  1. I have to think that due to the lack of talent at LB and DE the Bills are better fit for a 4-3. I would think with 2 Pro-Bowl type DT's they need to make that switch back and load up on DE's and LB's in the draft.

Also, I believe a 4-3 does not put as much pressure on your corners.

Either way, we will need to pick LBs. Also, if we had good enough corners, the 3-4 would not be an issue. Mario Clark and Charles Romes did OK.

  2. My question to you is WHY? Why keep Merriman? So that he can take up camp space and hinder development of a player with potential?

If Merriman's name was "Joe Smith" people would be screaming to cut him. I hate to say this, HE WILL GET HURT AGAIN. This is the NFL. This is the most violent sport in the world. He has been hurt the past 3 years and unfortunately his injuries are VERY serious. His body will never be the same as it once was which leaves him vulnerable for future injuries. There is a reason why he resigned with Buffalo...Buffalo was the only team offering him that type of contract. I was fine with it to give it a shot. Thought there was great upside...but when a player lasts for 6 weeks (most being preseason) before going on the IR AGAIN there is a trend.

What is funny is that Buffalo fans want Buffalo to get better...yet we are never willing to give up on players. I am not saying that they dont have talent, but when you cannot depend on those players what good are they?

IIRC, much of Merriman's contract is guaranteed. We should bring him back and see if he can play, and if he can't, then let him walk.

  3. And that is how you maintain the consistent 7-9, 8-8 records that Donahoe/Levy gave us over the last decade.

A true rebuild comes with taking your lumps in the beginning.

They CLEANED HOUSE in both the Front Office and Roster. They did not take a 7-9 team and make them 4-12. They took an EMPTY team and started over. New FO, new Coaching, new players, new philosophy, etc. Let the kids like Dareus and Stevie make this THEIR team.

We have 6 rookies getting serious play time this year. That is how you develop them. Sitting behind highly-paid FAs doesnt do anything except get you to another 7-9 record.

Tell me, when the season is over, what is the difference between 5-11 and 8-8? If you aren't making the playoffs, who cares about 1 or 2 more losses?

I think you misunderstand. I never said to sit the rookies. The guys we have playing next to them are my issue.

  4. Everyone knows that the NFL has turned into a pass happy, high scoring league. With that being said, it would make sense that most teams are building defenses to stop this type of offense, right? That is, defenses built on speed and pass rushing. As a smaller market team with potential weather issues at the end of the season, would it make sense to build our team differently? What if we tried to model a team off of the early 2000s Bucs and Ravens? Try to build the nastiest defense in the league and then have a ball control running offense. Low turnovers, low mistakes, clock control, field position. If other teams in the league are trying to stop high scoring passing offenses they should be vulnerable to this type of offensive philosophy. Fitz would certainly be a serviceable QB here. We would really only need to beef up the O-Line some and we could really use a lot of our current team (offense) to do it. Go all D in the draft for the next couple years and maybe a couple/few FA acquisitions. Wouldn't this be our best shot at really competing (at least until we find that top 5 in the league franchise QB type)?

If we were really able to build that kind of offense and defense, we would not need that top 5 in the league franchise QB. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl.

  5. HAhAHAHahaHhaHahAHhHhahaHAhhahhAH! For a guy who will be 31 by the 2012 season. Man they need to share some of what they are on. No disrespect to Freddie but that is just crazy. If he was 5 years younger that would be a possibility. If he was 5 years younger we would have already resigned him ourselves.

We traded Lynch for a 4th and a 6th, so I could see maybe a 4th for Jackson.

  6. It'll be interesting to see who will be starting on Week 1 next season. You have to believe Williams will be out there full-time, but what will they do about McGee? McKelvin? I really don't think Florence has played that poorly --- he got beat on a perfectly thrown ball yesterday. Plus, I believe he's in the first year of a three-year deal that they view as a bargain.

i think McGee is gone next year, because he has a big contract and cannot stay healthy. As for McKelvin, does he get as many chances as Donte Whitner?

  7. I gave him a "D." I'm all for building through the draft, and his draft picks are startring to look and play better. However, I wish he would do more through free agency. At any rate, we've gone from 4-12 to what looks like 5-11. Not a whole lot of improvement to crow about.

  8. Just for the record CJ is the same height and 6lbs heavier than Chris Johnson.

They are both pretty good in my opinion. Now that Jackson is on IR Gailey has been FORCED to use CJ and he is getting better every week. He has been putting up better and better numbers and he has done it without Eric Wood our best offensive lineman by far and also the leader and brains of that line.

When will Bills fans stop with this one sucks and the other is the best ever stuff. Freddie is damn good and CJ is proving to be damn good. How about we quit bitching about who is better and be glad we have them both and challenge the front office to use or good players to win games.

Doesn't he get spelled by Javon Ringer?

  9. Rogers proves a point I've been making for years which a lot of people disagree with that good corners can always been found with mid and late round picks

But are you prepared to see him play in anything other than sub packages?

  10. "[CJ]'s not the biggest back in the world, I don't think he can go out there and carry it 25-30 times." --Chan Gailey, 12/18/11.

I don't even know if I agree with him, but as of yesterday, Chan does not plan to use CJ as an every-down back. Based on his production, I'm absolutely mystified.

That may change, but if we keep Fred and Choice, why not spread the love?

  11. I really don't want to lose Jackson. He is VERY talented despite his age. Bad teams get better by keeping their good talent and upgrading their bad talent. I don't know how much you get in trade for what will be a 31 year old RB.

There are those on this board that believe we can get a 2nd-rounder for FJ.

  12. Spiller is the future and the future is now.

This team should fire Nix and Gailey, do whatever it takes to get into position to draft RG III (2012's 1st, 2nd + 2013 1st, 2nd), then trade Fred Jackson for a 2012 2nd which should be easy to do.

Make Whaley the GM and have him hire a new head coach. Perhaps Brian Billick?

This team needs a drastic change in direction. They have some really good pieces in place, but prolonging this kind of change will only set this team back another 2 or more years.

So you would would trade four prime draft choices for one player, when they could be used on defense?

  13. Switching to a 4-3 eliminates the need for 3-4 OLB's..............but would create the exact same need for two 4-3 DE's.

The Bills need outside pass rushers any way you break it down.

I mean.......basically Kelsay just plays the LDE position most of the game. He actually made a few plays today but he's old and breaking down and was never anything more than an average LDE at his best.

Edwards is a serviceable 3-4 DE and Carrington looks like he could become one. Neither makes any sense as a 4-3 end. I guess they then become reserve DT's?

Dareus and Williams wouild make a very nice 1-gap 4-3 DT combo.

    On paper at least.

The last time the Bills had two penetrating DT's in a 4-3 it was Pat Williams and Sam Adams. In order to be effective against the run one of them had to hold the point of attack to keep London Fletcher and co clean. Which kind of made it a waste of time having two penetrating DT's. Neither of them liked doing that work. Just something to consider.

I have siad in the past that I would be for a change to the 4-3, but now I'm not so sure. These players have had 2 years in the system, so why not just get players that are better fits for it?

That would depend on what DC signs here.

Which, in turn, depends on what DCs you can convince to interview.
