  1. I'm beginning to think we should totally change our style of offense from this pistol crap to a ball control type system, a la Joe Ferguson, Joe Cribbs, Roosevelt Leaks, Jerry Butler, Frank Lewis, and Mark Brammer. What do you all think?

  2. Too late to Suck for Luck.. Can we Guarantee that RG3 will be our next QB?

No, not with Nix running the draft.

Everyone else seems to be making a late season charge. I'm hoping we end up 6th. With St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Minnesota in front of us that would ensure that we could land either Barkley or RG3, depending on who Jacksonville and Indianapolis take. Heck, we may even have our pick between RG3 and Matt Barkley.

    Any preference?

  3. Please draft a QB if possible and develop him. We need to draft one and just start putting pieces in place around him. This team is 3 MORE years off so the original '3 Year plan' is just not going to happen. Lets do what the good teams do and draft a guy and bring him along while putting pieces around him please.

And can we dump this worthless attempt at the 3-4? When Williams comes back put him and Dareus side by side in the middle, keep edwards as a DE, find another DE in FA and lets go back to a 4-3. Put some draft picks in the OL, LB and WR And lets start doing this right.

    No. Let Edwards go.

  4. If that is true then pull the plug on edwards right now . Give wannstadt two weeks to play around with the mess

Assuming, of course, he wants to.

as was discussed in the game thread...the radio feed and schefter said that wanny was calling 4-3 schemes and edwards was calling the rest of the schemes...

Was either one more effective than the other? I couldn't tell since I listened to the game on the radio.

  5. Why is it that most of the time our D spots the opponent 14-21 points before stopping them and then fades at the end?

    1. Lack of talent

    2. Lack of depth

    3. Offense can't hang on to the ball.

    1. Who have we drafted that we want to keep) that would not fit into a 4-3 rather than a 3-4? I thinkDareus as a 4-3 DT would be much more effective that he is today. Same with Williams, who would be better as a 4-3 DT than as a NT in a 3-4. Out LB's would be the same in either -- they aren't good in a 3-4, can't be any worse in a 4-3.

    2. The offense is not the problem with our defense -- DOH! If our defense cold stop someone and get off the field, they would be on the sidelines more.

Then why do I hear announcers say that Team A needs to hold on to the ball to keep Team B's offense off the field?

  6. I agree to a point. But they are playing a 4-3 now for the most part. Kyle Williams has no place to excel in a 3-4. He is too small for NT and too slow for DE. Troup might be the answer at NT but would rather see him in a rotation at DT. Williams now has zero trade value so he can't be used to upgrade DE or OLB in either scheme. The only problem is Sheppard may have no place except special teams in a 4-3 scheme. Just don't see him being a 4-3 MLB.

I think Kyle can be a 3-4 NT, if given the right scheme and not always locked into the 0 technique, such as the 3-4 over.

The defense would be on the sidelines longer if they could ever stop someone.

No question about that, but we've all seem games this year where the defense played well in the first half, but faded late becuase the offense couldn't stay on the field. This is why I wish we would revert to a ball control offense.

  7. 320 Lb DE can't play LB and 245 Lb can't play DE so coaching is the problem. If we actually lined up in a 34 and used the 34 players we drafted in the right positions we would be playing a lot better.

The only reason we've got players in positions where they don't belong is injuries.

Now try this on for size: Last year, the Texans' D was terrible (30th in yards allowed, 29th in points allowed). This year's, it's elite (1st in yards, 4th in points). Near as I can tell, they added 3 starters in the offseason: Jonathan Joseph (a very good and pretty high-priced free agent CB), JJ Watt (a rookie 1st-round pick DE), and Danieal Manning (a excellent KR, but mediocre FS). They also lost starting DT Amboi Okoye, and got only 5 games out of their best player (Mario Williams) this year, compared to 13 last year. They also switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4, which according to any Bills' front office employee, is a major obstacle for a defense to overcome.

So how did they go from being a bottom 3 defense to a top 3 defense? Yes, they did add some talent, but does that really explain anywhere near that big of a jump? There's probably some luck/variance involved too. Absolutely. But that still doesn't get us anywhere near the top 5, does it? Put another way: If you looked at the Texans' 2010 defense, would you have said it was loaded with talent? I'm guessing no, but feel free to correct me on this. Are Jonathan Joseph and JJ Watt really so good that they transformed that unit from the dregs to the heights? I say no. Coaching matters, and furthermore, not every player is a good fit for every coach's scheme. I submit that the better strategy is to get the right coaches/schemes in place, then find good players to fit those schemes, rather than trying to assemble a loaded defense, and only firing the coach once it's clear that he can't win even with elite talent.

