The thing is the data does still show that the best teams tend to be good on special teams. I did a comparison of the Bills $$s allocation to STs compared to SB winners a couple of years ago and they were pretty much right about on the average. Happy to crunch those numbers again at some point this offseason to see what has moved, but basically every team pays a few guys just to run about on special teams.

But, experience matters on Special Teams just as it does on Offense and Defense.

I admit I don't spend time analyzing ST stats;  but I have questioned whether the investment in the likes of Hines, Neal and Matekevoch is worth it.

They rarely play O and D but in case of an injury emergency, in a critical situation, I would prefer those veterans over unproven rookies.

Some of those guys have cap hits into the 2.5 3.5 mil range.

Lets say you sub out 3-4 of those for guys on rookie deals/ veteran minimum vets

You are probably looking at 6-10 mil in cap savings. I would say that’s a descent amount

You will still be paying NFL minimum to the replacements, from about 705k to 1.2 million each. With the example I gave you might save 3 to 4 million if you replaced Neal,Jones and Matakevich with lowest-paid players.

So, probably not 6 to 10 million saved and I dont know who the 4th player is you want to replace on ST.

Jones ,Neal and Matekevich total cap hit was about 6.2 million last season.

They are now all free agents so let's see what happens if Beane has to replace them all with rookies.

They do have some value as "position" players because of their experience.

Since Bass can kick 4 out of 5 (5 out of 5?) out of the end zone anytime he wants, and the point of punt and kickoff returns is simply to get the ball safely into 17's hands, why would the Bills tie up 10m+ in Neal, Jones, Matakavich, et al?   With Hines and Bass on the team, returns and kickoffs are non events.   I would prefer to take that cap space, load up on offense and therefore punt very little, taking that risk off the table as well.   Coaches talk all about the importance of special teams.  With long ball kickers and solid return guys, not sure I'm buying it.

You obviously are referring to COVERAGE guys, but, Hines and Bass can't do it all by themselves.

Smiley coached ST into a top unit,so,maybe he can get by with rookies replacing Jones, Matakevich, etc. But look at their cap hits; is there really that much to be saved?

Just think of gaining 5-6 starters who are high motor, lunch pail guys.  Versus two pre-madonnas that Beane totally whiffs on.  I’m just connecting the dots here.

You're dreaming if you assume they would get "5 or 6 starters" ,certainly not IMMEDIATE starters.

But,sure, plug a lot of day 2 picks in there, consider them nominally,  starters.

The odds of making a roster drop significantly for day 2 and day 3 picks.

Bills need immediate impact players. And,if you say Beane fails in the early rounds, why do you think he can draft well LATER? He either can draft ,or he cant.

This year's draft might be especially critical in light of Buffalo's cap situation.

I might consider a move down in the 1st,and don't forget the possibility of trading picks for veterans. That would ensure some value for a pick.

With Adam Henry added as a coach and the need to go with a greater investment on offense I wonder if we see something like this:

    QB Allen

RB Hines/Cook + Latavius Murray as a larger back for short yardage (1 mil salary in 2022)

    WR1 Diggs

    WR2 Beckham

    WR3 Davis

    WR4 Shakir/Mckenzie/2nd Round Pick

    TE Knox/Sweeney

    LT Dawkins

    LG 1st round Pick

    C Morse

    RG  Bates

RT Brown/ FA /3rd or 4th Round Pick

Now mind you most estimates have the Bills with about 30 mil in cap space with projected restructures on the way and cuts. ODB on spotrac is estimated contract at 13 mil although I do wonder after all the noise, lack of play, and injuries if that deflates down to 9-10 million. Also Beane said they were not planning on a major signing (granted GMs never are fully honest). They could probably structure the contract to space the cap hit later to protect themselves but you would need to commit for 3 years I would think for ODB. Also signing ODB means Poyer is gone and Edmunds for sure is gone while you have 10-13 million tops to fill those holes as draft usually is 7-8 mil in cap space.

On the flip side the offense has a lot more juice, you get a WR in the 2nd for the long term, the offense line gets younger help, and a guy like Murray is a nice big back.

This is just hypothetical and its fun, what are your thoughts?

You want a 33 year old running back? I don't

I also don't want a long term commitment to a WR that has been hurt and didn't play this year.

I'm not thrilled about adding  Murray and OBJ.

    Lazzard is too expensive.

McKenzie should be gone. Save the little money and find someone else. He's easily replaceable.

The Bills have to make some key acquisitions in the WR area. Guys that are very serviceable and can step in and contribute. Allen should be able to make them better.

McKenzie has a relatively small cap hit.  If you cut him, you're going to have to replace him, so why bother?

If you could do only one thing to improve the team for next season what would it be?

Oh and none of the fire so and so stuff,

Me, I would dump a lot of resources into improving the O-line, could be wrong, but I think that would cure a whole bunch of issues, combined that with a more mature offensive scheme, and we are on our way,

    what y’all got?

    So you have TWO suggestions

  9. You take this conversation, out-of context, from an  interview conducted by...who?

Have you looked at the dead cap money on Stef's contract? I don't think he is trade-able unless some GM starts smoking the same stuff as you. Then,of course, you would have to find another WR to bring the same chemistry and production. Good luck with that! Just trade Diggs for the sake of some silly bromance?

Like I always say; you can't force a team to trade with you, anyway.

But, hey,if you're drooling for a family reunion, why not bring little bro to Buffalo? That probably has as much chance.

  10. This is ridiculous and won't happen because  Bills have other needs. You could get value at LB,TE,S,or RB for example with those later picks but no guarantees those 4th and 6rh round OL picks amount to anything special

Numerous teams manage to "gel" their offensive line without going crazy overboard in ONE draft.

And how do you trade Saffold? He is a free agent.

    This lacks credibility.

$14 mil, uhhh no thanks. I think they said Motor would be looking for a contract for $5 mil

His salary is closer to 10,which the Bills would have to pay, but they wouldn't have to pay the bonus money which is 3 or 4 million this year. That's the Vikes responsibility.

And he might be willing to do so if it means playing with his brother on a playoff team with a top 3 QB. I doubt he takes a real discount unless the league forces it through market value, but who knows. The possibility of playing on the same team as your brother and winning a Super Bowl is an extremely rare opportunity.

Doesn't matter how warm & fuzzy it would make Cook feel. He won't take a significant cut to play with his brother in Buffalo. Why should he? Bills wouldn't need BOTH Cooks anyway.
