  1. I can't believe it. My Bills Backer bar here in Nothern VA couldn't get the game on their HD receivers and actually went to their employees' houses and snatched some older boxes and brought 'em in so we could all watch the game.

Direct TV way over-charges for NFL Sunday ticket, and it is absolutely absurd that they could be down for every single opening day game until the 3rd quarter this year. I think 100% that people who paid for NFL Sunday Ticket deserve a refund for this week without question. Today was unacceptable- period.

  2. I was agreeing with you and talking about the OP. The OP, by virtue of the , is apparently trying to make fun of a thread from last November in which some people wanted to see the Bills be more active in trying to put 3-4 defenders on the field, and one of those players was Gibson. The context was that this was in November when it was obvious to everyone that the switch to the 3-4 defense was not going well and fell far short of the miracle cure for the Tampa-2 defense that some had predicted in August of last year. The point about Maybin is that it totally undermines the poster's point. Instead of picking up a failed Gibson (who looked the part of a 3-4 defender on paper), the Bills stuck with the Aaron Maybin project. Maybin himself was just cut, so the fact is both were failures and gambling on one or the other wouldn't have mattered much in the long run. Capice?

Ah, I see the  now. I thought you were being sarcastic saying that we clearly should have gone after FAs because it would've been better than our constant "development" of players like Maybin. Since that seemed completely unreasonable (given our current situation at LB), your post above makes far more sense to me.

  3. This is yet another example of why context is vitally important. Should Bills fans witnessing the futile efforts of one of the worst defenses in the NFL discuss possible moves that might have helped it get better? Apparently not. It's much better that they stuck to the plan of developing Maybin.

I don't think White, Moats, Batten, Coleman, Sheppard, or even Carrington are as bad as Maybin. How can you even equate my statement to such a situation? "Evaluating" is much different than waiting for two years for a 228lb 4-3 DE to make a miraculous transformation because the prior regime decided to invest half the team (exaggeration) in him. To constantly ask why the Bills haven't signed every FA released by a respectable team regardless of track record and position is bizarre to me.

  4. Park at Pittsford Mendon HS- rarely crowded and usually on a quick cycle. I always stood on the fence after practice for autographs. Players don't all sign autographs, usually it's just a couple here and there that will do it on their way back in from practice. I bet you could draw Marcell over if you hold up your jersey ;) Players have their own markers.

  5. Caught this interview on the way to work, and decided to post a brief summary. I was surprised Czabe had Fitz on due to the fact that he is pretty down on the Bills since, well, forever. Anyways, not too much on the Bills current season information, but interesting non the less:

    1. Czabe mentioned that Ryan Fitzpatrick was the "5th smartest person in football", and asked Fitz if he wanted to dispute that ranking. Ryan said that he didn't think the other four guys had the course load he had at Harvard (the identities of the other four persons allegedly smarter were not mentioned).

    2. Asked Fitz about the Miami scandal. Ryan said that "all the people out there saying this goes on at all schools, I can guarantee this doesn't happen at Harvard". Mentioned that they don't have athletic scholarships there. Czabe then brought up the common complaint that is kicked around "college football is a full-time job, I don't have time to study excuse, you seem to have had time to do it". Fitz then also points out that he didn't have to support his entire family either, that he was fortunate to have had his parents help him so he could focus on school, not everyone is that lucky.

    3. Czabe mentioned the trade of Evans, cutting Maybin, says "The Bills aren't exactly in the running for the Super Bowl, are they?". Fitz then talked alot about the philosophy we have heard from Nix and Gailey about finding guys who need an opportunty and getting them in there, and moving out those who they can get something for.

    4. Czabe mentioned the good game by the defense vs. the Bears, citing the 9 sacks. Fitz says the defense is much more "stout" this year, with the additions of people like Marcell Dareus, and believes that they will be much improved this season.

    5. Lots of back and forth about the Beard. Czabe asked about the status of the beard so far, and Fitz says it's as long as it has ever been for training camp. When asked if he will keep it throughout the season, Ryan says yea, although attempts will be made to keep it trimmed down. The radio hosts asked him if he wants to surplant that college kid with the crazy long beard as the best beard in football, and Fitz laughed and said that he didn't think he could go that far.

    6. When asked which condition was harder to overcome, being a 7th round draft choice or coming from a small school, everyone agreed that small schools, especially the "smart" ones was a harder obstacle to get over. Fitz also mentioned that he personally felt like early in his career people questioned where his desire for football ranked, due to the fact that he got an awesome education.

    7. Czabe asked about Stevie Johnson and what he was like. Fitz mentioned the 'plan' again, and that he knew right away that Stevie had major talent but was not seeing the field due to T.O. being there. He reiterated the fact that the guys on the team seem to like the fact that it doesn't matter if you are a 1st rounder or undrafted, if Gailey and Nix believe in your ability, then they want you on the field.

    8. Czabe was interested in how T.O. did in the lockeroom. Ryan said that he never had even a small issue with him at all, but that he felt he was also likely on his "very best behavior". Said that he has worked with some great recievers, Holt, Bruce, 85, T.J. T.O., Evans and now Stevie and they all think they are open every play! So Czabe asked him 'when you are watching the game films on monday, do you ever say, Look dude your totally covered there, you ain't open?". Ryan says yeah, but the one time you do throw it when they are covered, they are essentially proved right anyway!

