  1. With all due respect, the OP started this thread talking about the +/- margins of NFL teams in 2010. He then stated the Buffalo Bills had the worst margin. He then supplied Ryan Fitzpatrick's career numbers, which, as far as I can tell, have no relevance to the 2010 turnover margin. He then supplied only the number of interceptions and fumbles Fitzpatrick had in 2010 - under the heading of "ugly." He mentioned nothing else. So the rational, logical flow of the post was that the Buffalo Bills had the worst turnover margin in 2010 and the reason was Fitzpatrick. I have no problem with anyone expressing their opinion. But as I told all of my children as they were growing up: You have the right to believe whatever you want. However, if you are going to express your opinion, be able to articulate a legitimate foundation for why you believe what you believe. Since it is logical to conclude from the OP's post that he blamed Fitzpatrick for the Buffalo Bills' bad turnover margin in 2010 - then we should be able to counter that argument with Fitzpatrick's statistics from 2010. As such, his career statistics are irrelevant. The fact is that Fitzpatrick passed for 3000 yards, threw 23 touchdowns, threw 15 interceptions, had a TD/Int ratio of 1.53, and fumbled 8 times. Those numbers are average numbers for a QB in any season (and compare favorably to the career average numbers of many of the QBs mentioned in the article you cited). The fact that he did it after being thrown in as the starter behind an offensive line that kept him running for his life and constantly in 2nd or 3rd and long (and many other factors)certainly is relevant - nothing happens in a vacuum. And even more relevant to the argument by the OP is the fact that the defense was horrendous in forcing turnovers.

You will not find one post I have ever written where I championed Fitzpatrick in any way. However, he did a decent job on a bad team last year. His performance last year had far less to do with our turnover margin than many other factors - and his career stats have no relevance to the 2010 turnover margin at all.

Good lord man, who in your opinion has the single most effect on the give away/take away if not the QB. Fitz threw 15 INT's and fumbled the football 8 times(5 lost) in 13 games which I can guarantee you was the biggest contributing factor in the Bills league low net-17,

So twist it around all you want, or ignore the facts, but it is what it is...

  2. I didn't see this elsewhere. Touching article by Bucky Gleason about a very decent thing to do by Jack Del Rio when he visited Buffalo last week. Classy move, Mr. Del Rio.

Thanks Kelly, great article and HC, Del Rio is a class act, and my prayers go out to Wilson and his family, get well soon and God Bless...

  3. Average QB turnovers, and below average defensive takeaways = Bad rating in total turnover/takeaways.

    Revelation of the century.

Above average QB turnovers, and below average defensive takeaways, = the worse give away/take away in the NFL

    Revelation of the Millennium

  4. I've said this before but no one seems to find it interesting. Fitzpatrick was basically a rookie as a starting QB last year. He had been a spot starter but primarily a backup before last season. There is reason to think he has not yet hit his ceiling. It's the same thing with his pre-snap reads, which some posters on this Board complain about. There is reason to think he'll improve in all facets.

here's an argument I can appreciate

  5. This thread says more about you than it does about Fitzpatrick. Yes, he should do better on interceptions, but you've vastly undercut the credibility of your opinions by the one-sided nature of your postings here. You are not making a rational argument; you have an axe and you are grinding it.

You guys trying to turn the thread into something personal are the ones with an axe to grind so lay off how about it, I was born in Buffalo and love my Buffalo Bills so don't try to insinuate my hearts not in the right place

  6. We're not ignoring it, just disputing your insinuation that Fitzpatrick's our problem. Our problem was our defense and a non effective running game. The Bills had 6 rushing TDs the entire 2010 season. That's pitiful. They were one of the worst at getting turnovers, which means shortened fields, which means less potentially intercepted passes for Fitzpatrick and a much greater chance for TDs.

The ugly? Please, he was no wear near being ugly last season. He was one of the few bright spots on the team dude.

Yes, he needs to take care of the ball, but not at the expense of not taking chances of going into a turtle shell a la Trent Edwards. The last thing I want right now is Fitzpatrick worrying about throwing interceptions. Stop with this nonsense.

