  1. Becauthe of hith playing hithtory, Dierdorf obthetheth about the offenthive line every opportunity he getth. He ith inthufferable. Remember hith pithing contethtth with Boomer Ethiathon on Monday night broadcathtth? He thuckth.

  2. I would say the back-to-back 2-14 seasons were lower than today. Hank Bullough as head coach made everyone in a 500 mile radius of him -- fans, players, media -- absolutely miserable.

The year was 1985. Bruce Mathison appeared in 10 games at QB, starting 7 of them, with a record was 1-6. He threw 4 TD passes, and 14 INTs. 8 fumbles / 6 lost. That's 4 TD passes to go with 20 turnovers. And let's not forget Vince Ferragamo: 1-8 as a starter. 5 TD, 17 INTs. These guys make Ryan Fitzpatrick look like Jim Kelly.

The defense had a young Bruce Smith & Darryl Talley, plus Charles Romes, Smerlas and Haslett, but not much else. Probably because the D was on the field most of the game, they were blown out numerous times.

The 1985 Bills were really, really, really bad.

  3. P.S Keith Ellison is a better lb than Chris Kelsay. He's quicker, and much better in coverage. Infact Keith Ellison is our best coverage lb. Which isn't saying a lot, but if the choice was to extend Ellison or Kelsay, the logical football choice would've been Ellison as it relates to coverage ability of our olb's in the 3-4. Also Andra Davis is a guy you keep. He has the most 3-4 experience of any of our lb's, and is the best run defender of the bunch. Different position playing inside than out, but he's a natural albeit aging 2 down run defender at ilb.

Circle gets the square. +1

  4. A new low point in video analysis and posting more like it - sorry.

    1) Checking my roster, yes - here it is - MAYBIN IS AN LB - NOT A DL!! And yes, Maybin still sux.

    2) No push? The other three rushers were more than 5 yards into the backfield. 3 defenders working against 4 OL.

    3) Stroud is not on the field - he's #99 for future reference. "LE" was our young 2nd string OLB Chris Ellis, and he lets himself get shoved to the inside, which is where they lose contain. It's also where he runs into Dwan Edwards' legs from behind and knocks him down - not the Patriots doing or any physical failure on Edwards' part - just a raw rookie getting out of position.

    4) Williams is knocked down eventually by two OL. Whatever.

Sure - it sounds cute - but actually looking at the video eliminates your point. There were only 2 D-linemen on the field on that play.

The DL is not a weakness of this team. The LB's, on the other hand, are a serious weakness.

You got me. I should retitle the post "A low point in Bills Pass Rush history". Forgive me. Now then -- 4 guys rushing the passer, never getting near the QB, and all end up on their cans, with OLinemen all upright. Still shamefully bad.

Also -- when they are on the field at full strength, the DLinemen consistently generate no pass rush whatsoever. That is a weakness.

  5. JP ran for his life at Tulane, right? I don't think he ever had a good line in front of him, ever. His raw physical gifts were enough to overcome that in college, but not in the pros. If memory serves, I think Trent didn't have much of an O line to work with either at Stanford. NOTE TO TALENT EVALUATORS: success despite a bad O-line in college is not an indicator of NFL success.

QBs look much better when they (a) have time to throw, and (b) have a feel for, and ability to sidestep oncoming pressure (like Aaron Rodgers in the Monday nighter against the Bears). IMO, you don't develop B without A... you can't develop pocket presence if you rarely have a pocket to be present in. JP and Trent's stints in Buffalo would likely have been longer if they had ever had time to throw. (I think RJ did have time, but was a knucklehead.) You get time to throw from (1) a good O-line and (2) playcalling that isn't predictable.

Not saying our guys were starter quality NFL QBs... not by a longshot. But, coaching and front office have a lot to do with a QB's success.

Is there an above average starter in the NFL with a weak offensive line?