That was about it, as I said, not much real football stuff that I remember, but overall, Fitz came off as a very well spoken, and humble kind of guy. SOunds like he'd be a cool guy to hang with and drink a few beers actually, and comes off like he would actually do that with a fan. Just my opinion.

Man, he probably has 0 time for fun outside of football. He has two little kids.

  6. DJ will have the last laugh when Cleveland lands a wild card spot and we just miss out on Luck with three wins vs Bengals two.

Regardless of Cleveland's overall performance, DJ is a pretty darn good DC. Horrible, conservative, piece of crap HC, but a good DC.

  7. A few of the pubs that came out when Levitre was drafted said his best position might have been the only one he didn't play (center). Perhaps they're working him there with the thought that if Rinehart shakes out as a good guard he could LG, Levitre C and Wood RG...just a thought.

One can dream...I think they're just trying to see how versatile their depth is, since they have so little of it.

  8. Not buying it. Just because those teams don't have the longevity of incompetence that the Bills have is irrelevant. What is relevant is that those teams hit rock bottom, and then in one year rebuilt into a playoff team.

I find it hard to believe that you can think the 1-15 dolphins were a few good players away from making the playoffs. Or the 2007 Falcons, for that matter, given the mess they had with Petrino and Vick.

The NFL is filled with imperfect teams. Each off-season, you need to draft well, sign FA's if possible, and get stop-gap players to make due at positions of weakness. Even the Steelers, who build through the draft, had to go out and get some o-line vets off the garbage heap last season to be gap-fillers (Flozell Adams, Jonathon Scott).

The Dolphins ran a gimmick offense that produced a single season of winning. They also apparently were one player away from winning with Pennington (but it is proven that they are STILL rebuilding, because they quickly regressed). The Falcons went from Harrington to Ryan from 07-08, and from 7-9 to 4-12 from 06-07 after losing Vick and their coach. For what it's worth, there are many who think that the make or break for Buffalo this year is a hole at RT and QB. So in many people's eyes, it can be the difference of one player. But even if this is true, Buffalo had way more holes than a QB or RT at the beginning of the off-season, and two years ago the holes were all over the front office and coaching staff as well. I don't see what's so difficult to understand about this. Our franchise isn't on a downward trend, it's been marinating in the mildew of the basement for years.

  9. Yes.

Atlanta rebuilt in one year with a new regime, and and made the playoffs.

Miami rebuilt in one year with a new regime, and made the playoffs

The Jets rebuilt in one year with a new head coach, and made the playoffs.

Some might argue that 2008 Ravens were a rebuild with a new head coach after the state that Billick left them; that might be a stretch. But they went from a 5-win team to a playoff team in one year.

Is all of this true? These teams were devoid of talent in nearly every category? Their front office was a disaster? They had endured 10 years of bad draft choices and personnel decisions?

Out of any of the links below, what team's records actually show a complete sustainable change from being in complete despair for 10 years to being in the playoffs 1 year after the new regime entered? They all built off of what was already there (ATL), didn't really improve (NYJ), or improved for one year (MIA).

A new coach and a few "missing piece" players is not a rebuild.

Our team has been literally gutted and rebuilt from the ground up to GM. Rebuilding is rebuilding, not remodeling.

  10. They averaged 23 ppg last year (we were 17.7) and had the league's best running game (by a wide margin), whereas we were worst at stopping the run.

They beat us in wek 1. We bet them by 3 in the rematch.

Last year at this time, the board was enraged with and scoffing at the national press who predicted 4 or fewer wins. Most argued that, with the new coaching staff, Spiller, etc., "there's no way we finish worse than with DJ." Now, of course, with just over half as many wins as DJ, the new staff was just "finding their way". And now--"No way we aren't better than last year".

    "This crap tends to recirculate".

...And I'm sure they had a reasonable thought pattern that led them to believing we'd win more than the year before. They were wrong. Noted. However, in a discussion at this time of year which is based only on the prior year's performance and what we have now as opposed to then, the power-ranking argument is quite weak. In other words, I'm not saying my predictions will turn out to be correct, but from a logical reasoning standpoint, based on last year's performance and the latest additions/subtractions it's pretty unreasonable to say we're going to be worse this year.

  11. Here is another wrinkle......

    http://www.drafthistory.com/years/2011.html

In round 2 of this draft, we selected a corner at #2. Nix said that he had numerous trade down offers in every round.

Defensive backs were selected at #18 and #28.

Offensive Tackles were taken at 14, 17, and 31. Pitt and Indy each took one by the way.

My point? How much did they have to love Williams? It seems like they could have addressed OT AND CB in round 2 with a trade down.

I hope that Williams can live up to all of this.

...my first guess would be that Williams was more highly rated than the CB and/or O-lineman they could have taken in his place. I think it's obvious that Nix refused all trades because he wasn't willing to give up our early picks in each round because we needed the value and the sure-fire picks more than anyone else. To say we could have had both positions in one round is probably accurate, but you have no way of knowing if those players would have been reaches at their respected picks. He did what needs to be done in the mid-stages of a rebuild- he decisively fixed multiple holes contributing to one major problem, and he did it with the highest-value, lowest-risk picks he could. ...Who has room for risk when they don't have a team to begin with?
