  1. I say hire Buddy Ryan as President of Operations of the Bills and see if he knows a decent coach who could come over and turn us around......and fast.

You know, we've had first class FO guys, then lots of incompetence... maybe we should try out some crazy. We haven't tried crazy yet, have we?

I wonder if Jerry Glanville is available.

  2. My apologies that WGR has to play his show for hours in the afternoon, thinking that it will fill the need for sports talk. I tune in once every few weeks (or less) just to hear what might be talked about. More often than not, I'm left still wondering what is going on in the world of sports. He spends more time repeating his silly one liners than talking about any real information ... usually with a recorded sound bit of something that is more than often taken out of context just to make himself even 'funnier'. I've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt ... especially since so many think that he does a great interview. I've never heard what other seem to hear. All that he ever does is get guests to answer meaningless questions which usually tend to buoy his own self-absorbed arrogrance.

I've never supported advertizers on his show ... or those from WGR during his show ... and my radio doesn't have a special transceiver that sends info to ESPN to let them know that I'm listening. He doesn't get ratings from me. He gets ratings from people who want their 30 seconds of fame b/c Jim Rome read their e-mail or talked to them on the show. It's the radio equivalent of America's Got Talent ... without anyone with enough talent to win (in other words, just the freak shows that want to be on TV).

Well if you like long, awkward pauses, or dull/repetitive attempts at humor, or crappy music, he's great.

Of course, the Bills deserve the verbal beatdowns they are getting from all sides.

  3. Totally agree that teams WAY OVERVALUE draft picks. If you look historically, most 1st rounders are mediocre or busts. The way to build a team is to do 3 things:

    a) trade down to stockpile picks

    b) trade your picks for established veterans (w/out having to pay signing bonuses)

    c) use the cash saved from the high 1st rounders to sign FA's

Like the evil empire in Foxboro, for example.

Buddy had a trade all mapped out in his head, but then he got to the fax machine to send in the paperwork and got a blank stare on his face. After a minute and a half of this nonsense, he forgot what the trade was. Then he went back to his office and had a ham samitch.

Maybe Russ Brandon can work this confounded faxtrola...

  4. I just lost my Mom after along illnes and my frustration over the Bills is higher than ever. We always talked about the day we'd see them win a Superbowl together and she will never realize it. I'm 49 and I'm beginning to think I'll never see success again. It's particularily heavy because of Mom.

She was a great fan. She took me to games at the Rockpile when I was a kid, and the first game at Rich. She was with me through a lot of Bills wins and losses. We suffered through the mid eightie and she would always support the team. Even one year when I scraped a Bills bumper sticker off my car in the middle of the winter because I was so mad, she laughed and continued to wear her Bills gear. These days, this team embarasses me and I feel foolish supporting them, but my Mom was always royal. Back before the wife and kids, I had a super bowl party. She witnessed "Wide right" with me and a bunch of my friends. I saw tears on her cheeks, but she was sure we'd get one next year. She remained loyal. Every sunday after the game we'd compare notes. She died the day after the Miami game. How sad.

She loved her Bills. It would be disrespectful to her memory to give up now, even though I am frustrated at the Bills ineptitude and I will never forgive Ralph for letting a great fan like my mother go to her grave not knowing where the Bills will be in the future. It bothered he a lot and he owed her that. My kids may pick other teams and I won't blame them, but I'll always be there on sunday.

Mom....I'll always love you, and I'm not quitting. I'm not buying tickets or gear, because you didn't raise a fool, but I'm not quitting.

    Steve

PS....I'm sure there are great fans who are at the eternal tailgate right now. Tell us about them.

May your mom RIP. On the plus side, she now knows the exact date when the Bills finally win it all. :)

You should send this to the FO, and to Gailey.

  5. I live in DC, so I'd inevitably end up following the Skins. I'd never love them like I love the Bills -- it's impossible that any other team could ever make me feel the joy or pain that the Bills bring. But I love football, and I'm gonna watch football no matter what, and DC has been home for 10 years now, so I'd probably become a Skins fan. Not a fanatic, but a fan. The fact that the Skins are completely dysfunctional, have sucked for the past decade, and have a horrible owner would make the transition easy.

The Bills make the Skins look like they're run by the Rooney family.

  6. Seriously, it is such a waste. We have two work horse RB's in lynch and Jackson that can carry the load all by themselves, now getting in some cases less than 5 carries. 2 backs total, one to complement Spiller and run with it. Jackson is obviously the more balanced back since he can do everything Lynch can plus run the wildcat, but do we utilize this, no! I'd like to see Lynch traded, but some move has to be made here with this position to build for the future.

WE DON'T NEED 3 STARTING RB'S WITH THE CURRENT STATE OF THIS TEAM!

Definitely. No one can get enough carries to get going anyway.

  7. Actually this is much more scientific than old wives tales like "Kick early, go for it late."

Football outsiders did a study on going for it on 4th and 1 and teams make it 70% of the time early and make it less late, but even the lower percentage late it ended up being more than 50%.

So basically as long as you're not inside your own 45 you should go for it on 4th and 1 all the time.

They looked at 4th and 2, and basically the successful conversions took a hugely dramatic drop.

I can't quickly find the article quickly but it was pretty interesting.

The article specifically calls out Bill Titticheck and how is predilection for going for it on 4th actually makes sense.

At the time, I was OK with taking the points, but in the back of my head I thought, this is the difference between the Bills and the Gatriots.

Titticheck would have gone for it there and came away with 7, and we were happy to kick for 3.

Very interesting -- thanks! I hadn't seen that before. Also worth factoring in is the talent matchup, of course. The Hatriots have an O-line, which opens up the options significantly.
