The defensive line is easily in worse shape. Its quite possible that they don't have a single starting caliber DE on the roster at this point, plus, Kyle Williams is adequate at best at DT and the depth at that position is virtually non-existent.
They've got problems on the OL, too, but that group isn't entirely hopeless. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating going with what they already have, but the Bills have fielded worse OLs on opening day during this decade than the one they currently have.
The question I have is where is the bigger drop off...
Monroe/J. Smith/A.Smith/Oher(#11) versus Beatty/Britton(#28)
or
Orapko/Brown/Maybin/Ayers/Jackson(#11) versus Sidbury/Barwin/Johnson/Kruger/etc...(#28)

First of all, they are guided by the lame duck Dick Jauron, arguably the worst long tenured head coach in the Super Bowl era. This alone would be cause for concern because everyone knows that he can't continue to do what he has been doing and keep his job. Unfortunately for him and us, he has been doing his best and it isn't even close to enough. Expect Jauron to try to be more aggressive and for the results to be worse because he isn't capable of coaching that brand of football.
Second, they have a fragile, physically limited starting QB, a very bad backup situation and nobody in development. Edwards will be hurt early in the season.
He will be hurt early because he has arguably the worst OL in the NFL in front of him. Seriously, look around the league and find a worse collection of OL. When Langston Walker is your best OL you have a serious concern.
Age:
The 4 best DL are all well on the backsides of their careers. Stroud, Schobel, Kelsay and Denney.....this unit was poor last year and is really poised for a big fallout. They all really are at the point in their careers where they should be backups or at best in a rotation with players of comparable or better talent. There is not a lot in the cupboard behind these guys either.
TO. I saw Dave McBride here talking about Owens as the best player on this team. That's not saying much, but even so, he's not. He's very old for a wr and has had declining production. I fully expect him to be nicked up in or before camp and nagged by injuries like you would expect from a player who is that old. Perhaps the key point though is that his hands are failing him. Anyone who remembers James Lofton as a Bill should remember that when the Bills let Lofton go he could still do everything he always could.......except catch the football consistently. The hands go first and TO lead the NFL in dropped passes last year.
The linebacker position is very slow and unathletic. Mitchell makes big plays, but he's not a very good all around player. Poz is a the opposite, he's solid but makes no plays. Who even knows who the other starter will be, but chances are it's not going to be a game changer and the backups are little more than special teamers.
The back of the secondary. There is no capable free safety on this roster. Unless you count Whitner as a free safety......which is a position he is worse suited for than SS.......holyshitt what a mess is brewing back there.
Perhaps the biggest sign of an implosion is the radical moves being made by and attributed to Russ Brandon. There appears to be an effort to add by subtraction as if the reason the organization has failed to win is because of a few guys who just aren't buying into the wonderful system in place. This situation is very reminiscent of what the Lions did last offseason.
I know a lot of you are counting on the draft and the June 1st releases to bolster this roster. Unfortunately the draft never supplies the kind of immediate help that a roster like this needs to get better now. Even the top picks will not lead this team. Not that this will keep the Bills from drafting for need instead of taking the best available player......that's what they do and it's the main reason they are so lacking in difference makers. Also, there won't be any June 1st cuts. I just mentioned this because for some reason people don't realize that June 1st ceased to be a key date about a decade ago and isn't even relevant at all since the last cba.
Lastly, a tough schedule in a tough division filled with teams run by instinctive, successful career football men.
I'd love to be wrong about this, but a year from now people will be wondering how any of us could have thought this team could be anything more than horrible. If Edwards goes down, and he will, this team is headed for 2-4 wins. The days of the team winning a handful of games by playing ultra conservative Jauron ball and taking advantage of young teams who are trying to get better are gone.
You hit a homerun. It's a depressing look at the upcoming season but I agree with everything you said.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/04/20/jaguars-si...eteran-wr-holt/
"The Jacksonville Jaguars made headway toward filling their void at wide receiver on Monday by signing veteran free-agent Torry Holt to a three-year deal worth roughly $20 million, according to Holt’s agent."

