I would agree if it was a 2024 2nd... I know Rick Spielman is saying this may be the best WR Draft, heck even the best Draft overall in NFL history. It's the perfect storm of the covid and NIL fallout... This is a crazy good Draft year.

You can just move it again - or the first in 2025 - to get players in this draft.

This kind of stuff always makes me chuckle when I read it.  Chiefs defense stepping up in the playoffs is as responsible for their superbowl wins as their offense is.

Where is this supposed superstar receiver we just traded whenever we play the chiefs in the playoffs?  oh yea….locked down by the chiefs secondary lol

Chiefs also traded the guy who always locks him down too 🙂

Beane needs to earn his money now.  Go get a top 4 WR in this draft (Harrison/Nabers/Odunze/Thomas Jr)

Grab another in the 3rd via trade back in the second.  Maybe a Legette falls.

Go into the season with a WR room locked down for the next 3 years and build a damn championship team

I think its 1 and 4 probably.  Still needing to get some younger contributors on the defensive side of the ball with the 2nd pick.

I think 2025's 1st is in play to try and get up and get your guy, and having 2 2nds in 2025 makes that easier to potentially stomach.

Teams can do whatever they want, we’ve seen teams include cash in trades before.

You cannot trade cap space.  It would likely get negated as a violation of the CBA.  You can trade the player and their contract, and i suppose u could include cash, but that isn't going to expand their cap pool.

But teams can go outside of that formula. It literally happened when Texans traded Osweiler to Cleveland just to get his guaranteed money off their books.

That was cleveland acquiring base salary guarantees though.  They acquired his contract like any other trade.  They just had a ton of cap space to eat it.

Yeah, and I was saying all offseason I felt there was no way we would trade Diggs before the draft and take on that much dead cap hit unless something behind the scenes forced the issue.  And thus far, nothing has come out that would qualify as significant enough to make this move.

So it makes me wonder what we are going to find out now that Diggs has been moved.  Seems like this had to be an "addition by subtraction" move in Beanes eyes to take on that dead cap and not even get a pick in this WR rich draft back.  I mean he didn't even wait until after June 1st when the cap was less of a hit which would have made more business sense given we got no picks back in this draft.

So I am really curious to what we are gonna hear that was going on behind the scenes that he had to make this move and take this weak compensation back.

I assume they aren't going to trash an outgoing player.  Thank him for his time, his contributions, his effort - and just indicate that you wanted to go a different direction.  If he wants to chirp - let him.

I assume the valued the draft capital to move up this month more than the cap burden savings of waiting until after the draft.

Yup - plus you can't trade diggs to anyone.  But there are teams in the top 10/15 that would absolutely value an extra 1st round pick in 2025.  Doing this trade to acquire 2 2nd's in 2025 makes it a beat easier to stomach losing a 2nd 1st rounder.

Regardless of whatever behind the scenes stuff played out, and whatever his feelings are about the team, I’ll say this:

    Thank you Stef.

Yeah - great player here. Never got over the top, but anything other than thank you for the contributions isn't really fair to the guy.

That's the "by the book" breakdown.

Houston can take on any amount they want, and even trade us cash for a player.

We'll have to see how this shakes out.

Cash doesn't affect the cap space taken out.  It would just... pay for stuff.

I believe they can still spread cap hit over 2 years though.

You can't trade cap space, and you can't trade dead cap.  It is money that was already paid and using bonus models to spread it across multiple years.

Says who? Link to the financials?

Dead cap is dead cap.  It's roster bonuses, restructure, and signing bonuses.  You can't trade it - its basically compensation that was spread over several years.

All base salary, workout bonuses and per game active bonuses are acquired by the new team.

Houston bent us over the tree stump and ***** us dry.  Bills still eat the dead cap, so this deal makes absolutely no sense.  Complete fail by McBeane.

Farewell Stefon Diggs, and we thank you.

There is no way to... trade the dead cap.  It is money already paid to diggs.  They acquire his base salary for 2024 - which we couldn't cut since it was at least partially guaranteed.  You can still split the dead money across 2 years which i assume we do.  This wasn't the worst contract on the books since we have von miller, but there is no trading von for much of anything at this point since his value is 0 and he's expensive as hell.

I don't mind trading Diggs and I like the cap relief next year... I think they were just done dealing with him tbh...

But the compensation is terrible and I don't care what anyone says... Not getting something in 2024 is a massive failure for Beane because this may very well be the best WR Draft in recent memory. Sure Beane can dig his way out of it. But come on... He could not even get them to throw in a 3rd this year? Houston has 42, 86, 123 and 127 this year! He could not get ONE of those picks in a WR heavy Draft? It's not great...

You can now more confidently move a 2025 1st round pick as you now have minnesota and our own #2s.  Not every team can absorb Diggs cap hits (or wants to), but every team picking in the top half of the first round will have interest in a 1st or 2nd round pick in 2025 in a move-down scenario.

This is a mess, but now if we don’t take WR’s in the 1st 2 rounds, we are f’d up.  We can’t make it on what we have, but I know he’s on the wrong side of 30.

I think with 2 1sts and 3 2nds in the next 2 drafts - you have ammunition to move into the top 10 of the draft without giving up too many of your 2024 picks.

Poyer and Hyde dropping into deep coverage (again....after just getting burned underneath by Hill) on the Kelce play defies understanding.  At least Poyer was able to make contact....after Kielce caught the ball and called timeout.  lol nice.  another credited tackle.

KC called timeout the previous play (and we used our stupid defensive timeout to freaking boot) - like you had SOOO much time to just be like.  There are 8 seconds.  2 rushers - everyone else in man, and hold immediately off the LOS.  They will call holding and KC probably lose the time on the clock.  You can only usually do it once before they'll call the intentional hold foul.  After that itll be first and 10 and potentially as little as 0 on the clock for a hail mary at midfield.

Definitely not Dline, the Ravens and 49ers had one of the best and got held like crazy with zero holding calls. O-Line maybe but WR is still number 2.

Yeah, the only reason I'd lean o-line is just because it keeps your shiny expensive QB healthy.  Not to mention the Chiefs just won a super bowl with like no one at WR, and an elite offensive line.  It also has the bonus effect of helping establish a good running game.  Being able to sometimes run the ball effectively is a huge counter for teams built to stop your passing attack.

I'll also say it is hard to find a recent super bowl team that didn't have a strong defensive line as well though.  Maybe the 2018 patriots?  I wouldn't say it was a particularly bad group though - Guy is solid, Flowers was in a pre-injury prime, Malcolm Brown at the nose, Wise in his 2nd year.  Definitely some talent in that group, and you could do a lot worse.

2016 Falcons are probably the last mediocre defensive line (and defense) to even make a super bowl.

likely a vet minimum to give them a baseline 4th DT after Oliver, Jones and Johnson. I'd be surprised if he ends up making the 53. But if they don't land a DT anywhere in the draft maybe he has a shot.

Yeah.  You go into camp with 90.  Assume a pick, maybe also some UDFA's.  He's there to try and play his way on the roster, or at the very least push the rookies to earn their spot.

I realize he had two major injuries, but...I wouldn't classify a torn ACL or a popped achilles as "durability issues". Both are freak accidents that can happen to anyone, even the most "durable" players.

But they do carry a decent probability of reoccurrence, not to mention the possibility of sapping skill (long layoffs) and explosiveness.
