Josh isn’t going to play his game in bubble wrap. He’s from a family of farmers, and those are tough people. They just get things done. They don’t make excuses. I love that about him.
It took McD years just to get him to slide sometimes. Josh isn’t stubborn, just a sincere desire to win. Last time I checked, he has mom than double the consecutive starts as the next QB down the level. I know that’s a concern as you get to feel invincible, but he’s delivered so far.

In hell before Pegula makes that mistake.

So, let me get this straight.
Many Bills fans complain continuously that Josh has to do everything on his own. That we aren't as talented as other top teams, so Josh has to put on his cape and play one-on-eleven (apparently).
Then we have a game that is a total team win. The offensive and defensive lines control the game and we run the ball a lot. They prove that there is a lot of talent around Josh actually. But now the issue is Josh didn't have enough passing yards, and we got stopped on some second down runs?
I have learned over the years that some people just will never be happy, no matter how much you try to do for them. I'm not saying we can never discuss problems with the offense, the play calls, or individual players performances. etc. But we just opened the season scoring 41 points and 30 points, respectively, against two very good defenses.
This offense is exactly what McDermott and Beane wanted since like Daboll's second/third season as OC. Don't you remember how many times McD tried to get the offense to be more balanced, get Daboll to run the ball more? We are a bigger, stronger, more balanced team now. We can play in a shoot-out with KC, or we can grind out rushing yards against physical teams (or poor teams). We can change our game plan according to our opponent (as weeks 1 and 2 showed us). We can now run a 4-minute offense to close out games (because we can run the ball better), etc.
Plus, the league has changed since 2019-2021. A lot of time was spent trying to shut down offenses like KC and Buf. The move to more cover 0, then to man coverage, etc. We couldn't continue with the aerial attack we had (in the same way), but not be able to run the ball well. The defenses dictated that players like Allen and Mahomes would need to be more patient and methodical. The defenses were keeping everything in front of them. So, the offensive style needed to change. Plus, we needed to be stronger and more physical (which we are now) to face the Cincinnatis and Baltimores of the world. We were much more what we used to call a finesse offense in the Daboll years. Now we can ground and pound when needed (without losing the ability to still have a prolific passing offense).
Just FYI
Daboll's Bills offense at it's best (2020-2021; 34 regular season games): Averaged 377.5 yards per game and 28.9 points per game.
Since Brady took over (mid-2023 to present; 25 regular season games): Averaging 350.8 yards per game and 30.2 points per game.
Playoffs:
Daboll (2020-2021) 3-2, averaging 30.2 points/game with 376.8 yards/game.
Brady (2023-2024) 3-2, averaging 28.4 points/game with 370.8 yards/game.
Pretty similar overall, but now our team is stronger and more multiple. We are no longer out physicaled by teams, we can run when we need to, change our game plan according to the opponent, fare better in inclement weather, we're not as predictable, etc...in my opinion. I don't think we have to worry about Brady and the offense.
P.S. Someone brought up that we had some struggles in the last few games (particularly Baltimore and Denver). Yes, before the Jets game, our last four opponents were Baltimore, Kansas City, Baltimore, and Denver. All three teams were top 10 defenses in both yards allowed and points allowed last year. Denver was 3rd in points allowed, K.C. was 4th, and Baltimore was 9th. Stands to reason that you'd struggle a bit more against better defenses. And yet, in those 4 games, the Bills still averaged 32 points/game. (Heck, even the Jets' defense was #3 in yards allowed last year and we just had 403 yards and 30 points against them.) But sure, good defenses are going to get some stops too---like on a second down run.
Folz, excellent post and spot on. I strongly prefer an explosive, tough, hit you from any angle offense, and when needed Josh comes out of the phone booth and puts on the cape. We have it, but just need to use it when necessary. Well, week 1 it was necessary.2 minutes ago, GunnerBill said:I don't think we have the receiving talent to have Josh tossing it all over the field. I suppose that goes to the heart of the debate. Any limitations that exist in this offense are less about the scheme and the playcalling to my eye than they are about the skill position talent.
It's also why despite generally being against paying running backs I saw the value in retaining Cook. He is by far our most explosive skill position player. I wish that weren't the case, but given that it is I think it's prudent to retain that.
GB, agreed to a point. We may not have a Justin Jefferson, but overall Coleman has delivered, Palmer is growing with each week synergy with Josh, Moore has made small contributions, Shakir is well Shakir, and Cook as you mention GB is one of the most dynamic RB’s this team has seen since Thurmon. (I didn’t add McCoy as we caught him later in his career).-