how can you say that without knowing what the draft choice is? how about if they get a 1st as well?
I missed the part about the draft pick. If it is a 1st, I'd change my tune.
-
Arizona gets hosed in that deal. A TE that can't stay healthy and a overrated and overpriced RB for Boldin who is a top 10 WR?
-
I think its going to happen. We will get a late round 1 pick and an early 2nd. Maybe an extra 6th or 7th too.
I would DEFINITELY do this
Any takers?
How many teams(other than the Bills) have a late 1st and early 2nd?
-
I think Maybin and Brown might fall well past #11. If I am the Bills I wait on DE until #28.
From the end of the 1st through mid 2nd I'd watch for: Michael Johnson, Larry English, Lawrence Sidbury, and Connor Barwin.
If defense is the pick at #11 I'd seriously consider Clay Matthews Jr.; we need help at OLB and Cushing, Lauriniatis, and Maualuga are all ILB's.
As far as I know, Cushing is an OLB.

i had season tickets in jacksonville....nothing went up the middle with henderson and stroud...and i mean nothing
Then why did they get rid of one of them and now looking to dump the other?
-
Here's mine(this assumes Orapko is gone)...
Ayers(rising up the boards and after Orapko, probably the best available to play in a 4-3)
Brown(above average pass rushing skills).
Jackson(viewed as more of a 3-4 end and not as much of a pass rush threat).
Maybin(too small for my liking. He added 20 pounds, but how will that effect his speed).
I's be okay with Ayers, Brown or Jackson, but if all that is left is Maybin, I'd look at another position instead...Cushing?

Just say NO to trading up! On a team that needs as much help as the Bills do, why give away draft picks to move up.
-
Waters wants to be paid $8M/year or thereabouts, from what I hear.
If that's true, so much for that idea.
-
Do the Bills have the cap space to fit both Scheffler and Waters, and if so, could each of them be acquired for a 4th round pick or would it cost more?
If this could be done, two need positions would be addressed and the Bills would still have #11, 28, 42 and 75 to address OLB, DE and OT.
-
Anyone feel that the Bills will either draft a player not expected to be taken at that point(#28 or #42) or even worse draft a player at a position which is not considered a "need".
If so, what is your worst nightmare in terms of this.

I can't wait to hear about Ralph's personal pick since the Rodney Wright selection was so impressive.

Who cares? Did you think we were Super Bowl bound with Melvin Fowler, Derrick Dockery and Jason Peters, and now we're not?
-
I'll be pissed if the Bills trade up in any round. The draft is too hit and miss to give up picks/players in order to get "their man". Oh by the way, the other reason not to trade up...this team has too many holes to fill

But the seats would be empty
The seats have been close to full for the last decade with the Bills sucking hind tit. Making some changes to remove underachievers and malcontents can only be seen as a positive from most Bills fans.
If the Bills can find a sucker to take on Kelsay's salary AND give us a pick in return(I'll take a 4, 5 or even a 6), it will be a great move.
-
Lets wait and see how it all unfolds. Lets say the Bills want to pull a trade with Parrish for somebody they're targeting and needed a 4th to close the deal. Now they have their extra 4th and a conditional next year.

This is the most fun you have had as a Bills fan since the Music City miracle season...We might not make it to the post season, but as fans, we are fueled in the off season....
What fun? I can't wait to hear about your "fun" plans for this weekend.

Lets see:
We could have had these picks: 1,1,2,3,3,4, and traded our 4th, leaving us with: 1,1,2,3,3.
Instead we take their 4th and trade it, leaving us: 1,1,2,3,4. Sure makes sense to me. Why would we want a 3rd rounder when we could have a 4th instead. Oh, i know, we got an extra 6th round pick. SUPERBOWL BABY!!!!!
Mind boggling! I can only hope that the report is incorrect. If not, this franchise may not make the playoffs for anther 10 years or so.
-
Possibly, hello Brian Waters and hello Tony Scheffler
So we took a 4 instead of a 3 so we could possibly trade the pick for one of the guys mentioned? Why not take the 3 and then trade them our own 4.
Bills are bottoming out
