  1. I disagree. Maybe Wade Phillips would not have made this a top defense with all the injuries but the point you are missing is that Phillips is a top DC in this league and has been for years. George Edwards is a nobody--a glorified position coach. You simply cannot make these two guys equivalent and then say, essentially, that NO DC could do anything with this roster. That's not a logical conclusion.

It is much easier for me to believe that a veteran, intelligent defensive coordinator could have gotten better performance out of these guys than Edwards has. Chan picked Edwards becuase he wouldn't challenge Gailey's command and Nix is too simple to have asked why on Earth he was picking a guy like Edwards to totally revamp the defense with an entirely different scheme.

Maybe so, but Phillips has had more talent than what is on this roster.

  2. So I am sitting here watching kc vs gb. I noticed Orton lookin pretty solid. His passing numbers at Denver were solid. I think I have overdosed on fitzmagic because it doesn't seem to work anymore. Denver's d was terrible last year and I think Orton would be a huge upgrade over the Amish interception pop gun.

I think it would take too big a contract.

  3. any chance the bills may try and use him in the last two games ?

he seemed to catch everything in the preseason

whats the harm in letting play ?

IIRC, Gailey said he was going to use the last games to evaluate players. You just might get your wish.

  4. This defense has not given this team a chance to win all year. When opponents are constantly driving it down the field on you, and putting up 25-30 points a game, unless you have Brady, Rodgers or Brees at QB, you're not winning many football games. Now, I think injuries have take a tole to a certain extent, especially with Kyle not being healthy at any point this year. I also like some young guys we have on D ( Aaron, Marcel, Kelvin ), but there are just too many liabilities right now.

We saw this offense firing on all cylinders earlier on when the D WAS CREATING TURNOVERS. Now, teams are driving it down the field on us, and we're not picking the ball of 4 times a game.

I think that our poor D is really affecting our offense. It just seems like anytime we cant take put together a good drive on offense, the other team just takes it down for a score when the our D hits the field. I really believe this is putting a lot of pressure on our offense, knowing they'll probably have to score at least 24+ to win the game. Like I said, there are only 3 quarterbacks right now that can constantly put up 30 a game, regardless of how the defense is playing.

So before we jump to conclusions on Fitz, and our offense, we should build a respectable defense that gives us a chance to win. GO BILLS!

The offense is not out of the doghouse on this. If they weere able to hang on to ball and score points, it would keep the defense on the sidelines. Both sides of the ball need help.

  5. When were winning it was around 30 points

I think 30 is a bit high, but until we get a decent defense we may have to.

Yeah great plan. So teams can load up 9-11 guys into the box and the offense will move nowhere. I'm not saying the spread isn't without problems, but at least the Bills scored some points this season. Something we haven't seen a lot of in a long time.

Ball control does not mean running the ball exclusively. Ferguson had 5 good receivers to throw to (Butler, Lewis, Brammer, Leaks, Cribbs), and that's just the starters (Roland Hooks, anybody?). We did throw the ball then, and we could do it now.

  6. The defense was terrible before all the players went on IR, and that includes last season. Edwards thinks the word "pressure" means artificial respiration, because the Bills' defense needs it.

My mother, who is quite the baker, told me that the quality of the finished product is directly proportional to the quality of the ingredients. Have we given Edwards quality ingredients? Let's take OLB, which appears to be seen by most as the biggest problem on defense. We have Chris Kelsay, barely adequate as a 4-3 DE, Shawne Merriman, on IR (again), and two former late-round picks that have been replaced by defensive lineman. So, if you have nobody who can play the position decently, how is that his fault?

  7. With the defense we currently have in place? Or with an improved defense?

If we actually had a strong defense? 17 - 21 points

OK. My guess was 21-24, which I think we could consistently score if we went back to the ball control offense and continued to build our defense.

  8. I know a lot of people are down on the Bills (including me), and people have been questioning Fitz's play since his contract extension. Granted, the team has sucked since the Toronto game. I don't know if Fitz has been playing hurt since getting nailed by London Fletcher. IMO, Fitz is a good QB and needs more weapons around him. Fred Jackson is 50% of the offense. The other legitmate weapons Fitz has are Stevie Johnson & Scott Chandler. If you compare the stats of Jim Kelly's 3 best years with Buffalo, with Fitz stats of this year, Fitz is not that far off. It's possible Fitz could beat Kelly's highest yards in a season. Right now, Fitz is at 3,329, with 2 games to go. Kelly had 3,844 in 1991, with a much better Bills offense.

IMO, I think in order for the Bills offense to be successful, they need to draft a good #2 WR (assuming they resign Johnson) and another TE to compliment Chandler. If the Bills could get a good TE combo, like NE has with Hernandez & Gronkowski, along with 2 good WR's & Jackson & Spiller in the backfield, then the Bills will have a successful offense. I think Fitz is a good journeyman QB and should be the starter for the next 2-3 years, while Boss Hogg & Cooter fill the holes on the team, and create depth.

He's bad only when he tries to carry the whole offense.

  9. In order to play ball control type offense you have to have a good defense.....because you are not going to score a lot of points.

OK, I'm up for this discussion. About how many points would you say is a reasonable average per game that would give us a chance to win?

  10. For years I have been listening to everyone say we should have picked Ngata over Whitner. Well you know what, this year is pretty much proving otherwise. Baltimore's defense is looking old and tired while SF's is flourishing right after they added Whitner. Linemen like Ngata wear down quickly plus they aren't as important in today's NFL. Stud DBs like Whitner make a difference on every part of the field.

    Think of it like this:

Football players are like chess pieces. The pawns are up front, they are typically the first ones to move, but they are not able to do a lot of things. This is just like a lineman. DBs are like bishops and rooks and stuff. You never see them coming and you don't know what hit you.

Can we finally put the Whitner/Ngata whining to rest?

This would be a logical argument if Whitner was still a Bill and playing to the level he is in SF. Good teams are built from the inside out, front to back.
