Averaged something like 3.5 catches for 50 or so yards a game in college.
He does a bit better than that these days.

Why did a meh college program in turmoil not use their converted walk-on QB turned receiving TE enough?
Good lesson on why matching college production to pro potential isn't always as easy as checking the box score. Some programs/systems just don't highlight certain positions or skill sets very well. See Michael Thomas in Urban Meyer's system as an extreme example. -

Wonder why the Patriots selected a third round running back after drafting one in the first round last year and having another weapon at RB in James White? Granted, that's a pretty terrible franchise with an awful track record, but...
I know you're firm in your beliefs, but perhaps you should reconsider.

I know a lot of the WR aficionados have coalesced behind Hakeem Butler has the other prospects have been selected, but I think most of the reason why this pass catcher hasn't been selected comes from the following note in his scouting report:
- Drops on drops on drops

I'd be fine with taking a flier on Butler at this point due to the opportunity cost. We don't really need to make 4 more picks as we're going to run into serious roster contention and end up needing to cut some talented players.
That said, everyone has fallen in love with Butler as their other crushes have been dispatched, and it's coalescing into this one guy. He could be ok, but I mean, let's not get ourselves into a tizzy for a receiver with this in his scouting report:

The likelihood that we're passing time and time again on the next superstar WR is vanishingly small.

They aren't going to move Shady. He's an important piece of this team and they certainly don't need the immediate cash savings against the cap.
Shady/Gore split the primary reps 60-40, with Yeldon handling a good part of the passing situation work.
Mix in the rookie for a series here and there to get his feet wet while he learns to be a pro from a couple of the best to ever play.
Sounds...terrible? I dunno, not seeing the problem.

Will say again:
TE with 0 TDs = reaching on a combine all star.
RB with 66 TDs in 3 years = reaching on a stats guy who lacks the measurables.
The cognitive dissonance on display is peak Bills fan.

What if I told you that the team didn't feel that there would be a receiver available at pick 8 in the 4th round that was a more "legit receiving threat" than our current #4 receiver Zay Jones? That doesn't seem impossible for me to believe, being as that is the minimum bar to get on the field for this team.

McCoy has shown that he is no longer capable of being a feature back. Gore obviously is not either.
You're looking at about 12 carries per game for McCoy (when healthy)
8-10 for Gore (when healthy)
A handful for the rookie, who has two Hall of Fame mentors to ramp up to hopefully become the lead back next year
Yeldon gets third down/passing work
Sounds like a pretty solid approach to handing the running back position, with an eye to the future.

Wonder why other respectable franchises were drafting RBs with similar projections in the same area of the draft. I guess they didn't figure out that you can get them anywhere any time. Or...?

Ty - I did misread that. You're saying that they should have drafted Knox at the top of the third, and then hoped Singletary was still on the board a full round later at the top of the 4th. I stand by my suggestion that you are wishcasting that Singletary would have been on the board some 40 picks later, but whatever. I suspect you'd have been unhappy either way.

Since nobody (including me, tbh) has any idea who the heck this level of prospects are and have never watched a single snap they have played:

Knox lacks early speed and short-area quickness which could limit his ability to uncover underneath but he's much more dangerous when allowed to roam the middle of the field as a more linear route-worker. His pass-catching production may never matchup with the testing numbers, but his aggressiveness and talent as a run-blocker could provide him work as a combo tight end for years to come.Strengths- Carries NFL-caliber frame along with him
- Workout freak-daddy with good explosion and speed numbers
- Flexible hips to sink and expedite his whip routes
- Tracks and adjusts to the throw
- Build-up speed is impressive
- Catches it away from his frame in space
- Competitive runner after catch
- Can make a tackler miss or hit them with some power
- Accurate, heavy hands at point of attack
- Strikes with leverage and churns feet looking to bury his man
- Punches with good extension in pass pro
- Gives good effort to stay in front of rusher.
Weaknesses- Workout testing doesn't manifest itself on tape often enough
- Pace can be a little sluggish underneath
- Route turns and breaks lack desired burst
- Never scored a touchdown in college
- Will get out-breaking routes jumped
- Has dealt with nagging injuries since high school
- Bad blocking reps usually involve lunging
- Needs to keep head back and see what he's striking

Most fans are more into fantasy football these days so the “elderly” RBs and deep group of non-star receivers just _feel_ bad when they’d really like to draft more Bills players. It’s understandable, really.