We’re scoring points, so I can’t complain too much—but doesn’t it feel like we have a lot of predictable 2nd-down runs that go nowhere and start slow? Came back strong vs. the Ravens, but it’d be nice to open things up earlier. Against the Jets it didn’t matter, but I’m still waiting to see more schemed explosive plays in the passing game, especially early. Similar issues as last year. What do you guys think?
I think any team that scores 71 pts. In two games warrants no criticisms whatsoever. The rushing game is a cat and mouse situations and opens up passing opportunities as they can’t assume well through most of the game. Some people just find it boring as they want Josh tossing it all over the field. I’m never going to complain at an avg. of 35.5 pts. Per game. I’m predicting we won’t be slowing down anytime soon with half of the Fish’ O Line on IR. The Fish are a dumpster fire.-

That's cool and everything. But the Bills don't exactly have a great record of successful 2 point attempts. At least as far as my old brain can remember.
Actually bud, in the last couple of years McD has one if the best records of 2pt. Conversions, and 4th down conversions in the league. Would you rather have Tomlin and punt all the time. He's not perfect, but the play has a low priority of success so it depends on what McD does vs. the avg. and the expected.

I get what you’re saying but personally I don’t think I’ll ever care about the Worthy/Coleman comparisons. They’re such extremely different players with such extremely different skill sets they might as well be playing different positions.
404, agreed two different toes of WR’s is unfair as one can argue whichever position that reflects their interests. The reality is both guys have done some unique things, and thus worked out for both teams. McBeane and Josh wanted Coleman. He had a good first game this year, and Worthy had some excellent plays for the Chiefs last year. One game doesn’t make a career, but a couple things I liked was his improved strength, his cuts for YAC, and his ability to get over the defenders.

I enjoy watching the trenches so will enjoy the All 22. Since we didn’t hear anything about missed assignments, and of course the well needed catch, it sounds like a nice start.
Prior to the season, the notion was that him vs. A. Anderson will provide more flexibility. Not that AA didnt do his job before this year, having an athletic, hard nosed power TE has value.
I look forward to seeing how Brady will weave him more and more into the offense.

Good for them, and hope they enjoy it. One of my best friends transplanted from Tampa to Denver several years ago. As far as the new Bills Stadium, I’m elated our culture will not change, but improve. Cutting out a ton of the elements, controlling wind, and a state of the art stadium is great, yet its still feels like Buffalo.

i didn't see this until too late. I would’ve said of in town, let me get a wheelchair and would’ve given you a ride. It does. Help in the tunnel, but could’ve got you to the entrance. You could always ask the staff to provide you with one of their own. The staff is normally pretty nice.

PD,
What a nice review. Virgil kind of coined the “A few thoughts in no particular order moniker”. Consider that as there is always, “Here are my thoughts” or whatever.
Sincerely, nice review. Shaw with the Rockpile Review, and Virg with the phrase above was something we all looked forward to each week for years.
Not a criticism, just a simple point to a new guy who is doing a nice job. Thanks for adding to the board.
Enjoythis week, amd hopefully we build on it Sunday against the Jets.

This is what I think of when I think of this game.

Or Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
Guys, it’s not a big deal. Just google the Bills schedule and it’s comes up in a heartbeat. The mods look out for us with everything else. Use youre browser.
Sure, I’d love it if they did this when the schedule launches, but it’s not going to happen. I choose to think of what they do for us.
you guys realize they are going to shut this thread down soon enough.