Nonsense? Net-17, worse in the league, its a fact, What, are you on the no nonsense comity or something...

  7. You did neither dude. Your whole post ignores the defensive responsibility for takeaways which is half the stat.

Not to mention that Fitzpatrick is around the average in turnovers among starting QBs in the NFL since the beginning of time.

You should apologize for such a foolish and misleading thread.

 Maybe If you read the thread you would see my acknowledgment of the defense/secondary taking part in the net-17

TD to INT ratio is an important part of the equation that some of you choose to ignore...

  8. So considering how many Bills bashing posts you've made in a relatively short time frame, would it make sense for you to perhaps start cheering for another team like the Pats?

By posting the obvious, and starting a relevant discussion on turnovers, seriously?

I'm not going to sugar coat things so you can feel better,

  9. Fig, a direct correlation between TO/TA's and winning would mean that the patriots won the championship last year. They did have the best ratio...

You did happen to notice all the top teams in give away take away department were playoff/ Championship caliber I would assume, or how about the Bills being worse in the NFL and drafting 3rd overall,

  10. Ryan Fitz is not responsible for his crap line, when he took over for Edwards all of sudden the oline got much better. I believe Fitz became an adequate starter last year in the NFL. Given the fact that he hover's around the 16th best QB in the NFL that would mean he's not elite, or poor. He should have a good shot at getting another 20 tds and 15 ints. All quarterbacks fumble, Tom Brady has been sacked 244 times fumbled 72 and lost 32. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been sacked 92 times fumbled 25 times and lost 13. If Fitz can mitigate the sacks, his fumbles should come down, and if does that he'll probably throw fewer picks.

You want to talk about elite, Tom Brady passed for 3,900 yards, 36 TD's and 4 INT's (2010)

  11. Your analysis is backwards. BTW, that's not ugly, they're average numbers for a starting QB who has a set of balls.

Drew Brees has thrown 132 INTs in 137 games started and has had 66 fumbles in that span. The all time great and accurate Peyton Manning has had 198 INTs in 208 starts. Jim Kelly had 175 INTs in 160 games starts.

You must have been a big fan of Jauron if Fitzpatrick's INTs and Fumbles are what you're worried about. What plagued the Bills turnover numbers last year was the defense's inability to get INTs and Fumbles, it was not Fitzpatrick. If you want a guy who won't turn the ball over then go watch Trent Edwards. No guts no glory...and that's keeping it real.

    WORD!

In 138 Game starts Drew Brees scored 235 TD's

In 160 Game starts jim Kelly scored 237 TD's

    WORD!

The difference in the other QB's you quoted are the TD"s to INT's ratio and games won which means not turning the football over at crucial times of a football game.

I just showed you a direct correlation between winning football games/Championships and winning the give away take away battle. Fitz gives you the turnovers without the TD's needed to over come them.

Note: Fitz has zero control over how poorly our defense/secondary played last season so they also deserve some credit for the net -17

I've been waiting for a thread about turnovers/take aways to bring this important aspect to life. We were terrible at TO's/TA's last year and there is a direct correlation between these stats and wins/loses. Would we have won 6 games 2 seasons ago without Byrd's INT's. No.

Would we have won a couple close games we lost last year with 1 more take away? Yes. This aspect is the single biggest area a team can dramatically improve on from one season to the next. Da Bear's made it to the Super Bowl one season based on this and a helluva return game.

Preach turnovers. Practice turnovers. They're difference makers in every game.

We'll be better against the run this year. Impossible to be worse. Our LB's & DB's will, therefore, be tested more than last year. Therein creates the opportunities.