When Nix and Gailey came on board, they arrived with the intention of implementing a 3-4 defense, and that's the way we are headed, even with all the 4-3 players we still have on the roster. And I would submit to you that even last year, Houston's defense was better than ours. So what do we do? Do we stay on course and get more 3-4 players, or revert to a 4-3 and set ourselves back even further?

  8. I'm not on board with this for two reasons.

1: Buddy nix is set on drafting for a 3-4, and that is what we've drafted for in the last two drafts. To bring in a new 4-3 DC would set us back even further than we are now.

2: Part of the problem is our offensive system. I think it would help if we went more ball control to keep our defense on the sidelines longer.

  9. I agree more talent on the D is needed, but we have some good players. Oh look, turns out Maybin wasn't that bad after all. POOR COACHING. Look around the NFL and you'll see great defensive players that used to be Bills. We are a DE and OLB away from having a very good D player wise.

I'll agree that we need another DE, but we need more than one OLB and at least one more decent CB.

As far as Maybin goes, I wonder how motivated he was (or wasn't) in Buffalo. He's in his third(?) year and he's still not playing every down. That's not what I expect from a first-round pick. Also, he wasn't selected by this current regime.

I'm sure there was one...maybe even two guys on the Texans message board that said the same thing last year... B-)

Alright, try this on for size. Houston's best defender is on IR (Mario Williams). Buffalo's best defender is on IR (Kyle Williams). Take those two out of the equation, and which team has more talent on defense? I would say Houston. So, of course, Wade Phillips is going to look better. I think thay Edwards needs more talent, as would any other DC.

  10. I'd love to see Nolan as our D-Coordinator. I would be very surprised if Edwards is back, although stranger things have happened. Although we are not the most talented team around, our defense has under-performed all year. That can onlt be attributed to coaching. Coaching involves putting the right player in a position where they can win their battle. In many cases we don't have the right player in the right position so winning the battle is not an option.

The first part of the equation is getting the right player. That is not the DC's job. Let's get the right players first.

  11. I realize that there have been about 1457 mock drafts posted, so I'll make it 1458. I purposely waited until the big board I use, Draft Tek, posted their last update. So, here goes:

1 3 Marcell Dareus Alabama 6'3" 319 DT43 DE34 Athletic big man can contribute in a variety of positions

2 34 Mason Foster Washington 6'1" 245 OLB43 SILB Can play OLB in our 4-3 look while learning 3-4 SILB behind Davis

3 68 Colin Kaepernick Nevada 6'5" 233 QB Developmental QB who should assimilate our offense quickly

    4 100 Jerrell Powe Mississippi 6'2" 335 DT34 DT43 Monster who can play 0 technique

    4 122 Darren Evans Virginia Tech 6'0" 227 RBF Needed 3rd-string RB

5 133 Jalil Brown Colorado 6'1" 204 CB Need to build CB depth

6 169 Joseph Barksdale LSU 6'5" 325 ROT LOT Depth T who can play both sides

    7 206 Jonathan Cornell Mississippi 6'1" 235 WILB Poz's backup

7 245 Andre Smith Virginia Tech 6'5" 270 TE Big blocking TE

Please feel free to flame away.

  12. In a 3-4 defense the pressure comes from the OLBers. What pressure did our 3-4 backers generate last year? And I am not sold on Merriman. We are not getting the Merriman of 5 years ago, and achilles injuries are very tough to overcome. Von Miller is adept at both stopping the run and rushing the passer. And I bet if we drafted Von Miller he would start from week one

Even if he's a 1st-rounder (and I think he is), he'll need some developmental time before he starts, and our defense doesn't have time for that. It needs help, now.

London Fletcher was an undrafted FA don't now what his weight was coming out of college but he is now 5' 10" at 245 lbs what has he done with his career ??

This kid is 6'3" & 237 . I would think with that frame he could put on say 10 to 15 lbs which would put him at say 255 lbs range . With the added height - 5" taller than what Fletcher is - to reask you the question "what might he be able to do for our defense" ???

But will that 10-15 lbs hurt his athleticism? If not, fine. If so, avoid him like the plague.

  13. Trade for San Francisco's 7th, get 2nd rounder.

I'm not buying the word from 1 Bills Drive about sticking with our LB's.

    1 7 Ryan Kerrigan OLB34 Purdue

2 34 Martez Wilson ILB Illinois

    2 45 D.J. Williams TE Arkansas

3 68 Christian Ponder QB Florida State

4 99 Casey Matthews WILB Oregon

    4 121 Cedric Thornton DE34 Southern Arkansas

5 130 Lee Ziemba OT Auburn

    6 164 Mike Blanc DE34 Auburn

7 195 Delone Carter RBF Syracuse

No secondary help, which we desparately need?

I'm not sold on Merriman yet, either, but Nix wants to get bigger LBs, and I don't see how Miller qualifies.