I enjoyed the series. Admittedly, it was my first Hard Knocks. I don’t need to see them firing people on camera. That’s cruel. In addition, we have a very well run team, and this series amplified my understanding of the team. They handled so well the team’s release of certain players.
These guys are class. To say it was boring, I wonder what people’s motivations are in what dirt want to see.

At the time of our first Super Bowl, I was with a Cavalry unit deep in the Arabian Desert for the First Gulf War. Kickoff was at something like 2:30am local time, but I was far out of TV or radio reach. The only thing we could weakly pick up sometimes on a shortwave radio was the BBC World Service, which didn't usually cover American sports. Nonetheless, I asked the soldiers on radio watch that night to wake me up if they heard anything.
Just before dawn, one of my soldiers shook me violently as I lay asleep, "Sir! Wake up! The Bills won! The Bills won!"
I jumped out of my cot and asked him the final score. But he seemed confused. When I pressed him, he admitted the signal from BBC World Service was full of static and he wasn't sure what the announcer actually said. Something about a last-second field goal.
Frantic, I called higher headquarters on the army FM radio but they hadn't gotten an update. So I glued myself to the shortwave radio, listening to the BBC. There was so much hissing and crackling, I only understood maybe 1 word in 10. But finally, hours later, came the crushing disappointment. To this day, I've never watched a replay of that game and never will.
Hondo, first thank you very much for your service. As my father said as he was in during the Korean War (Navy), freedom isn’t free.As far as that day, I had just moved to Tampa 5 days or so before and was with my fraternity brother who transferred to USF from Oswego. I moved to Tampa as was starting my Masters program and landed my first career job. Well as many of you know the Bills-Giants SB was at the old sombrero, and where On Bucs Drive (the now training facility was the Tampa Mall. The local radio station set up a Movie screen outside on the wall of Dillards (it might have been Macys) and 97 Rock had their vans and sound system where it was as loud as the stadium. I must have seen thousands of Buffalonians there and knew quite a few. My buddy, Joe’s friends were all Giants fans, so I was with the enemy. We arrived at 8am and brought four cases of beer, a charcoal grill, and lawn chairs. We had presidential type seating as right in the front of the screen, and had a lot of fun all day. It was so heart breaking seeing wide right, and all my buddies celebrating like crazy. Joe didn't have the heart to rub it in, and just put his arm around me. I had tears in my eyes, and he tried to console me. Hearing that stadium cheering in those final seconds ripped me apart.
That one hurt the most. Nevertheless, it was a fun day throwing footballs around, etc. and let’s just say we had to make another beer run at noon.
By the way, I just finished watching NFL Matchup, and the Bills Ravens matchup was their signature review, mostly Ravens focused. Cosell mentions at the end the Bills ran the ball 36 times in the playoff game, and states the Bills Danit 60+% of the time against the #1 rushing defense in the Ravens. The Bills controlled the clock, and he indicates it’s why the Bills won last January.
It will be interesting if we do the same tonight if we control the clock and time of possession, we can hide a little more the weak spot of our secondary.
As always Chandman, thanks for the memories. You are the best at that on our board.

It might sound corny or dumb @BillsFan619 But i have been separated from my family and friends up here in New England territory (Cape Cod) for almost a year. I am in a committed relationship that is also long distance now (it wasn’t at first.) It’s been probably the lonliest summer of my life. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Gestures like this go a very long way with a lot of people. Being considered part of the community of this legendary Bills forum is an honor. So thank you and God bless everybody.
im sure it will be fine Knuckles.. we've got you pal.
Go Bills.
BTW- im still trying after two years to understand the Chinese culture as my wife is Chinese, but she has friends whose husbands have been in china for years and they make it work with a long visit once a year. They worry about a lot more important things trying to get their entire family here and takes years as they hate the Chinese govt.. not the people.
With that said, life away front the people you love sucks, and is a sacrifice. Im sure they know how much you care.