  13. The Good The top 4 teams in the AFC/ top 4 teams in the NFC/ give away/ take away (2010)

    AFC

    Patriots +28

    Steelers +17

    Chiefs +9

    Jets +9

    NFC

    Falcons +14

    Packers +10 Champions

    Eagles +9

    Buc's +9

The Bad On the other end of the spectrum/ Buffalo Bills /worse team in the NFL/ net - 17

The Ugly Fitzpatrick in a career 41 games played has thrown 42 INT's and fumbled the football 25 times. In 13 games during the 2010 season Fitzpatrick threw 15 INT's and had 8 fumbles.

  14. Bills game is playing this morning on NFL Network (game started at 7am)

I have to say that as I watch Fred Jackson slithering through the cracks, he looks just like Thurman Thomas used to look with his running. I'm happy for CJ Spiller to keep developing and growing, but Jackson is just a really smooth player who deserves to play!

hehe, They are both very slithery,

Fred Jackson reminds me of smooth flowing water running downhill, decisive, always taking the path of least resistance. Thurman Thomas reminded me of a stealth bomber carrying a deadly payload, Thurmal Warfare I used to call him.

Identical thought waves homer, amazing (at almost the same time)

  15. I see him as a young Jerry Rice..

    (sorry, Fig N--couldn't resist!)

hehe, No, more of a Anquan Boldin or Eric Moulds type receiver I think WEO,a young Eric Moulds is a good comparison

  16. I liked Easley last year when we drafted him. I was bummed that he got hurt. I think he's going to be a solid receiver and like the fact that he seems to be very humble.....

I agree Amstel, Easley seems to be a very humble individual, the type of guy you just love to root for and I hope he continues to improve,

Skys the limits for this guy...

  17. Levitre might actually be our starting LT if it werent his short arms......but he moves extremeley well

That's my thought John, Levitre is more of a finesse Lineman and his good footwork is better utilized at the tackle position despite having short arms.

  18. From Chris Brown:

"Last week Andy Levitre rotated with Chad Rinehart at left guard. Then he played center for a short spell in Saturday’s game. Now he’s lining up at another position.

Levitre is taking his primary snaps as the starting left guard, but he’s also taking snaps at left tackle with the second unit in place of Ed Wang.

We’ll have more on this after practice."

Andy Levitre is better suited for LT in my opinion

  19. Fitz didn't have a chance in the pocket last night. Guys were running free, Bell was a turnstile once again, Pears was terrible and Wood was getting destroyed by a guy who was cut 2 weeks ago. Stop it!

Fitz is a weenie, so Stop it!

I've just got one thing to say to you John, Terrelle Pryor/The Poor mans Cam

  20. I'm just not sold on all this Chan Gailey talk that he's a good coach. To me, he still hasn't proven he's an upgrade from Perry Fewell. All the people who think he improved Fitzpatrick really need to watch the games Fitzpatrick played in 2009 and then reevaluate if Fitzpatrick is any better under Gailey than he was under Fewell. The stats may look a little better, but visually, he's the same guy. I'll tell you one thing-Fewell would have never gone into 2010 with Edwards ahead of Fitzpatrick on the depth chart.

Any coach who takes over a team and goes negative 2 games with them has to be considered a question mark until he gets them better than when he got here. He didn't last year & I doubt he'll get over 6 wins this year either.

If you haven't noticed any improvement in the Bills Offense since Gailey took over then I'm wasting my time trying to convince you otherwise.

I'm not concerned with his doing more with less. I want him to do even more with more (OT). Why should he have to peddle uphill all the time?

I agree ball of Beer, Lets give Chan Gailey some real talent to work with and see what he does with it

  21. WR is one of the few positions the Buffalo Bills have sufficient talent/depth and it takes far to long for inexperienced WR's to get up to speed in the NFL.

Veteran WR Lee Evans is a prime example of how you want your players to conduct themselves on and off the football field.

  22. I'd rather have a Chan Gailey type versus a coach who can *only* be competitive with a stocked roster like Mike Shanahan.

It says something about a mans sense of loyalty and character in my opinion. Chan Gailey is going to coach all of his players to the best of his ability, find out what they each have to offer, and expand upon it. Gailey has the mind set, lets worry more about the guys we have and what we can do,

and worry less about what we don't have and can't do...