  6. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2010092603/2010/REG3/bills@patriots#tab:watch

Roll to about the halfway point of the highlight package... just after Spiller's KR TD, you'll see Brady "scramble" for a drive-sustaining first down. Take a good look at the line on this play.

    1) Check Maybin rushing on the right end. Yikes.

    2) Now roll it back and watch again. As Brady starts to move to his right to run, notice the posture of the linemen. Except for the left tackle (who is dusting himself off after burying Maybin), all the Pats* O-Linemen are standing up. All of the Bills pash rushers are sprawled on the turf in a neat little pile.

I can't recall ever seeing an entire line get so dominated on one play. <Deep, pained sigh.>

  7.

As cursed as Buffalo may seem, I think the Cleveland Brown are more cursed. The owner moved the team to Baltimore (sorta) where they win a SB and become a perennial playoff team with an awesome defense. Can there ever be an owner more hated the Art Modell?

Perhaps the Browns (and really the entire city of Cleveland) has had it worse than Buffalo... but check this pseudo-scientific approach to fan pain, and see who's on top. (Note: it's from 2007.)

You could theoretically add the two recent MNF losses (to Cowboys and Pats*) as more minor soul-sucking moments as well.

  8. Anyone that lives in the DC area could have predicted this one.

A lot of fans on this board never saw him play, they only look at stats.

Campbell is a nice guy that happens to suck at QB...Sounds familiar.

I take my hat off to Nix and Gailey for not pulling the trigger in this one.

The problem is they haven't pulled the trigger on anything. So the fans are stuck with another year of evaluating players. Which seems to be a key piece to building a playoff team in the future but not for now.

Ya -- saw plenty of Campbell here. No one shed any tears in DC upon his departure.

  9. Maybe we can find a little solace in this list:

miami's Starting QBs since #13 of the quick release and loud whine:

    Jay Fiedler

    Damon Huard

    Ray Lucas

    Brian Griese

    AJ Feeley

    Sage Rosenfels

    Gus Frerotte

    Joey Harrington

    Daunte Culpepper

    Cleo Lemon

    Trent Green

    John Beck

    Chad Pennington

    Chad Henne

I dunno about you guys, but that makes me feel just a little bit better.

  10. I'm 33 and 100% positive that if I was standing in front of you, you wouldn't be speaking like that. But, you're a tough talker behind a computer screen. And i bet you're either A. unemployed or B. working in one of the 1000s of amazing careers Buffalo has to offer. So I'm pretty sure it's time to go handle the dinner rush at whatever chain restaurant you work at in the Galleria. I know, I know people from Buffalo think PF Chang's is classy, I get it.

So you live in Buffalo... and yet you wreck Buffalo, as well as the Bills fans who remain loyal to the team despite their lives taking them all over the country ... and you're a proud Bills fan? Or are you...

Do you happen to own a pair of teal-green & orange Zubaz pants?

  11. We can empty the seats at the Ralph, for one... but the revenue sharing setup cushions that blow too. As long as Ralph is financially up year to year, he'll keep it as-is.

I'm in the Northern VA area, and this place has done lots of hating on Redskins owner Dan Snyder over the last decade. Why? Because he wanted to win so badly (he's a lifelong passionate Skins fan), and was such a hands-on kind of guy, that he spent money like a sailor on leave, and pulled every lever he could to try to win. And he made lots and lots of mistakes, and wrecked a decade in DC (minus a few bright spots). He finally learned to focus his efforts on stuff he knows (making money, marketing, etc), and brought in football people to do football things. First he brought in his hero (Joe Gibbs) whom the game had passed by, then he brought in a GM and coach with proven track records of success, whose terms were clear: stay in the owner's box, Danny... just keep writing those checks.

I would trade that kind of ownership (complete with the frustrating, tumultuous decade) for the current flavor in Buffalo, in a western New York minute (whatever that is). The Skins ownership is passionate about the team. The Bills ownership is far from it.

Until chronic losing becomes an unacceptable problem at the top, said chronic losing will not stop.
