I certainly think the Bills could have used him, but IMO we are not contending for a playoff spot this year..I would have preferred to keep him, but I am ok with trying to build for the future...For those hoping Namaan was going to make the roster, it is certainly looking good for him now. I think some have been overly hard on Evans, he really hasn't had a good NFL QB throwing to him not to mention bad coaching. He is going to a talented Baltimore team, don't be surprised if he has a big year as their deep guy. Flacco has an arm, and a decent O-line.

This is true They had wedges back then though.

I knew someone was going to open a thread on this...It was hard NOT to notice the new kick off location in every game so far. Many kicks were going right out of the endzone, resulting in most kicks ending in touch backs. Most of the kicks that WERE returned ended up not making it back to the 20 yard line. Surprisingly there were still a few big returns though. To me this minimizes the importance of some special teams guys. For instance Mcintyre, he is our full back (used rarely)his main role was ST. I might prefer the younger more explosive Caulcrick make the team...

Ryan Mallett ......QB Rating 108.2

Isn't that an early sign of alzheimers? -
I don't believe Lee has necessarily lost a step...But If I had to pick someone else to start opposite SJ, it would definitely be Nelson. The guy is big, with great hands. He isn't a burner, but runs great routes and is athletic. Donald Jones looked good, but I thought his play was pretty inconsistent when he was in there last year and his hands are questionable. Just a few weeks ago people were wondering if he was going to make the team, now he's starter quality? I like Jones as depth for now, if he impresses, then maybe. Easley is intriguing, but no one has really seen him play in practice or preseason...WAY too premature to consider him a starter. Unlike some, I think Davis will make the team barring injury. Nix loves this guy, and I think he wants to justify SD spending a 1st on him when he was there. He is a possibility also, but I'd rather just keep Evans...

I just watched that game, actually I didn't think he looked very good at all. Almost all of his completions, including his 1 TD, were short dump offs or slants. He looked pretty bad throwing the ball deep, missing open guys by a good amount and threw a pick. I think he completed 1 pass that he thew for over 15 yards in the air. He never saw anything even close to pressure, and was able to hold the ball forever. I get the impression that he will be a sack magnet if he ever starts. Not to mention his playing time was against all 3rd, and 4th strings...Mostly guys that may not even make the team. Gabbert didn't look very good either. Hoyer looked far better than both of them. And the pats rookie RB Ridley looked pretty good too. This game was relatively painful to watch in general due to the lack of most starting players even appearing in the game. Luckily on demand allows you to watch the whole thing in about 30 minutes. -
This ^. I wouldn't say the comment was dumb, since technically it wasn't called the wildcat when Kordell ran it. But the wildcat is basically just another name for an option offense (QB has the "option" to run or throw or toss), just like the pistol, or any other "nickname". They all may have their own tweaks and tendencies, but it is basically an option offense. Gailey was one of the earliest to try it in the NFL. I have no doubt that Gailey picked up Smith mainly for this purpose...KR, WR, are just secondary depth positions he can play.

This ^. Wilfork DESTROYED Hangartner every time he has played him. The Bills DID upgrade this position though, Wood (who is much stronger) is now the starting center. Hangartner is a backup.

Glad we were 4-12 instead of 5-11 last year.

I'm glad you said that, because I thought the exact same thing...While I always root for my Bills no matter how bad they are, I didn't necessarily want them to win meaningless games when losing could help improve their future. IMO Dareus was the best overall player in the draft, and things couldn't have played out better for the Bills (in the draft). To top it off it filled one of our biggest needs. Some will say win no matter what, yeah yeah...If our season is going to be that bad, my thinking is we might as well get our pick of top talent from it...I think we did Had we won that game, the board might be full of people crying about Prince Amukamara... -

Aaron Maybin also looked pretty good against the 3rd and 4th stringers last year (3 sacks)...We all saw how that translated into an automatic superstar.... -
I am commenting more on his history than this off season. This is his 7th year. He could not secure a spot on the Jags as a backup last year. He couldn't win a starting spot from the amazing Cornell Green two years ago. They let him go after 1 year. Despite getting plenty of playing time due to injury with Denver in 2006/7, he could not even get a regular active roster spot the next year (this was BEFORE his appendectomy). They let him go. He just seems to have a history of not being able to compete for a starting position, but he obviously did not impress his previous teams either...No team has tried to retain him. In the past 3 years he has a combined 5 starts. I just don't believe that he is all of the sudden going to become a quality starter. I could be wrong, and hope I am. I would just feel better if we picked up a vet to compete, or for depth at least.
-
Yeah, my hope is that he would throw only when guys are wide open or generally mismatched. They have given him some reps as a pure QB, I think soley to get him some throwing practice. I don't think they seriously consider him a backup QB.
-
Exactly. I was less than thrilled when the Bills kept trying to run it last year, mainly because they really didn't have the personnel for it. With smith (a former QB), and a guy that has already proven he can run the wild cat very effectively, I believe the Bills can use it as a successful weapon. Smith torched us last year, just with his feet. Obviously coaching, and guys like Spiller will have contribute their parts, but on a team with O-line questions...This could help. I also think the Bills will use Smith plenty at WR, meaning it could be hard for teams to change packages to counter that formation.

Aaron Maybin only weighs 228lbs

I know this is old news... I usually consider the writers for "shutdown corner" to be generally clueless...But the headline does make me laugh... http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/NFL-s-worst-player-Aaron-Maybin-releases-awf?urn=nfl-284572 -

Funny you say that. As a matter of fact Maybin had exactly 3 sacks last preseason...And looked pretty good. Of course this was against 3rd and 4th stringers....\ I remember thinking that he was going to really make an impact after watching him play during the preseason last year... We all saw how that translated into success... -

Agreed, Coleman is sized nicely...Not only that but I thought he looked pretty good during his brief playing time. I thought he looked better than Moats, who was also playing well at the time. -
In my case I had been lurking since the late 90's...The ability to visit this site while working on occasion finally sparked an interest to participate... I'd say I visit TBD 20 times more than all other Bills sites combined.

Yeah, I just started posting this year, but have been reading this board for about as long as it's existed...And I still know who the players are...Thanks though.

I like Jaws and Gruden also, those guys actually have a clue about the game and can articulate their thoughts. -

I am going a bit out of scope here, but has anyone else listened to Roy Jones try to announce HBO boxing? Sounds like a sexually confused 12 year old boy. -

haahh, I remember that... Classic. -
Yeah, there's the risk he might not play...But your professional medical opinion aside, a partially healthy Gaither is better than full healthy and awful Pears or Wang... You give a guy like that a small 1 year contract, what's the worst that happens...we cut the Amazing Mansfield Wrotto or Wang? The best that happens is we actually have a capable OT. Again this is true, but why not TRY to upgrade...Low risk, high reward.
-
We just signed Barnett... Interesting that all of our starting LB's and the top backup were free agents...With the exception of Kelsey who was drafted and played as a DE.
-
I dont remember there being a strong interest in Albert, but it sure would have been nice if the Bills took a chance on Gaither. Even at 70%, he would be an upgrade over Pears and the rest of the OT rejects we have...Heck, can we have Albert now? He would be better too...
