Everyone knows that Josh Allen needs to take another big step forward this year.  It is his third year in the same offense,  he should enjoy better O-Line play, and he will have more weapons to get the ball to this year.  If he isn't able to take a step forward this year, then we are probably looking at his ceiling and I don't think we win a Super Bowl with him under center.

The same thing can be said about Brian Daboll.  The offense has been the anchor around the neck of this franchise the last couple seasons.  Not all of it is Daboll's fault, the offensive cupboard was pretty bare when Daboll arrived.  That's not the case anymore.  With the offensive continuity and the players that Beane has given him, the pressure is squarely on Daboll to produce a much better offense.  He is out of excuses this year,  just like Josh Allen.

I think Daboll's biggest problem is that he just seems to outsmart himself at times. This year there should be no excuses for Lee "False Start" Smith being on the field, or DiMarco running routes 20+ yards down field, or Singletary disappearing for huge stretches of games when he is running effectively, or Cole Beasley disappearing for entire halves of games.

Daboll needs to find his groove this year and this offense needs to finally start scoring some points. Barring catastrophic injuries, he has no more excuses, the cupboard is full of talent.  Now Daboll needs to get that talent to execute.  I don't think Beane and McDermott bring him back for a year four if he doesn't get the job done this year.

And if he doesn't "take another big step forward" but instead performs mostly as he did last year, double digit wins and secures a play off birth with two weeks to spare, then what? We release him? Trade a guy who gets to the play offs 2 out of his first 3 years?

Do we want him to do better? Of course, I'd say that if he if threw for 60 TD's. I understand that people want him to be Pat Mahomes. But what if he doesn't throw for an arbitrary 300 yards in a game or satisfy the deep yearnings of the parishioners of the church of the Holy Completion Percentage and complete 65% of his passes? What if he just continues to have great plays, head scratching plays, winning drives late in the 4th, double digit wins and play offs?

Perhaps you misunderstood my point. I don’t have a problem with adding more weapons on offense, in fact I’m all for it. What I’m saying is that there is currently enough talent on offense that would allow Allen to prove he’s a franchise QB. There are no real glaring holes that should holding him back like years past.

Disagree. If Knox and Ford don't improve then we have pretty serious holes at RT and TE. Ford especially needs to be much, much better. Knox's highlight film plays don't offset the drops though I am optimistic that his drops are a thing of the past. I also think we need a RB who excels inside the tackles and in short yardage situations. We essentially filled the short yardage role with our QB last year and I don't think that is a good idea in terms of keeping our QB healthy. As for Josh proving he is a franchise QB. I think he already has. He can be better, sure but he more or less carried that offense last year and got us in to the playoffs with two games to spare in only his second year. Seriously, if all he does next year is the same thing, playoffs with two games to spare, are we ditching him and looking for another QB next year? Dumping a QB who gets you to the playoffs 2 out of his first 3 years?

Lois, just kidding, it was just too easy (actually like you’re avatar).  You make a good point in that we have Beasley, Singletary, Yeldon, and even McKenzie that could be used better in the screen game.  Hell, Brady made his career in the screen game first with Welker, then Edelman.

I like Gailey’s game planning as that is all he had with Spiller doing well in that style.  I never disliked Gailey, as he was doing his best with one least talented team in the NFL.  I’m not one to bash Daboll, and not saying you are either, but this is definitely an opportunity for growth.  I really like Allen, but I wonder does he think Allen can process quick enough to make the screen game work.  The best part of Brady has been between his ears.  I’m not asserting Allen can’t do it, but it makes sense as a plausible reason why Daboll hasn’t incorporated into his game planning.

Interesting First Round.  I would have bet Metzellars would have been on that list.  I met him as a kid in a convenient store in Blasdell.  I couldn’t get over how tall he was to a little boy.

    Thanks for sharing.

Good points but I don't understand what you men about Allen processing quick enough with regard to screens. Those are typically preset plays with only one target from the get go. All he has to process is whether to throw it in the dirt if the target is not available (covered, caught up in the trash, etc) or go for it. The problem with our screens is that they are not disguised well enough. That is due to play design and execution by the OL. The QB plays a small part in the deception but that had nothing to do with processing information quickly. Maybe we need a drama coach to show these guys how to give an Oscar worthy performance.

  4. Does make me wonder. Nate Clements was one of the best in the league and we let him go. Ditto with Antoine Winfield. Now maybe my memory is off and they weren't quite that good but either way, there was no fan uproar about it at all. They both got big bucks when they left, especially Clements. Why wouldn't the same thing happen with Tre? Different owners, different GMs? Hope so.

  6. Life these days is not depressing enough, by all means, lets pile on and indulge in this parade of horrors.

What's next, a top ten list of super models who have never been in my kitchen?

How rich I would be if I bought shares in google 20 years ago instead of the used Blazer I just had to freaking have?

    Serenity NOW!!!!!!!!

  7. If we play a lot of spread, and we do, then you are basically "starting" 4-5 WR's. Besides, with Beasley and Brown, we were like 2nd in the league in dropped passes. I have no issues with doubling down on fixing one of the most glaring weaknesses this team had last year. I especially like the idea of a large catch radius, red zone target type of WR.

But, if we don't go with a WR, I guarantee that I won't be pronouncing all who disagree with me to be idiots. Period.

Reasonable minds may differ and the draft is one long adventure into uncertainty.

  8. So last night, after draining a healthy glass of absinthe, you know, the favored drink of suicidal artists and syphilitic whores, I had a vision. I was surrounded by a dense, emerald green fog that blinded me until a cool breeze gradually pushed the fog further and further away. As the fog receded, I could barely make out the silhouette  of two football players. Slowly, the helmeted figures emerged and there he was, Josh Allen, resplendent in his red, white and vibrant blue Bills uniform. But he wasn't alone. Standing next to him was none other than Sam Darnold who though less resplendent than Josh, was also sporting a red, white and vibrant blue Bills uniform. Sam explained that in 2020, the Jets, being the Jets, tanked and then took Lawrence No. 1 in the 2021 draft. Josh insisted that the Bills pick up the recently released Darnold to be his back-up. I asked Josh how we did in 2020 but before he could respond, he started yelling at me to stop drinking so much and to let our barking dog in before the neighbors went crazy.  His voice and appearance started changing until he was gone and all that was left was my now irate wife who was not looking at all resplendent.

  9. None of us have any idea what the future holds at this point. I love football but with all that is happening, there is so much more to worry about that I have a hard time appreciating football even as a distraction. Bottom line, if things are anything like they are now come September, no one in their right mind would go to a stadium full of people. I hope it doesn't come to that for reasons far more important than football.

    Strange times.
