hollister, Gilliam
OL: Dawkins, Williams, Morse, Ford, Feliciano, Boettger, Brown, Doyle, Lamp, Bates

DE: Hughes, Epenesa, Rosseau, Basham, Addison, Johnson
    DT: Oliver, Star, Harry, Butler
LB: Edmunds, Milano, Klein, Dodson, Matakevich, Adams
CB: Tre, Wallace, Johnson, Jackson, Neal, Wildgoose
    S: Hyde, Poyer, Johnson

    ST: Haack, Bass, Ferguson

Notable Cuts/PS/Trades: Antonio Williams, Christian Wade, Marquez Stevenson, Tommy Sweeney, Bobby Hart, Efe Obada (would really like to see Obada make the team), Justin Zimmer, Cam Lewis, Duke Williams, Jake Kumerow

What does your guys early roster projections look like?

I dont think they "need" a FB but Gilliam has ST value. Who do you have returning kickoffs and punts? I'm not sure about Doyle,Wildgoose and Phillips. I think Zimmer and Sweeney have a shot.

We almost let him walk in free agency. I think they're ready to live without him. Hodgins offers size and ball skills and has gotten some buzz this offseason. I predict Stevenson makes the team because Beane rarely cuts new draft picks and he can take on McKenzie's role. If Stevenson doesn't show anything in training camp then McKenzie is probably safe and they'll try and put Stevenson on the PS.

Ya think ? PS is Stevenson best bet...he isnt replacing McKenzie as a receiver .

    Zach Ertz? LOL

They already had two empty roster spots, now, three.

Had no idea this guy was on the team.   I wonder why they cut him before camp starts

Bills have lots of DL depth. Might be health-related. Jones missed 2019 with a knee injury and wasn't on a roster last year.

If we weren’t so crowded at WR, I’d love to acquire him and turn his career around.  Have him throw up a 10 reception, 150 yard game against the Hoodie

NOT gonna happen. If Bills acquired him, Diggs would go on strike.  No way they could make both of these guys happy.
