  1. Bad teams tease their fans by losing close games. In 1984 the 2-14 Bills lost 6 of those games by 4 points or less. That means, in spite of being a horrible team, that went 2-14 the next year, they were in or won half their games. The 1985 team lost 6 games by a TD or less. Once again a bad team was in or won half their games. The 4-12 1986 team was within a TD in 7 of their 12 losses, meaning they were in 11 of 16 games & still were big time losers.

I agree with your main point -- we could be looking at a 3- or 4-win season -- but I also thought this was interesting:

Over the last 20 years, almost half of all NFL games (46%) were decided by 7 or fewer points (which is one reason why football is king). It is common for teams to be "in" games until the final gun... "any given Sunday" and all that. This data might deflate some of the chatter on the relative value of "playing teams close." Unfortunately, playing teams close will tend to prolong the careers of subpar coaches.

  2. I hope Shanahan fails miserably in Washington. Every indication is that he will. When was the last time a coach really succeeded there? He used the Bills to set his starting price knowing Washington was interested. Of course they took the bait. Plus-He just looks like a total doosh to me...I dont like the cut of his jib...and Im Irish!

    (1) Excellent pic you got there

    (2) YES dude. Shanahan is the "offensive genius" who rode Elway's arm and Alex Gibbs' illegal cut-blocking method to a couple Super Bowls. Overpriced and overrated... I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot clown pole.

  3. Not to be an ass, but I don't think the Bills care whether you see potential in any of their players or not (which is what I was talking about - not your opinion on him, or mine either for that matter). Also, Maybin is way bigger than Coleman, which was the biggest knock on him and probably the reason he wasn't drafted at all.

I'm all for cutting him if there is someone else that he would be taking a roster spot from, but that isn't the case this year, especially after Batten going on IR. They are going to keep 5 OLBs - Kelsey, Ellis, Torbor, Maybin, and Coleman and none of those guys have any serious competition. Next year when they lose Kelsey and possibly Torbor, they'll draft one or two OLBs and still keep Maybin as at least the fifth because there 'll be a clear 5 players better than everyone else, which will include Maybin. I think you do mor eharm than good if you cut him too quickly - he should get some opportunity to show what he can do over a few seasons.

Right - he would have to be truly expendable, which he isn't yet. Worst case, he's a clear-passing-down pass rusher, and pray they don't run a draw play his way.

  4. Bad: Early signs on Maybin are not encouraging.

Good: Maybin is way too young to call a bust.

Bad: He may end up being a one-trick pony.

Good: Derrick Thomas was a one-trick pony (no counter move, pure speed rusher who bent the edge so well, his lack of a counter move didn't matter).

Bad: Maybin may only be a situational pass rusher.

Good: He could still easily attain double digit sacks which would be a significant contribution to any team.

Summary: Maybin's "starting blocks explosion" and long body will give opponents fits…especially during home games when crowd noise is a factor.

Good summary - too early to call him a bust, but the initial signs are not encouraging. There seems to be a knucklehead factor with him. Here's hoping he grows up quickly. I hope we see him dump backs behind the line of scrimmage on draw plays, as opposed to racing up field and out of the play altogether.

  5. This thread is too funny. Really. 1 preseason game and people are already annointing Clausen as the QB the Bills should have picked and the savior of the Carolina Panthers? Come on. I bet Levi Brown looks every bit as good as Clausen in tonight's game. (and frankly, I did not think he looked that good)

Thank you homeboy. Well said! We need the regular season before people go crazy. This is the anonymous internet version of training camp fights that pop up because people get tired of hitting their own teammates.

  6. oh really? using the blocking chutes (sp?) in camp isnt new......theyve been doing it. Lots of teams do squats in the gym.

If this team improves its because of X's and O's not because Chan doesnt let the guys watch sportscenter while lifting.

Greg Williams ran a tough camp too and it meant jack shhhhhhhhh

bottom line this team needs more talent not more old school stuff.

That is true. I just hope I never hear anyone call him a "players' coach".

  7. http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/index.php?...p;hl=doom+gloom

Back to the doom & gloom...

If by some chance, the Bills fail to finish at least 8-8, then I will eat some crow. But if they finish 8-8 or higher, then I intentionally plan on rubbing it in to all the doom and gloomers that think the Bills are going to suck this year.

I hope you're right and will accept it gladly. I suppose the one thing I didn't consider is the unpredictable handful of teams that totally stink up the joint, underperforming expectations. That's probably good for a couple more wins.

  8. Forgive my brief rant:

Peter King is a fatuous blowhard who is obsessed with himself. He fancies himself as a connoisseur of many things, including coffee and football. He really is terrible, given to making obvious statements and coloring them as insight, and making it look like he has really close personal relationships with most NFL players. Accuracy is of course an indispensable characteristic of a successful quarterback, as is "pocket-sense" - feeling & reacting to pressure, avoiding contact, etc.

    Now then...

Completion percentage can be a deceiving metric, stat-wise, especially in west coast offenses. I think downfield accuracy -- completions of 15-20 yards or more -- is a better measure than just straight completion percentage, when it comes to being considered an accurate QB.

  9. Crazy thing is -- we could go 5-11 and still have lots of improvement on both sides of the ball. Our schedule is harder than last year, especially our road schedule.

The rest of the division keeps improving, and we don't seem to be... which helps folks lose patience, and makes folks get chippy on forums. 0-6 in the AFC East is probably an even-money bet (maybe we'll get the Fish once?), and then add in the rest of the schedule, and it is even more bleak.

I think we Bills fans are justified in venting spleens at Russ Brandon and Ralph Wilson. Rooting your guts out for a team is an emotional thing... when winning or losing.
