It could very well happen. In the video I posted yesterday (1 hr+ long interview with Rex on a podcast) he said he has always wanted to continue coaching but never got a single phone call or interview. It was in response to one of the guys saying he was shocked Rex left coaching. He mentioned that he reached out to Dallas last offseason to be DC thinking that it would give him a loaded defensive roster and a way to become a HC again down the line.

I thought the same, that he was happy being out of the grind. 47:45 (ish) is where Rex talks about wanting to get back into coaching... Interestingly, he also says he never wanted to be out of coaching but nobody ever called.

Rex Ryan wants this job badly, to the point where he's basically openly campaigning for it now on the air. It might come down to who to hire: Option A: Rex, the guy who honestly had the most success of any Jets HC in recent memory (2 AFC Title Games) and obviously has a passion and desire for the job Option B: Some relatively unknown offensive assistant coach who will take any gig I forgot the part about Hackett... I remember back when the Aikman, Kelly, Marino, Young, Montana, Elway QB group retired there was a lot of talk about the league sort of being in a QB drought, without the marquee names to make the games seem bigger. Then along came Manning and Brady with Big Ben and Rivers and the league had the next generation of superstars to drive rivalries and ratings. The Big Ben vs Manning or Brady games were a fun undercard, but the heavyweight matchup was Brady vs Manning in the playoffs. I think that's where we are now. There are a lot of great teams and great players, but Mahomes vs Allen in the playoffs is the one everyone wants to see. It's also a lot more even at 4-4 overall. Regular Season Allen 4-1 Playoffs Mahomes 3-0 Manning won the playoffs matchup series with Brady 3-2, although Brady dominated the regular season matchups. There's a lot of similarities, and we're in the early stages still of this rivalry.

When they fired Saleh their season ended. Whatever you might say about him, Saleh had his defense playing well on a consistent basis. His "DC" is not a guy who was truly running the D. Now suddenly that "DC" has to actually run the D, or have an even less experienced assistant D coach do it, while also taking over as HC in the middle of a disaster. With Saleh, the Jets are 5-6 right now, or maybe 6-5 and right in the mix for the 7 seed or even actually in the playoffs at the moment. Colts are the 8 seed with a 5-6 record right now. Broncos are the #7 at 6-5. People forget that we always go from "it'll take 11 wins to even make it!" to a 9-8 team playing in the Wild Card. It's like clockwork.

Don't discount the possibility of Rex Ryan returning to coach the Jets

Shakir must be re-signed. Pay the price, get your ticket for the show! He's our Edelman. Always open, catches everything thrown his way, moves the chains. That is more valuable than saving some money for a different position. Patriots won at the end of Brady's career with Edelman and Gronk as weapons. When Edelman was out that team really struggled.
