    Allen

    Dawkins - McGovern - VPG - Torrence - Brown

    Cook - Davis

    Kincaid - Knox

    Coleman - Samuel - Shakir

This could very well be our core offense for, at least, the next 2 years.

I'd agree that if we all rationally step back and look at that potential Offense, that there is adequate investment around Allen.

I wouldn't say that they've gone above and beyond for him, but I also wouldn't say they've left him out to dry.  Looks to me to be about average of what they could do and reasonably expect Allen to elevate everyone around him.

All things considered, Buffalo has spent a fair amount of draft capital on offense as well as defense.  WR, C, RB this year.  TE and RG last year.  RB and WR the year before.  I'd like to see one of these players just be "the guy" though.  My expectation is kincaid breaks out, but i also think shakir is going to turn some heads this year and officially graduate to full-time starter status in a more impactful way than gabe was ever able to.

I'm not too worried about the safety position because Poyer and Hyde were noticeably slower last year, yet we still had a top ranked defense.

I think Rapp is the odd man out at safety. He showed very little in the way of coverage skills for us last season and I was surprised that he was re-signed. He'll still probably get some reps as a big nickel and in 3 safety looks.

I'm more worried about our depth at outside cornerback considering our only option behind Benford and Douglas is Kaiir "Healthy Scratch" Elam

I thought both rapp and edwards deals were mainly depth.  Neither deal was even top 10 of what was given out in free agency and from an AAV perspective both are below the top 32 at S.

Interested to see what Elam can do with a new secondary coach and defensive coordinator.  Hopefully he's coming to camp ready to rock.

Yes, Pat and Josh being 8th and 9th on this list should be adjusted after this season.

Why?  They get the benefit of massive endorsement deals much like Brady.  I don't know that they're chasing dollars in the same way.

I mean we got a highly motivated player who just had his livelihood taken away and now he’s getting another shot with a top QB. Let’s see if he takes advantage

He's likely in competition with Hollins in that role we never seem to be able to fill (Kumerow, Sherfield) - you'd eat dead cap on hollins, but you'd fill in with a lower salary so it's probably a wash.  Also potential practice squad injury reserve if he looks the part.

... Something tells me we're not "done" at the position with this signing though 🙂

Well, we'll see.  Either way, barely beating NE on the merits of a defensive TD, because their offense sucks, while putting up only 20 offensive points, 14 having been from the D setting us up at their 14 also, can be spun anyway we want, but it cannot possibly be spun as having been good.  Our performances on either side were nothing special in that game.  On a side note, NE put up their 1st and 4th best scoring games on our 4th ranked D.

Same for the Chargers who featured an offensive roster of talent that would have rivaled the worst of any team on the season had it been there all season.  Our D also did not play well, nor did our O against their 24th ranked D, and again, we needed a last-minute FG to beat them.

Putting up a mere 14 offensive against Miami, a team we've owned, was the worst offensive output since 2018 in Allen's 7th overall start.

In four of our last five games we didn't even average over 20 PPG offensively.

That's not a good harbinger going into this season.  Then factor in the draft not really assisting that.  Coleman replacing Diggs & Davis isn't going to account for 14 TDs and half of Allen's yards.

Again, if those regular season games under Brady were extrapolated out to a full season, Allen would produce 4,143 Yards, 24 TDs, 17 INTs, 244 YPG, and a rating of 85.5.  If that were to occur no one will be happy as it would be only marginally better than his numbers in 2019 with twice the INTs.  It's a very difficult argument to suggest that Brady was or will be an improvement.  It's also quite possible that the reasons for the positives in his style were due to, not in spite of, Dorsey's influence.  We simply don't know.  We will see.

You  mention "crunching the numbers," but the game is about scoring and moving the ball.  "Down the stretch" when we needed every single win to make the playoffs much less win the division, we played incredibly poorly, on both sides quite frankly.  We played two pretty talentless teams along with Miami, where our offensive performance was the worst since Allen's first game (a loss) to them.  Again, not a good harbinger.  To suggest that The narrative about Brady being so much better than Dorsey simply isn't true from a scoring and ball movement perspective.

I didn't care for Dorsey, but Brady's raw, and whether or not he straightens that out this season, a tall task with a defensive minded head coach breathing down his neck for him to conform to that approach, remains to be seen.  That's the primary problem with our team as most see it, we don't have any particular expertise guiding the offensive side.  But we can't say yeah, we scored fewer points on average, didn't move the ball as well, our QB saw his stats nearly halved in scoring with his efficiency metrics plummeting to near all-time worstsbut the OC is better.  That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, particularly when that QB is the only reason you're doing anything.

Of course the jury's out, so your take may quite possibly be true.  All I'm doing is pointing out the falsehoods and inconsistencies in the established narrative.

I think the time of possession metric can be somewhat overrated...  However... in games against Jax, cincy, and Denver - Buffalo had substantial disadvantages on time of possession.  And those were games where our defense looked the most beaten.

Either from inability to run the ball against the jaguars and bengals, to the turnover fest against denver, that was something that they prioritized under brady.

Usually improvements on TOP are attributed to a few things though -

    • More effective run game
    • Improved 3rd/4th down conversions
    • Defensive stops/takeaways

The game plan and execution on offense vs KC in the playoffs was Brady's best work bar none. And realistically it could only have been done w a QB like Allen.

I do believe that is the style this team wants to play at this point. Unfortunately as shown by the result even a perfectly executed ball control game script doesn't beat the Chiefs in the playoffs.

The defense was able to get 2 stops... and 0 entering the 4th quarter.  It's very difficult to win when you don't get stops.

I think the Bills feel the Cole Beasley role may be over-represented on the current roster with Khalil Shakir and the FA acquisition of Curtis Samuel (not that these guys are playing at Cole's level at present, but then, likely neither would McConkey)

It's also notable that one reason Beasley and Josh had that success in 2020 was that Brown was a vertical threat and Diggs fast enough to also stretch the field.

The weakness of that group, was guys who were strong enough to out-play physical coverage and to challenge for 50-50 balls.

I think this is it.  In our most recent playoff losses, our WR have 100% been out-physicaled by "sticky" coverage.  I think the Bills are trying to become a more physical, powerful team offensively.  Whether they've got the right guys for that, time will tell but I can't fault the logic that it's insanity to try the same thing and expect different results, therefore the Bills are going for some different qualities in their player personnel.

Aside, but what's super-frustrating to me is after the Zebras allowed KC to hold and shove and mug our WR all game in the AFCCG, the Superbowl crew of Zebras flagged the hell out of KC's secondary for the same behavior, helping Tampa to the win.

It's also a hell of a 2-high counter punch to be able to just consistently run the ball down the other teams throat.  We have better counters to 0-blitz teams with big dudes who can win 1x1 battles.  I think we'll struggle with "sticky man" at times, but again the best counter to that is to occasionally just throw it over there.  The reason we get fewer PI/DH penalties than other teams is largely because we don't throw it at them.  The other counter to "sticky man" coverage is to just have a bigger WR who can fight through that.

  7. I think Buffalo might be trying to prioritize being a more physical team, especially come playoff time.  The recent playoff losses have been as much to do with an inability to control the LOS on either side of the ball as much as anything else.  You want to stick to our pass catchers and hold?  Well we now have multiple ways to counter and create YAC on shorter passes - either with size (knox, kincaid, coleman), pass catching backs (cook and davis), and quickness (Shakir, Samuel).

Though the Mafia spin doctors have been working 24/7 to have you believe there hasn’t been a draft go this well for a team since what Sonny Weaver Jr pulled off for the Browns in 2014, there’s no doubt we lost a lot of talent, leadership and experience. What does a successful season look like for this depleted roster? Could we say top 2 in division and wild card is legit expectation for this crew or am I too optimistic?

I'd say those are legit expectations.  Considering what buffalo was able to accomplish with the volume of injuries a year ago and a tough schedule, i wouldn't put it past them to win the division again.

  9. I am open to this depending on compensation (you aren't getting any of my next 4 picks this season)... and I would still want to get a WR at 33.

Truthfully this guy is one of my favorite players to watch in the league, and he'd be an absolutely lethal player in this offense.  I think Brady/McD/Beane know this so you have to consider it if you can make the math work.  Doing it means Shakir is probably playing a bit more boundary, and other Samuel is probably used a bit differently.

If there's a guy they love, then sure, they should stay put and grab him.  But if they have McConkey, Mitchell, Franklin, Coleman all sort of ranked similarly on their board, then I think they should move back a bit to increase the value of one of their later 2nd or 3rd rounders.

Certainly possible.  There's going to be another run - then i think our next one will be a move up in the 4th round for another.

If you're not going to take DeJean, then this scenario makes the most sense.  I really hope Beane is able to pull off a trade back.  The other option is taking DeJean and trying to move back up in the 2nd round to grab a guy like Franklin or Coleman.  I assume both of those guys will be gone by pick 60.

I'm just concerned if you move back and NE takes the WR you want.  Or the chargers.  You've moved back twice... get the guy you want because he won't be there at 60, and might not be there at 37.

Some believe that DeJean is a future 4-5x all-pro.  If Beane views him as that I don't see how he could pass on him. Very likely is the BPA at this point as well.

But if its at the cost of a guy you want (say troy franklin), is it worth it? Because NE picks right after us, has a big need at boundary WR, and had a top 30 visit with him.

Dejean at 33. Trade up in the 2nd with next year's second, the acquired third and one of the 5th rounders, pick up WR1.

Pick up WR2 at 60 or with a minor trade up.

    It's definitely doable.

Depends what you can get from feeling out NE - they pick at 34.  But Franklin being one of their top 30 visits (and one of only 2 WRs they brought in) makes me think he will be our pick at 33 if he's the one we want from this group.

Yeah, there are several that would at least compete to start year 1.  And if they wanted to lean on the Vets more and let one of them learn they at least bring much needed depth as we have no one behind those 2 that would be good options if one went down.

I feel like between rapp and edwards - they should already be considered depth.  Bringing in a Simmons or Jackson is an immediate upgrade.  Hell, i feel like Hyde is better than both of them.

I'd take this all day. Not sure why people will grab pitch forks if you can get a guy that might have a higher ceiling than poyer/Hyde in thier primes in the 2nd. I'll admit I wanted Leggett but if beane uses the ammo to trade back up and still get a guy like ladd or baker and Cooper I'd be excited.

    Isn't he a corner though?
